Design And Development Of Stress Engineering Techniques For Iii-Nitride Epitaxy On Si, Jeff Leathersich
Design And Development Of Stress Engineering Techniques For Iii-Nitride Epitaxy On Si, Jeff Leathersich
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
III-Nitrides have been a heavily researched material system for decades. Their material properties are favorable for a number of applications, most commonly in the optoelectronic and power device industry. Currently a majority of commercialized devices are fabricated on sapphire and SiC substrates but these are expensive and limit the widespread commercialization of the technology. There is substantial ongoing research geared toward the development of GaN on Si substrates because of the significant cost saving that would be realized through the inexpensive, large wafer and maturity of Si fabrication. Significant challenges with the deposition of GaN on Si have, thus far, …

Explaining Participation : An Explanatory History Of Select Gender Patterns In Undergraduate Stem, Michael Pasquale Mastroianni
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This explanatory study examines three focal periods in undergraduate STEM as related to the gender gap. Social, economic, and more general historical data are used to develop a clear and powerful explanation of baccalaureate trends in biology and engineering. Specifically, historical accounts are offered for 1) a ten-year period in undergraduate biology in which the number of baccalaureates awarded to men decreased 44 percent, while the number of baccalaureates awarded to women decreased one percent; 2) the start of a twenty-year period in which the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded in the biological sciences increased 150 percent—from 36,068 degrees in …
Young Adult Friendship : The Portrayal Of Cross-Gender And Cross-Race Friendship On Television, Nichole Suzanne Daegele
Young Adult Friendship : The Portrayal Of Cross-Gender And Cross-Race Friendship On Television, Nichole Suzanne Daegele
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Friendships across race, class and gender have been studied in the past using a variety of theoretical perspectives; however, less often using an intersectional approach. While the study of cross-category friendship has gained more attention in Sociology, gender and race continue to be studied independently of each other. The current study will utilize an intersectional approach to examine how friendships across race and gender are portrayed on television.
Using A Novel Multiplexing Method To Track Cell Populations And Cytodifferentiation During Development Of The Submandibular Salivary Gland, Charles Thomas Manhardt
Using A Novel Multiplexing Method To Track Cell Populations And Cytodifferentiation During Development Of The Submandibular Salivary Gland, Charles Thomas Manhardt
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The development of submandibular salivary glands is complex and requires coordination of specific signaling events. Submandibular salivary glands originate as an epithelial invagination into the adjacent mesenchyme that leads to a single stalk and end bud; this end bud will go through a clefting process. Numerous rounds of clefting will lead to a fully developed salivary gland by this process, which is known as branching morphogenesis. As the gland undergoes morphogenesis, specific cues leading to differentiation of multiple cell types and even epithelial sub classes are required. By the later stages of development the glands are fully innervated, have an …

Wetlands are the world’s largest natural source of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. The strong sensitivity of methane emissions to environmental factors such as soil temperature and moisture has led to concerns about potential positive feedbacks to climate change. This risk is particularly relevant at high latitudes, which have experienced pronounced warming and where thawing permafrost could potentially liberate large amounts of labile carbon over the next 100 years. However, global models disagree as to the magnitude and spatial distribution of emissions, due to uncertainties in wetland area and emissions per unit area and a scarcity of in situ observations. …
Burnout-Depression Overlap: A Review, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent
Burnout-Depression Overlap: A Review, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent
Publications and Research
Whether burnout is a form of depression or a distinct phenomenon is an object of controversy. The aim of the present article was to provide an up-to-date review of the literature dedicated to the question of burnout–depression overlap. A systematic literature search was carried out in PubMed, PsycINFO, and IngentaConnect. A total of 92 studies were identified as informing the issue of burnout–depression overlap. The current state of the art suggests that the distinction between burnout and depression is conceptually fragile. It is notably unclear how the state of burnout (i.e., the end stage …

Nosh-Aspirin (Nbs-1120), A Dual Nitric Oxide And Hydrogen Sulfide-Releasing Hybrid, Reduces Inflammatory Pain, Miriam D. Fonseca, Fernando Q. Cunha, Khosrow Kashfi, Thiago M. Cunha
Publications and Research
The development of nitric oxide (NO)- and hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-releasing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has generated more potent anti-inflammatory drugs with increased safety profiles. A new hybrid molecule incorporating both NO and H2S donors into aspirin (NOSH-aspirin) was recently developed. In the present study, the antinociceptive activity of this novel molecule was compared with aspirin in different models of inflammatory pain. It was found that NOSH-aspirin inhibits acetic acid-induced writhing response and carrageenan (Cg)-induced inflammatory hyperalgesia in a dosedependent (5–150 lmol/kg, v.o.) manner, which was superior to the effect of the same doses of aspirin. NOSH-aspirin’s antinociceptive effect was also …
Identifying Predictors Of Peritraumatic Distress Among 9-1-1 Telecommunicators: The Role Of Family Violence And Emotion Regulation, Alison Krauss
Identifying Predictors Of Peritraumatic Distress Among 9-1-1 Telecommunicators: The Role Of Family Violence And Emotion Regulation, Alison Krauss
Honors Capstones
Emergency responders have been underrepresented in the literature, though it has been noted that they experience greater amounts of distress than the general public. Greater distress has been found to increase the likelihood of developing psychopathology, such as PTSD, and so identifying predictors of distress may assist in decreasing the prevalence of PTSD. Past research has found that witnessing family violence in childhood and emotion dysregulation have been associated with higher amounts of peritraumatic distress. The current study looked to investigate 9-1-1 telecommunicators specifically, and thus it was hypothesized that, among 9-1-1 telecommunicators, emotion regulation difficulties would mediate the link …

Role Of Sigma-1 Receptors In Neurodegenerative Diseases, Linda Nguyen, Brandon P. Lucke-Wold, Shona A. Mookerjee, John Z. Cavendish, Matthew J. Robson, Anna L. Scandinaro, Rae Reiko Matsumoto
Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Pharmacy
Neurodegenerative diseases with distinct genetic etiologies and pathological phenotypes appear to share common mechanisms of neuronal cellular dysfunction, including excitotoxicity, calcium dysregulation, oxidative damage, ER stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Glial cells, including microglia and astrocytes, play an increasingly recognized role in both the promotion and prevention of neurodegeneration. Sigma receptors, particularly the sigma-1 receptor subtype, which are expressed in both neurons and glia of multiple regions within the central nervous system, are a unique class of intracellular proteins that can modulate many biological mechanisms associated with neurodegeneration. These receptors therefore represent compelling putative targets for pharmacologically treating neurodegenerative disorders. In …

Pharmacologic Induction Of The Melanocotin 1 Receptor (Mc1r) Pathway Provides Protection Against Sunburn And Enhances Expression Of Antioxidant Enzymes In The Skin, Alexandra Amaro-Ortiz
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
The inability to tan properly after sun exposure strongly correlates with increased incidence of skin cancer. The melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) is a transmembrane Gs-coupled cell surface receptor found on epidermal melanocytes that transmits pro-survival and pro-differentiation signals mediated by the second messenger cAMP. Humans carrying loss-of-function polymorphisms in MC1R signaling exhibit higher incidences of skin cancers including melanoma.
This study focused on the physiologic effects of topical application of forskolin, an adenylate cyclase activator, in extension (Mc1re/e) K14-SCF animals, which model the fair-skinned UV-sensitive human. Twice daily application of the drug promoted accelerated pigmentation, increased skin darkening …
Role Of Caveolin-1 And Nrf2 In Nutritional Modulation Of Pcb Toxicity, Michael C. Petriello
Role Of Caveolin-1 And Nrf2 In Nutritional Modulation Of Pcb Toxicity, Michael C. Petriello
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in Western societies and is linked to multiple modifiable risk factors including lifestyle choices. Emerging evidence implicates exposure to persistent environmental pollutants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as a risk factor for the development or progression of cardiovascular disease. To reduce disease risks, it is critical to identify sensible means of biomedically reducing the toxicity of persistent organic pollutants and related environmental stressors.
First, we tested a hypothesis that endothelial cell inflammation and subsequent cardiovascular toxicity initiated by coplanar PCBs is modulated by the crosstalk between caveolae and Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like …

Evidence Of Son Preference And Resulting Demographic And Health Outcomes In Pakistan, Zeba Sathar, Gul Rashida, Sabahat Hussain, Anushe Hassan
Evidence Of Son Preference And Resulting Demographic And Health Outcomes In Pakistan, Zeba Sathar, Gul Rashida, Sabahat Hussain, Anushe Hassan
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Pakistan has a highly patriarchal society. Consequently, the desire for sons is a dominant and widely prevalent cultural value that is reinforced by feudal kinship systems that permeate many parts of the country. While reliance on sons is stronger in rural areas because of agricultural work and the tying of land ownership with male inheritance, even in other areas boys are seen to be important in carrying on the family name and taking care of parents in old age. On the other hand, daughters are seen as an expense and an economic burden in both rural and urban areas. A …
Ecohydraulic Investigation Of Diatoms In A Bedrock-Controlled Stream, Alex M. Rittle
Ecohydraulic Investigation Of Diatoms In A Bedrock-Controlled Stream, Alex M. Rittle
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
Recent studies within the past decade or so have shown the importance of algae in geomorphic and hydrologic processes of lotic systems. However, the ecohydraulic role of algae in bedrock systems has largely been ignored. In addition, the utility of algae as indicators of channel dynamics have often been assumed by geomorphologists, but relatively few studies have examined this relationship. The purpose of this study was to determine whether algae, specifically diatoms, are useful indicators of channel geomorphological dynamics, and to examine if distinct habitats or biotopes typical in fluviokarst and bedrock systems provide unique habitat space for diatoms, and …
A Comprehensive Understanding Of Corpse Management In Termites, Qian Sun
A Comprehensive Understanding Of Corpse Management In Termites, Qian Sun
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Undertaking behavior is the disposal of dead individuals in social colonies to prevent potential pathogenic attack. This behavioral trait has convergently evolved in social insects (primarily termites, ants, and honeybee), and is considered an essential adaptation to social living. In honey bee and ants, workers recognize dead colony members through the postmortem change of chemical profile, and corpses are usually removed out of nest. However, in termites, little is known about the behavioral pattern, chemical cue or molecular basis. In the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes, this study investigated undertaking behavior toward corpses of different origins and postmortem times. …
The Scottish Pipe Band In North America: Tradition, Transformation, And Transnational Identity, Erin F. Walker
The Scottish Pipe Band In North America: Tradition, Transformation, And Transnational Identity, Erin F. Walker
Theses and Dissertations--Music
For Scots and non-Scots alike, the sounds of the bagpipes and the pipe band serve as a cultural metaphor for Scottish identity: the skirl of the pipes, the crisp sound of the snare drums, and the unique lilt of the music conjure an imagined Scotland of fierce, kilted clansmen and rugged, picturesque Highland scenery. This nearly global association appears to have been constructed on a series of transformations of cultural practices within Scotland itself, as well as throughout greater Britain and the lands of the Scottish diaspora, that began with the early “kiltophiles” in the late eighteenth century. …

The Medicalization Of Nonhuman Animal Rights: Frame Contestation And The Exploitation Of Disability, Corey Lee Wrenn, Joanne Clark, Maddie Judge, Katharine A. Gilchrist, Delanie Woodlock, Katherine Dotson, Riva Spanos, Jonothan Wrenn
Animal Rights Movement Collection
Nonhuman Animal rights activists are sometimes dismissed as ‘crazy’ or irrational by countermovements seeking to protect status quo social structures. Social movements themselves often utilize disability narratives in their claims-making as well. In this article, we argue that Nonhuman Animal exploitation and Nonhuman Animal rights activism are sometimes medicalized in frame disputes. The contestation over mental ability ultimately exploits humans with disabilities. The medicalization of Nonhuman Animal rights activism diminishes activists’ social justice claims, but the movement’s medicalization of Nonhuman Animal use unfairly otherizes its target population and treats disability identity as a pejorative. Utilizing a content analysis of major …

Kenya Adolescent Sexual And Reproductive Health Policy, Ministry Of Health Kenya
Reproductive Health
This document is a review and revision of the National Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy of Kenya, which involved in-depth consultations with a wide range of stakeholders through literature review, interviews, consultative meetings, and reviews of the various drafts. Many changes took place at the national and international levels that needed to be taken into account as the policy was reviewed, including the Constitution of Kenya (2010) with its attendant devolved governance structure as well as demographics, and social, economic, and technological environment. The government has made concerted efforts as part of Vision 2030 to respond to adolescents and …
