A Clinically Relevant Closed-Head Model Of Single And Repeat Concussive Injuries In The Adult Rat Using A Controlled Cortical Impact Device, Naseem Jamnia
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Recently, cases of multiple concussions, or mild traumatic brain injury, in athletes have received increased attention. Compared to single concussion (sTBI), repeat concussions (rTBI) can produce significant long-term consequences and increased risk for neurodegenerative disease. However, mechanisms underlying this difference are poorly understood and are best elucidated using an animal model. Closed-head models of rTBI have been developed in mice and juvenile rats, but few have been developed in the adult rat. To the best of our knowledge, there is no closed-head model using a commercially available device, including the Controlled Cortical Impact (CCI) device.
We developed a clinically relevant …

Toward Improving Metalloenzyme Inhibitor Design: A Thermodynamic Study Of Small Molecule Interactions With Zinc(Ii) And Calcium(Ii), Sophia Robinson
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Histone deacetylases (HDAC) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are metalloenzymes with catalytic Zn2+ ions that are over-expressed in a number of physiological conditions; thus, inhibiting these enzymes is an important therapeutic approach for many diseases. An HDAC structural mimetic was developed using a ligand, bis(2-picolyl)amine (BPA), that strongly chelated Zn2+ and did not dissociate upon addition of an HDAC inhibitor. Using Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) it was found that BPA binds Zn2+ very strongly in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. Two known zinc- binding HDAC inhibitors, acetohydroxamic acid and 8-hydroxyquinoline, were used to study the HDAC inhibitor interaction with the BPA-Zn2+ complex …
Onset Patterns Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome And Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: A Mixed Method Approach, Meredyth Evans
Onset Patterns Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome And Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: A Mixed Method Approach, Meredyth Evans
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) refer to a debilitating illness without a universally accepted or well-understood etiology. Some experts have suggested that there are multiple pathways to the development of ME and CFS, which may also indicate multiple onset patterns. Due to unanswered questions regarding etiology, the onset of ME and CFS is considered a key area of inquiry.
Case criteria for ME and CFS and much of the academic literature suggest that patients typically experience one of two possible onset patterns: sudden or gradual. Many experts consider the mode of ME …
The Role Of Gender Identityand Stereotype Awareness On Sexual Negotiations Strategies For Women, Or'shaundra Tre'nay Benson
The Role Of Gender Identityand Stereotype Awareness On Sexual Negotiations Strategies For Women, Or'shaundra Tre'nay Benson
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The consequences of unsafe heterosexual sexual behaviors including unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections continue to create significant public health problems in the United States. Although research has demonstrated that young adults in general have higher rates of sexually transmitted infections compared to other age groups, young women are especially vulnerable to the ill-effects of unsafe sexual practices, as they must contend with the physicality of an unplanned pregnancy and larger incidences of asymptotic infection transmissions. However, missing from the research and discourse regarding what specific factors may be contributing to high rates of risky behaviors in heterosexual women is …

Emerging Technologies And Loac Signaling, Eric Talbot Jensen
Emerging Technologies And Loac Signaling, Eric Talbot Jensen
International Law Studies
As States seek to weaponize new technologies such as robotics, cyber tools and nanotechnology, the current law of armed conflict (LOAC) that guides the employment of existing weapons will signal rules and principles that should guide national decisions on what new technologies to weaponize and how to do so in a way that ensures compliance with battlefield regulation. LOAC has served this "signaling" function historically with respect to innovative weapon systems such as balloons, submarines, airplanes, and nuclear weapons, and will continue to do so as nations look forward to potentially weaponizing emerging technologies.
Visual Hallucinations Differential Diagnosis Annotated Decision Tree, Shelly D. Davis
Visual Hallucinations Differential Diagnosis Annotated Decision Tree, Shelly D. Davis
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Differential diagnosis of the etiology of visual hallucinations is challenging. Although visual hallucinations can be symptomatic of psychiatric disorder, they more commonly indicate neurological or medical disorders, sensory impairment, or substance intoxication or withdrawal. Accurate diagnosis and treatment is crucial given that misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment intervention can have profound consequences. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the most prevalent causes of visual hallucinations, review the DSM-5 hallucination decision tree, and provide an annotated visual hallucination differential diagnosis decision tree.

Atomic Structure Of Grk5 Reveals Distinct Structural Features Novel For G Protein-Coupled Receptor Kinases, Konstantin E. Komolov, Anshul Bhardwaj, Jeffrey L. Benovic
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
G protein-coupled receptor kinases (GRKs) are members of the protein kinase A, G, and C families (AGC) and play a central role in mediating G protein-coupled receptor phosphorylation and desensitization. One member of the family, GRK5, has been implicated in several human pathologies, including heart failure, hypertension, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer disease. To gain mechanistic insight into GRK5 function, we determined a crystal structure of full-length human GRK5 at 1.8 Å resolution. GRK5 in complex with the ATP analog 5'-adenylyl β,γ-imidodiphosphate or the nucleoside sangivamycin crystallized as a monomer. The C-terminal tail (C-tail) of AGC kinase domains is a highly …

The human DNA glycosylase NEIL1 was recently demonstrated to initiate prereplicative base excision repair (BER) of oxidized bases in the replicating genome, thus preventing mutagenic replication. A significant fraction of NEIL1 in cells is present in large cellular complexes containing DNA replication and other repair proteins, as shown by gel filtration. However, how the interaction of NEIL1 affects its recruitment to the replication site for prereplicative repair was not investigated. Here, we show that NEIL1 binarily interacts with the proliferating cell nuclear antigen clamp loader replication factor C, DNA polymerase δ, and DNA ligase I in the absence of DNA …

In this work, sub-100 nm crosslinked polythioether nanoparticles were synthesized via thiol–ene photopolymerization in miniemulsion using high-energy homogenization. The effects of the miniemulsion formulation and homogenization parameters – including inhibitor concentration, surfactant concentration, organic weight fraction, ultrasonication time and amplitude – on nanoparticle size and size distribution were investigated. Thiol–ene nanoparticles with a mean particle diameter of 46 nm were obtained under optimized conditions for the current system at 2.5 wt% organic fraction and 20 mM surfactant concentration. In an effort to demonstrate potential utility of thiol–ene nanoparticles, we exploit the step-growth radical mechanism of thiol–ene photopolymerization under non-stoichiometric conditions …

Estimating Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Abundance Using Noninvasive Sampling At A Mineral Lick Within A National Park Wilderness Area, Kathryn A. Schoenecker, Mary Kay Watry, Laura E. Ellison, Michael K. Schwartz, Gordon Luikart
Western North American Naturalist
Conservation of species requires accurate population estimates. We used genetic markers from feces to determine bighorn sheep abundance for a herd that was hypothesized to be declining and in need of population status monitoring. We sampled from a small but accessible portion of the population’s range where animals naturally congregate at a natural mineral lick to test whether we could accurately estimate population size by sampling from an area where animals concentrate. We used mark-recapture analysis to derive population estimates, and compared estimates from this smaller spatial sampling to estimates from sampling of the entire bighorn sheep range. We found …

Sliding Bones: Movement Of Skeletal Material Over Smith Creek Playa In Nevada And Its Taphonomic And Paleontologic Implications, George D. Baumgardner, Brian S. Shaffer
Western North American Naturalist
In July 2013, a unique type of movement was noted of cattle (Bos taurus) bones across the surface of Smith Creek Valley Playa, in central Nevada. Portions of 3 skeletal elements and 2 sections of articulated elements were found at the ends of shallow, linear, furrow-like trails inscribed in the playa surface. These trails, with their skeletal material, are similar to those produced by the phenomenon described as “racing” or “sailing rocks” that is best documented from Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, California. As has been recently observed for the rocks of Racetrack Playa, the material here was …

Range Extension For The White-Nosed Coati (Nasua Narica) In Southeastern Guanajuato, México, María Eugenia Espinosa-Flores, Carlos A. López-González
Western North American Naturalist
We report the first photographic record of the white-nosed coati (Nasua narica) in the southeastern portion of the state of Guanajuato. Although this species is considered abundant and widely distributed in México, Guanajuato is not considered part of its current distribution. Because of the lack of records in surrounding areas, it is not possible to determine if there is an existing linkage to other populations. Thus, it is imperative to continue monitoring this species in the region to identify and assess the connectivity of other established populations and to ensure the species’ long-term conservation.

Mitochondrial Dna Diversity And Phylogeography Of Lucania Interioris Inform Biodiversity Conservation In The Cuatro Ciénegas Basin, México, Evan W. Carson, Valeria Souza, Hector Espinosa-Pérez, Thomas F. Turner
Western North American Naturalist
The Cuatro Ciénegas killifish Lucania interioris is an endemic fundulid in the Chihuahuan Desert valley of Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila, México. It occurs in 3 major drainage regions of the basin and is limited primarily to naturally fragmented and physicochemically severe habitats of the valley floor. We assessed mitochondrial DNA variation and population genetic structure in L. interioris from 8 populations representative of the entire geographic range of this species, including its distribution within and among major drainage regions (western, central, and southeastern) of the valley. Five populations were invariant, including both populations in the western region (Haplotype A only), whereas …

I. Rules Of Macrocycle Topology: A [13]-Macrodilactone Case Study Ii. A Cardiac Glycoside Activities Link The Ion-Transport Function Of Na+/K+ Atpase To Breast Cancer Migration Via Correlative Sar, Anniefer N. Magpusao
Doctoral Dissertations
The overall structure of macrocycles is intimately linked to its biological activities and chemical reactivities. Delineating the factors that control the macrocycle structure will be very useful in developing novel probes, therapeutics and chemical transformations. Using a systematic strategy with the [13]-macrodilactones as model system and a combinational of X-ray crystallography and computational methods, a general model that explains the effect of stereogenic elements (stereogenic centers and stereogenic plane) on the overall structure (planar chirality, shape and topology) of the [13]-macrodilactone was constructed. A specific geometrical arrangement in the stereogenic centers set the planar chirality (either pS or p …

Genetic Characterization Of Two Populations Of Bonneville Cutthroat Trout In Great Basin National Park, Usa, Derek D. Houston, R. Paul Evans, Jared M. Crowley, Dennis K. Shiozawa
Western North American Naturalist
The cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) is a popular sport fish that is native to the waters of western North America. Cutthroat trout comprises many subspecies, each of which has experienced range reduction resulting from anthropogenic activities. Hence, there is a general interest from management agencies to assess the genetic structure of managed populations of cutthroat trout subspecies to ensure that proper conservation plans are implemented. Herein, we utilize microsatellite data to characterize the genetic composition of 2 populations of Bonneville cutthroat trout in Great Basin National Park: Mill Creek and South Fork Big Wash. Mill Creek was used …

Tree Mortality In Mature Riparian Forest: Implications For Fremont Cottonwood Conservation In The American Southwest, Douglas C. Andersen
Western North American Naturalist
Mature tree mortality rates are poorly documented in desert riparian woodlands. I monitored deaths and calculated annual survivorship probability (PS) in 2 groups of large (27–114 cm DBH), old (≥40 years old) Fremont cottonwood (Populus fremontiiWats.) in a stand along the free-flowing Yampa River in semiarid northwestern Colorado. PS = 0.993 year–1 in a group (n = 126) monitored over 2003–2013, whereas PS = 0.985 year–1 in a group (n = 179) monitored over the same period plus 3 earlier years (2000–2003) that included drought and a defoliating insect outbreak. …

Late-Season Survey Of Bumble Bees Along Canadian Highways Of British Columbia And Yukon Territories, Timothy D. Hatten, James P. Strange, Jill M. Maxwell
Western North American Naturalist
Bumble bees are important pollinators of flowering plants, foraging and providing pollination services throughout the growing season. They are adapted to cool temperatures and are among the most important of all pollinators at high elevations and northern latitudes. Over the past several decades, multiple species of bumble bees have experienced declines in both geographic range and abundance in Europe and North America, while 4 species of the genus Bombus (Bombus) have suffered dramatic declines in the United States. Such declines are not as evident in Alaska, and the status of Bombus remains relatively unknown in the adjacent territories …

Western North American Naturalist
Desert almond, Prunus fasciculata (Rosaceae), is a Mojave Desert shrub that primarily produces male and female flowers on different plants. I investigated the plant’s pollination by examining pollen loads on insects aspirated from female flowers on 3 dioecious shrubs, growing near male-flowering shrubs, at one locality in southern Nevada during March 2014. Pollen loads were analyzed on 9 species of Diptera in Bombyliidae, Syrphidae, Calliphoridae, and Tachinidae and 4 species of Hymenoptera in Andrenidae (all female Andrena). All but 4 of the 65 flies and 38 bees aspirated carriedP. fasciculata pollen grains, recognized by their tricolpate shape in …

Our knowledge of the biology of lizards in the genus Xenosaurus has increased over the past 20 years. Several generalities appear to hold for these lizards; however, some traits appear to vary among populations and species of Xenosaurus. Here we report on the thermal ecology, sexual dimorphism, and diet of a population of the recently describedXenosaurus tzacualtipantecus from Hidalgo, Mexico. The mean body temperature (Tb) of X. tzacualtipantecus in our population (18.1 °C) is the lowest mean Tb yet observed in Xenosaurus. The close relationships between Tb and air temperatures (Ta) …
