Neural Responses To Truth Telling And Risk Propensity Under Asymmetric Information, Hideo Suzuki, Masaya Misaki, Frank Krueger, Jerzy Bodurka Jan 2015

Neural Responses To Truth Telling And Risk Propensity Under Asymmetric Information, Hideo Suzuki, Masaya Misaki, Frank Krueger, Jerzy Bodurka

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Trust is multi-dimensional because it can be characterized by subjective trust, trust antecedent, and behavioral trust. Previous research has investigated functional brain responses to subjective trust (e.g., a judgment of trustworthiness) or behavioral trust (e.g., decisions to trust) in perfect information, where all relevant information is available to all participants. In contrast, we conducted a novel examination of the patterns of functional brain activity to a trust antecedent, specifically truth telling, in asymmetric information, where one individual has more information than others, with the effect of varying risk propensity. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and recruited 13 adults, …

Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda) Control By Rnai As A Plausible Component To Integrated Pest Management Practices, Jonathan W. Robeson

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) control through RNAi machinery as a novel mode of action is a weapon sought after by the agricultural community to squelch the growing problem of S. frugiperda resistance to pesticides and transgenic crops. Significant gains in the understanding of RNAi cellular interactions and insect gene silencing are represented to provide opportunities to influence further research of S. frugiperda RNAi. This composition highlights the intracellular action of dsRNA, successful RNAi attempts on insect pests, the biological difficulty of S. frugiperda and how RNAi success against S. frugiperda would be highly advantageous in the quest to …

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

The pupal parasitoids, Spalangia cameroni Perkins and Muscidifurax raptor Girault and Sanders, can be purchased for biological control of house flies Musca domestica L. and stable flies Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae). Little is known about the odors involved in host-seeking behavior of these two species, so odors associated with house flies were investigated in the laboratory using a Y-tube olfactometer. Odor stimuli from house fly host puparia, larvae, pine-shavings bedding with horse manure, and developing flies in the pine-shavings-manure substrate were evaluated in bioassays using the two pteromalid species. In choice tests, naı¨ve female S. cameroni were strongly attracted …

An Update Of The Captive Management And Reintroduction Of The Salt Creek Tiger Beetle, Cicindela Nevadica Lincolniana (Coleoptera:Carabidae) At Omaha’S Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, Sarah Jenkins, Traci Clevenger

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Tiger beetles are a high speed predator, both as larvae and adults. There are over 2,600 species found worldwide. They are so fast that their eyes can’t gather enough light to process visual information while running and the beetles have to pause during pursuit to regain sight of their target. The fastest known tiger beetle can run up to 8 kilometers per hour (5 mph) which is comparable to a human running 772.5 kph (480 mph) when adjusted for body length (Yong, 2014). The adults are sexually dimorphic, with males possessing short white hairs on the inside of the tarsi …

Evaluation Of Resident Canada Goose Movements To Reduce The Risk Of Goose-Aircraft Collisions At Suburban Airports, M. Elizabeth Rutledge, Christopher E. Moorman, Brian E. Washburn, Christopher S. Deperno

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Resident (non-migratory) Canada goose (Branta canadensis) populations in suburban environments pose risks to human health and safety. Specifically, the relatively large size and gregarious behavior of geese combined with an overlap in aircraft flight space pose substantial risk of property damage and human fatalities from goose-aircraft collisions. We estimated home range and core use areas of resident Canada geese and evaluated goose movements to better define the risk of goose-aircraft collisions around Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA.We placed satellite transmitters on 16 of 763 neck- and leg-banded geese to identify and track individuals over …

Alumina Supported Iron Catalyst For Hydrogen Production: Calcination Study, Anis H. Fakeeha, Wasim Ullah Khan, Ahmed A. Ibrahim, Raja L. Al-Otaibi, Ahmed S. Al-Fatesh, Moustafa A. Soliman, Ahmed E. Abasaeed

Chemical Engineering

Production of clean hydrogen from thermal decomposition of methane was studied over impregnated 30%Fe/Al2O3 catalysts in a micro-activity fixed-bed reactor. The reactant gases comprising CH4 and N2 in the ratio of 1.5 to 1 were passed through reactor at a flow rate of 25 mL/min. Moreover, effect of calcination was investigated as well. The catalytic activity results indicated that calcination temperature had a significant impact on the performance of 30%Fe/Al2O3 catalyst. The catalyst calcined at 450°C, having CH4 conversion as well as H2 yield over 70%, showed better activity as compared to all other calcination temperatures.

(Re-)Grasping The Opportunity Interest: Lehr V. Robertson And The Terminated Parent, Lashanda Taylor Adams Jan 2015

(Re-)Grasping The Opportunity Interest: Lehr V. Robertson And The Terminated Parent, Lashanda Taylor Adams

Journal Articles

In 1997, an Ohio court terminated Peggy Fugate’s parental rights to her sixyear-old daughter, Selina. At the time, Ms. Fugate, an incarcerated drug abuser, did not fight the order, believing her daughter would be adopted into a clean, stable home.1 However, Selina was never adopted. For the next seven years, Selina had trouble with the police and ran away from her foster home numerous times. While Selina’s life was going downhill in many respects, her mother was rehabilitating. She entered recovery, married, obtained full-time employment and was living in stable housing with enough room for her daughter. Recognizing the strides …

Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Predator-Prey Interactions In Winter Wheat, Katelyn A. Kowles Jan 2015

Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Predator-Prey Interactions In Winter Wheat, Katelyn A. Kowles

Theses and Dissertations--Entomology

Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are pests of multiple cropping systems, primarily due to the viruses they vector and direct crop damage that is exacerbated by their rapid population growth. In Kentucky, grain aphids (Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion avenae) cause significant yield loss to winter wheat as vectors of Barley Yellow Dwarf virus (BYDV), prompting the routine application of insecticides. Coupled with increasing human populations and decreasing arable land, it is increasingly evident that biological control services provided by natural enemies represent a viable long-term management option. Aphids are preyed upon by a diverse array of predators that can be …

Sediment Organic Carbon Fate And Transport In A Fluviokarst Watershed In The Bluegrass Region, Admin Husic Jan 2015

Sediment Organic Carbon Fate And Transport In A Fluviokarst Watershed In The Bluegrass Region, Admin Husic

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Mature karst topography is well recognized within the hydrology and geology communities to include subterranean fluid pathways that act as turbulent conduits conveying fluid from surface stream sinks called swallets to sources called springs. However, we find that little knowledge has been reported with regards to the transport and fate of terrestrially-derived sediment organic carbon (SOC) within karst watersheds. This study investigated the hypothesis that karst pathways could act as biologically active conveyors of SOC that temporarily store sediment, turnover carbon at higher rates than otherwise considered, and recharge depleted SOC back to the surface stream within the fluvial system. …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Substituted Coumarin Derivatives As Inhibitors Of Monoamine Oxidase B, Ian A. Kieffer Jan 2015

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Substituted Coumarin Derivatives As Inhibitors Of Monoamine Oxidase B, Ian A. Kieffer

Chemistry Theses

Monoamine oxidase B (MAO B) is of clinical importance due to its perceived role in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, making inhibitors of MAO B popular candidates for drug design. A series of coumarin derivatives have been prepared and assayed, revealing that the synthesized inhibitors act through a competitive mode of inhibition. In addition, these inhibitors are potent with Ki values in the nanomolar range. Overall, substitution at the 3- position of the coumarin was found to be important to inhibitor potency and further study of 3-aryl coumarin substitution computationally led to the prediction of 3-(3-aminophenyl)-6-hydroxycoumarin as a lead compound …

Critical Programming: Toward A Philosophy Of Computing, John Bork Jan 2015

Critical Programming: Toward A Philosophy Of Computing, John Bork

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Beliefs about the relationship between human beings and computing machines and their destinies have alternated from heroic counterparts to conspirators of automated genocide, from apocalyptic extinction events to evolutionary cyborg convergences. Many fear that people are losing key intellectual and social abilities as tasks are offloaded to the everywhere of the built environment, which is developing a mind of its own. If digital technologies have contributed to forming a dumbest generation and ushering in a robotic moment, we all have a stake in addressing this collective intelligence problem. While digital humanities continue to flourish and introduce new uses for computer …
