Canonoid And Poissonoid Transformations, Symmetries And Bihamiltonian Structures, Giovanni Rastelli, Manuele Santoprete Dec 2015

Canonoid And Poissonoid Transformations, Symmetries And Bihamiltonian Structures, Giovanni Rastelli, Manuele Santoprete

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We give a characterization of linear canonoid transformations on symplectic manifolds and we use it to generate biHamiltonian structures for some mechanical systems. Utilizing this characterization we also study the behavior of the harmonic oscillator under canonoid transformations. We present a description of canonoid transformations due to E.T. Whittaker, and we show that it leads, in a natural way, to the modern, coordinate-independent definition of canonoid transformations. We also generalize canonoid transformations to Poisson manifolds by introducing Poissonoid transformations. We give examples of such transformations for Euler’s equations of the rigid body (on so*(3) and so*(4)) and for an integrable …

A Delphi Study Of An Effective State Assessment Method For Continuation High Schools, Edison L. Kelly Dec 2015

A Delphi Study Of An Effective State Assessment Method For Continuation High Schools, Edison L. Kelly

Dissertations

Since the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, there has been an urgency in the overall academic accountability for all students nationwide. Since then the state leadership and experts in the state of California have made it a priority to educate and hold schools and students accountable through standards based instruction and assessments. To date this has not been the case for continuation high schools in the state of California.

The purpose of this mixed methods Delphi study was to identify appropriate assessment methods for California continuation high schools, to rate the respective effectiveness of the identified methods, and …

Building Career And Technical Education Capacity In California's Secondary Schools, Carol Tsushima

Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the barriers to building secondary career technical education (CTE) capacity and the best means of overcoming those barriers from the perspective of the California regional occupational centers and programs (ROCPs). Methodology: Using a Delphi method, a panel of 15 CTE experts provided input through 4 rounds of anonymous electronic surveys. Conclusions: Utilizing the resources within the state’s ROCP system helped to identify barriers not addressed in the current literature or research. The impact of funding fluctuations, the limitations of the traditional school schedule, and the need to be …

When Winning Means Losing: Why A State Takeover Of Public Lands May Leave States Without The Minerals They Covet, Robert B. Keiter, John C. Ruple Dec 2015

When Winning Means Losing: Why A State Takeover Of Public Lands May Leave States Without The Minerals They Covet, Robert B. Keiter, John C. Ruple

Wallace Stegner Center for Land, Resources, and the Environment publications

This White Paper, the third in a series assessing state efforts to take over federal public lands, addresses state claims to the minerals underlying those lands. Using Utah as an example, we argue here that even if states overcome extremely long odds to convince a court that the federal government is obligated to dispose of more public land, and that such a disposal obligation necessitates giving the public domain to the states, well established legal principles would prevent grants of most mineral lands to the states. Moreover, any mineral rights that states did obtain would be realized only after years …

Density-Based Clustering Of High-Dimensional Dna Fingerprints For Library-Dependent Microbial Source Tracking, Eric Johnson Dec 2015

Density-Based Clustering Of High-Dimensional Dna Fingerprints For Library-Dependent Microbial Source Tracking, Eric Johnson

Master's Theses

As part of an ongoing multidisciplinary effort at California Polytechnic State University, biologists and computer scientists have developed a new Library-Dependent Microbial Source Tracking method for identifying the host animals causing fecal contamination in local water sources. The Cal Poly Library of Pyroprints (CPLOP) is a database which stores E. coli representations of fecal samples from known hosts acquired from a novel method developed by the biologists called Pyroprinting. The research group considers E. coli samples whose Pyroprints match above a certain threshold to be part of the same bacterial strain. If an environmental sample from an unknown host animal …

Analyzing Student Perceptions Of Starting A New Football Program At A University, Zachary Ringlein

Graduate Theses

Background: Student support is a critical factor that colleges and universities must consider when determining whether to add a football team to the athletic program.
