Parental Spatial Input During Parent-Child Interactions: A Two-Dimensional Versus A Three-Dimensional Learning Experience, Ariel Ho
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Children’s spatial ability is predictive of their future achievement in many academic and occupational domains, including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM; e.g., Wai at el., 2009). During the early years, experiences such as hearing spatial language (e.g., Ferrara et al., 2011) and engaging in spatial activities with three-dimensional (3D) blocks or puzzles (e.g., Casey et al., 2008) are found to facilitate children’s spatial learning. Other than 3D toys, the use of two-dimensional (2D) touchscreen media (e.g., iPads®) by young children has been on the rise (e.g., Rideout, 2013). Technology has become part of children’s daily activities and …

Documenting and responding to species invasions requires innovative strategies that account for ecological and societal complexities. We used the recent expansion of Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans/miles) throughout northern Gulf of Mexico coastal waters to evaluate the role of stakeholders in documenting and responding to a rapid marine invasion. We coupled an online survey of spearfishers and citizen science monitoring programs with traditional fishery-independent data sources and found that citizen observations documented lionfish 1–2 years earlier and more frequently than traditional reef fish monitoring programs. Citizen observations first documented lionfish in 2010 followed by rapid expansion and proliferation in …

Along densely populated coasts, the armoring of shorelines is a prevalent cause of natural habitat loss and degradation. This article explores the values and decision making of waterfront homeowners and identifies two interlinked and potentially reversible drivers of coastal degradation. We discovered that: (1) misperceptions regarding the environmental impacts and cost-effectiveness of different shoreline conditions was common and may promote armoring; and (2) many homeowners reported only altering their shorelines in response to damage caused by armoring on neighboring properties. Collectively, these findings suggest that a single homeowner’s decision may trigger cascading degradation along a shoreline, which highlights the necessity …

Major challenges still exist in the cost-competitive production of cellulosic ethanol. Lignocellulose deconstruction using physiochemical pretreatments continues to be the most efficient way to remove lignin and expose cellulose for enzyme-mediated sugar reduction. Recent interest in the development of “value-added” lignin co-products and the desire to reduce the use of hazardous materials has prompted a resurgence of interest in alternative lignocellulosic feedstock and research into environment-friendly biological pretreatments. This article provides an overview of bioethanol processes and economics, standard and alternative feedstocks, physiochemical and biological pretreatments, and lignin chemistry. The chemistry and mode of action of ligninolytic and cellulolytic enzymes …

Last year saw the 20th anniversary edition of JECP, and in the introduction to the philosophy section of that landmark edition, we posed the question: apart from ethics, what is the role of philosophy at the bedside'? The purpose of this question was not to downplay the significance of ethics to clinical practice. Rather, we raised it as part of a broader argument to the effect that ethical questions - about what we should do in any given situation - are embedded within whole understandings of the situation, inseparable from our beliefs about what is the case (metaphysics), what it …
Dividing Nature By The Joints, Chad Wiener
Dividing Nature By The Joints, Chad Wiener
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Most scholars of Aristotle’s biology have accepted the view of D. M. Balme and Pierre Pellegrin that the History of Animals is devoid of any systematic classification of animals. I challenge this reading. I show that Aristotle can produce a taxonomy of animals kinds that are found in the essences of atomic species, or, to borrow from Plato, divide nature by the joints. I start from Aristotle’s positive views of division stated in APo. II.13–14 and how they imply a taxonomic order of a genus. I then develop my interpretation of how Aristotle can divide nature by the joints in …

During spermiogenesis, the post-meiotic phase of mammalian spermatogenesis, transcription is progressively repressed as nuclei of haploid spermatids are compacted through a dramatic chromatin reorganization involving hyper-acetylation and replacement of most histones with protamines. Although BRDT functions in transcription and histone removal in spermatids, it is unknown whether other BET family proteins play a role. Immunofluorescence of spermatogenic cells revealed BRD4 in a ring around the nuclei of spermatids containing hyper-acetylated histones. The ring lies directly adjacent to the acroplaxome, the cytoskeletal base of the acrosome, previously linked to chromatin reorganization. The BRD4 ring does not form in acrosomal mutant mice. …

A Dynamic Programming Algorithm For Finding The Optimal Placement Of A Secondary Structure Topology In Cryo-Em Data, Abhishek Biswas, Desh Ranjan, Mohammad Zubair, Jing He

The determination of secondary structure topology is a critical step in deriving the atomic structures from the protein density maps obtained from electron cryomicroscopy technique. This step often relies on matching the secondary structure traces detected from the protein density map to the secondary structure sequence segments predicted from the amino acid sequence. Due to inaccuracies in both sources of information, a pool of possible secondary structure positions needs to be sampled. One way to approach the problem is to first derive a small number of possible topologies using existing matching algorithms, and then find the optimal placement for each …

Synthesis, Molecular Docking, And Antitumoral Activity Of Alnustone-Like Compounds Against Estrogen Receptor Alpha-Positive Human Breast Cancer, Kaan Küçükoğlu, Hati̇ce Seçi̇nti̇, Aykut Özgür, Hasan Seçen, Yusuf Tutar
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Alnustone-like compounds are promising inhibitors for estrogen receptor \alpha (ER-\alpha), which is a novel cancer therapeutic target. Therefore, 10 alnustone-like compounds with substituents at the phenyl rings were synthesized by condensation of 4-phenyl-2-butanones and cinnamaldehydes via in situ enamination. The compounds displayed either protective activity or inhibited cell growth and proliferation of human breast cancer cells. Molecular docking studies indicated that the synthesized compounds interact with ER-\alpha efficiently. In this work, the protective and inhibitive roles of the synthesized compounds were related to their functional groups and to their binding mode of action on ER-\alpha protein. The compounds are potential …

Pfam Catalyzed Enantioselective Diethylzinc Addition To Imines, Özdemi̇r Doğan, Eda Çağli
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Chiral amines are important starting materials for the synthesis of biologically important compounds. Enantioselective addition of dialkylzinc reagents to imines is a reliable method for the synthesis of these compounds. Different chiral catalysts were developed and used for this method. Phosphorous based PFAM catalysts were tried for the first time in the enantioselective synthesis of amines by reacting diethylzinc with N-sulfonyl imines and N-diphenylphosphinoyl imines. Chiral amines were isolated with moderate to acceptable yields and enantioselectivities.

A New And Simple Procedure For The Trace Determination Of Mercury Using Differential Pulse Polarography And Application To A Salt Lake Sample, Güler Somer, A. Cengi̇z Çalişkan, Olcay Şendi̇l
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A new and simple differential pulse polarographic procedure was established for the trace determination of mercury(II). An indirect method had to be used since no polarographic peak can be observed for its direct determination. According to their standard potentials, the reaction between SO$_{3}^{2-}$ and Hg(II) was suitable. The peak height of sulfite at about -0.70 V (pH 6, 7) was sharp, high, and very reproducible, enabling the accurate determination of low concentrations of Hg(II). It was found that sulfite concentration had to be 3 times larger than mercury at pH 6, in order to have a quantitative reaction. The procedure …

A laboratory method for the acid-free synthesis of S-nitrosothiols (RSNO) from NaNO$_{2}$ and thiols in aqueous buffer of neutral pH is reported. Equimolar amounts of NaNO$_{2}$ and thiol are added to a 100-$\mu $M Na$_{4}$EDTA-containing Na$_{2}$HPO$_{4}$ buffer (100 mM, pH 7.4). Samples are set into liquid nitrogen for 1 min and then thawed to room temperature or in an ice bath. Dependent upon the RSNO, repetition of the procedure may be required. This method may be of particular importance when the classical acid-based method fails or releases harmful gases such as H$_{2}$S.
