Saving The Paper Tiger: Biodiversity As An Irreplaceable Element Of Our Common Cultural Heritage, Lisa Meissner Jan 2015

Saving The Paper Tiger: Biodiversity As An Irreplaceable Element Of Our Common Cultural Heritage, Lisa Meissner

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

This Note examines the role of international law and human rights in the conservation of global biodiversity as an element of our shared cultural heritage. International instruments like the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and the World Heritage Convention have changed the discourse of international conservation law by connecting natural resources, including animal species, to incentives-based structures in local or regional communities. Such a legal foundation is critical to engaging with evolving international concepts of sustainable development and rural livelihoods protection that promote making biodiversity conservation cognizably valuable to humanity, both tangibly …

Nitrogen Management Of Forages In Relation To Gaseous Emissions – New Approaches And Considerations, Shabtai Bittman, Derek Hunt Jan 2015

Nitrogen Management Of Forages In Relation To Gaseous Emissions – New Approaches And Considerations, Shabtai Bittman, Derek Hunt

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Forages have a high N demand, a long growing season, and an effective root system all contributing to effective nutrient capture. However forages are restrictive in methods available for mitigating gaseous losses both as NH3 and as N2O, due to both practical and cost considerations. Strategies are needed to address the challenges of both N efficiency and N losses. Agronomic techniques in long term experiments can enhance estimates of N loss pathways and N efficiency, and demonstrate the importance of integrated multinutrient approaches. The dual manure stream concept divides manure into a thin fraction suitable as an …

Impact Of Market Forces On Product Quality And Grassland Condition, David L. Michalk, Jianping Wu, Warwick B. Badgery, David R. Kemp Jan 2015

Impact Of Market Forces On Product Quality And Grassland Condition, David L. Michalk, Jianping Wu, Warwick B. Badgery, David R. Kemp

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Meeting demands for livestock products which are predicted to more than double during the next 20 years, is central to the challenge of feeding the world sustainably. Smallholders will play a key role in achieving global security in animal protein. However, this requires a shift from subsistence to market-oriented farming where production efficiency not the number of livestock is the key focus with the aim of producing ‘more from less’. For grassland-based ruminant production, reducing stocking rate from current unsustainable levels under subsistence management is an essential first step to producing more production and profit from fewer animals. This is …

Stakeholders Integration For Sustainable Use Of Temperate Forage/Livestock Agriculture, Garry D. Lacefield, Don Ball Jan 2015

Stakeholders Integration For Sustainable Use Of Temperate Forage/Livestock Agriculture, Garry D. Lacefield, Don Ball

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Forage/livestock production is complex, and best management options are often site-specific, but some concepts have broad application. The intent of this article is to provide an overview of research-based management approaches that the authors believe are necessary to ensure the sustainability of forage/livestock farms. This overview discussion is needed because livestock agriculture is changing, thus creating both challenges and opportunities for producers. In the last 30 years, beef numbers in the USA have declined by 20%, but production per cow has more than doubled, resulting in increased total production on less land with fewer animals. Similar statistics exist for the …

Socio-Cultural Factors Challenging Development Interventions In Cattle Production In The Remote Areas Of Vietnam, Duong-Nam Ha, Pham-Van Hung, Tran-The Cuong, Ninh-Xuan Trung, Tran-Van Long, Laurie Bonney, Peter A. Lane, Guillaume Duteurtre, Stephen Ives Jan 2015

Socio-Cultural Factors Challenging Development Interventions In Cattle Production In The Remote Areas Of Vietnam, Duong-Nam Ha, Pham-Van Hung, Tran-The Cuong, Ninh-Xuan Trung, Tran-Van Long, Laurie Bonney, Peter A. Lane, Guillaume Duteurtre, Stephen Ives

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The northwest highlands of Vietnam are characterized by high altitude, low infrastructure, and low population densities composed of a wide diversity of different ethnic groups. Their socio-cultural characteristics strongly influence their lifestyle and production systems, including agricultural activities. The majority of these people have suffered from slow economic development, with the highest poverty rate in the country. This is a real need for plausible interventions where behavioral changes of smallholders throughout local value chains would be a critical foundation. Our project implemented in this context of development in the Northwest highlands of Vietnam aims to understand the role of socio-cultural …

Changing Grassland Scenario In Developing Countries--Economical And Social Perspective, Abule Ebro Jan 2015

Changing Grassland Scenario In Developing Countries--Economical And Social Perspective, Abule Ebro

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Grasslands are mainly used for livestock production in developing countries although they have been facing contradictory pressures, i.e., increased demand for natural resources and animal products to cope with rising human populations. On the other, there is a need to preserve the environment and ecosystem. This paper reviewed the causes of grassland changes, the economic and social perspective of changing grasslands with more emphasis on dry lands. Different indicators were used to assess the economic (livestock production, wildlife and tourism, crop production, ecosystem services) and social (traditional institutions, mobility, land tenure and grazing systems) perspectives of changing grassland. The major …

Conservation Of Grassland Plant Genetic Resources Through People Participation, D. R. Malaviya, Ajoy K. Roy, P. Kaushal

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Agrobiodiversity provides the foundation of all food and feed production. Hence, need of the time is to collect, evaluate and utilize the biodiversity globally available. Indian sub-continent is one of the world’s mega centers of crop origins. India possesses 166 species of agri-horticultural crops and 324 species of wild relatives. India is reported to have five grass covers identified. There have been almost nil human interference in terms of selection pressure; hence, the biodiversity is well conserved in these grazing lands. There is need of a system approach to understanding biodiversity that moves significantly beyond taxonomy and species observations. In …

Breeding Strategies To Improve Fodder Legumes With Special Emphasis On Clover And Medics, Ajoy K. Roy, D. R. Malaviya, P. Kaushal

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In India, Forage has a unique integration of agriculture and animal industry in diversified rich cultural environment. Greater part of rural economy in India relies much upon mixed farming system, a well-knit combination of crop production and livestock rearing. In India, grazing-based livestock husbandry plays an important role in the rural economy as around 50% of animals depend on grazing. Pasturelands over an area of 12 Mha constitute the main grazing resources that are available. Nearly 30 pastoral communities in hilly or arid/semi-arid regions in northern and western parts of India, depend on grazing-based livestock production. Nomadic pastoralism, a traditional …

Cooking Class: The Rise Of The ‘Foodie’ And The Role Of Mass Media., Kathleen Collins Jan 2015

Cooking Class: The Rise Of The ‘Foodie’ And The Role Of Mass Media., Kathleen Collins

Publications and Research

I frame this chapter by asking three questions. First, is it new? One way to problematize this subject for readers is to challenge the notion that “foodie-ism” is a late 20th century phenomenon. I think it is a common misperception that this is a new development/trend/interest/hobby, and while it is certainly arguable that it has reached new heights and gone mainstream in unprecedented ways, foodie-ism (but must find a more timeless word for it for discussion!) has really ebbed and flowed in varying waves over the 20th century (and earlier) and therefore is not entirely new. Food and cooking have …

An Exploration Of Burnout In Individuals With Type D Personality, Carla A. Kelly Jan 2015

An Exploration Of Burnout In Individuals With Type D Personality, Carla A. Kelly

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There are numerous physical and mental health implications associated with burnout and Type D personality (TDP). TDP is defined by the presence of specific levels of both negative affectivity and social inhibition. The purpose of this research was to examine the severity and prevalence of burnout in working adults with TDP in comparison to those without TDP. Social cognitive theory was the theoretical foundation for this study. Online surveys were used to gather responses to the Type D Scale-14 (DS14), the standard for measure for assessing TDP, and the Burnout Measure, Short Version (BMS) from 333 participants. Quantitative analyses included …

The Disparity Of Racial Diversity In Counselor Education And Supervision, Sharon Hammett Webb Jan 2015

The Disparity Of Racial Diversity In Counselor Education And Supervision, Sharon Hammett Webb

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In general, doctoral programs in counselor education and supervision (CES) have low minority enrollments. Faculty members in clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) master's degree in science (MS) programs primarily come from CES doctoral programs; therefore, faculty members do not generally reflect the diversity of the MS student population. Using the theory of planned behavior and the bioecological model, the purpose of this research was to determine the extent to which age, gender, faculty support, income, level of parents' or primary caregivers' education, and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accreditation status predict White and racial …

A Revision Of The Bee Genus Ptiloglossa Smith (Hymenoptera: Colletidae: Diphaglossinae), Rita Isabel Velez-Ruiz Jan 2015

A Revision Of The Bee Genus Ptiloglossa Smith (Hymenoptera: Colletidae: Diphaglossinae), Rita Isabel Velez-Ruiz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Among bees of the tribe Caupolicanini, those in the genus Ptiloglossa are the most taxonomically diverse. The genus is inadequately defined, and the known species are poorly understood taxonomically. Many species are known only as males or females, and are relatively uncommon in museum collections. This project explored the diversity of the bee genus Ptiloglossa Smith through a comprehensive morphological study, attempting to provide a basis for a more complete taxonomic revision of its species and proposing an hypothesis of their phylogenetic relationships. Results of this study include one new species from Colombia: P. colombiana n. sp. Ptiloglossa wilmattae Cockerell, …

Temperature Dependence Of Shear Speed In Micellar Fluid, E.G. Sunethra Kumari Dayavansha Jan 2015

Temperature Dependence Of Shear Speed In Micellar Fluid, E.G. Sunethra Kumari Dayavansha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wormlike micellar (WM) fluids are viscoelastic and can support shear waves. Phase transitions of the micellar aggregates are temperature dependent and can manifest as sharp changes in the shear wave speed as a function of temperature. Thus, shear waves provide a good tool for detecting the existence of phase transitions. In this work, the variation of shear speed with temperature of 200mM CTAB/NaSal micellar fluid in a 5:3 ratio was studied. The dependence of shear wave speed on time between fluid synthesis and measurement was also investigated. Shear wave propagation through the fluid was observed as a time varying birefringence …

A Phenomenography Of Mississippi African American High School Students' Progress In English Language Arts (Ela), Ebonee Nicole Williams Jan 2015

A Phenomenography Of Mississippi African American High School Students' Progress In English Language Arts (Ela), Ebonee Nicole Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasing academic achievement among African Americans has become increasingly challenging for several educators. To receive aid in their pedagogical efforts, many of these teachers read qualitative literature and often discover success stories told by teachers and/or administrators. Qualitative research rarely includes African American students who share their own journey of academic achievement. To offer different insight that will specifically help high school educators increase ELA achievement among students of color, this qualitative study employed a phenomenographic approach to uncover how African American students in a Mississippi public high school perceived their experiences of meeting growth in English Language Arts (ELA). …

Pathogen Indicator Monitoring In The Ross Barnett Reservoir, Hannie Quay Parker Capps Jan 2015

Pathogen Indicator Monitoring In The Ross Barnett Reservoir, Hannie Quay Parker Capps

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Man-made reservoirs are often used for both water supply and recreation. The Ross Barnett Reservoir in central Mississippi, a 33,000-acre man-made lake, provides drinking water to the city of Jackson, MS, and forty-eight surrounding communities. Further, an estimated 2.5 million people visit the Reservoir each year for recreational purposes, including boating, fishing, water-skiing, and swimming. Protecting the water quality in the Reservoir is important for these visitors and inhabitants along the shoreline, and for these reasons, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected it as a Priority Watershed in Mississippi. Presently, there is a concern regarding recent data collected that …

The Effects Of Departmentalized And Self-Contained Structures On Student Achievement, Carrie Renee Skelton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated the effects of departmentalized and self-contained classroom structures on student achievement of fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students in Mississippi schools. Historical MCT2 proficiency level percentages were collected from the Mississippi Department of Education website for the following school years: 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and 2012-2013. This data was used to calculate a revised Quality of Distribution Index (QDI-R) for each school included in the study. Using the QDI-R, differences were generated between school year (SY) 2009-2010 and SY 2010-2011; between SY 2010-2011 and SY 2011-2012; and between SY 2011-2012 and SY 2012-2013. This yielded three data …

Principal Preparation Effectiveness: A Program Evaluation Of The University Of Mississippi's Principal Preparation Programs, Summer Pannell Jan 2015

Principal Preparation Effectiveness: A Program Evaluation Of The University Of Mississippi's Principal Preparation Programs, Summer Pannell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the creation of the principal's position, the role of principal has evolved from building manager and disciplinarian to a multi-faceted role responsible for strategic planning, managing funds, ensuring legislative compliance, implementing reforms, and increasing student achievement. Past research contends principal leadership may be the second most influential factor in student achievement, surpassed only by the effect of the classroom teacher (Marzano, Waters, & McNulty, 2005; Joyce & Showers, 2002). The role of the university Principal Preparation Program (PPP) is to equip participants with effective leadership practices to face the demands of school leadership roles (Duncan et al., 2011; Hernandez …

Localization Of Sensors In Presence Of Fading And Mobility, Hamzeh Hussain Omari Jan 2015

Localization Of Sensors In Presence Of Fading And Mobility, Hamzeh Hussain Omari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to estimate the location of a sensor through analysis of signal strengths of messages received from a collection of mobile anchors. In particular, a sensor node determines its location from distance measurements to mobile anchors of known locations. We take into account the uncertainty and fluctuation of the RSS as a result of fading and take into account the decay of the RSS which is proportional to the transmitter-receiver distance power raised to the PLE. The objective is to characterize the channel in order to derive accurate distance estimates from RSS measurements and then …

Kierkegaard And Byron: Disability, Irony, And The Undead, Troy Wellington Smith Jan 2015

Kierkegaard And Byron: Disability, Irony, And The Undead, Troy Wellington Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

After enumerating the implicit and explicit references to Lord Byron in the corpus of Søren Kierkegaard, chapter 1, "Kierkegaard and Byron," provides a historical backdrop by surveying the influence of Byron and Byronism on the literary circles of Golden Age Copenhagen. Chapter 2, "Disability," theorizes that Kierkegaard later spurned Byron as a hedonistic "cripple" because of the metonymy between him and his (i.e., Kierkegaard's) enemy Peder Ludvig Møller. Møller was an editor at The Corsair, the disreputable satirical newspaper that mocked Kierkegaard's disability in a series of caricatures. As a poet, critic, and eroticist, Møller was eminently Byronic, and both …

Exploring The Use Of Criminal Background Checks In Higher Education: Perceptions Of Leaders At Four Institutions Of Higher Education In Mississippi, Tiffany Edwards

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Criminal background checks as a requisite for employment is not a new idea, specifically when recruiting for security sensitive job positions. In recent years, this practice has become increasingly widespread within the workforce, not only with businesses, but also with institutions of higher education. Four institutions of higher education within the state of Mississippi were randomly selected for this qualitative, phenomenological study. The researcher sought an answer to the following question: how has the use of criminal background checks transformed the nature of recruitment and hiring on university campuses? To answer this question, the researcher explored historical practices at each …

Acousto-Electric Impedance Of Ferroelectric Phononic Superlattice, Ola Hassan Nusierat Jan 2015

Acousto-Electric Impedance Of Ferroelectric Phononic Superlattice, Ola Hassan Nusierat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Acousto-Electric Impedance z of a Ferroelectric Phononic Superlattice (fps) is investigated. The analytical derivation of z and its phase reveal that both are functions of physical parameters such as the electromechanical coupling coefficient, the mechanical quality factor, the domain length and the phase velocity of the plate acoustic waves (paw). Mathematical code is produced that allows for modeling z in a two dimensional fps. It is observed that z depends on the number of domains in the fps structure. Fewer domains in the structure might minimize z or make it approach zero at certain conditions. A series of experiments …
