Summer Research And Creativity Grants, Uk Office Of Undergraduate Research

Kaleidoscope

The abstracts in this section were submitted by students who received Research and Creativity Awards for the summer of 2009. Many are not final reports because the projects were still in process when the submissions were due. Rather, they are progress reports. However, these abstracts provide a clear and wonderfully diverse picture of the broad range of scholarly activities being undertaken by undergraduates at the University of Kentucky.

Insights Into Alzheimer’S Disease: The Levels Of Signaling Proteins In Brain Of Control Subjects Versus Brain From Subjects With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Georgianne F. Tiu Aug 2015

Insights Into Alzheimer’S Disease: The Levels Of Signaling Proteins In Brain Of Control Subjects Versus Brain From Subjects With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Georgianne F. Tiu

Kaleidoscope

The purpose of this study was to measure the expression levels of key signaling proteins in brain tissue from subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) compared to control subjects. MCI is considered to be the beginning phase of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-κβ), phospho Bad (pBad), and ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1) are four of the proteins that were investigated. Trends of either decreases or increases in protein expression levels in MCI vs. control brain were investigated. Western blot analysis was used in order to identify these trends. These signaling protein levels are …

Development Of Transgenic Lines To Support Plant Cell Biology Research, Kristin Kopperud Aug 2015

Development Of Transgenic Lines To Support Plant Cell Biology Research, Kristin Kopperud

Kaleidoscope

Viruses pose a threat to humans in a variety of ways — from direct infection to imposing devastating effects on the agriculture industry. Prevention of such infection requires knowledge of the mechanisms of viral infection, both in animal- and plant-infecting species. The goal of this project was to identify plant factors that interact with viral proteins in the course of infection leading to disease. Sonchus yellow net virus (SYNV) and Potato yellow dwarf virus (PYDV) were used to test the hypothesis that the viruses utilize different subsets of host factors in order to infect Nicotiana benthamiana, despite both being …

The Agricultural Footprints On The Environment, Philip Houtz Aug 2015

The Agricultural Footprints On The Environment, Philip Houtz

Kaleidoscope

Industrialized agricultural systems have given America a convenient and affordable means to supply a surplus of food products to its citizens. Transgenic technology, synthesized fertilizers, advanced pesticides, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and the use of farm machinery have all contributed to humanity’s ability to feed the world’s rapidly growing population. However, the energy-intensive food operation of today may not be as ideal as we assume. Fossil fuels are burned to meet the energy requirements for the continual production of large quantities of fertilizer and to keep farm machines operational. Fertilizer and pesticide runoff from farmland ultimately drains into rivers …

Synthesis Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems Safety Reports, Robert Joslin Aug 2015

Synthesis Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems Safety Reports, Robert Joslin

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

The proliferation and extension of unmanned aircraft systems from military to civil and public use applications has rapidly outpaced the safety analysis that is normally associated with the introduction of a new and novel aircraft. Insights into the types of anomalous events associated with accidents and incidents involving civil and public use unmanned aircraft systems operating in the National Airspace System were derived from an information synthesis of archival, publically available reports from the Aviation Safety Information and Analysis Sharing system. The vast majority of anomalous events were related to equipment failures, primarily lost link, distantly followed by a variety …

Quantifying Undisturbed Land In Minnesota's Prairie Coteau And Lac Qui Parle Valley Regions, Pete Bauman, Ben Carlson, Tanner Butler

Quantifying Undisturbed Lands in MInnesota's Prairie Coteau and Lac qui Parle Valley Regions

We employed simple GIS methods utilizing the Minnesota Farm Service Agency’s Common Land Unit (CLU) cropland data layer from 2013, along with 2013 USDA National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) county mosaic aerial imagery, to evaluate over 5 million acres of land in 14 southwest Minnesota counties, including all or portions of 10 counties within the Minnesota portion of the Prairie Coteau region and the entirety of four counties in the Lac qui Parle region. We utilized the CLU cropland layer to first identify and remove any areas with a cropping history, regardless of current land use. We then analyzed the …

Sharing Research Data And Intellectual Property Law: A Primer, Michael Carroll Aug 2015

Sharing Research Data And Intellectual Property Law: A Primer, Michael Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Sharing research data by depositing it in connection with a published article or otherwise making data publicly available sometimes raises intellectual property questions in the minds of depositing researchers, their employers, their funders, and other researchers who seek to reuse research data. In this context or in the drafting of data management plans, common questions are (1) what are the legal rights in data; (2) who has these rights; and (3) how does one with these rights use them to share data in a way that permits or encourages productive downstream uses? Leaving to the side privacy and national security …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia virus (VHSv) is an RNA rhabdovirus, which causes one of the world's most serious fish diseases, infecting >80 freshwater and marine species across the Northern Hemisphere. A new, novel, and especially virulent substrain—VHSv-IVb—first appeared in the Laurentian Great Lakes about a decade ago, resulting in massive fish kills. It rapidly spread and has genetically diversified. This study analyzes temporal and spatial mutational patterns of VHSv-IVb across the Great Lakes for the novel non-virion (Nv) gene that is unique to this group of novirhabdoviruses, in relation to its glycoprotein (G), phosphoprotein (P), …

Modeling The Antipodal Connectivity Structure Of Neural Communities, Bayazit Karaman Aug 2015

Modeling The Antipodal Connectivity Structure Of Neural Communities, Bayazit Karaman

Theses and Dissertations

Positive electrical charges in a solid conductor generate an outward electrical field emanating from the charged conductor. In this context, overall cognitive decisions, which were initiated by the electrical activities of neural modules at different parts of the cerebrum, are completed at the highest spatial and hierarchical level. EEG systems are capable of detecting these electrical activities, however, a unified mathematical model of these highest-level cognitive interactions has not yet been stated. Recent studies support the theory that brain is composed of modules and certain nodes establish connections between the modules. Within the scope of this study, the highest spatial …

Manipulation Of The Intracellular Redox Environment By Hsv-1, Brandon S. Albright Aug 2015

Manipulation Of The Intracellular Redox Environment By Hsv-1, Brandon S. Albright

Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis describes three separate but related projects exploring how herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) induces and copes with a pro-oxidant environment during infection. We found that the UL6 portal ring, the conduit responsible for the uptake and release of viral DNA, required disulfide bonds for ring formation and stability. Mutagenesis studies revealed that these disulfide bonds might be mediated by cysteines 166 and 254. We next examined the protein UL32 as a potential virally encoded oxidoreductase. UL32 contains three C-X-X-C motifs reminiscent of proteins that regulate disulfide bond formation. Mutation of two of these C-X-X-C motifs abrogated protein function. …

Preparation And Radioprotective Effects Of A Standardized Tocotrienol Containing Extract Isolated From Annatto Seeds (Bixa Orellana L.), Edith Nathalie Pineda Aug 2015

Preparation And Radioprotective Effects Of A Standardized Tocotrienol Containing Extract Isolated From Annatto Seeds (Bixa Orellana L.), Edith Nathalie Pineda

Theses and Dissertations

Currently there is no ideal radioprotective agent: one which does not show toxicity, offers long term protective effects, and is easy to administer. In this research we have developed a standardized extract of annatto, Bixa Orellana L, containing a total 60% of delta and gamma tocotrienol, in a 10:1 ratio. The extract was prepared via solvent extraction and chromatography. Radioprotective effects of the standardized extract against total body radiation were determined. Twenty-four hour before radiation CD2F1 mice received a subcutaneous injection of annatto extract a dose of 200 mg/Kg body weight. Experimental groups each received two different single radiation doses …

Direct Regularization From Co-Registered Anatomical Images For Mri-Guided Near-Infrared Spectral Tomographic Image Reconstruction, Limin Zhang, Yan Zhao, Shudong Jiang, Brian W. Pogue, Keith Paulsen Aug 2015

Direct Regularization From Co-Registered Anatomical Images For Mri-Guided Near-Infrared Spectral Tomographic Image Reconstruction, Limin Zhang, Yan Zhao, Shudong Jiang, Brian W. Pogue, Keith Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Combining anatomical information from high resolution imaging modalities to guide near-infrared spectral tomography (NIRST) is an efficient strategy for improving the quality of the reconstructed spectral images. A new approach for incorporating image information directly into the inversion matrix regularization was examined using Direct Regularization from Images (DRI), which encodes the gray-scale data into the NIRST image reconstruction problem. This process has the benefit of eliminating user intervention such as image segmentation of distinct regions. Specifically, the Dynamic Contrast Enhanced Magnetic Resonance (DCE-MR) image intensity value differences within the anatomical image were used to implement an exponentially-weighted regularization function between …

Top-Free Rights For Women: A Showdown In Manhattan, Joanna L. Grossman Aug 2015

Top-Free Rights For Women: A Showdown In Manhattan, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

A battle over whether topless women with body paint who call themselves “desnudas” can solicit tips in Times Square—and whether they might be soliciting them too aggressively—might raise real legal questions; it certainly raises political hackles. In a weak moment, Mayor DiBlasio even threatened to rip up the pedestrian plaza where they have stationed themselves rather than allow them to continue appearing.
