High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a key component of circulating blood and plays essential roles in regulation of vascular endothelial function and immunity. Clinical data demonstrate that HDL levels drop by 40-70% in septic patients, which is associated with a poor prognosis. Experimental studies using Apolipoprotein A-I (ApoAI) null mice showed that HDL deficient mice are susceptible to septic death, and overexpressing ApoAI in mice to increase HDL levels protects against septic death. These clinical and animal studies support our hypothesis that a decrease in HDL level is a risk factor for sepsis, and raising circulating HDL levels may provide an …

Parental care is widespread in Archosaurs (birds, crocodilians, dinosaurs and pterosaurs), and this group provides a useful model for the evolution of parent-offspring interactions. While offspring signalling has been well-studied in birds, the modulation of parental care in crocodilians remains an open question. Here we show that acoustic communication has a key role in the dynamics of crocodilian’ mother-offspring relationships. We found embedded information about the emitter’s size in juvenile calls of several species, and experimentally demonstrated that Nile crocodile mothers breeding in the wild are less receptive to the calls of larger juveniles. Using synthetized sounds, we further showed …

Dissolved Nutrient Distributions In The Gulf Of Mexico Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Ashley Ann Parks
Dissolved Nutrient Distributions In The Gulf Of Mexico Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Ashley Ann Parks
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) in the spring of 2010 introduced 4.4 million of barrels of oil to the ecosystem. Some biodegradation of the oil occurs when microorganisms, particularly bacteria, metabolize the oil as a carbon source. During this process, the microbes also require nutrients for energy. An introduction of oil at this magnitude has the ability to induce large blooms of microbes, which in turn can affect nutrient concentrations. Microbial petroleum degradation decreases nutrient concentrations, whereas the microbial assimilation and decay of organic matter increase nutrient concentrations. This study assessed whether any …

Pollen grains undergo dramatic changes in cellular water potential as they deliver the male germ line to female gametes, and it has been proposed that mechanosensitive ion channels may sense the resulting mechanical stress. Here, we identify and characterize MscS-like 8 (MSL8), a pollen-specific, membrane tension–gated ion channel required for pollen to survive the hypoosmotic shock of rehydration and for full male fertility. MSL8 negatively regulates pollen germination but is required for cellular integrity during germination and tube growth. MSL8 thus senses and responds to changes in membrane tension associated with pollen hydration and germination. These data further suggest that …

Light is often reported to enhance plant nitrate reductase (NR) activity; we have identified a context in which light strongly suppresses NR activity. In vitro NR activity measurements of laboratory-grown seedlings showed strong suppression of nitrate-induced NR activity in cotyledon, hypocotyl, and root tissues of Ipomoea hederacea (L.) Jacquin; robust NR activity accumulated in nitrate-induced tissues in the dark, but was absent or significantly reduced in tissues exposed to light during the incubation. The suppressive mechanism appears to act at a point after nitrate perception; tissues pre-incubated with nitrate in the light were potentiated and developed NR activity more rapidly …

In a previous study, we found a dose-dependent synergistic effect in recombinant yeast stably transfected with the human androgen receptor (AR), in response to co-exposure to testosterone and a commercially-available lubricant (engine) oil for cars. As there is relatively little knowledge on synergistic toxic effects and causative compounds, particularly for the androgenic system, the objective of the present study was to investigate this oil in more detail. The oil was fractionated into SARA fractions (so-called 'saturates', 'aromatics', 'resins', and 'asphaltenes') by open column chromatography. Surprisingly, when exposing the recombinant AR yeast to testosterone in combination with the separate SARA fractions, …

Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy And Offspring Birth Weight: A Genetically-Informed Approach Comparing Multiple Raters, Valerie S. Knopik, Kristine Marceau, Rohan H.C. Palmer, Taylor F. Smith, Andrew C. Heath
Psychology and Child Development
Maternal smoking during pregnancy (SDP) is a significant public health concern with adverse consequences to the health and well-being of the fetus. There is considerable debate about the best method of assessing SDP, including birth/medical records, timeline follow-back approaches, multiple reporters, and biological verification (e.g., cotinine). This is particularly salient for genetically-informed approaches where it is not always possible or practical to do a prospective study starting during the prenatal period when concurrent biological specimen samples can be collected with ease. In a sample of families (N = 173) specifically selected for sibling pairs discordant for prenatal smoking exposure, we: …
Defining Adolescence, Alexa C. Curtis
Defining Adolescence, Alexa C. Curtis
Journal of Adolescent and Family Health
Chronologic definitions of adolescence and adolescent sub-stages vary throughout the literature. Definitions for adolescence are important because they inform the construction and implementation of adolescent research and program development. This article identifies commonly used chronologic parameters for adolescence, explores the developmental theory contributing to the understanding of adolescent chronology and posits a developmentally consistent definition of this critical transitional phase as: “early adolescence” 11-13 years, “adolescence” 14-17 years, and “young adulthood” 18-25 years. Keywords: adolescent, development, chronologic definitions, research

Context The urban heat island (UHI) is a welldocumented pattern of warming in cities relative to rural areas. Most UHI research utilizes remote sensing methods at large scales, or climate sensors in single cities surrounded by standardized land cover. Relatively few studies have explored continental-scale climatic patterns within common urban microenvironments such as residential landscapes that may affect human comfort.
Objectives We tested the urban homogenization hypothesis which states that structure and function in cities exhibit ecological ‘‘sameness’’ across diverse regions relative to the native ecosystems they replaced.
Methods We deployed portable micrometeorological sensors to compare air temperature and humidity …

Scabies, caused by the mite S. scabiei that burrows in the skin of humans, is a contagious skin disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It is a significant public health burden in economically disadvantaged populations, and outbreaks are common in nursing homes, daycare facilities, schools and workplaces in developed countries. It causes significant morbidity, and in chronic cases, associated bacterial infections can lead to renal and cardiac diseases. Scabies is very difficult to diagnose by the usual skin scrape test, and a presumptive diagnosis is often made based on clinical signs such as rash and itch that can …

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a sensitive analytical technique with great promise for biological applications, especially when combined with microfluidics. Here, we report the first integration of ECL with digital microfluidics (DMF). ECL detectors were fabricated into the ITO-coated top plates of DMF devices, allowing for the generation of light from electrically excited luminophores in sample droplets. The new system was characterized by making electrochemical and ECL measurements of soluble mixtures of tris(phenanthroline)ruthenium(II) and tripropylamine (TPA) solutions. The system was then validated by application to an oligonucleotide hybridization assay, using magnetic particles bearing 21-mer, deoxyribose analogues of the complement to microRNA-143 (miRNA-143). …

The Social Construction Of Medicalization Of Pregnancy And Childbirth, Mirko Prosen
Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports
Pregnancy and childbirth in every society reflect societal values. During the last century (in Slovenia after World War II), medicine, medical interventions, and medical technology became indispensable elements of societal control over these otherwise natural phenomena. Based on Conrad and Schneiders' sequential model of medicalization, we can confirm that in Slovenia both pregnancy and childbirth are medicalized. This raises three questions that need to be answered: how do women experience and accept medicalization through their own pregnancy and birth experiences and what is their relationship towards natural childbirth; how do medical staff working in obstetrics clinics perceive and experience the …

Staphylococcus aureus infections are a common cause of disease, particularly in colonized people. They frequently cause staph infections and are often dubbed “Super Staph” because they are virulent and multidrug resistant. Recently, a series of published articles have reported that community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA) strains are evolving and becoming more prevalent in households. In contrast, health care acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA) is declining in the United States. The changing “Superbugs” have often been used as an example of “evolution in action.” Although MRSA infections have become more prevalent in the community, studies of college students carrying S. aureus and MRSA …
