Influence Of Native And Processed Cereal Grain Fibers On Gut Health, Junyi Yang Jul 2015

Influence Of Native And Processed Cereal Grain Fibers On Gut Health, Junyi Yang

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Cereal fibers that can be metabolized by gut microbiota have been shown to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Increased consumption of cereal fibers may improve host / gut microbiota interactions in obesity and other metabolic diseases by normalizing gut dysbiosis. The present dissertation describes four research projects to assess the impact of cereal dietary fibers on gut microbiota and host metabolism. In the first study, we determined the treatment temperatures for production of soluble, non-digestible, feruloylated oligo- and polysaccharides (FOPS) from maize bran and wheat bran, and determined the fermentation properties of partially purified FOPS from …

With advent of new technologies, more data is being collected than ever before. Data is pouring in from every conceivable direction: from operational and transactional systems, from Micro array experiments and Genome Wide Association Studies, from inbound and outbound customer contact points, from mobile media and the Web to mention a few. Researchers and investigators in many fields are faced with the problem of identifying important effects among thousands of variables in high dimensional data sets. This process often results in non or weekly identified effects. Nowadays a common problem when processing data sets with large number of variables compared …

How Does Self-Presentation Concern Relate To Language Use In Online Social Networking?, David M. Kovaz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Millions of people worldwide use online social networking sites (SNSs) such as Facebook and Twitter for interpersonal interaction and self-presentation. Theories of computer-mediated communication suggest that SNSs offer unique affordances and pose complex challenges to self-presentation (particularly in audience management) compared to face-to-face settings. One of the most fundamental ways in which people present themselves to others is through the use of language. The goal of the present work is to better understand language use in online self-presentation by exploring how the degree of concern people have about their self-presentation relates to their word choices in SNS posts (i.e., status …

Phylogenomic Data Help Resolve The Phylogeny Of Weevils (Superfamily Curculioinoidea), Alexander Lance Aitken Jul 2015

Phylogenomic Data Help Resolve The Phylogeny Of Weevils (Superfamily Curculioinoidea), Alexander Lance Aitken

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Superfamily Curculionoidea Latreille, 1802 (weevils) is an extraordinarily species rich clade. With 61,851 described species in 5,584 genera, weevils account for 16% of all described beetle species (389,000 species). The purpose of this thesis was to reconstruct the higher-level phylogeny of Curculionoidea using a newly developed approach for generating phylogenomic data, known as "anchored phylogenomics" (AE). This study marks the first time that AE has been used in beetles. A total of 70 weevil species from all families and most subfamilies were sampled including two outgroups. All families were recovered as monophyletic, except Nemonychidae, which was rendered paraphyletic by Anthribidae. …

Revisiting The Afterlife: The Inadequacies Of "Heaven" And "Hell", Christopher P. Davis Jul 2015

Revisiting The Afterlife: The Inadequacies Of "Heaven" And "Hell", Christopher P. Davis

Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research

This paper deals with some of the ambiguities that are associated with the intermediate and final states after death. Whereas many in the church have dismissed these concepts as myths of the ancients, this discussion shows how the grounding of such beliefs in the Hebrew mindset was the key to Jesus’ own teachings about the afterlife. The argument begins by developing a biblical anthropology over against the modern naturalistic anthropologies that have largely dominated the philosophical and theological scenes. From here we look at the Old Testament concept of the afterlife, and how the modern view that the Hebrews were …

The Comment will then review American problems with pharmaceutical products liability, and solutions that other commentators have proposed. Finally, the Comment will propose that Congress erect barriers to filing claims against manufacturers for drugs that meet or exceed a higher level of FDA approval, like Bendectin and Prozac, through a …

Justice Brennan's Gender Jurisprudence, Rebecca Korzec Jul 2015

Justice Brennan's Gender Jurisprudence, Rebecca Korzec

Akron Law Review

However, less attention has been focused on Justice Brennan's dramatic impact on the Supreme Court's gender jurisprudence. More than any other member of the Court, Justice Brennan recognized the complexity and pervasiveness of sex discrimination and its costs to society as a whole. Brennan's opinions recognized that sex differentiation is largely cultural in origin, rather than based on "real" gender differences. As a result, Justice Brennan created a truly independent gender jurisprudence, eventually emerging as the architect of the Supreme Court's contemporary test for evaluating claims of sex-based discrimination.

Understanding the significance of Brennan's contribution requires an appreciation of the …

Educational Entrepreneurship As Reform Strategy For St. Louis Public Schools From 2003 To 2009, Nathalie Henderson

Dissertations

“Educational Entrepreneurship” has increasingly become a buzz word, theory of change, silver bullet for countless so called education reformers who look to fix urban education by allowing alternative routes to teacher certification, public- private partnerships and the creation of charter schools. I have chosen autoethnography to highlight critical events from my own professional experience to illustrate the effects of educational entrepreneurship on The St. Louis Public Schools. This study used critical race theory as a lens to probe my narrative not only as a participant in educational entrepreneurship but also as Black, female educator. The end result is a reflective …

The Mitochondrial Peptidase Pitrilysin Degrades Islet Amyloid Polypeptide In Beta-Cells, Hanjun Guan, K. Martin Chow, Eunsuk Song, Nirmal Verma, Florin Despa, Louis B. Hersh

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Amyloid formation and mitochondrial dysfunction are characteristics of type 2 diabetes. The major peptide constituent of the amyloid deposits in type 2 diabetes is islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP). In this study, we found that pitrilysin, a zinc metallopeptidase of the inverzincin family, degrades monomeric, but not oligomeric, islet amyloid polypeptide in vitro. In insulinoma cells when pitrilysin expression was decreased to 5% of normal levels, there was a 60% increase in islet amyloid polypeptide-induced apoptosis. In contrast, overexpression of pitrilysin protects insulinoma cells from human islet amyloid polypeptide-induced apoptosis. Since pitrilysin is a mitochondrial protein, we used immunofluorescence staining …

Akirin-Mediated Gene Regulation During Cardiac Development, Austin M. Howard Jul 2015

Akirin-Mediated Gene Regulation During Cardiac Development, Austin M. Howard

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

The highly conserved nuclear protein Akirin was previously identified as a cofactor that modulates Twist transcription factor activity during muscle development in Drosophila melanogaster. Akirin mediates an interaction between the Twist transcription factor and the multisubunit Brahma SWI/SNF-class chromatin remodeling complex at control elements of the Dmef2 locus to maintain optimal myogenic gene expression levels. Therefore, Akirin represents a class of novel secondary cofactors that work with transcription machinery to link transcription factor output with chromatin remodeling machinery to facilitate gene expression. Previous work establishes that Twist and Akirin also interact at Twist-responsive control elements of the tinman gene, …

Beneficial Effects Of Temperate Forage Legumes That Contain Condensed Tannins, Jennifer W. Macadam, Juan J. Villalba

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The two temperate forage legumes containing condensed tannins (CT) that promote ruminant production are birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.; BFT) and sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.; SF). Both are well-adapted to the cool-temperate climate and alkaline soils of the Mountain West USA. Condensed tannins comprise a diverse family of bioactive chemicals with multiple beneficial functions for ruminants, including suppression of internal parasites and enteric methane. Birdsfoot trefoil contains 10 to 40 g·CT·kg−1 dry matter (DM), while SF contains 30 to 80 g·CT·kg−1 DM. Our studies have focused on these two plant species and have demonstrated consistently elevated rates of gain for …

Evidence For Changes In Subsurface Circulation In The Late Eocene Equatorial Pacific From Radiolarian-Bound Nitrogen Isotope Values, Rebecca S. Robinson, Theodore C. Moore, Andrea M. Erhardt, Howie D. Scher Jul 2015

Evidence For Changes In Subsurface Circulation In The Late Eocene Equatorial Pacific From Radiolarian-Bound Nitrogen Isotope Values, Rebecca S. Robinson, Theodore C. Moore, Andrea M. Erhardt, Howie D. Scher

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Microfossil-bound organic matter represents an important archive of surface ocean environmental information. Sedimentary nitrogen (N) isotope reconstructions of surface nitrate consumption and nitrogen source changes are made using fossil diatom (autotrophs) and planktic foraminiferal (heterotrophs)-bound organic matter with success. However, because diatoms and planktic foraminifera are poorly preserved and sedimentary organic matter content is near zero during the late Eocene, our ability to examine nutrient dynamics across this important climate transition is limited. Here we present new data exploring the use of N isotope records from radiolarian tests. A comparison of surface ocean nitrate and core top bulk and radiolarian …

Development Of Polymer Composite Based Enabling Technologies For Lab-On-A-Chip Devices, Vinicio Carias Jul 2015

Development Of Polymer Composite Based Enabling Technologies For Lab-On-A-Chip Devices, Vinicio Carias

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents enabling technologies to fabricate thermo-responsive polymer composite based Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) devices. LOC devices, also known as micro-total-analytical systems (microTAS) or microfluidic devices can amalgamate miniaturized laboratory functions on a single chip. This significant size reduction decreases the amount of required fluid volumes down to nano or pico-liters. The main commercial application of LOC devices is the biomedical fields. However, these devices are anticipated to make a technological revolution similar to the way miniaturization changed computers. In fact, medical and chemical analyses are predicted to shift from room-sized laboratories to hand-held portable devices.

This dissertation is divided into …

Understory Tree Composition, Diversity And Natural Regeneration Status Of Uluguru Forests In Morogoro- Tanzania, David S. Kacholi Jul 2015

Understory Tree Composition, Diversity And Natural Regeneration Status Of Uluguru Forests In Morogoro- Tanzania, David S. Kacholi

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Most of the studies on tropical forests vegetation have tended to focus on trees with a diameter at breast height (DBH) greater or equal to 10cm, and limited attention has been paid to understory. This study was conducted in Uluguru forests in Morogoro region, Tanzania, with an objective of describing the understory tree composition, diversity and natural regeneration of some threatened species in the seven surveyed forests. Sampling was done in the forests whereby classification of understory was done into three layers: seedling (individuals with height < 1m), small sapling (DBH ≤ 3 cm), and large sapling (3 < DBH < 10 cm) layers. Large saplings were sampled in 20m × 20m plots, while subplots of 5m ×5m and 2m ×2m were placed at the centre of each plot for sampling small saplings and seedlings, respectively. A total of 2119 seedlings, 1798 small saplings, and 2585 large saplings belonging 91, 102, and 104 species, respectively, were recorded. Fabaceae was the most speciosefamily in all the studied compartments, and had higher familial importance value (FIV). The seedling layer had higher tree density than the large and small sapling layers, but the large and small sapling layers were more diverse than the seedling layer (p < 0.05).The species richness in each forest was significantly higher in the understory than overstory layer (p < 0.034); and the pairing was strongly positively correlated (r = 096, p = 0.0003). The Sørensen coefficients of similarities between understory and overstory ranged between 0.53–0.77, and were higher within each forest than among them. All forests revealed to have good regeneration, though it is important to understand that some species unveiled poor or hampered regeneration pattern. In summary, the understory was observed to be speciose than overstory layer; it was dominated by family Fabaceae, and the natural regeneration of the forests were good, however, some species need due attention.

Nf-Κb Regulation Of C-Flip Promotes Tnfα-Mediated Raf Inhibitor Resistance In Melanoma., Yongping Shao, Kaitlyn Le, Hanyin Cheng, Andrew E. Aplin Jul 2015

Nf-Κb Regulation Of C-Flip Promotes Tnfα-Mediated Raf Inhibitor Resistance In Melanoma., Yongping Shao, Kaitlyn Le, Hanyin Cheng, Andrew E. Aplin

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Targeted inhibitors elicit heterogeneous clinical responses in genetically stratified groups of patients. Although most studies focus on tumor intrinsic properties, factors in the tumor microenvironment were recently found to modulate the response to inhibitors. Here, we show that in cutaneous BRAF V600E melanoma, the cytokine tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) blocks RAF inhibitor-induced apoptosis via activation of NF-κB. Several NF-κB-dependent factors are upregulated following TNFα and RAF inhibitor treatment. Of these factors, we show that death receptor inhibitor cellular caspase 8 (FLICE)-like inhibitory protein (c-FLIP) is required for TNFα-induced protection against RAF inhibitor. Overexpression of c-FLIP_S or c-FLIP_L isoform decreased RAF …

Genome Sequence And Comparative Analysis Of A Putative Entomopathogenic Serratia Isolated From Caenorhabditis Briggsae, Feseha Abebe-Akele, Louis S. Tisa, Vaughn S. Cooper, Philip J. Hatcher, Eyualem Abebe, William Kelley Thomas

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

Background: Entomopathogenic associations between nematodes in the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabdus with their cognate bacteria from the bacterial genera Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus, respectively, are extensively studied for their potential as biological control agents against invasive insect species. These two highly coevolved associations were results of convergent evolution. Given the natural abundance of bacteria, nematodes and insects, it is surprising that only these two associations with no intermediate forms are widely studied in the entomopathogenic context. Discovering analogous systems involving novel bacterial and nematode species would shed light on the evolutionary processes involved in the transition from free living organisms to …
