Cannabinoid Modulation Of Cisplatin Induced Neuropathy, Hannah Marie Harris
Cannabinoid Modulation Of Cisplatin Induced Neuropathy, Hannah Marie Harris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Endocannabinoid modulation of cancer-related pain is well-documented. Sativex, a cannabinoid extract with a 1:1 ratio of tetrahydrocannabinol (thc) and cannabidiol (cbd) has been shown to alleviate neuropathic pain associated with chemotherapy. This research examined whether thc or cbd alone is effective in attenuating or preventing tactile allodynia associated with cisplatin-administration. Mice (c57bl/6) were given eight doses of 2.3 mg/kg cisplatin or saline solution ip every second day to induce tactile allodynia (ringers on alternate days). Tactile responses to hind-paws were quantified in g of force using an electric von frey (evf) prior to (baseline) and after the cisplatin administration protocol. …
An Evaluation Of Geophysical Methods In The Detection Of Toddler-Sized Burials During The First Six Months Of Burials, Paul Sullivan Martin
An Evaluation Of Geophysical Methods In The Detection Of Toddler-Sized Burials During The First Six Months Of Burials, Paul Sullivan Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Geophysical survey has become a major tool in the search for clandestine graves associated with missing person cases. However, relatively little research has been done to evaluate the efficacy of different instruments. Ground-penetrating Radar (GPR), magnetometry, resistivity, conductivity, and susceptibility survey data were collected over the first six months of interment at approximately 30-day intervals for two research plots: an open grassy area and a wooded area. Each area contained five pig burials representing toddler-size (less than 50 pounds) remains and two areas of disturbance or false burials to serve as control graves. The resultant imagery was evaluated in terms …
Griswold's Criminal Law, Melissa Murray
Griswold's Criminal Law, Melissa Murray
Faculty Articles
This Symposium commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut. In the fifty years since it was announced, Griswold’s logic has underwritten a broader commitment to reproductive rights—one that has expanded the right to contraception and secured a woman’s right to choose an abortion. Amidst these developments it is easy to overlook another aspect of Griswold’s history. Griswold also was part of a criminal law reform effort that sought to reimagine the state’s authority in the intimate lives of citizens and limit the use of criminal law as a means of enforcing moral conformity. In this regard, Griswold shares roots …

From Incentive To Commodity To Asset: How International Law Is Reconceptualizing Intellectual Property, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss, Susy Frankel
Faculty Articles
In this paper, we examine the effects of the shift from quantitative to a qualitative solidification of the IP landscape. In the first two sections, we choose examples from these rather extensive agreements to demonstrate how the evolution of international lawmaking, which may well have started as a purposive response by post-industrial economies, is all too rapidly eclipsing incentive rationales for intellectual property protection. Using recent controversies over the working requirement and tobacco packaging, we next look at how commodification and assetization alter the debate over protecting creative output and to the loss of flexibility and diminished public access. While …

Flagellar Kinematics And Swimming Of Algal Cells In Viscoelastic Fluids, B. Qin, A. Gopinath, J. Yang, Jerry P. Gollub
Physics Faculty Scholarship
The motility of microorganisms is influenced greatly by their hydrodynamic interactions with the fluidic environment they inhabit. We show by direct experimental observation of the bi-flagellated alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii that fluid elasticity and viscosity strongly influence the beating pattern - the gait - and thereby control the propulsion speed. The beating frequency and the wave speed characterizing the cyclical bending are both enhanced by fluid elasticity. Despite these enhancements, the net swimming speed of the alga is hindered for fluids that are sufficiently elastic. The origin of this complex response lies in the interplay between the elasticity-induced changes in the …

Their responses were in line with the current body of literature reflecting …
'Furor' As Failed 'Pietas': Roman Poetic Constructions Of Madness Through The Time Of Virgil, Emily A. Mcdermott
'Furor' As Failed 'Pietas': Roman Poetic Constructions Of Madness Through The Time Of Virgil, Emily A. Mcdermott
Classics & Religious Studies Faculty Publication Series
Roman poetic portrayals of mad characters through the time of Virgil construct a fundamental opposition between madness, an ipso facto self-absorbed or egoistic condition, and sanity, which duly fixes its gaze outside of itself, on parents, forebears, and the walls of state. The poets conceptualize furor less as what a modern sensibility would label insanity or mental illness than as a passion-fueled state antithetical to social order, able to be held in check only by rigorous adherence to the duty-oriented cultural code of pietas. In this moralized conception of madness, erotic furor is not a metaphorical by-path but a …

It is a matter of time before the next widespread pandemic or natural disaster hits the United States (U.S.). The international response to the 2009 H1N1 influenza stands as a cautionary tale about how prepared the world is for such an emergency. Although the pandemic fortunately proved to be less severe than initially anticipated, it nevertheless resulted in shortages of medical equipment, overburdened hospitals, and preventable patient deaths, particularly among young people.
A pandemic will inevitably lead to difficult decisions about the allocation of medical resources, such as who will have priority access to ventilators and critical care beds when …
Synchrophasor Assisted Efficient Fault Location Techniques In An Active Distribution Network, Anil Khanal
Synchrophasor Assisted Efficient Fault Location Techniques In An Active Distribution Network, Anil Khanal
Dissertations
Reliability of an electrical system can be improved by an efficient fault location identification for the fast repair and remedial actions. This scenario changes when there are large penetrations of distributed generation (DG) which makes the distribution system an active distribution system. An efficient use of synchrophasors in the distribution network is studied with bidirectional power flow, harmonics and low angle difference consideration which are not prevalent in a transmission network. A synchrophasor estimation algorithm for the P class PMU is developed and applied to identify efficient fault location. A fault location technique using two ended synchronized measurement is derived …
Military Millennials As Next Generation Leaders: Do Leadership Traits Matter?, Phillip Michael Green
Military Millennials As Next Generation Leaders: Do Leadership Traits Matter?, Phillip Michael Green
Dissertations
Employers are constantly evaluating individuals to fill leadership roles within their organizations to extract the highest return from their resources and investments. Millennials, born between 1982 and 2000 (Howe and Strauss, 2000), represent the youngest and newest generation entering the workforce. A sub-population of this generation consists of military veterans returning to the United States after the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This quantitative study examines the leadership traits of the military Millennials that have transitioned to civilian life and compares this population segment with Millennials without a military background. To compare the two groups of the generational cohort, a …

Crisis And Trigger Warnings: Reflections On Legal Education And The Social Value Of The Law, 90 Chi.-Kent L. Rev. 615 (2015), Kim D. Chanbonpin
UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship
This Essay begins by understanding the law school crisis through the framework of disaster capitalism. This framing uncovers the ways in which reformers are taking advantage of the current crisis to restructure legal education. Under the circumstances, faculty may reasonably read the contemporaneous student-led movement to require trigger warnings in the classroom as an assault on academic freedom. This reading, however, clouds the water. Part II attempts to clear the confusion by decoupling the trigger-warning movement from the broader phenomenon of law school corporatization. Trigger-warning demands might alternatively be read as a student critique of traditional law school pedagogy. Especially …
The Role Of Fictional Narratives In Adolescent Identity Formation : A Theoretical Exploration, Anne Lind
The Role Of Fictional Narratives In Adolescent Identity Formation : A Theoretical Exploration, Anne Lind
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study explores the ways in which adolescents' engagement with fictional narratives can support developmental processes of identity formation and individuation. The purpose of the study was to develop a theoretical framework for understanding the intense relationship that some adolescents have with favorite books, movies, and television shows. A review of the literature on the psychology of fiction showed that, when deeply engaged with a narrative, readers are able to simulate characters' experiences in ways that lead to changes in behavior, empathy, and self-concept. A review of the literature on parasocial relationships showed that readers and viewers often form …

Jewish Annihilation Anxiety : Diasporic Legacies Of Trauma, Alexandra T. Samets
Jewish Annihilation Anxiety : Diasporic Legacies Of Trauma, Alexandra T. Samets
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This paper presents and discusses the existence of Jewish annihilation anxiety, using both psychoanalytic theory and thinking from critical whiteness studies to do so. First drawing from early psychoanalytic thinking by both Sigmund Freud (1916, 1926, 1933) and Melanie Klein (1935) on the most basic dangers and fundamental anxieties, and then from later psychoanalytic thinking on the role of inherited trauma in creating enduring anxieties across generations, this paper presents the concept of annihilation anxiety as both an internally experienced psychic state and a trauma-induced one. Using the work of Eric Goldstein (2006) on the process and experience of Jewish …

This qualitative study explores how White clinicians engage in dialogue about race in cross-racial therapy with Black clients. Open-ended survey questions were used to gather narrative data from 12 White clinicians who have conducted therapy with Black clients. The central question of this research study is: when, how and why do White clinicians engage in dialogue about race in cross-racial therapy with Black clients? The study investigates how White clinicians think about their choices to broach the subject of race and their perceptions of the therapeutic alliance as it relates to conversations about race and racial difference. It also explores …
A Critical Survey Of Vestigial Structures In The Postcranial Skeletons Of Extant Mammals, Phil Senter, John G. Moch
A Critical Survey Of Vestigial Structures In The Postcranial Skeletons Of Extant Mammals, Phil Senter, John G. Moch
College of Health, Science, and Technology
In theMammalia, vestigial skeletal structures abound but have not previously been the focus of study, with a few exceptions (e.g., whale pelves). Here we use a phylogenetic bracketing approach to identify vestigial structures in mammalian postcranial skeletons and present a descriptive survey of such structures in the Mammalia. We also correct previous misidentifications, including the previous misidentification of vestigial caviid metatarsals as sesamoids. We also examine the phylogenetic distribution of vestigiality and loss. This distribution indicates multiple vestigialization and loss events in mammalian skeletal structures, especially in the hand and foot, and reveals no correlation in such events between mammalian …

Synthetic Materials With Redox-Triggers For Imaging And Drug Delivery, Jungeun Bae
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Synthetic materials embedded with stimuli-responsive cleavable bonds have been extensively utilized for the development of site-targeted drug delivery system and selective imaging reporters. We developed stimuli-sensitive materials with two different redox switches including trimethyl-locked quinone propionic acid and nitrobenzyl moieties. Novel redox-sensitive polymeric nanoparticles and micelles were prepared from a synthesized monomer containing trimethyl-locked quinone propionic acid as a redox trigger. A hydrophobic cancer drug, Paclitaxel, was incorporated into the redox-responsive polymeric nanoparticles and micelles prepared from the synthesize polymers. The effect of redox stress on the nanoparticles and micelles was evaluated with a chemical reductant, sodium dithionite demonstrating that …

Non-Invasive Drug Delivery To The Posterior Segment Of The Eye: Development Of Formulation Strategies And Evaluation Of Ocular Distribution And Pharmacological Activity, Goutham Reddy Adelli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diseases of the posterior segment of the eye such as diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration and glaucoma are the leading causes for blindness throughout the world. Topical eye drops is the most convenient formulation for daily application. The human eye, however, presents major physiological and dynamic barriers for the topically administered drug/molecule from reaching the retina. Similarly, the blood-retinal and blood-aqueous barriers restricts passage of drug from systemic circulation into the eye. Although intravitreal injections are the gold standards for the treatment of posterior segment ocular diseases, they are associated with pain, inflammation, endopthalmitis and infection. So there is …
Screening Of Natural Products For Their Effect On Kallikrein-Kinin System: Potential Implications In The Treatment Of Hereditary Angioedema, Hassan Abdu Madkhali
Screening Of Natural Products For Their Effect On Kallikrein-Kinin System: Potential Implications In The Treatment Of Hereditary Angioedema, Hassan Abdu Madkhali
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Plasma prekallikrein (PK) activation exerts both physiological and pathological effects within the cardiovascular system and central nervous system (CNS). Activated PK (kallikrein) controls cytokine release from human mononuclear cells and controls both the intrinsic blood coagulation and the alternative complement cascades. The uncontrolled activation of these cascades results in the development of pathological pain and angioedema. Increased plasma kallikrein levels are associated with hereditary angioedema (HAE) and myocardial infarction, whereby kallikrein amplifies the generation of activated factor XII (FXIIa) and bradykinin (BK) release from high molecular weight kininogen (HMWK). The primary objective of this study was to screen natural products …
Fetishizing Southern Brutality: An Intersectional Analysis Of Animalistic Dehumanization In Interracial Pornography, Shawna Faye Felkins
Fetishizing Southern Brutality: An Intersectional Analysis Of Animalistic Dehumanization In Interracial Pornography, Shawna Faye Felkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pornography has been a widely debated issue within the feminist movement since the sex wars of the 1970’s. The conversation has shifted to a sex radical position within the third movement, seeking to be “sex positive” in representations of pornography as a potential site of empowerment. This work, however, seeks to complicate the idea that all depictions of sex are empowering by examining the popular genre of interracial pornography through the lens of the southern tropes that are often enacted within them: the jezebel, southern belle, and black brute. By using these historical tropes with the work of Judith Butler …
The Influence Of Current Year Fire On Leaf Litter Decomposition Rates And Microbial Enzyme Activity In Forests Undergoing Ecological Restoration, Megan E. Overlander
The Influence Of Current Year Fire On Leaf Litter Decomposition Rates And Microbial Enzyme Activity In Forests Undergoing Ecological Restoration, Megan E. Overlander
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a result of fire suppression, open oak woodlands, once characteristic of the interior of the southern USA, are being lost to mesophication. This process leads to changes in the plant community and has the potential to change rates of decomposition and nutrient cycling through changes in environmental conditions or leaf litter composition. Restoration projects to reduce the effects of mesophication include thinning the canopy to remove mesophytic species and prescribed burn regimens to return the plant community to a fire tolerant and dependent one. However it is unclear what effects restoration (or mesophication) has on the decomposition of leaf …

Examining The Relationship Between Student Engagement And Stem Persistence At An Hbcu, Saundra Yates Evans
Dissertations
A growing imbalance in the demand for a science and technology workforce and the declining availability of a science and technology talent pool is challenging America’s world dominance in research and innovation, economic performance, and quality of life. Contributing to this imbalance is flatness in the trend of students selecting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors coupled with decreasing rates of retention in STEM disciplines. Many research studies and reports emphasize that incorporating the untapped talents of Americans who are underrepresented in STEM disciplines--African-Americans, Hispanics, and women--is necessary to increase the pipeline of STEM graduates. A synthesis of college …

The conventional wisdom in U.S. health law and policy holds that states regulate medical practice – the activities of physicians and other health care professionals – while the federal government regulates medical products. But relying on states as the principal regulators of medical practice has, at times, driven law and policy in directions that are problematic from a public health perspective, as demonstrated by a deadly 2012 outbreak of fungal meningitis that was linked to a state-regulated practice known as drug compounding. This Article argues that the federalism concerns underlying the conventional wisdom are misplaced. It demonstrates that, contrary to …
Experimental Comparison Of Empirical Material Decomposition Methods For Spectral Ct, Kevin C. Zimmerman, Taly Gilat Schmidt
Experimental Comparison Of Empirical Material Decomposition Methods For Spectral Ct, Kevin C. Zimmerman, Taly Gilat Schmidt
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Material composition can be estimated from spectral information acquired using photon counting x-ray detectors with pulse height analysis. Non-ideal effects in photon counting x-ray detectors such as charge-sharing, k-escape, and pulse-pileup distort the detected spectrum, which can cause material decomposition errors. This work compared the performance of two empirical decomposition methods: a neural network estimator and a linearized maximum likelihood estimator with correction (A-table method). The two investigated methods differ in how they model the nonlinear relationship between the spectral measurements and material decomposition estimates. The bias and standard deviation of material decomposition estimates were compared for the two methods, …

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an uncommon genetic bone disease associated with brittle bones and fractures in children and adults. Although OI is most commonly associated with mutations of the genes for type I collagen, many other genes (some associated with type I collagen processing) have now been identified. The genetics of OI and advances in our understanding of the biomechanical properties of OI bone are reviewed in this article. Treatment includes physiotherapy, fall prevention, and sometimes orthopedic procedures. In this brief review, we will also discuss current understanding of pharmacologic therapies for treatment of OI.
