Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Hypercholesterolemia plays an important role in the development of atherosclerotic disease, which is one of the leading causes of mortality in the world. Previous studies showed that cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors could be used in treating hypercholesterolemia. The present study was designed to test whether COX-2 inhibition can improve lipid profiles in hypercholesterolemia. Materials and methods: Rabbits were fed a high-cholesterol diet to produce hypercholesterolemia. The role of COX-2 was evaluated using celecoxib and nimesulide. Rabbits were divided into 4 groups: the first with normal healthy rabbits, second with high-cholesterol diet and pretreatment with saline, third with high-cholesterol diet and pretreatment …

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

This paper presents a moving object tracker for monitoring system which can be used in a smart city. Kernel density estimation (KDE) algorithm has been used for representing a background model, while a minimum distance between the current image and the background has been used to extract the foreground. Also, morphological operations are carried out to remove the noise regions and to filter out ambiguous areas. The performance has been evaluated by determining the true, false, and miss detections of an object area. The optimal results have been obtained by adjusting the morphological operation sequence to be (close > thicken) combination …

Optimal Multi-Objective Robust Controller Design For Magnetic Levitation System, Hazem I., Mustafa I. Abd

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

In this work, the design of three types of robust controllers is presented to control the magnetic levitation system. These controllers are: basic H∞ controller, robust Genetic Algorithm (GA) based PID (GAPID) controller and robust Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based PID (PSOPID) controller. In the second and third controllers, the GA and PSO methods are used to tune the parameters of PID controller subject to multi-objective cost function (H∞ constraints and time domain specifications). The use of GA and PSO methods is used to simplify the design procedure and to overcome the difficulty of the resulting high order controller of …

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

Wireless sensor networks undergo tremendous applications to be utilized for. In this paper, we propose a wireless ad hoc sensor network architecture that does not depend on a centralized unit to urban city’s vehicular control, by applying different sensors distribution for main and side streets. On this architecture, we define and evaluate through simulation the effectiveness of our work against the traditional fixed-time traffic light model. Traffic lights coordination is addressed in master and local controllers by executing green-wave algorithm at our architecture. Simulation results show that this architecture achieves great reduction in total waiting time on the city been …

Hiv Prevalence In Blood Donors And Recipients In Pakistan: A Meta-Analysis And Analysis Of Blood-Bank Data, Bushra Moiz, Barkat Ali, Muhammad Hasnain Chatha, Ahmed Raheem, Hasan Abbas Zaheer

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background:
The first instances of HIV-antibody detection in donated blood in Pakistan were reported in 1988. Since then, documentation of HIV in blood donors and of rates of transmission via transfusion has been limited. Previously assumed to have a low prevalence, HIV is an increasing health concern in Pakistan. Since there is no national, centralized blood-banking system, there are no reliable data on which to base estimated risks of transfusion-associated HIV infection. This study was therefore conducted to estimate the prevalence of HIV in blood donors and recipients in Pakistan between 1988 and 2012.
Methods:
Meta-analyses were undertaken of reported …

Hospital Preparedness In Community Measles Outbreaks-Challenges And Recommendations For Low-Resource Settings, Sadia Shakoor, Fatima Mir, Anita Zaidi, Afia Zafar

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

We have reviewed various strategies involved in containment of measles in healthcare facilities during community outbreaks. The strategies that are more applicable to resource-poor settings, such as natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation with heating and air-conditioning systems allowing unidirectional air-flow, and protection of un-infected patients and healthcare workers (HCWs), have been examined. Ventilation methods need innovative customization for resource-poor settings followed by validation and post-implementation analysis for impact. Mandatory vaccination of all HCWs with two doses of measles-containing vaccine, appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis of immunocompromised inpatients, and stringent admission criteria for measles cases can contribute toward reduction of nosocomial and secondary transmission …

Moore's Paradox In Thought: A Critical Survey, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

It is raining but you don't believe that it is raining. Imagine silently accepting this claim. Then you believe both that it is raining and that you don't believe that it is raining. This would be an ‘absurd’ thing to believe, yet what you believe might be true. It might be raining, while at the same time, you are completely ignorant of the state of the weather. But how can it be absurd of you to believe something about yourself that might be true of you? This is Moore's paradox as it occurs in thought. Solving the paradox consists in …

Promoting Health With Sports: When Should Nonprofits Qualify For Tax Benefits?, William Drennan

SMU Law Review

Abstract for SMU Article - Promoting Health with Sports - April 1 2015 Current law routinely denies tax benefits to organizations promoting recreational adult sports even though medical research associates our inactivity with an epidemic of chronic diseases causing human suffering and spiraling healthcare costs. The IRS routinely grants tax-exempt status under IRC § 501(c)(3) to youth and college sports organizations based on century-old thinking that links sports with education. This obsession with evaluating sports as education developed in a bygone age when sports were merely for students and the idle rich, and most adults got plenty of physical activity …

Tegg, Katherine A. Marsden, Velandai Srikanth, John Blangero, Ray M. Lowenthal, Simon J. Foote, Joanne L. Dickinson

School of Medicine Publications

Telomere length has a biological link to cancer, with excessive telomere shortening leading to genetic instability and resultant malignant transformation. Telomere length is heritable and genetic variants determining telomere length have been identified. Telomere biology has been implicated in the development of hematological malignancies (HMs), therefore, closer examination of telomere length in HMs may provide further insight into genetic etiology of disease development and support for telomere length as a prognostic factor in HMs. We retrospectively examined mean relative telomere length in the Tasmanian Familial Hematological Malignancies Study using a quantitative PCR method on genomic DNA from peripheral blood samples. …

Transarterial Embolization Of Renal Tumors Improves Surgical Outcomes: A Case Series, Henry Reinhart, Melhem Ghaleb, Brian R. Davis

School of Medicine Publications

Introduction

Operative treatment of renal tumors can be associated with a high rate of perioperative morbidity related to hemorrhage and injury to adjacent anatomical structures. This morbidity of solid organ surgery is especially prevalent when the lesion involves chronic inflammation or a desmoplastic reaction from a rapidly growing tumor. No consensus on the use of transarterial embolization has been fashioned as the number of prospective studies is small. This study proposes to examine the beneficial effects of selective transarterial embolization of the kidney prior to surgical resection.

Presentation of case

A retrospective case matched review was performed of consecutive nephroureterectomies …
