Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the 10 smallest molecules found in nature. It is a simple gaseous free radical whose predominant functions is that of a messenger through cGMP. In mammals, NO is synthesized by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS) of which there are three isoforms. Neuronal (nNOS, NOS1) and endothelial (eNOS, NOS3) are constitutive calcium-dependent forms of the enzyme that regulate neural and vascular function respectively. The third isoform (iNOS, NOS2), is calcium-independent and is inducible. In many tumors, iNOS expression is high, however, the role of iNOS during tumor development is very complex and quite perplexing, …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder associated with advanced age, is the most common cause of dementia globally. AD is characterised by cognitive dysfunction, deposition of amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and neuro-inflammation. Inflammation of the brain is a key pathological hallmark of AD. Thus, clinical and immunopathological evidence of AD could be potentially supported by inflammatory mediators, including cytokines, chemokines, the complement system, acute phase proteins and oxidative mediators. In particular, oxidative mediators may actively contribute to the progression of AD and on-going inflammation in the brain. This review provides an overview of the functions and activities of inflammatory mediators …

The precise assembly of inner ear hair cell stereocilia into rows of increasing height is critical for mechanotransduction and the sense of hearing. Yet, how the lengths of actin-based stereocilia are regulated remains poorly understood. Mutations of the molecular motor myosin 15 stunt stereocilia growth and cause deafness. We found that hair cells express two isoforms of myosin 15 that differ by inclusion of an 133-kDa N-terminal domain, and that these isoforms can selectively traffic to different stereocilia rows. Using an isoform-specific knockout mouse, we show that hair cells expressing only the small isoform remarkably develop normal stereocilia bundles. However, …

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of death due to cancer and the third most common cancer in men and women in the USA. Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) is known to be activated in CRC and is strongly implicated in its development and progression. Therefore, activated NF-κB constitutes a bona fide target for drug development in this type of malignancy. Many epidemiological and interventional studies have established nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as a viable chemopreventive strategy against CRC. Our previous studies have shown that several novel hydrogen sulfide-releasing NSAIDs are promising anticancer agents and are safer derivatives …
Modulation Of Respiratory Tract Responses By Acetaminophen, Gregory J. Smith
Modulation Of Respiratory Tract Responses By Acetaminophen, Gregory J. Smith
Doctoral Dissertations
The prevalence of asthma is increasing, and the cause(s) of this increase are unknown. The etiology of asthma is complex and includes both genetic, developmental, and environmental components. Epidemiological evidence suggests that acetaminophen (APAP, N-acetyl-p-aminophenol) may play a role in the pathogenesis of asthma. The goal of this thesis was to test the plausibility of the “acetaminophen hypothesis” in asthma, which states that therapeutic use of acetaminophen is linked to the increase in asthma prevalence through pro-oxidant effects of the drug.
The airways of the respiratory system represent the largest surface area of the body exposed to the …
Synthesis Of Natural And Unnatural Sulfatide Ligands For Nkt Cell Activation And Olefin Cross-Metathesis Of Α-Methylene-Β-Lactones As A Methodology For The Rapid Assembly Of Β-Lactones, Kaddy Camara
Doctoral Dissertations
Sulfatides are innate glycosphingolipids shown to activate a subpopulation of type II NKT cells. Their activation has been reported to sometimes have antagonistic roles to those of type I NKT cells in some disease models. This has sparked a lot of interest in the synthesis of natural and unnatural sulfatides for an examination of their influence on NKT cell responses. The design, synthesis and evaluation of type II NKT cell activation of several sulfatide ligands are described in this thesis.
A two-step methodology has been developed for the rapid assembly of disubstituted β-lactones. The first step is olefin cross metathesis …

Narrow Channel Accumulated Body Mosfets: Design, Modeling And Experimental Verification, Mustafa B. Akbulut
Doctoral Dissertations
Current leakage on a planar field effect transistor (FET) channel’s side surfaces is more significant as the channel width decreases. Traps and positive fixed charges at the interface of Silicon and the isolation dielectric (STI) are mainly responsible for this. An accumulated body approach introduces a side-gate structure surrounding the body of the transistor, which can be used to accumulate the body in narrow structures to suppress the leakage. A separately controlled top gate is used for transistor action.
In this work, the fabrication process and electrical behavior of short and narrow-channel (10 nm scale) bulk Si accumulated body MOSFETs …

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Studies analyzing mental health care utilization in veterans with a co-occurrence of a medical and psychological diagnosis are still underrepresented in the literature. The primary purpose of this study is to examine psychological screening methods of veterans diagnosed with cancer and determining when these veterans are more likely to endorse psychological symptoms. This information can contribute to the discussion of effective ways of integrating mental health screening in specialty care settings. A correlational, causal-comparative research design is employed to answer the study research questions and hypotheses. The participants include Vietnam, Korean, and World War II veterans seeking oncology services at …

The Maternal Social Environment Shapes Offspring Growth, Physiology, And Behavioural Phenotype In Guinea Pigs., N Von Engelhardt, Gj Kowalski, A Guenther
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Prenatal conditions influence offspring development in many species. In mammals, the effects of social density have traditionally been considered a detrimental form of maternal stress. Now their potential adaptive significance is receiving greater attention.Sex-specific effects of maternal social instability on offspring in guinea pigs (Cavia aperea f. porcellus) have been interpreted as adaptations to high social densities, while the effects of low social density are unknown. Hence, we compared morphological, behavioural and physiological development between offspring born to mothers housed either individually or in groups during the second half of pregnancy.Females housed individually and females housed in groups gave birth …
Regulation-Tolerant Weapons, Regulation-Resistant Weapons And The Law Of War, Sean Watts
Regulation-Tolerant Weapons, Regulation-Resistant Weapons And The Law Of War, Sean Watts
International Law Studies
The historical record of international weapons law reveals both regulation-tolerant weapons and regulation-resistant weapons, identifiable by a number of criteria, including effectiveness, novelty, deployment, medical compatibility, disruptiveness and notoriety. This article identifies these criteria both to explain and inform existing weapons law, and also to facilitate efforts to identify weapons and emerging technology that may prove susceptible to future law of war regulation. By charting both the history and methodology of weapons law with a view toward identifying forces and influences that have made some weapons susceptible to international regulation and made others resistant, this article offers a starting point …

© 2015, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. Main conclusion: We have evaluated the endogenous expression and molecular properties of selected Group 3 LEA proteins fromArtemia franciscana, and the capacity of selected Groups 1 and 3 proteins transfected into various desiccation-sensitive cell lines to improve tolerance to drying. Organisms inhabiting both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems frequently are confronted with the problem of water loss for multiple reasons—exposure to hypersalinity, evaporative water loss, and restriction of intracellular water due to freezing of extracellular fluids. Seasonal desiccation can become severe and lead to the production of tolerant propagules and entry into the state of anhydrobiosis …

A Person-Centered Examination Of Latino Youth Depressive Symptom Trajectories: The Role Of Youth, Parent, And Dyadic Familism, Jessica Annabel Arizaga
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
A growing body of literature indicates Latino youth are at greater risk for depression relative to other racial/ethnic groups (CDC, 2014). Research examining predictors of Latino youth depression suggests higher familial values might buffer against youth depressive symptoms (Polo & Lopez, 2009; Zeiders et al., 2013b). However, longitudinal relationships between these variables remain largely unexamined. Furthermore, the literature on longitudinal youth depressive symptoms is mixed, with both increases and decreases being observed over time using group-centered analyses. The present study has three major aims: 1) map the trajectories of depressive symptomology among middle-school age Latino youth over the course of …

Effects Of Temperature And Water Flow On Morphology Of Astyanax Mexicanus (Teleostei: Characidae), Winer Daniel Reyes
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Most aquatic vertebrates are ectotherms. As a consequence, they are particularly susceptible to variation in environmental conditions during development, which can impact their phenotypes and survival. In fishes, vertebral morphology and body shape are particularly susceptible to changes in temperature and water flow regimes, two variables that are often correlated along altitudinal gradients in streams. This study addresses the impact of variation in these ecologically important environmental variables on the phenotype of the emerging model species Astyanax mexicanus (Teleostei: Characidae). Specifically, this study examines how variation in temperature and water flow impact vertebral number and body shape variation. Fish from …
