The Medicalization Of Nonhuman Animal Rights: Frame Contestation And The Exploitation Of Disability, Corey Lee Wrenn, Joanne Clark, Maddie Judge, Katharine A. Gilchrist, Delanie Woodlock, Katherine Dotson, Riva Spanos, Jonothan Wrenn
Animal Rights Movement Collection
Nonhuman Animal rights activists are sometimes dismissed as ‘crazy’ or irrational by countermovements seeking to protect status quo social structures. Social movements themselves often utilize disability narratives in their claims-making as well. In this article, we argue that Nonhuman Animal exploitation and Nonhuman Animal rights activism are sometimes medicalized in frame disputes. The contestation over mental ability ultimately exploits humans with disabilities. The medicalization of Nonhuman Animal rights activism diminishes activists’ social justice claims, but the movement’s medicalization of Nonhuman Animal use unfairly otherizes its target population and treats disability identity as a pejorative. Utilizing a content analysis of major …

Introduction: Misreporting smoking behavior is common among younger smokers participating in clinical trials for smoking cessation. This study focused on the prevalence of and factors associated with adolescent misreporting of smoking behaviors within the context of a randomized clinical trial for smoking cessation.
Methods: Adolescent smokers (N = 129) participated in a randomized clinical trial that compared two brief interventions for smoking cessation. Following the final (6-month) follow-up, a confidential, self-administered exit questionnaire examined the extent to which participants admitted to having misreported smoking quantity, frequency and/or consequences during the study. Factors associated with under- and over-reporting were compared …

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an emerging electricity generation technology that has the potential for use in developing countries. This study assessed the feasibility of using MFCs in Tanzania through technical analysis of a MFC prototype alongside with interviews with Tanzanians for a cultural feasibility assessment of MFCs. For the technical analysis, this study evaluated the inputs needed for a household MFC to operate and produce electricity with cattle manure as a fuel and evaluated the electrochemical and chemical performance as well as the fecal coliform reduction of the manure during MFC operation. For this study, a MFC was built …
Engineering Approaches For Suppressing Deleterious Host Responses To Medical Implants, Connor Mccarthy
Engineering Approaches For Suppressing Deleterious Host Responses To Medical Implants, Connor Mccarthy
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Small diameter (< 6 mm) vascular grafts suffer from serious deleterious effects not encountered with their larger diameter relatives, leading to premature graft failure through restenosis. Platelet activation, inflammation, and smooth muscle cell proliferation are leading contributors to thrombosis and neointimal hyperplasia, both contributors to the progression of restenosis. It may be possible to suppress negative biological responses to vascular implants through the modification of surface properties and incorporation of drug release into blood contacting materials. In this work, bioengineering approaches are presented to improve the biocompatibility of small diameter vascular grafts.
We demonstrate a novel engineering approach for incorporating natural, decollagenized elastin matrices into PEU 1074A reinforced vascular grafts through spray-coating and electrospinning processes in a manner that retains elastin’s excellent blood contacting properties. A vascular construct with excellent mechanical and surgical handling properties demonstrating the suppression of neointimal hyperplasia is presented after 21 days in vivo.
Nitric oxide (NO) has been investigated over the past several decades due to its platelet, inflammation, and smooth muscle cell suppressing effects; and if appropriately delivered, could positively mediate the contributors to restenosis. Here, we characterize a novel macrocyclic NO …
Legislating Labors Of Love: Revisiting Commercial Surrogacy In New York, Deborah Machalow
Legislating Labors Of Love: Revisiting Commercial Surrogacy In New York, Deborah Machalow
Indiana Law Journal
After over twenty years of status quo, the New York Legislature has an opportunity to liberalize its surrogacy laws whether during this legislative session or the next. By adopting the proposals with the suggested changes, the Legislature would simultaneously bring the law into conformity with the desires of many New Yorkers and recognize important technological developments. The proposals are marked improvements on the present prohibitory regime; however, they are not perfect. The legislature should consider further protections for the parties to surrogacy arrangements and amend the proposals accordingly. The legislature’s renewed interest in the topic is refreshing; this interest should …

Do Scaffolded Supports Between Aspects Of Problem Solving Enhance Assessment Usability?, Jan D. Mccoy, Leanne Bettesworth, Gerald Tindal, Jenelle Braun-Monegan Stone
Faculty Publications - College of Education
While problem solving as an instructional technique is widely advocated, educators are often challenged in effectively assessing student skill in this area. Students failing to solve a problem might fail in any of several aspects of the effort. The purpose of this research was to validate a scaffolded technique for assessing problem solving in science and social studies at the middle school level. This technique attempts to isolate three aspects of problem solving (data collection, analysis and display, and interpretation) and to measure each aspect separately. Problem solving measures were developed in both science and social studies. These were administered …
Perception Of Educational Equity And School Climate: A Case Study, Elisabeth Ferreira D'Azevedo
Perception Of Educational Equity And School Climate: A Case Study, Elisabeth Ferreira D'Azevedo
Doctor of Education (EdD)
Although educational equity and school climate are considered critical factors to ensuring the success of every student in the 21st century (Darling-Hammond, 2010; Mitchell, Bradshaw, & Leaf, 2010; Skrla, McKenzie, & Scheurich, 2009), limited research has explored the relationship and strength of association between indicators of educational equity and school climate. Literature in these areas has largely treated these areas as separate. Using quantitative data from 24,757 students and 1,404 staff, this statistical analysis investigated whether middle school students and teachers perceive equity in school climate differently based on race, and whether a relationship between perceived equity and school climate …

Klebsiella Pneumoniae Assimilates To Increasing Concentrations Of Cephalothin By Differential Outer Membrane Porin Expression And Increased Production Of Capsular Polysaccharides, Nghi B. Lam
UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses
Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunistic Gram-negative nonmotile bacteria that causes nosocomial infections. In these bacteria, nutrients as well as antibiotics are able to diffuse through the outer membrane via outer membrane porins, transmembrane protein channels. Loss of outer membrane porins, increased capsule production, and a highly mucoid phenotype are commonly observed among antibiotic resistant isolates of this pathogen. The goal of this study was to investigate changes in outer membrane porin expression and capsular polysaccharide production by K. pneumoniae as it transitions to a β-lactam antibiotic resistant phenotype. Klebsiella pneumoniae strain 43816, which is susceptible to β-lactam antibiotics such as …
Molecular And Biochemical Analysis Of Phenolic Acid Decarboxylase From Brettanomyces Yeast Isolates, Chad Lawerence Harris
Molecular And Biochemical Analysis Of Phenolic Acid Decarboxylase From Brettanomyces Yeast Isolates, Chad Lawerence Harris
UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses
Many strains of Brettanomyces pose a major threat to the commercial brewing industry by producing phenolic off-flavors, while a few strains contribute desirable characteristics in unique beer styles. This genus of yeast possesses a two-step pathway that converts hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs) to vinyl and ethyl derivatives that add unwanted flavors and aromas to the final beverage. This project focused on analyzing Brettanomyces yeast isolates for variation in phenolic acid decarboxylase activity (PAD), which catalyzes the first step in the pathway. Each strain was grown in the three different common HCAs (ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid) to understand each strain’s …

The Genesis And Emergence Of Community-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (Ca-Mrsa): An Example Of Evolution In Action?, Alan L. Gillen, Jason Conrad, Michael Cargill
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Staphylococcus aureus infections are a common cause of disease, particularly in colonized persons. Recently, a series of published articles have reported that community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA) strains are evolving and increasingly becoming prevalent in households while health care acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA) is declining in the USA. The changing superbugs have often been used as an example of evolution in action. Although MRSA infections have become increasingly reported in the community, population-based studies of students preparing for the health professions having S. aureus and MRSA colonization are lacking. During the 2014–2015 school year 544 students were tested for MRSA carriage …

Keeping The Lights On During Superstorm Sandy: Climate Change And Adaptation And The Resiliency Benefits Of Distributed Generation, James M. Van Nostrand
Law Faculty Scholarship
Hurricane Sandy (ultimately downgraded to "Superstorm" Sandy by the time it hit the coasts of New York and New Jersey in late October 2012) was the most lethal and destructive hurricane in 2012, resulting in 285 deaths, $68 billion in damages, and 8.5 million utility customers in the eastern United States losing power. Superstorm Sandy provided a wake-up call for electric utilities on the need to adopt a different set of long-term planning tools to improve the resilience of the electric system against anticipated extreme weather events. The experience of Superstorm Sandy provides a case study of the system resiliency …

Sensing Performance Study Of Sic, A Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Material Platform For Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor, Wei Du, Feng Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The sensing properties of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based waveguide sensor on a wide bandgap semiconductor, silicon carbide (SiC), were studied. Compared to other waveguide sensors, the large bandgap energy of SiC material allows the sensor to operate in the visible and near infrared wavelength range, while the SPR effect by a thin gold film is expected to improve the sensitivity. The confinement factor of the sensor at various wavelengths of the incident light and refractive index of the analyte were investigated using an effective index method. Since the change of analyte type and concentration is reflected by the …

Connecting To Others: Studying The Relationship Between Social Exclusion And Imitation, Sarah K. Blyth
Connecting To Others: Studying The Relationship Between Social Exclusion And Imitation, Sarah K. Blyth
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Automatic imitation (AI) refers to the subconscious tendency we have to imitate an observed action, even when that action is irrelevant to or interferes with an action we are attempting to execute (Heyes, 2011; Brass et al., 2000). Human beings display a fundamental need to stay meaningfully connected to others, also known as the need to belong. Previous research shows that an experience of rejection can reduce one’s feelings of connectedness to others (Legate et al., 2013), and that behaviours such as non-conscious mimicry (NCM) increase after being excluded as a possible means of re-affiliation (Lakin et al., 2008). It …
