Abstract

The paper examines the rate at which students register with the library by comparing the fresh and the returning undergraduate students in the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta Nigeria. Two hundred and fifty (250) copies of questionnaire were randomly distributed among students in late August, 2015 while two hundred and twenty four (224) copies were returned. Also used as databases for the study are the library statistics of registered students and the University’s student enrolment list for a period of five years starting from 2009/2010 to 2013/2014 academic sessions. The study revealed that fresh undergraduate students registered more than …

Physiological Effects Of Aquatic Hypercarbia On Seawater Acclimation In The White Sturgeon (Acipenser Transmontanus), Ciaran A.S. Shaughnessy Nov 2015

Physiological Effects Of Aquatic Hypercarbia On Seawater Acclimation In The White Sturgeon (Acipenser Transmontanus), Ciaran A.S. Shaughnessy

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Migratory fishes encounter a variety of environmental conditions throughout their life, including changes in salinity, temperature, and dissolved gases. It is important to understand how these fishes are able to acclimate to simultaneous environmental stressors. This thesis examined the physiological interaction of elevated dissolved CO2 (an acid-base disturbance) on osmoregulation during seawater acclimation (an ionoregulatory disturbance) in juvenile white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus). Many ion transport mechanisms at the gill involved with acid-base compensation are also required for the regulation of plasma Na+ and Cl+, the predominant extracellular ions. Thus, the interaction between iono- and acid-base regulation has been hypothesized. In …

Effects Of Multiple Species On Motility In Diatom Assemblages, Amanda L. Wolske Nov 2015

Effects Of Multiple Species On Motility In Diatom Assemblages, Amanda L. Wolske

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Diatoms are unicellular algae that, like other phototrophs, depend on light in order to survive. Many diatoms are known to have regulated motile responses to light, giving them a competitive advantage in their complex community, often containing many other species of algae. In order for similar diatom species to coexist in the same assemblage it is thought that each species will resource partition; a behavioral response that allows closely related species to be successful and cohabitate by using slightly different resources. Many experiments have demonstrated that other organisms exhibit this behavior, although the effect of co-existing diatom species on motility …

Multiwavelength X-Ray Diffraction, Maziar Saleh Ziabari Nov 2015

Multiwavelength X-Ray Diffraction, Maziar Saleh Ziabari

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The central problem of diffraction theory is determining the structure of an object given only the intensity of its diffraction pattern. In general, both the amplitude and phase must be known to uniquely solve a structure; however a coherent radiation source is usually required in order to measure the diffacted phases (e.g. in holography). In many important cases, coherent sources are unavailable and other assumptions or methods must be employed to substitute for the missing phase information. One method that has been successfully applied to the specific problem of determining atomic structure from X-ray diffraction intensity patterns has been the …

Though Obsolete, The Civil Union Continues To Mystify Courts, Joanna L. Grossman Nov 2015

Though Obsolete, The Civil Union Continues To Mystify Courts, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Before there was marriage for same-sex couples, there was the civil union. It was a precursor to marriage equality, one that provided the benefits and obligations of marriage without the name—a political compromise before the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. Although the civil union has been made essentially irrelevant, it continues to raise legal questions about the rights and status of its participants. A recent case in New York, O’Reilly-Morshead v. O’Reilly-Morshead , shows continuing confusion about a status that was not quite marriage, but not quite anything else either.

Mass Spectrometry-Based Approaches For Targeted Quantitative Proteomics In Biomarker Development, Mary Joan Castillo Nov 2015

Mass Spectrometry-Based Approaches For Targeted Quantitative Proteomics In Biomarker Development, Mary Joan Castillo

Doctoral Dissertations

The development of disease protein biomarkers and their use in clinical research have great applications in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of complex diseases. Mass spectrometry methods for protein biomarker quantitation have recently gained importance in the early stages of the biomarker pipeline, but their application in the validation phase is limited by their low sample throughput. The technology of ultrathroughput mass spectrometry (uMS) transforms the intrinsic quantitation capability of MS analyte multiplexing to sample multiplexing. Herein, the novel MS-based bioanalytical platform utilized decoupled use of isotopic quantitation reference standard and non-isotopic mass coding reagents to enable one-experiment quantitation of …

Differences In Patterns Of Reproductive Allocation Between The Sexes In Nicrophorus Orbicollis, Ashlee N. Smith, J. Curtis Creighton, Mark C. Belk Nov 2015

Differences In Patterns Of Reproductive Allocation Between The Sexes In Nicrophorus Orbicollis, Ashlee N. Smith, J. Curtis Creighton, Mark C. Belk

Faculty Publications

Organisms are selected to maximize lifetime reproductive success by balancing the costs of current reproduction with costs to future survival and fecundity. Males and females typically face different reproductive costs, which makes comparisons of their reproductive strategies difficult. Burying beetles provide a unique system that allows us to compare the costs of reproduction between the sexes because males and females are capable of raising offspring together or alone and carcass preparation and offspring care represent the majority of reproductive costs for both sexes. Because both sexes perform the same functions of carcass preparation and offspring care, we predict that they …

Igf-1r Inhibition Induces Schedule-Dependent Sensitization Of Human Melanoma To Temozolomide, R Ramcharan, T Aleksic, Wp Kamdoum, S Gao, Et Al Nov 2015

Igf-1r Inhibition Induces Schedule-Dependent Sensitization Of Human Melanoma To Temozolomide, R Ramcharan, T Aleksic, Wp Kamdoum, S Gao, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

Prior studies implicate type 1 IGF receptor (IGF-1R) in mediating chemo-resistance. Here, we investigated whether IGF-1R influences response to temozolomide (TMZ), which generates DNA adducts that are removed by O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), or persist causing replication-associated double-strand breaks (DSBs). Initial assessment in 10 melanoma cell lines revealed that TMZ resistance correlated with MGMT expression (r = 0.79, p = 0.009), and in MGMT-proficient cell lines, with phospho-IGF-1R (r = 0.81, p = 0.038), suggesting that TMZ resistance associates with IGF-1R activation. Next, effects of IGF-1R inhibitors (IGF-1Ri) AZ3801 and linsitinib (OSI-906) were tested on TMZ-sensitivity, cell cycle progression and DSB …

Dashing Away Hypertension: Evaluating The Efficacy Of The Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension Diet In Controlling High Blood Pressure, Preeya Shah Phd, Kyle D. Maxwell, Joseph I. Shapiro Md

Biochemistry and Microbiology

The dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet has been developed and popularized as a non-pharmaceutical intervention for high blood pressure reduction since 1995. However, to date, a comprehensive description of the biochemical rationale behind the diet’s principal guidelines has yet to be compiled. With rising interest for healthy and reliable life-style modifications to combat cardiovascular disease, this review aims to compile the most recent and relevant studies on this topic and make an informed assessment as to the efficacy of and underlying mechanisms operant in the DASH diet. Specifically, the merits of lowering dietary intake of sodium and saturated …

Cortical Components Of Reaction-Time During Perceptual Decisions In Humans, Jacek P. Dmochowski, Anthony M. Norcia Nov 2015

Cortical Components Of Reaction-Time During Perceptual Decisions In Humans, Jacek P. Dmochowski, Anthony M. Norcia

Publications and Research

The mechanisms of perceptual decision-making are frequently studied through measurements of reaction time (RT). Classical sequential-sampling models (SSMs) of decision-making posit RT as the sum of non-overlapping sensory, evidence accumulation, and motor delays. In contrast, recent empirical evidence hints at a continuous-flow paradigm in which multiple motor plans evolve concurrently with the accumulation of sensory evidence. Here we employ a trial-to-trial reliability-based component analysis of encephalographic data acquired during a random-dot motion task to directly image continuous flow in the human brain. We identify three topographically distinct neural sources whose dynamics exhibit contemporaneous ramping to time-of-response, with the rate and …

Matched, Somewhat-Matched Or Mismatched? Predictors Of Degree-Job Match Among Stem Graduates, Taghreed Ahmed Alhaddab Nov 2015

Matched, Somewhat-Matched Or Mismatched? Predictors Of Degree-Job Match Among Stem Graduates, Taghreed Ahmed Alhaddab

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The current third-generation globalization caused structural, organizational and functional changes in the STEM workforce along with changes in human capital flow. The new globalization shift produced new world order causing the STEM workforce to adopt new frameworks, new skills, and new policy approaches to maintain economic strength and achieve growth and prosperity. Available data indicate that the U.S. secondary and postsecondary education system prepares and produce more than an adequate number of STEM graduates. The perceived crisis in the number of U.S. STEM graduates was not confirmed by any data or policy report. Thus, attention should not be caught simply …

Predicted Binding Site Information Improves Model Ranking In Protein Docking Using Experimental And Computer-Generated Target Structures, Surabhi Maheshwari, Michal Brylinski

Faculty Publications

© 2015 Maheshwari and Brylinski. Background: Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) mediate the vast majority of biological processes, therefore, significant efforts have been directed to investigate PPIs to fully comprehend cellular functions. Predicting complex structures is critical to reveal molecular mechanisms by which proteins operate. Despite recent advances in the development of new methods to model macromolecular assemblies, most current methodologies are designed to work with experimentally determined protein structures. However, because only computer-generated models are available for a large number of proteins in a given genome, computational tools should tolerate structural inaccuracies in order to perform the genome-wide modeling of PPIs. …

Failure to close the neural tube results in birth defects, with severity ranging from spina bifida to lethal anencephaly. Few genetic risk factors for neural tube defects are known in humans, highlighting the critical role of environmental risk factors, such as maternal diabetes. Yet, it is not well understood how altered maternal metabolism interferes with embryonic development, and with neurulation in particular. We present evidence from two independent mouse models of diabetic pregnancy that identifies impaired migration of nascent mesodermal cells in the primitive streak as the morphogenetic basis underlying the pathogenesis of neural tube defects. We conclude that perturbed …

The Impact Of Pedagogical Agents' Conversational Formality On Learning And Learner Impressions, Haiying Li Nov 2015

The Impact Of Pedagogical Agents' Conversational Formality On Learning And Learner Impressions, Haiying Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The dissertation examined the impact of agents' conversational formality on the learning of summarization skills and learner impressions in an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) with trialogues (a teacher agent, a student agent, and a human learner). Formal language is in the informational genre (as opposed to narrative) and increases with word abstractness, syntactic complexity, referential cohesion, and deep cohesion. At the other end of the continuum, informal discourse tends to have concrete words, simple syntax, low cohesion (because knowledge-based inferences can fill the gaps), and high narrativity. There have been no experimental investigations that have maniputed teacher language because it …

Molecular Role Of Dab2ip Gtpase Activating Protein In Brain Development, Farimah Salami Nov 2015

Molecular Role Of Dab2ip Gtpase Activating Protein In Brain Development, Farimah Salami

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Dab2ip is the member of Ras GTPase activating protein family that interacts with Disabled-1/2 famlily proteins, which play a critical role in brain development. Dab2ip is mainly known as a tumor suppressor, however recent studies have shown that it has important functions in the mammalian brain. In this study, using bioinformatics and experimental techniques, I characterized the mouse Dab2ip gene structure. Unlike previous reports, I found that the mouse Dab2ip gene has 20 exons and 3 CpG islands. I identified three transcript variants of Dab2ip which starts from exon one. Alternative splicing at the 5' end of these transcripts result …

1,3-Dimethylamylamine (1,3-DMAA) is a stimulant commercially sold in a variety of dietary supplements as a chemical species derived from geranium plants (Pelargonium graveolens). Whether 1,3-DMAA naturally occurs in geranium plants or other dietary ingredients, it has important regulatory and commercial ramifications. An extraction method combined with HPLC-MS/MS is used to determine 1,3-DMAA and 1,4-dimethylamylamine (1,4-DMAA) concentrations in geranium plants with both external calibration and standard addition methods. Samples from the Changzhou, Kunming, and Guiyang regions of China during both winter and summer were analyzed. Following the detection of DMAA in the Changzhou sample, an extraction and pre-column, chiral derivatization chemistry …

Recharge Pathways And Mechanisms To The Memphis Aquifer, John Michael Bursi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

As the primary source of water for Memphis, Tennessee and surrounding areas, the Memphis aquifer is an important natural resource. Recharge to the Memphis aquifer, which is thought to occur by infiltration of precipitation in the exposure belt, is impeded by Quaternary loess and paleosols on the upland surfaces. This study investigated whether incised stream gullies provide a faster rate of infiltration, and potential recharge, relative to the upland surfaces. Through a year of monitoring of physical hydrology and water chemistry within a watershed at the Pinecrest research site, located in Fayette County, Tennessee, along with the implementation of environmental …
