Sex Differences In The Kinetic Profiles Of D- And L- Methylphenidate In The Brains Of Adult Rats, J. Bentley, F. Snyder, Stacy D. Brown, R. W. Brown, Brooks B. Pond

OBJECTIVE: Methylphenidate is commonly used in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and narcolepsy. Methylphenidate is administered as a racemic mixture of the d- and l- threo enantiomers; however, the d-enantiomer is primarily responsible for the pharmacologic activity. Previous studies of the behavioral effects of methylphenidate have highlighted sex differences in the responsiveness to the drug, namely an increased sensitivity of females to its stimulatory effects. These differences may be due to differences in the uptake, distribution, and elimination of methylphenidate from male and female brains. Therefore, we compared the pharmacokinetics of d- and l- threo methylphenidate in the …

Evaluating The Vegetation Recovery In The Damage Area Of Wenchuan Earthquake Using Modis Data, Wei-Guo Jiang, Kai Jia, Jian-Jun Wu, Zhenghong Tang, Wen-Jie Wang, Xiao-Fu Liu
Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
The catastrophic 8.0 Richter magnitude earthquake that occurred on 12 May 2008 in Wenchuan, China caused extensive damage to vegetation due to widespread landslides and debris flows. In the past five years, the Chinese government has implemented a series of measures to restore the vegetation in the severely afflicted area. How is the vegetation recovering? It is necessary and important to evaluate the vegetation recovery effect in earthquake-stricken areas. Based on MODIS NDVI data from 2005 to 2013, the vegetation damage area was extracted by the quantified threshold detection method. The vegetation recovery rate after five years following the earthquake …
Mitotic Recombination In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Results From Genetic Instability At Fragile Site Fs2, Shaylynn Delaney Miller
Mitotic Recombination In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Results From Genetic Instability At Fragile Site Fs2, Shaylynn Delaney Miller
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Common fragile sites (CFSs) are present in a number of species and are considered a normal structural feature of the eukaryotic chromosome. CFSs are regions of genetic instability prone to breaking under DNA replication stress. Cancer is a possible result of DNA breaks that lead to a loss of heterozygosity (LOR) in the cell. Mitotic homologous recombination is a method of DNA repair following a break from DNA instability. Our experiments investigated the role of mitotic recombination in the development of LOH. Replication stress was induced in Saccharomyces cerevisiae through the use of the GALl/lO promoter; this modified promoter …

Musculoskeletal Markers Of Linguistic Variance On The Human Mandible, Hannah Catherine Hilbert
Musculoskeletal Markers Of Linguistic Variance On The Human Mandible, Hannah Catherine Hilbert
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Skeletal morphology is greatly influenced by muscle action and articulation. Exertion of force by muscle use permanently alters bone shape. It can therefore be assumed that the muscles involved in speech production would play a role in shaping the stomatognathic structures (i.e. relating to the mouth and jaw). This study has been designed to explore the resulting cranio-facial manifestations of linguistic diversity amongst modern Homo sapiens. Utilizing data independently collected from American, French, and Philippine skeletal collections, it is concluded that a correlation exists (albeit not significant) between observed musculoskeletal markers on the human mandible and the repetitive tongue …
The Effects Of Salinity On The Stratification And Nutrient Dynamics Of Inland Lakes In Southeast Michigan, Hallee Kansman
The Effects Of Salinity On The Stratification And Nutrient Dynamics Of Inland Lakes In Southeast Michigan, Hallee Kansman
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Temperate lakes typically turnover twice annually; however, certain factors can reduce the possibility of turnover. One of these factors may be the addition of road salt to the watershed. Road salt increases the density of water, increasing the energy needed to turnover a lake. Reduced turnover can have major effects on the nutrient dynamics of the lake. In this study, I examined seven small, deep lakes in Southeast Michigan to determine if turnover was affected by salinity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether these turnover events in TSL have changed since 2009 and how common incomplete spring …
Candida Albicans Quorum Sensing Molecules Stimulate Mouse Macrophage Migration, Jessica C. Hargarten, Tyler C. Moore, Thomas M. Petro, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Audrey L. Atkin
Candida Albicans Quorum Sensing Molecules Stimulate Mouse Macrophage Migration, Jessica C. Hargarten, Tyler C. Moore, Thomas M. Petro, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Audrey L. Atkin
Kenneth Nickerson Papers
The polymorphic commensal fungus Candida albicans causes life-threatening disease via bloodstream and intra-abdominal infections in immunocompromised and transplant patients. Although host immune evasion is a common strategy used by successful human fungal pathogens, C. albicans provokes recognition by host immune cells less capable of destroying it. To accomplish this, C. albicans white cells secrete a low-molecular-weight chemoattractive stimulant(s) of macrophages, a phagocyte that they are able to survive within and eventually escape from. C. albicans opaque cells do not secrete this chemoattractive stimulant( s). We report here a physiological mechanism that contributes to the differences in the interaction of C. …
