Synthesis And Structure−Activity Relationships Of Tambjamines And B‑Ring Functionalized Prodiginines As Potent Antimalarials, Papireddy Kancharla, Jane Xu Kelly, Kevin A. Reynolds Aug 2015

Synthesis And Structure−Activity Relationships Of Tambjamines And B‑Ring Functionalized Prodiginines As Potent Antimalarials, Papireddy Kancharla, Jane Xu Kelly, Kevin A. Reynolds

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Synthesis and antimalarial activity of 94 novel bipyrrole tambjamines (TAs) and a library of B-ring functionalized tripyrrole prodiginines (PGs) against a panel of Plasmodium falciparum strains are described. The activity and structure–activity relationships demonstrate that the ring-C of PGs can be replaced by an alkylamine, providing for TAs with retained/enhanced potency. Furthermore, ring-B of PGs/TAs can be substituted with short alkyl substitutions at either 4-position (replacement of OMe) or 3- and 4-positions without impacting potency. Eight representative TAs and two PGs have been evaluated for antimalarial activity against multidrug-resistant P. yoelii in mice in the dose range of 5–100 mg/kg …

Converting Croplands To Grassland: A Spatial Analysis Of The Economic Feasibility Of Soil Greenhouse Gas Mitigation In Midwest, United States, Paco C. Defrancis Aug 2015

Converting Croplands To Grassland: A Spatial Analysis Of The Economic Feasibility Of Soil Greenhouse Gas Mitigation In Midwest, United States, Paco C. Defrancis

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

The global agriculture sector is responsible for close 20% of the aggregate anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions emitted since the start of the industrial age. Much of these emissions are attributed to the degradation of soils due to land use change when native ecosystems were converted to agricultural fields. Soil organic carbon (SOC) has been found to decrease in temperate soils when the native (such as a forest or grassland) ecosystem is replace by croplands. The aggregate amount of organic carbon stored in soils globally is estimated be 3.3x the size of the atmospheric carbon pool. Further soil degradation and …

Preferences For Coral Reef And Fishery Management In Okinawa, Japan, Nils Carlson Aug 2015

Preferences For Coral Reef And Fishery Management In Okinawa, Japan, Nils Carlson

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This study is an example of how a nonmarket valuation method – a choice experiment – can be used to influence and guide ecosystem conservation efforts. Using a choice experiment survey, this study estimates the willingness to pay (WTP) for certain hypothetical attributes of a restored and conserved coral reef in Okinawa, Japan. I find that an increase in the amount of fish available to catch in ten years as well as an increase in the extent and health of the coral reefs and the number of marine biodiversity found in the Okinawan waters after ten-years, both positively affect respondent’s …

The Effects Of Land Conservation On Productivity, Robert Mccormick, Carolyn Fuwa Aug 2015

The Effects Of Land Conservation On Productivity, Robert Mccormick, Carolyn Fuwa

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

In this research the relationship between productivity of land conservation is analyzed using panel data of the GDP and acres conserved of all 50 U.S. states from 1998-2005. Two main theories of the conservation productivity relationship exist. The first maintains that conservation impedes productivity because it does not allow land cultivation. Conversely, the second theory maintains that land conservation has a positive effect on GDP due to the recreation and tourism it creates. Through the use of fixed effects and random effects regressions, the amount of land conserved per state is not a significant predictor of state GDP The GDP …

Fictional And Fragmented Truths In Korean Adoptee Life Writing, Jenny Heijun Wills Aug 2015

Fictional And Fragmented Truths In Korean Adoptee Life Writing, Jenny Heijun Wills

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This article explores the ways that life writing allows transnational, transracial Asian adoptee authors to navigate their complex experiences of truth and authenticity. It also addresses the transformations adoptee authors make to the memoir genre in order to accommodate the particularities of their experiences. I analyze Jane Jeong Trenka’s foundational Asian adoption memoir, The Language of Blood, and Kim Sunée’s lesser-known text, Trail of Crumbs, paying attention to the ways that the authors’ hybridized and deliberately constructionist approaches to genre parallel some of the identity issues that are brought out in their respective books. I explore the significance …

“’Chinese Don’T Drink Coffee!’”: Coffee And Class Liminality In Elaine Mar’S Paper Daughter, Christian Aguiar Aug 2015

“’Chinese Don’T Drink Coffee!’”: Coffee And Class Liminality In Elaine Mar’S Paper Daughter, Christian Aguiar

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This article offers a reading of the foodservice spaces in Elaine Mar’s memoir Paper Daughter in order to suggest changes in the way we think about class liminality. It argues that by focusing not just on the way the socially-mobile narrator experiences liminality, but also on the ways her working-class parents and co-workers experience it, we can begin to consider some of the complexities and nuances the idea of the liminal offers. In so doing, the article suggests a slightly new approach to thinking about and teaching Paper Daughter.

The Illegible Pan: Racial Formation, Hybridity, And Chinatown In Sui Sin Far’S “‘Its Wavering Image’”, Caroline Porter Aug 2015

The Illegible Pan: Racial Formation, Hybridity, And Chinatown In Sui Sin Far’S “‘Its Wavering Image’”, Caroline Porter

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Drawing upon Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, this article offers an interpretation of “‘Its Wavering Image’” that explains the biracial main character, Pan’s, process of racialization. The argument is two fold: first, the paper contends that in this story, Sui Sin Far theorizes that race is performative rather than biological. Race does not come from characters’ bodies, but is rather an incorporated performance of codes. Pan’s race, then, depends not on her parentage or her biology, but on the “codes” she internalizes and embodies, codes that are fleshed out throughout the article through historical contextualization of San Francisco and Chinatown. …

Experimental Investigation Of Mechanical And Thermal Properties Of Silica Nanoparticle-Reinforced Poly(Acrylamide) Nanocomposite Hydrogels, Josergio Zaragoza, Nasim Babhadiashar, Victor O’Brien, Andrew Chang, Matthew Blanco, Aitor Zabalegui, Hohyun Lee, Prashanth Asuri Aug 2015

Experimental Investigation Of Mechanical And Thermal Properties Of Silica Nanoparticle-Reinforced Poly(Acrylamide) Nanocomposite Hydrogels, Josergio Zaragoza, Nasim Babhadiashar, Victor O’Brien, Andrew Chang, Matthew Blanco, Aitor Zabalegui, Hohyun Lee, Prashanth Asuri

Bioengineering

Current studies investigating properties of nanoparticle-reinforced polymers have shown that nanocomposites often exhibit improved properties compared to neat polymers. However, over two decades of research, using both experimental studies and modeling analyses, has not fully elucidated the mechanistic underpinnings behind these enhancements. Moreover, few studies have focused on developing an understanding among two or more polymer properties affected by incorporation of nanomaterials. In our study, we investigated the elastic and thermal properties of poly(acrylamide) hydrogels containing silica nanoparticles. Both nanoparticle concentration and size affected hydrogel properties, with similar trends in enhancements observed for elastic modulus and thermal diffusivity. We also …

Gendered Pronouns In The Classroom (August 24, 2015) Aug 2015

Gendered Pronouns In The Classroom (August 24, 2015)

Center for Faculty Enrichment

Gendered Pronouns in the Classroom- Monday 8/24 4-5pm in Gävle Room 1

Last spring, the college community asserted that it will be inclusive of people of all genders. Since this affirmation, members of the campus community have requested professional development about the basic ideas in this discussion ("What is the difference between sex and gender?") as well as techniques for being inclusive ("How can I avoid misgendering a student or respond when others do?"). In this session, we will share foundational vocabulary, develop strategies for inclusion around gendered pronouns, and hold a Q&A with a couple of students about …

Optical Measurements Of Whitecaps And Bubbles During Large Scale Wave Breaking In The Southern Ocean, Kaylan L. Randolph Aug 2015

Optical Measurements Of Whitecaps And Bubbles During Large Scale Wave Breaking In The Southern Ocean, Kaylan L. Randolph

Doctoral Dissertations

Wave breaking contributes to climate relevant processes, such as the production of sea salt aerosols and the exchange of gas (e.g. CO2, CH4, DMS, water vapor) and heat between the ocean and atmosphere. Quantifying these processes, however, has been hampered by the lack of field data under high wind conditions and the inherent challenges in measuring whitecaps. Here, optical tools were developed to estimate metrics of whitecaps and bubbles associated with wave breaking along the polar front zone of the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. In this study, wind speeds exceeded 15 m s …

Witches, Bitches, And The Patriarchy: Gender And Power In The Harry Potter Series, Delaney Bullinger Aug 2015

Witches, Bitches, And The Patriarchy: Gender And Power In The Harry Potter Series, Delaney Bullinger

Senior Theses

At the start of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling employs traditional gendered thinking in her construction of character roles, but as the series continues, the gender roles are complicated. In the three main communities of J.K. Rowling’s world – the Ministry, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the societies of the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix – a struggle between the constructive, equalizing force of white magic and the violent, dominating force of black magic influences the gender roles operative in each. As a vehicle for the exercise of magic, the nuclear family also influences …

There is something in our genome that dictates life expectancy and there is nothing that can be done to avoid this; indeed, there is not yet any record of a person who has cheated death. Our physical prowess can vacillate substantially in our lifetime according to our activity levels and nutritional status and we may fight aging, but we will inevitably lose. We have presented strong evidence that the atrophy which accompanies aging is to some extent caused by loss of innervation. We compared muscle biopsies of sedentary seniors to those of life long active seniors, and show that these …

Disturbance Alters Beta-Diversity But Not The Relative Importance Of Community Assembly Mechanisms, Jonathan A. Myers, Jonathan M. Chase, Raelene M. Crandall, Iván Jiménez Aug 2015

Disturbance Alters Beta-Diversity But Not The Relative Importance Of Community Assembly Mechanisms, Jonathan A. Myers, Jonathan M. Chase, Raelene M. Crandall, Iván Jiménez

Biology Faculty Research

  1. Ecological disturbances are often hypothesized to alter community assembly processes that influence variation in community composition (β-diversity). Disturbance can cause convergence in community composition (low β-diversity) by increasing niche selection of disturbance-tolerant species. Alternatively, disturbance can cause divergence in community composition (high β-diversity) by increasing habitat filtering across environmental gradients. However, because disturbance may also influence β-diversity through random sampling effects owing to changes in the number of individuals in local communities (community size) or abundances in the regional species pool, observed patterns of β-diversity alone cannot be used to unambiguously discern the relative importance of community assembly mechanisms.
  2. We …

O6-Methylguanosine Leads To Position-Dependent Effects On Ribosome Speed And Fidelity, Benjamin H. Hudson, Hani S. Zaher Aug 2015

O6-Methylguanosine Leads To Position-Dependent Effects On Ribosome Speed And Fidelity, Benjamin H. Hudson, Hani S. Zaher

Biology Faculty Research

Nucleic acids are under constant assault from endogenous and environmental agents that alter their physical and chemical properties. O6-methylation of guanosine (m(6)G) is particularly notable for its high mutagenicity, pairing with T, during DNA replication. Yet, while m(6)G accumulates in both DNA and RNA, little is known about its effects on RNA. Here, we investigate the effects of m(6)G on the decoding process, using a reconstituted bacterial translation system. m(6)G at the first and third position of the codon decreases the accuracy of tRNA selection. The ribosome readily incorporates near-cognate aminoacyl-tRNAs (aa-tRNAs) by forming m(6)G-uridine codon-anticodon pairs. Surprisingly, the introduction …

Undecided Empire: The Travails Of Imperial Representation Of Filipinos At The Greater America Exposition, 1899, Michael C. Hawkins

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle examines the first formal exhibit of Filipinos under American rule at the Greater America Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1899. It focuses specifically on the remarkably discursive forms of representation at a time before official discourses of empire and the “Philippines” or “Filipinos” were established. In this sense the exposition marked a rare instance of true colonial encounter in which the contingencies and vulnerabilities of empire were plainly manifest. The exposition also provided a critical baseline by which to gauge evolving discourses of representation at subsequent expositions, particularly the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Keywords: Greater America Exposition • Omaha …

The Science And Practice Of River Restoration, Ellen E. Wohl, Stuart N. Lane, Andrew C. Wilcox Aug 2015

The Science And Practice Of River Restoration, Ellen E. Wohl, Stuart N. Lane, Andrew C. Wilcox

Geosciences Faculty Publications

River restoration is one of the most prominent areas of applied water-resources science. From an initial focus on enhancing fish habitat or river appearance, primarily through structural modification of channel form, restoration has expanded to incorporate a wide variety of management activities designed to enhance river process and form. Restoration is conducted on headwater streams, large lowland rivers, and entire river networks in urban, agricultural, and less intensively human-altered environments. We critically examine how contemporary practitioners approach river restoration and challenges for implementing restoration, which include clearly identified objectives, holistic understanding of rivers as ecosystems, and the role of restoration …
