The Association Between Selected Lower Extremity Kinematic Variables And Fastpitch Softball Speed - A Preliminary Study, Savannah Wahl, Melissa Mache, Chengtu Hsieh
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This preliminary study aimed to examine the association between selected lower extremity kinematic variables and pitch speed in fastpitch softball. The kinematic variables were chosen for their practical applicability, allowing coaches and athletes to assess and enhance performance using accessible tools. Five collegiate female softball pitchers volunteered for the study. Using the OpenCap system, five strike pitches from each participant were analysed. Due to the small sample size, Spearman’s rho analysis was employed. Results indicated significant associations between ball speed and normalised stride length (rs = –0.46, p = .022), and ball speed and normalised stride width ( …

Energy Flow Analysis During Maximal Speed Sprint Running, Shayne Vial, Kyle Wasseberger, Daniel Kadlec
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to determine how mechanical energy is transferred, generated, and absorbed during maximal speed sprint running in semi-elite football players. To perform the segmental power analysis, we collected 3-D kinematics and ground reaction force data during maximum speed sprinting. During late swing, the thigh, shank, and foot showed net energy outflow (negative), indicating energy transfer to the pelvis/trunk or dissipated. During the first half of stance the hip was the prime generator while the knee and ankle absorbed energy. In the second half of stance, the hip transitioned to absorbing energy while the knee and …

The Large Volume And Three-Dimensional Shape Of The Flexor Hallucis Longus Muscle In Sprinters And Distance Runners, Annamaria Peter, Andras Hegyi, István Kóbor, Gyula Gyebnár, Bálint Kovács
ISBS Proceedings Archive
We investigated the anatomical characteristics of flexor hallucis longus (FHL) in high-level sprinters and distance runners. We recruited 14 sprinters, and 15 distance runners. The lower leg was scanned using magnetic resonance imaging. All scans were segmented then FHL’s 3-D shape was compared between groups using statistical shape modelling. In addition, we quantified muscle volume and mass, largest anatomical cross-sectional area, muscle length. Considering muscle volume, largest anatomical cross-sectional area and muscle length, we found no significant differences between sprinters and distance runners, and the shape of the muscle was also similar between groups. When compared to studies on non-runners …

Prediction Of Anterio-Posterior And Medio-Lateral Force From Vertical Force In Different Frequency Of Movement Pattern, Rajinikumar Palaniyappan Dr., Hema D Ms., Tamil Selvan P Mr.
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Ground reaction forces (GRFs) are essential in human motion analysis for understanding biomechanics in sports and rehabilitation. While vertical GRFs (VGRFs) are commonly studied due to ease of measurement, their relationship with horizontal forces (anteroposterior and mediolateral) across different movement speeds remains unclear. This study aimed to predict horizontal forces from VGRFs during walking, jogging, running, and sprinting. The three Kistler force plates and the force data were collected from 60 male intercollegiate athletes (ages 18 - 25) over a 30-meter path. Pearson correlation and linear regression revealed significant correlations between VGRF and both braking and propulsive forces (y-axis), as …

Joint Power Differences In Speed Running Between American Style Football Position Groups, Monique Mokha, Alyana Andal Andal, Jacob Haberer, Isabella Estrada Hernandez, Hunter Forte
ISBS Proceedings Archive
We tested lower limb joint power during a treadmill run of 54 American style football players preparing for league try-outs where 40-yard (36.6 m) dash performance is critical. Players represented 3 position groups: Big (e.g., linemen), Big skill (e.g., tight ends), and Skill (e.g., receivers) groups, reflecting their varying play demands, from blocking/tackling to sprinting/cutting. MANOVA showed significant group differences in joint power, F(24,80) = 2.917, p < .001; Wilk’s λ = .285, partial η² = .467. ANOVA and post-hocs revealed Skill players generated more total limb power than Big (p < .001) and absorbed more ankle power than Big (p < .001), but not Big skill (p > .017). Big absorbed more right hip power than …

Formation Of Coordination Among Release Parameters For The Shape Of Variability In Arrival Positions Over Practice, Ryota Matsuda, Jun Umakoshi, Arata Kimura
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study aims to propose a framework for analyzing coordination among release parameters in relation to the shape of variability in performance outcomes and to investigate how such coordination is formed through practice. Participants threw 60 darts toward the center of the dartboard, twice a week for 10 weeks. Intersection over Union (IoU) was used to quantify coordination for the shape of variability, and a threshold was established to define the presence of coordination. The results showed that coordination among release parameters was not necessarily developed through practice, and that such coordination may already be structured before reducing the magnitude …

ISBS Proceedings Archive
Although judo carries a high risk of head injuries, primarily due to throws, empirical data on head impact characteristics during sparring practice remains limited. This study examined differences between males and females in head impact frequency and magnitude among collegiate judo practitioners. Nine athletes were monitored using mouthguard-type inertial sensors to measure head linear and rotational accelerations during practice. Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) estimated that head impact frequency was higher in female practitioners (10.9 impacts/hour; 95% CI: 4.8–25.0) compared to males (3.7 impacts/hour; 95% CI: 1.4–9.5; rate ratio: 2.96, p = 0.09). In contrast, model-estimated peak linear acceleration (PLA) …

Characterizing Cardiac-Locomotion Synchronization And Heart Rate/Gait Cycle Fluctuations: A Pilot Study, Minato Kawaguchi, Kousuke Meguro, Kentaro Takahashi
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study investigated cardiac-locomotion synchronization (CLS) during indoor treadmill and outdoor free walking, examining its environmental differences and relationships with heart rate/gait rhythm variability. Twelve participants used wearable ECG and accelerometer sensors for data collection during self-paced brisk walking. We analysed the last 10 minutes of stable walking, calculating mean period, coefficient of variation, and detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) slope α. CLS was quantified by the 'Sync rate', the temporal proportion of consistent gait cycle to R-R interval ratios. Results showed significantly higher Sync rates in outdoor walking. Outdoor gait rhythm fluctuation α tended to decrease with increased Sync rate. …

Simulating The Effect Of Measurement Error On Stride Time Detrended Fluctuation Analysis, Ben D. M. Jones, David L. Carey, Jon Wheat, Kane Middleton, Ben Heller
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aim of this study was to investigate the sensitivity of running stride time detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) to simulated noise and the impact of noise on reliability measures. Varying magnitudes of Gaussian and uniform noise were added to series of touchdown event timings from 11 runners. DFA-α were calculated for ground truth and simulated stride time series. Simulated series were paired and test-retest ICC estimates computed. The error in DFA-α increased with noise magnitude, with stride time series transitioning from persistent to anti-persistent behaviour for greater magnitudes of noise. However, median ICC estimates stayed above 0.95 for all standard …

Effect Of Medicine Ball Mass On Trunk Internal Rotation Kinetics During Punch Throw Exercise In Collegiate Baseball Pitchers: A Pilot Study, Shinji Ishikawa, Mizuki Kitamura, Mitsuo Otsuka
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this pilot study was to clarify the effect of different medicine ball loads on the trunk longitudinal rotational kinetics during the punch throw exercise. Three male right-handed players from a university baseball club participated in this study. The mass of medicine ball used in the experiment trial was set to 1 kg, 3 kg, and 5 kg, which are commonly used in general training. It was found that the peak positive trunk rotation power was higher in the heavier trials and this was not caused by the larger negative trunk internal power. Oppositely, the peak horizontal medicine …

Plantar Fascia Stiffness Accounts For Individual Variance In Its Strain During Hopping At Different Frequencies In Females, Ayaka Hobo, Hiroto Shiotani, Kosuke Hirata, Hiyo Inaba, Natsuki Sado
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The plantar fascia (PF) behaves like a spring during bouncing gait, whereas its strain is a potential risk factor for plantar fasciitis. PF strain in bouncing gait is determined theoretically by complex foot dynamics, involving numerous active and passive foot structures, but the determinants of its individual variability remain unclear. Here we show the high relevance of PF stiffness to its strain in hopping by 11 females. PF stiffness, assessed as shear wave velocity, correlates with peak PF strain in hopping at different frequencies (1.8, 2.6, 3.4 Hz). The variance accounted for increases with increasing hopping frequency (from 49 to …

ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to examine the intermuscular distribution of hamstring muscle volume, muscle excitation, and torque production capacity of hip extensors in power-trained (sprint-based) athletes compared to a strength-trained control group. We found higher semitendinosus volume in the power-trained group. The electromyography activity increased with increasing contraction velocity only in the power-trained group, with significant between-group differences observed in the semitendinosus and biceps femoris at high velocity hip extension. Power-trained athletes were stronger during concentric contractions, particularly at high contraction velocities. These results explain possible morphological and neuromuscular mechanisms to increase propulsive force in high-speed running, which …

Interaction Between The Midsole And Plate In Running Shoes Modifies The Energy Strategy Of The Mtp Joint During Running, Soo-Ji Han, Jusung Lee, Sanghyuk Han, Seongjun Kim, Jongchul Park
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study investigated biomechanical differences of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint according to midsole materials (EVA, PEBA) and carbon plate insertion. Ten male runners performed overground running at 3.89 m/s (±5%) under four footwear conditions. Discrete outcome variables included active and critical stiffness (Kactive, Kcr), push-off time, peak propulsion force, and MTP power transition timing, while statistical nonparametric mapping (SnPM) was applied to joint power. PEBA without a plate did not provide a propulsion advantage but reduced energy loss and enabled more effective joint control than EVA. In contrast, the addition of a plate to EVA facilitated a faster roll-off with …

Bridging The Gap Between Research And Practice: Integrating Biomechanical Analysis In The Development Of Landing Mats In Gymnastics., Pavel Brtva, Bethany Canty, Rebecca Straker, Gareth Irwin, Roman Farana
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study examined variations in vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) and lower limb kinematics during landings on three different mat structures (TYPE1, TYPE2, TYPE3) compared to FIG mat in young unskilled (pupils) and gymnast’s female. Significant effects of mat type were observed for VGRFmax, time to VGRFmax, peak ankle and knee angles, and peak knee angular velocity. TYPE1 mats exhibited the highest VGRF and shortest time to peak, indicating inadequate force attenuation and potential injury risk. Gymnasts demonstrated lower VGRFmax and lower ankle flexion, likely due to landing technique. No significant differences between TYPE2, TYPE3, …

ISBS Proceedings Archive
The current tendency to shorten hospital stays requires patients to do rehabilitation exercises independently at home after knee and hip replacement surgeries. To help address the lack of supervision, we are developing a digital system that uses Human Pose Estimation (HPE) to analyse patient motion and provide feedback. In this work, we focus on two system aspects: (1) A tablet-based mobile application with an elderly-friendly interface and (2) a quantitative comparison of a widely used real-time HPE algorithm (MoveNet) with one of the top performers on the COCO benchmark (ViTPose). We provide experimental results for two-dimensional (2D) HPE on public …

Fencing requires proper protective attire that ensures safety and allows for unrestricted movement by balancing flexibility, durability, and puncture resistance. This study investigates the potential of electrospun nanofiber composites, composed of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and enhanced with reduced graphene oxide (rGO), as a sustainable alternative to traditional fencing suit materials. Characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and dielectric spectroscopy confirmed the uniform incorporation of rGO within the porous nanofiber structure, which enhances the distribution of mechanical loads and energy absorption. The dielectric characteristics of the composite suggest its suitability for applications in adaptive stiffness …

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Benign violation theory of humor has stood for years as a reliable explanation of what makes things funny. Nonetheless, some researchers emphasized the importance of context in various cultures. This research employs the benign violation framework to dissect the antecedents of amusement in violations that occurred in Indonesia's memetic internet content. Study 1 (N = 40) compared the effect of comedic video (vs. neutral video) on participants' perception of the degree of amusement and violation of the videos presented. The result showed that comedic video was perceived as having a higher level of violations, and the degree of amusement was …
