Evaluation Of Frictional Forces Between Brackets Of Different Types At Various Angulations And An Arch Wire: With And Without Pulsating Vibration, Benjamin M. Christman
Evaluation Of Frictional Forces Between Brackets Of Different Types At Various Angulations And An Arch Wire: With And Without Pulsating Vibration, Benjamin M. Christman
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of pulsating vibration on the sliding resistance between orthodontic brackets and stainless steel wires. Brackets were placed at two different angulations (0° and 5°) to simulate leveling of a tipped tooth during tooth movement. Pulsating vibration was delivered via the AcceleDent device.
Background: Friction is defined as a force that retards or resists the relative motion of two objects in contact, and its direction is tangential to the common boundary of the two surfaces in contact. This has been of interest to the orthodontist since the mid-20th century. Since …
Humeral Retrotorsion In Developing Children And Its Relationship To Throwing Sports, Elliot M. Greenberg
Humeral Retrotorsion In Developing Children And Its Relationship To Throwing Sports, Elliot M. Greenberg
Department of Physical Therapy Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: Baseball players exhibit a more posteriorly oriented humeral head or humeral retrotorsion (HRT) in the dominant arm, likely representing an adaptive response to the stress of throwing. This adaptation is thought to occur while skeletally immature, however there is limited research detailing how throwing while young influences the development HRT. In addition, it is currently unclear how this changing osseous orientation influences shoulder motion within young athletes. Purpose: To determine the influence of throwing and age on the development of asymmetry in HRT and shoulder range of motion (ROM); and analyze the relationship between HRT and ROM. Study Design: …

Cason Monk Funeral Records Database, Kelley Snowden, Katie Swann
Cason Monk Funeral Records Database, Kelley Snowden, Katie Swann
Nacogdoches and Community
The Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home was established in 1893 in Nacogdoches, Texas by the Cason and Monk families. The funeral home was incorporated in 1906 as Cason Monk & Co. It acquired the Branch Patton Funeral Home in 1946, and later in 1986 merged with the Oakley Metcalf Funeral Home. Currently known as Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, it is now operated by Dignity Memorial.
The funeral home’s records from 1900 through 1957 are available as a digital collection through the East Texas Research Center. It was the purpose of this project to compile information from these records into a database …

This newsletter began with the Fall 2015 Honors English class. These students were challenged to initiate research over a topic they thought was interesting and show how it related to our campus, Stephen F. Austin State University. It is our hope that this cumulative research will help readers look at SFA a little differently.
A New Method For Shear Wave Speed Estimation In Shear Wave Elastography, Aaron J. Engel, Gregory R. Bashford
A New Method For Shear Wave Speed Estimation In Shear Wave Elastography, Aaron J. Engel, Gregory R. Bashford
Biomedical Imaging and Biosignal Analysis Laboratory
Visualization of mechanical properties of tissue can aid in noninvasive pathology diagnosis. Shear wave elastography (SWE) measures the elastic properties of soft tissues by estimation of local shear wave propagation speed. In this paper, a new robust method for estimation of shear wave speed is introduced which has the potential for simplifying continuous filtering and real-time elasticity processing. Shear waves were generated by external mechanical excitation and imaged at a high frame rate. Three homogeneous phantoms of varying elastic moduli and one inclusion phantom were imaged. Waves propagating in separate directions were filtered and shear wave speed was estimated by …

Waste Disposal At Whiting Farm: Recommendations For Current Waste Removal And Future Recycling Systems, Ruthie Baker, Britta Clark, Annie Coleman, Nina Sevilla
Community Engaged Research Reports
The goal of this report is to provide Whiting Farm in Auburn, Maine with an analysis of options and resources that will help the farm to make informed decisions for the removal and disposal of both existing and future waste, with a specific focus on recycling. Whiting Farm has never had an on-site waste disposal system. As a result, they have accumulated large amounts of agricultural plastic, which is stored mostly outside in three forested areas around the farm. Dealing with this waste is key in implementing the farm’s goals of environmental and economic sustainability, as well as functioning as …

Whiting Farm Renewable Energy Report, Jacob Yudkin, Landon Smith, Emma Blakeley, Isobel Curtis
Community Engaged Research Reports
This report provides an analysis of the current electrical and heating usage at Whiting Farm. The data gathered from the analysis is used to evaluate the efficacy of alternative energy sources to offset or completely replace Whiting Farm’s dependence on grid-drawn electricity and propane. We found that solar power is the most cost-effective source of alternative electricity production so we recommend the installation of a 15 kilowatt (kW) array from ReVision Energy. A wind turbine produces far less electricity, but serves as a powerful educational tool, so we recommend a Pika T701 1.5 kW turbine from Pika Energy. Geothermal heating …

History Of Shared-Use Commercial Kitchens: A Case Study Analysis Of Kitchen Success, Emma Conover, Elyse Rubchinuk, Suzannah Smith, Yarisamar Cortez

A shared-use kitchen is a legally licensed commercial kitchen space that is certified for the production of value-added food products. These spaces are most often used by local culinary entrepreneurs. Shared-use kitchens can create positive economic, environmental, social, and health effects for communities.
The purpose of this project is to determine the key features of a successful shared-use commercial kitchen, especially in areas demographically similar to the Lewiston/Auburn community. Since shared-use kitchen success is highly dependent on demographic considerations (population, racial diversity, per capita income, education level, non-English languages spoken), examining these features can exhibit how kitchens can best cater …

The Androscoggin Valley Stormwater Group (AVSWG) has been tasked with the objective of inducing a reduction or elimination of fertilizers and/or pesticides for 15% of college educated residents between the ages of 35-55 in the cities of Lewiston and Auburn by June, 2018. This demographic was chosen as the target of the outreach program because of their financial stability and their relative willingness to change behavior when compared to other age groups.
We produced a survey that targets this same demographic and is meant to evaluate the effectiveness of the AVSWG education outreach program. This deliverable fits into Permit Year …
