The Nature Of Magnetic Reconnection At The Dayside Magnetopause, Colin Michael Komar
The Nature Of Magnetic Reconnection At The Dayside Magnetopause, Colin Michael Komar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Magnetic reconnection is a phenomenon that occurs in hot ionized gases, or plasmas, whereby oppositely directed magnetic field components break and cross-connect, converting energy stored in the magnetic fields to plasma motion and heat. Reconnection occurs between Earth's magnetic field and interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF) carried by the solar wind, plasma emanating from the sun. Reconnection occurs at the sunward boundary of Earth's magnetosphere, the region of space that is dominated by Earth's magnetic field. However, predicting the properties of reconnection at this boundary, including basic considerations such as where reconnection occurs and how efficiently, remain an unsolved problem.;In this …
Persuasion, Police, And Public Safety: Message Framing, Compliance, And Perceptions Of Law Enforcement, Alexander L. Lancaster
Persuasion, Police, And Public Safety: Message Framing, Compliance, And Perceptions Of Law Enforcement, Alexander L. Lancaster
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the everyday interactions between law enforcement and the citizens of their communities, officers attempt to gain compliance verbally, before resorting to physical force, if necessary. This dissertation examined the use of persuasive verbal messages by law enforcement officers when encountering citizens. These messages were created to represent a progression of asking, telling, and making, to gain compliance from an individual.;The officers in this study were university police officers, because university police departments are charged with providing a safe learning environment on campus. Due to the visible, community oriented policing in which university police departments tend to engage, it is …

Assessing Feeder Space Access And Commercial Phytase Production Methods On Performance Of Commercial Broilers Fed Pelleted Diets, Mark Edward Lemons
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Applied research conducted at universities is essential for further advancements in poultry science and ultimately the commercial poultry industry. One important area of applied nutrition research is examining production methods associated with the important feed additive/enzyme phytase. Exogenous phytase inclusion in poultry diets has consistently been associated with decreased diet cost, increased broiler performance, and reduction in negative environmental impact. However, thermal stability of commercial phytases are variable. Strategies for production of phytases that ultimately maintain activity after being subjected to the pelleting process is essential. Phytase manufacturers have modified production methods in an effort to maximize phytase thermal stability …

Development Of Drilling Control Technology To Reduce Drilling Noise During Roof Bolting Operations, Mingming Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Noise induced hearing loss is a serious health issue among coal mine workers. The roof bolting operation is one of the noisiest underground mining operations. It is second among all equipment in underground coal mines whose operators exceed 100% noise dosage according to MSHA data. In roof bolting, the noise generated in the roof drilling normally contributes a major proportion to the noise exposure to this particular group of miners. This study is to develop a drilling control technology to reduce noise generated during roof bolting drilling.;Previous research shows that the specific energy consumed in drilling bolt holes is inversely …

Electrode Reaction Pathway In Oxide Anode For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Wenyuan Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Oxide anodes for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) with the advantage of fuel flexibility, resistance to coarsening, small chemical expansion and etc. have been attracting increasing interest. Good performance has been reported with a few of perovskite structure anodes, such as (LaSr)(CrMn)O3. However, more improvements need to be made before meeting the application requirement. Understanding the oxidation mechanism is crucial for a directed optimization, but it is still on the early stage of investigation. In this study, reaction mechanism of oxide anodes is investigated on doped YCrO 3 with H2 fuel, in terms of the origin of electrochemical activity, rate-determining …

Ethnic Diplomacy: Race, The United States, And Mexico During World War Ii, Jordan Lieser
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation begins by framing the overall relationship between the United States and Mexico during World War II and recognizes the significant economic role Mexico played in the U.S. wartime industrialization. With this framework in place, the emphasis of this research then turns to how Mexico pressured the United States government into addressing the racial prejudice which existed within the United States against what was perceived as a unified Latin American ethnic group. Thanks to the increased importance of Mexico, multiple parts of the United States government including the State Department, the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, the …

Prediction Of Discretization Error Using The Error Transport Equation, Don Roscoe Parsons Iii
Prediction Of Discretization Error Using The Error Transport Equation, Don Roscoe Parsons Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since its conception, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has had a role to play in both the industrial and the academic realm. Due to the availability of relatively cheap computer resources, CFD is now playing an increasingly critical role in the industry compared to experiments. It is also becoming increasingly important for the CFD analyst to have an in-depth understanding of the error inherently present in numeric and mathematical models. At a minimum, CFD simulation results should be accompanied by some analysis of the error including some type of grid convergence study and an estimation of the corresponding numerical uncertainty.;Error estimation …

Static Code Analysis: On Detection Of Security Vulnerabilities And Classification Of Warning Messages, Andrei M. Perhinschi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis addresses several aspects of using static code analysis tools for detection of security vulnerabilities and faults within source code. First, the performance of three widely used static code analysis tools with respect to detection of security vulnerabilities is evaluated. This is done with the help of a large benchmarking suite designed to test static code analysis tools' performance regarding security vulnerabilities. The performance of the three tools is also evaluated using three open source software projects with known security vulnerabilities. The main results of the first part of this thesis showed that the three evaluated tools do not …
The Role Of Arginase I In Ischemic Stroke And Cardiovascular Disease, Ashley Brooke Petrone
The Role Of Arginase I In Ischemic Stroke And Cardiovascular Disease, Ashley Brooke Petrone
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is currently the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. Further, the incidence of AIS is expected to increase dramatically through year 2030. Despite the current and anticipated burden of AIS, treatment options for AIS, both acute and chronic, are extremely limited. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is currently the only FDA-approved drug used to treat AIS; however, only a small fraction of AIS patients are eligible to receive tPA, and of these, only roughly 15 percent benefit from treatment with tPA. Given this, there is a crucial …
Is A Follow Up Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiography Procedure Necessary For Removal Of Biliary Stent?, Shashank Ponugoti
Is A Follow Up Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiography Procedure Necessary For Removal Of Biliary Stent?, Shashank Ponugoti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Follow up endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedure is routinely performed to remove biliary stents. Simply removing the stents is feasible with upper endoscopy (EGD), which costs less, is technically less challenging, is likely to be more comfortable for the patient, and is safer from a sedation perspective. But therapeutic interventions requiring ERCP may preclude this option. The aim of this study was to analyze the utility of follow up ERCP for biliary stent removal and to determine if follow up ERCP procedure is necessary in all patients. The study population comprised 284 adults who had undergone ERCP for stent placement …
Digital Eye Modification A Countermeasure To Automated Face Recognition, Domenick Poster Iii
Digital Eye Modification A Countermeasure To Automated Face Recognition, Domenick Poster Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis describes and assesses a series of subtle digital eye modification techniques and their impact on automated face detection and recognition. The techniques involve altering the relative positioning of a person's eyes in a photograph using a variety of horizontal and vertical movements local to the eye regions. Testing with Eigenfaces, Fisherfaces, and Circular Local Binary Pattern face recognition algorithms on a database of 40 subjects and over 4000 modified images shows these subtle geometric changes to the eyes can degrade automated face recognition accuracy by 40% or more. Certain modifications even lower the chance a face is detected …
An Examination Of Households' Willingness-To-Pay For Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation In The United States: A Benefit Transfer Approach, Rajendra Prasad Poudel
An Examination Of Households' Willingness-To-Pay For Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation In The United States: A Benefit Transfer Approach, Rajendra Prasad Poudel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research paper provides a benefit transfer model of willingness-to-pay (WTP) for wetlands' biodiversity conservation in the United States. The validity of the estimated wetland's willingness-to-pay values is also examined. While valuation of the services provided by wetlands may be challenging due to their non-market nature, estimation of values is important. Conducting a primary study is the best option for precise results. However, researchers may recommend the benefit transfer approach in wetland valuation when there are limited time, budgetary constraints, and administrative urgency.;The benefit transfer approach involves transferring of value estimates from study sites (where research was already undertaken) to …
The Effects Of Parameter Tuning On Machine Learning Performance In A Software Defect Prediction Context, Benjamin N. Province
The Effects Of Parameter Tuning On Machine Learning Performance In A Software Defect Prediction Context, Benjamin N. Province
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most machine learning techniques rely on a set of user-defined parameters. Changes in the values of these parameters can greatly affect the prediction performance of the learner. These parameters are typically either set to default values or tuned for best performance on a particular type of data. In this thesis, the parameter-space of four machine learners is explored in order to determine the efficacy of parameter tuning within the context of software defect prediction.;A distinction is made between the typical within-version learning scheme and forward learning, in which learners are trained on defect data from one software version and used …
Reciprocity With The Researcher: An Experimental Manipulation To Increase Help-Seeking In Adults 60 And Older, Elizabeth C. Price
Reciprocity With The Researcher: An Experimental Manipulation To Increase Help-Seeking In Adults 60 And Older, Elizabeth C. Price
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Seeking help is one way that individuals can maintain and achieve goals, but older adults may be reluctant to ask for help if they feel they cannot give anything in return. Men or individuals who endorse traditional beliefs about masculine behavior may be less likely than other individuals to ask for help. The first aim of the present study was to determine if a brief experimental manipulation based on the norm of reciprocity could increase help-seeking behavior and improve attitudes toward seeking help in older men and women. A second aim was to examine the relation between traditional beliefs about …
Victorians Thinking Globally: Identity And Empire In Middle-Class Reading, Jessica A. Queener
Victorians Thinking Globally: Identity And Empire In Middle-Class Reading, Jessica A. Queener
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation argues that popular literature defined how English readers should reconcile a class-based experience of empire with the broadest categories of national identity meant to unify the subjects of the British Empire. Serial genres---periodicals and novels published in numbers---examined new patterns of travel, new approaches to social problems, and the new opportunities empire created for members of the middle class. Spanning the period from roughly 1840 to 1870, each chapter examines a narrative trope used to engage Victorian readers with the concerns of empire, and thus give them an opportunity to imagine the greater world they were given access …

A Simulation Model For The Procedure Of Psychiatric Patients' Diversion At William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital Using Flocking Algorithm For Input Modeling, Aida Rabiee Gohar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The high rate of civil commitment in West Virginia indicates that the bureau of mental health in the state has been inefficient and unproductive at facilitating the procedures of mental health system delivery, to the point that the two state hospitals of West Virginia are often at their full capacity and incapable of admitting any new cases. This inadequacy at managing psychiatric emergencies causes frequent diversion of civil committed patients from the state psychiatric hospitals to other community psychiatric units, and ultimately costs the state an un-budgeted {dollar}4 million annually.;The main objective of this research is to contribute to the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Luminous compact blue galaxies (LCBGs) are bright (MB ≤ --18.5), blue (B -- V ≤ 0.6), massive (M* ∼ 10 9 M[special character omitted]) star-forming galaxies with high B-band surface brightnesses (SBe(B) ≤ 21.0) that were common at z ∼ 1 when the Universe was half of its current age, but are rare in the local Universe. In this thesis, I have conducted studies of the atomic neutral hydrogen (H I) and global star formation properties of a group of the rare z ∼ 0 analogs to the common z ∼ 1 LCBGs to better understand how this class of …
Promoting Parents' And Children's Well-Being Through Parent-Child Gratitude Interventions, Meagan A. Ramsey
Promoting Parents' And Children's Well-Being Through Parent-Child Gratitude Interventions, Meagan A. Ramsey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Gratitude is a positive emotion that leads to enhanced relationship resources and emotional well-being for children and adults alike. Given the many benefits of gratitude, researchers have examined several types of gratitude interventions. However, it is unclear how the effectiveness of different gratitude interventions compare for youth or how these interventions operate in the family setting. Therefore, this study examined how parents could cultivate their children's (ages 8-13) gratitude and how two gratitude interventions---counting blessings and relational gratitude---enhanced parents' and children's daily gratitude, relationship satisfaction, and emotional well-being over the course of a week-long intervention and if effects were maintained …
How To Mitigate Coal Mine Bumps Through Understanding The Violent Failure Of Coal Specimens, Gamal Rashed
How To Mitigate Coal Mine Bumps Through Understanding The Violent Failure Of Coal Specimens, Gamal Rashed
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coal mine bumps have presented serious mining problems for many years. These sudden violent failures around underground mine openings have compromised safety, ventilation and access to mine workings. There is general agreement among researchers that both geologic and poor/inappropriate mining conditions that create high stresses in the pillar are the main causative factors for coal bumps.;The main objective of this research is to understand bump mechanisms in laboratory settings through examining the violent failure of coal specimens and to test three hypotheses to mitigate that violent failure. Also, man-made concrete specimens were prepared and tested to simulate failures in underground …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Diel (24 hour) cycles of dissolved inorganic carbon and dissolved metals have rarely been studied in concert in coal mine drainage systems containing high CO2. Diel samples were collected from two locations at a site with elevated CO2; the locations differed in their CO 2 concentrations and the amount of vegetation present. Field data and samples were collected from both locations during March, May, and July 2014. To determine if the parameters cycled in a diel fashion, the data were fit using a cosine model and the goodness of fit was determined using an f-test statistic. Overall, 15 of 20 …

In the mid-nineteenth century, one of the most popular American magazine illustrators was David Hunter Strother, a native of Martinsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia). Using the pseudonym "Porte Crayon," Strother published semi-fictional accounts of his travels which he often illustrated as well as authored. The West Virginia & Regional History Center offers a digital collection of 730 of the artist's sketches and paintings. Additionally, the Walters Art Museum presents eight of Strother's sketches online. To provide a method for studying Strother's artworks, a database was created to show connections between the artist's works based on date, location, and thematic content. …
Quantitative Assessment Of The Discrimination Potential Of Class And Randomly Acquired Characteristics For Crime Scene Quality Shoeprints, Nicole Richetelli
Quantitative Assessment Of The Discrimination Potential Of Class And Randomly Acquired Characteristics For Crime Scene Quality Shoeprints, Nicole Richetelli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Footwear evidence has tremendous forensic value; it can focus a criminal investigation, link suspects to scenes, help reconstruct a series of events, or otherwise provide information vital to the successful resolution of a case. When considering the specific utility of a linkage, the strength of the connection between the source footwear and an impression left at the scene of a crime varies with the known rarity of the shoeprint itself, which is a function of the class characteristics, as well as the complexity, clarity, and quality of randomly acquired characteristics (RACs) available for analysis. To help elucidate the discrimination potential …
The Anti-Imperialist Empire: Soviet Nationality Policies Under Brezhnev, Jason A. Roberts
The Anti-Imperialist Empire: Soviet Nationality Policies Under Brezhnev, Jason A. Roberts
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation argues that the Soviet Union functioned as an empire despite its decidedly anti-imperialist rhetoric. Beginning in the 1920s, Bolshevik policies transformed the former Russian Empire into a new type of empire that was based on Marxist-Leninist ideology. Moreover, the Bolshevik policy of korenizatsiia as well as Marxist-Leninist rhetoric promoted the development of a decolonization process among the non-Russian peoples of the USSR in the 1920s and 1930s. Although Stalin abandoned korenizatsiia in the 1930s in favor of greater emphasis on Russification, the decolonization process continued into the Brezhnev period of the 1960s and 1970s. This decolonization process quickly …

This dissertation investigated factors that influence the decision-making process of police officers, prosecutors, public attorneys and judges when dealing with cases of domestic violence. The study specifically looked at the types of information the police and the judiciary considered relevant to ask victims when they filed complaints at police stations and at court hearings, respectively. Based on the literature on judicial politics and policing, this research focused on how individuals act as agents, helping or hindering the implementation of the policy. It highlighted the various factors that influence these agents, particularly in the context of small communities such as courts …
A Heterogeneous Aerial Platform Mission Planner Using A Genetic Algorithm, Jonathan Rojas
A Heterogeneous Aerial Platform Mission Planner Using A Genetic Algorithm, Jonathan Rojas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Systems exist today that can plan a mission with more than one aircraft efficiently for surveillance. However, objectives in these missions do not change and are typically performed using a homogeneous set of aerial vehicles. An adaptive mission planner was sought to task a heterogeneous set of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) when an unknown Target of Interest (TOI) is located amongst a set of Points of Interest (POIs). First, two dimensional flight path models of fixed wing and quadcopter platforms were created. Next, the design of a genetic algorithm and its fitness functions were studied. Fixed wing fitness functions were …
Against The Thalassocracy: Sacred Geography, Nationhood And Perennial Traditionalism In Alexander Dugin's Neo-Eurasianist Philosophy, Jonathan Rushbrook
Against The Thalassocracy: Sacred Geography, Nationhood And Perennial Traditionalism In Alexander Dugin's Neo-Eurasianist Philosophy, Jonathan Rushbrook
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis discusses the ideological makeup of the Russian right wing philosopher Alexander Dugin's and his conceptualization of race and nation in his Neo-Eurasianist imperial project. Tracing Dugin's ideological influences from early Eurasianism, the European New Right and esoteric religious beliefs such as Perennial Traditionalism, the thesis then goes on to place Dugin's body of thought within a larger debate on defining fascism and whether Dugin can be considered a fascist. Ultimately this thesis contests some scholars' interpretations of Dugin's worldview as a fundamentally ethnocentric or even racist Russian nationalism. Rather, by examining Dugin's writings on nation through an ethno-symbolist …
Drug Use And The Risk Of Motor Vehicle Collision In Adults 65 Years Of Age And Older, Toni Marie Rudisill
Drug Use And The Risk Of Motor Vehicle Collision In Adults 65 Years Of Age And Older, Toni Marie Rudisill
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: The population of adults 65 years of age and older is growing at an exponential rate in the United States. The current generation of older adults is more mobile and driving much later in life compared to previous cohorts. While the current generation of older adults is living longer, they are not necessarily healthier. Older adults consume roughly 30% of all written prescriptions, are the largest consumers of over-the-counter medications, and report a higher prevalence of lifetime licit and illicit drug use compared to previous generations. There is concern that many older adults will drive while taking drugs-either illicit …
An Ideal Role, Twenty Years Too Soon: A Young Actor's Journey Through The Role Of Leonard In "Seminar", Nicholas Ryan
An Ideal Role, Twenty Years Too Soon: A Young Actor's Journey Through The Role Of Leonard In "Seminar", Nicholas Ryan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Through our production of Seminar, unique challenges were uncovered for an actor performing the role of Leonard. My goal is to examine some of the most difficult and interesting challenges that arose from an unrealistic casting of a realistic play. Issues discussed will be the age gap between Leonard and the students, and what contextually needs to be researched from the script. This examination also addresses the balance of comedy versus drama in regards to Leonard's character relationships with the students, and Leonard's place as a stock character in contemporary theater.
