BACKGROUND: The endogenous ability to dedifferentiate, re-pattern, and re-differentiate adult cells to repair or replace damaged or missing structures is exclusive to only a few tetrapod species. The Mexican axolotl is one example of these species, having the capacity to regenerate multiple adult structures including their limbs by generating a group of progenitor cells, known as the blastema, which acquire pattern and differentiate into the missing tissues. The formation of a limb regenerate is dependent on cells in the connective tissues that retain memory of their original position in the limb, and use this information to generate the pattern …
Applications Of High Performance Affinity Chromatography With High Capacity Stationary Phases Made By Entrapment, John A. Vargas Badilla
Applications Of High Performance Affinity Chromatography With High Capacity Stationary Phases Made By Entrapment, John A. Vargas Badilla
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
High performance affinity chromatography (HPAC) is a technique that uses a biologically-related agent such as a transport protein or an antibody as the stationary phase in an HPLC system. In recent years, HPAC has been shown to be a valuable bioanalytical tool for studying solute-protein interactions. Human serum albumin (HSA), the most abundant protein in blood (with concentrations of 35 to 50 mg/mL in serum), has been shown to interact with many drugs, affecting their transport, excretion and metabolism. A physical method for immobilizing proteins in HPAC supports has been optimized in this dissertation by using HSA as a model …
Theory Of Mind Predicts Cooperative Behavior, Gregory Deangelo, Bryan C. Mccannon
Theory Of Mind Predicts Cooperative Behavior, Gregory Deangelo, Bryan C. Mccannon
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Explanations for cooperation in Prisoner’s Dilemma games (PD) have generated significant interest. While institutional explanations, such as the role of repeated interactions and communication, have offered considerable explanatory ability, a psychological measure of Theory of the Mind (ToM) – Reading the Mind in the Eyes – of an individual’s ability to process social and emotional cognition offers new insights. Using this measure, we examine how ToM explains (un)cooperative behavior in a standard PD game. We find that subjects who have higher ToM are less cooperative in PD games and extract higher payoffs.

Direct And Indirect Effects Of The Caribbean Cymothoid Parasite Anilocra Haemuli On Host Energetics, Behavior, And Trophic Interactions, Rachel Lynn Welicky
Student Theses and Dissertations
The majority of coral reef research focuses on organisms that are familiar to humans, yet 80% of coral reef animals are parasites. Research on the direct effects of parasitism has suggested that hosts may undergo both behavioral and physiological changes. These changes may manifest at the ecosystem level, yet evidence of such changes are scarce. The objectives of this study were to investigate the direct and indirect effects of the Caribbean cymothoid parasite Anilocra haemuli on Haemulon flavolineatum (French grunt) energetics, behavior and trophic interactions. I conducted field surveys to measure A. haemuli prevalence of infection and determine its association …

Expanded use of irrigation management tools is needed to improve water use efficiency in eastern Arkansas soybean (Glycine max) production. Irrigation initiation timing was studied on a furrow irrigated, sandy loam commercial field in Mississippi County. A major objective was to develop, validate, and expand use of irrigation timing cues, incorporating local weather station data, atmometers, and soil moisture measurements. Four timing treatments were evaluated: early, recommended, late, and rainfed, and the crop and pest response to each. With above average rainfall in 2014 and 2015, results showed little variation of soybean yield. Yield monitor data indicated penalties only within …
Engineering Novel Glycopeptides As A Molecular Carrier For Thermostable E1 Endoglucanase Expressed In Planta, Hong Fang
Student Theses and Dissertations
Reengineering plant cell walls with cell wall-modifying enzymes (CWMEs) represents a promising solution to overcome the recalcitrance for lignocellulosic biomass efficient conversion to liquid biofuels. This project investigated innovative application of hydroxyproline (Hyp)-O-glycosylation to engineer novel glycopeptide tags for heterologous CWMEs to maximize their hydrolytic functions in cell walls without disrupting composition and architecture. I addressed the hypothesis that a strategically designed glycopeptide tag fused to thermostable E1 endoglucanase and expressed in tobacco will facilitate the enzyme deposition into cell wall matrix to make the resulting biomass more subject to biochemical saccharification, while not adversely affecting the normal growth of …

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Mutations in WNK1 and WNK4, and in components of the Cullin-Ring Ligase system, kelch-like 3 (KLHL3) and Cullin 3 (CUL3), can cause the rare hereditary disease, Familial Hyperkalemic Hypertension (FHHt). The disease is characterized by overactivity of the renal sodium chloride cotransporter (NCC), which is phosphorylated and activated by the WNK-stimulated Ste20-type kinases, SPAK and OSR1. WNK kinases themselves can be targeted for ubiquitination and degradataion by the CUL3-KLHL3 E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. It is unclear, however, why there are significant differences in phenotypic severity among FHHt patients with mutations in different genes. It was reported that kelch-like 2 (KLHL2), …

Synthesis Of Agents For The Treatment And Analysis Of Tropical Diseases, Jeanine Yacoub
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Toxoplasmosis is an opportunistic disease caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite is usually staved off by a healthy immune system and remains dormant in the body. In immunocompromised patients, the parasite can become active and spread throughout the body causing symptoms such as encephalitis, cognitive disorders, seizures, and death. Combination drug therapy is the usual treatment for toxoplasmosis; however, patients suffer from problems of intolerance, allergic reactions, and cytotoxicity. In an effort to identify new drug targets for toxoplasmosis, a series of compounds have been synthesized that can be used as tools to probe the unique …
Playing The 'Blame Game': Accounting And The Construction Of Disruptive Behaviour In Family Interviews, G Blanchard, Tc Auburn, R Dallos
Playing The 'Blame Game': Accounting And The Construction Of Disruptive Behaviour In Family Interviews, G Blanchard, Tc Auburn, R Dallos
More Faculty of Health Research
Systemic conceptualisations suggest that family processes which involve blaming and holding the child accountable for their behaviour play an important role in the maintenance of disruptive behaviour problems. Discourse analytic work in family therapy settings has shown that accountability for the family’s reported problems is a key concern for family members. This study used a conversation analytic (CA) approach to examine family members’ accounts of child disruptive behaviour. The two participating families were both engaged in family therapy for disruptive behaviour problems. Each family participated in a family interview which was recorded and transcribed according to CA principles. The analysis …

The International Health Regulations 10 Years On: The Governing Framework For Global Health Security, Lawrence O. Gostin, Mary C. Debartolo, Eric A. Friedman
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The World Health Organization (WHO) and its global health security treaty, the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR) have lost the world's confidence after the West African Ebola epidemic. The epidemic led to several high-level reviews of the IHR and global health security more broadly. Here, we propose a series of recommendations for operational and legal reforms to enhance the functioning of the FCGH. It is critical that WHO act on them quickly, before the window of opportunity for fundamental reform closes.
WHO should ensure that all states fulfill their obligations to develop national core surveillance and response capacities, including through …

Signaling Mechanisms That Control Ciliated Cell Differentiation, Benjamin John Gerovac
Signaling Mechanisms That Control Ciliated Cell Differentiation, Benjamin John Gerovac
Open Access Dissertations
An innate front-line defense mechanism termed mucociliary clearance (MCC) occurs in the airway epithelium and is critical for respiratory health. MCC is made possible by the coordinated efforts of goblet and multiciliated cells, two cell types that line the airway epithelium. Maintaining the relative populations of goblet and multiciliated cells is necessary for optimum MCC, however, decreases in the multiciliated cell population and dysfunctional MCC are seen in a variety of respiratory diseases. Despite the clinical relevance, there is still much to understand about the signaling pathways that control multiciliated cell fate. Previous data has shown multiciliated cell differentiation of …
