Tegg, Katherine A. Marsden, Velandai Srikanth, John Blangero, Ray M. Lowenthal, Simon J. Foote, Joanne L. Dickinson

School of Medicine Publications

Telomere length has a biological link to cancer, with excessive telomere shortening leading to genetic instability and resultant malignant transformation. Telomere length is heritable and genetic variants determining telomere length have been identified. Telomere biology has been implicated in the development of hematological malignancies (HMs), therefore, closer examination of telomere length in HMs may provide further insight into genetic etiology of disease development and support for telomere length as a prognostic factor in HMs. We retrospectively examined mean relative telomere length in the Tasmanian Familial Hematological Malignancies Study using a quantitative PCR method on genomic DNA from peripheral blood samples. …

Transarterial Embolization Of Renal Tumors Improves Surgical Outcomes: A Case Series, Henry Reinhart, Melhem Ghaleb, Brian R. Davis Jan 2015

Transarterial Embolization Of Renal Tumors Improves Surgical Outcomes: A Case Series, Henry Reinhart, Melhem Ghaleb, Brian R. Davis

School of Medicine Publications

Introduction

Operative treatment of renal tumors can be associated with a high rate of perioperative morbidity related to hemorrhage and injury to adjacent anatomical structures. This morbidity of solid organ surgery is especially prevalent when the lesion involves chronic inflammation or a desmoplastic reaction from a rapidly growing tumor. No consensus on the use of transarterial embolization has been fashioned as the number of prospective studies is small. This study proposes to examine the beneficial effects of selective transarterial embolization of the kidney prior to surgical resection.

Presentation of case

A retrospective case matched review was performed of consecutive nephroureterectomies …

First Year Sprouting And Growth Dynamics Of Northern Red Oak, Yellow-Poplar, Red Maple, And Sweet Birch On A Mesic Site Following A Release Burn During A "Shelterwood-Burn" Sequence, Maria Adele Fenwick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Oak regeneration challenges are a widespread issue across the mixed oak and mixed mesophytic forests of the eastern United States. Following disturbance on many mesic and sub-mesic sites oaks are being replaced by faster growing or shade tolerant species. There are many contributing factors, but one thought to have the strongest influence is attributed to the effects of 20th century fire suppression. For millennia fire was an integral part of oak dominated ecosystems and is thought to have contributed to and perpetuated oak's importance in these forests. During the 20th century the frequency and spatial scale of fire was severely …

Sports Investment, Beliefs About Food-Related Behaviors, And Engagement In Problematic Eating Behaviors During Adolescence, Kaitlyn A. Ferris Jan 2015

Sports Investment, Beliefs About Food-Related Behaviors, And Engagement In Problematic Eating Behaviors During Adolescence, Kaitlyn A. Ferris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Involvement in sport is the most widely reported organized activity among children and adolescents. To date, organized sports also represent the only organized activity examined in conjunction with youths' eating behaviors. Organized sports serve as contexts where messages about healthy eating and body image are communicated, and adolescents' beliefs about food and their bodies' degree of thinness and muscularity has the potential to be amplified in such settings as youth strive to perform at high levels during athletic competitions. However, inconsistency in the measurement of both organized sports participation and adolescents' engagement in problematic under- and over-eating behaviors has resulted …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The application of bioremediation as a means to ameliorate potentially toxic metals from contaminated soils has been on the forefront of sustainable technologies in the field of environmental studies. Conventional methods available for soil remediation are employed in both in situ or ex situ and these are: soil flushing, solidification/stabilization, vitrification, electrokinetics, chemical reduction/oxidation, soil washing, and excavation. In general, these technologies are limited by their applicability to small areas and the high costs to execute. The use of biota, in particular fungi and trees, has been an emerging low-cost and "environmentally-friendly" alternative to conventional technologies. In this study, I …

A Bayesian Approach To Reduced Order Modeling In Catalytic Steam Reforming, Evan D. Ford Jan 2015

A Bayesian Approach To Reduced Order Modeling In Catalytic Steam Reforming, Evan D. Ford

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of developing a reduced order model capable of accurately predicting the behavior of steam methane reforming. An emerging model reduction technique based on examining causal relationships was applied to the reaction network developed by Xu and Froment to eliminate unnecessary intermediate species[1]. A dynamic discrepancy term was included in the reduced network to quantify the error incurred from the network reduction. This discrepancy is stochastic in nature, and a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling routine coupled with Bayesian statistical methods was used to calibrate the parameters of the discrepancy by comparison …

Furthermore, in order to better assess the predictability of these factors, this study considers other control variables while assessing predictability of personality traits, such as Facebook usage, length of the relationship, and time since the break- up, drawing from both social psychology and SNS …

A Consensus Based Decentralized State Estimation For Power Distribution Networks, Varun Garaga Jan 2015

A Consensus Based Decentralized State Estimation For Power Distribution Networks, Varun Garaga

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis presents a new Decentralized State Estimation algorithm using agents directed mainly to distribution power systems. This new algorithm solves problems that occur when one tries to estimate the state of the distribution power systems. By various reasons such as high levels of quality of service, automation capabilities and comparatively less size, those problems do not occur so frequently on the transmission systems. A consensus based static state estimation strategy for radial power distribution systems is proposed in this research. This thesis concentrates on the balanced systems.;There are buses acting as agents using which we can evaluate the local …

Three Essays On Remittances, Institutions, And Economic Development, Durga Gautam Jan 2015

Three Essays On Remittances, Institutions, And Economic Development, Durga Gautam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Does the inflow of remittances affect the quality of institutions in the recipient countries? This question is important because economists have stressed that good economic institutions, particularly those in the public sector, are instrumental for economic development and growth. The literature on remittances, however, does not document a thorough analysis and compelling evidence of the relationship between these private financial transfers and institutional quality. Unlike other kinds of international capital flows, remittances inflows are not mediated by the government of recipient countries. Remittances are not taxed directly and so are not a source of revenue for the government. Then a …

The Effects Of Modest Improvement In Pellet Quality On Tom Turkey And Straight-Run Broiler Performance, With Focus On Experimental Design, Brian Gregory Glover

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Improving the crumble/pellet percentage of feed has been argued to be difficult to obtain in the commercial industry due to the necessity of feed mills producing adequate feed volume within a time constraint. Poultry research often utilizes small numbers of birds per pen or experimental unit that may affect the estimation of variance components, potentially producing pen performance metrics that are less valuable for industry guidance. In Experiment 1, diets were manufactured to maintain nutrient availability and vary only in crumble/pellet percentage (standard = 40% pellets, improved = 70% pellets). The two dietary treatments were then fed to Hybrid Converter …

The Nature Of Magnetic Reconnection At The Dayside Magnetopause, Colin Michael Komar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Magnetic reconnection is a phenomenon that occurs in hot ionized gases, or plasmas, whereby oppositely directed magnetic field components break and cross-connect, converting energy stored in the magnetic fields to plasma motion and heat. Reconnection occurs between Earth's magnetic field and interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF) carried by the solar wind, plasma emanating from the sun. Reconnection occurs at the sunward boundary of Earth's magnetosphere, the region of space that is dominated by Earth's magnetic field. However, predicting the properties of reconnection at this boundary, including basic considerations such as where reconnection occurs and how efficiently, remain an unsolved problem.;In this …
