Reverse Design Of Solid Rocket Grain Geometry, Yechan Kang
Reverse Design Of Solid Rocket Grain Geometry, Yechan Kang
Master's Theses
The reverse design of solid rocket motors remains a challenging process due to the nonlinear relationship between the grain geometry and the internal ballistics. The reverse design process involves obtaining an optimal grain geometry given a target performance curve set by mission requirements, which is the inverse problem of the forward design. The purpose of this study is to assess the validity and implementation of neural network and simulated annealing algorithms to perform the reverse design process. A modified phase field model of the eikonal equation is derived to simulate the evolution of combustion surfaces over time, enabling burn back …

Abiotic Stress Impacts On Macrophomina Root Rot And Nano-Encapsulated Citrus Oils To Control Fruit And Foliar Pathogens Of Strawberry, Marina J. Gutierrez
Master's Theses
Disease remains one of the major constraints to the productivity and economic success of the California strawberry industry. The most important soilborne pathogen is Macrophomina phaseolina, causing Macrophomina root rot (MRR). The most economically significant airborne pathogens include Botrytis cinerea, causing Botrytis fruit rot (BFR), and Podosphaera aphanis, causing powdery mildew (PM).
Disease severity of MRR is highly dependent on environmental factors. Therefore, understanding which abiotic stressors contribute most to disease development is crucial for effective management. A two-year field experiment at Cal Poly, SLO (2024 and 2025) evaluated the effects of drought stress, two elevated chloride …

Background : Limited ancestral diversity has impaired our ability to detect risk variants more prevalent in ancestry groups of predominantly non-European ancestral background in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). We construct and analyze a multi-ancestry GWAS dataset in the Alzheimer’s Disease Genetics Consortium (ADGC) to test for novel shared and population-specific late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD) susceptibility loci and evaluate underlying genetic architecture in 37,382 non-Hispanic White (NHW), 6728 African American, 8899 Hispanic (HIS), and 3232 East Asian individuals, performing within ancestry fixed-effects meta-analysis followed by a cross-ancestry random-effects meta-analysis. Results: We identify 13 loci with cross-population associations including known loci at/near …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) includes a defining hallmark that correlates most closely to cognitive decline, namely misfolded tau protein. However, the “upstream” etiology and downstream clinical manifestations of tauopathies are quite diverse. Tau deposition elicits different pathological phenotypes and outcomes depending on the tau strain, proteoforms, and regional susceptibility. Posttranslational modifications (PTM) can alter tau structure, function, networks, and its pathological sequelae. We uncovered tau citrullination on multiple epitopes caused by peptidyl arginine deiminase (PAD) enzymes. PAD-induced citrullination irreversibly converts arginine residues to citrulline, producing a net loss of positive charge, elimination of pi–pi interactions, and increased hydrophobicity. We observed increased …

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the criminal law of sexual assault have in many ways grown up together over the last four decades. In this article we examine the impact of the Charter on the fault requirement for sexual assault and sexual offences against children. We argue that the Charter has been used repeatedly to undermine the early gains of feminist law reform and that courts have gone out of their way to avoid the reasonable steps provisions of the Criminal Code. Courts are consistently reluctant to expect men to desist from sexual activity until they have …

Translational Research On Color Vision: From Mechanisms To Performance Enhancement In Diverse Settings, Jewearly Lundby
Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation investigated the mechanisms and applications for optimizing color vision performance across diverse contexts. In a world where color cues augment critical decisions to optimize performance and safety in transportation (e.g., aviation, railway), military, law enforcement, medical diagnostics, and myriad occupational tasks, deficiencies in color perception pose significant challenges. By uniting four interrelated studies, this work explored intrinsic retinal processes, assistive technologies for deficiencies, and novel pathways that challenge conventional understandings of vision. The research bridged fundamental vision science with applications in occupational settings, low vision rehabilitation, and clinical diagnostics, ultimately aiming to optimize color performance.
The first study …
Drivers Of Ecosystem Respiration In The Middle Rio Grande Floodplain Aquifer, Eva Tipps
Drivers Of Ecosystem Respiration In The Middle Rio Grande Floodplain Aquifer, Eva Tipps
Biology ETDs
Little is known about carbon flux and ecosystem metabolism in river floodplains, despite their potentially large and dynamic contributions to carbon storage and loss. We hypothesized that the region of intermittent saturation (ROIS), which is the subsurface interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, is a biogeochemical ‘hotspot’ for ecosystem respiration and carbon transformation. Groundwater depth and variability in the ROIS facilitate interactions between aquatic and terrestrial processes, but their role in carbon fluxes is poorly understood. We developed a novel method utilizing high-frequency sensors in groundwater wells to capture biogeochemical ‘hot moments’ of ecosystem respiration in the ROIS of the …
Synthesis Of Antibody Functionalized Polyaniline/Polystyrene/N-Gqds Composite Fibermats For Sweat Based Cortisol Biosensing Applications, Ashwin James
Honors Theses
Noninvasive, wearable biosensors capable of detecting stress biomarkers in sweat require electrodes that are flexible, conductive, insoluble in water, and highly sensitive at low concentrations of analyte. In this work, bovine serum albumin blocked and anti-cmab immobilized nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots integrated polyaniline/polystyrene composite fibermat electrodes (BSA/Anti-Cmab/N-GQDs/PANI/PS electrodes) were synthesized and evaluated as a potential platform for an electrochemical cortisol biosensor in sweat based systems. Polyaniline was utilized in order to provide electrical conductivity, while polystyrene served as a carrying polymer for mechanical support and its hydrophobicity. Composite fibermats were manufactured through Forcespinning™, followed by a secondary polyaniline graft …

Hyaluronic Acid Loaded With Aloe Vera-Derived Extracellular Vesicles: A New Bioactive Approach For Fibrotic Scarring, Maria Camila Ceballos Santa
Theses
Disruptions in wound healing can result in pathological outcomes ranging from chronic nonhealing wounds to excessive fibrotic scarring. Hypertrophic scars and keloids are hallmarks of this dysregulation, characterized by abnormal collagen deposition, persistent myofibroblast activation, and disorganized extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress play central roles by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage essential macromolecules and sustain pro-inflammatory signaling, while promoting the transdifferentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts and the excessive production of ECM proteins, such as collagen and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). This fibrotic cascade leads to tissue stiffness, contractility, and disfigurement, affecting the well-being of …

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Scientific tables report critical research insights, data, and findings for scientific progress. Because Portable Document Format (PDF) is the de facto standard format for scientific paper publishing, there has been an emerging need for an automatic method to extract data from PDF files. A significant fraction of scientific tables exhibit complex structure and content, making it challenging for machine learning tools to accurately extract the content directly from PDF files. Despite the advancements in Table Structure Recognition (TSR), automated extraction of data from complex scientific tables remains a challenge due to variations in table structures and contents. In this dissertation, …
Aluminum As A Tracer Of Dust Deposition To The Ocean: A Case Study From The Bermuda Region, Tara Elizabeth Williams
Aluminum As A Tracer Of Dust Deposition To The Ocean: A Case Study From The Bermuda Region, Tara Elizabeth Williams
OES Theses and Dissertations
Aluminum (Al), a major component of mineral aerosol (dust), partially dissolves in seawater and is widely used as a tracer for estimating time‐averaged dust fluxes to the ocean. Such estimates rely on dissolved Al (DAl) inventories in the surface mixed layer (SML), an assumed SML residence time of DAl (TDAl), the fractional solubility of Al in dust (AlS), and the mass fraction of Al in dust. In this study, dust flux estimated from seasonal, water-column DAl data from the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) region are compared with direct dust flux estimated from contemporaneous measurements of …
Evaluation Of Ocean Lidar Enhancement Through Miniaturization And Gated Pmt-Based Range Extension, Chandler Austin Slater
Evaluation Of Ocean Lidar Enhancement Through Miniaturization And Gated Pmt-Based Range Extension, Chandler Austin Slater
OES Theses and Dissertations
Oceanographic lidar systems remotely characterize the vertical structure of the upper ocean by recording the light backscattered from a laser pulse as it propagates through the water column. Historically these systems have been constrained by limited detection ranges, often capturing only a portion of the illuminated water column, typically fading to noise around the 10% isolume. A primary constraint has been the limited dynamic range of digitizers, which inhibits the ability to resolve both intense near-field and faint far-field backscatter signals within a single acquisition. To address this, we developed a novel optical lidar system incorporating gated photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) …
Observed Parenting, Parent-Child Aggression, And Intimate Partner Violence As Predictive Of Family Dysfunction, Paige Munshell
Observed Parenting, Parent-Child Aggression, And Intimate Partner Violence As Predictive Of Family Dysfunction, Paige Munshell
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Family systems theories contextualize violence as occurring across multiple levels of the family, yet much of the existing literature focuses on a single family member’s outcome (i.e., the child) and neglects to include data collected from fathers. This study examined the associations between indicators of functioning at the dyadic-level in the family system—observed parenting, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) perpetration, and Parent-Child Aggression (PCA) risk—and later overall family dysfunction. Participants were 180 mothers and 144 of their male partners evaluated when their child was 18 months old and re-evaluated at 4 years old. Measures of observed parenting, IPV perpetration, and PCA …
Schema, Stigma, And The “We-Them” Divide: Perspectives On Ageism From Everyday Life To Healthcare, Temple D. West
Schema, Stigma, And The “We-Them” Divide: Perspectives On Ageism From Everyday Life To Healthcare, Temple D. West
English Theses & Dissertations
Ageism remains a pervasive and often underexamined form of discrimination, affecting older adults across both everyday and clinical contexts. This paper explores how cognitive schemas—mental frameworks that shape perception and experience—and stigma interact to reinforce a “we–them” divide between and older patients and healthcare providers, as well as between older and younger individuals in broader society. Through focus groups and listening to the voices of older patients, this study examines how assumptions of age-based decline are embedded in society and inform schemas of ageism. It considers how those schemas shape the spoiled identity of older people as a stigmatized group, …
Tracing The Journey Of Dissolved Organic Matter: From Leaf Litter Photodegradation To Microbial Processing In Tropical Streams, Samantha Nicole Sullivan
Tracing The Journey Of Dissolved Organic Matter: From Leaf Litter Photodegradation To Microbial Processing In Tropical Streams, Samantha Nicole Sullivan
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a major reservoir of organic carbon in aquatic ecosystems and plays a central role in global carbon cycling through its transformation and remineralization to carbon dioxide (CO₂). As DOM moves from terrestrial environments into streams and rivers, its chemical composition is altered by a combination of microbial and photochemical oxidation processes that regulate both its reactivity and its persistence during transport. However, the molecular mechanisms governing these oxidative transitions, particularly in tropical ecosystems characterized by strong hydrologic seasonality and substantial inputs of plant-derived material, remain insufficiently resolved. This dissertation integrates ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry, optical characterization, …

Reports, Projects, and Research
The call for an increased understanding of artificial intelligence in the U.S. AI Action Plan (The White House, 2025), in tandem with the growing use of AI by terrorist organizations (see Theobald et al., 2025), motivates our effort to provide clarity around the emerging technologies. In doing so, we define and distinguish the features of agentic AI and provide several case studies to illustrate the nefarious use of these tools. Although the current base rate for this type of use is low, we forecast hypothetical use cases given previous examples of terrorists adopting technology and outline the malign use of …

The green-synthesized silver-titanium dioxide (Ag/TiO2) nanocomposite was successfully produced in this study by the synergistic effects of the Cassia siamea leaf extract. In the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, the absorbance improved when the nanoparticle was incorporated into TiO2. The energy gap of the composite reduced as the absorbance increased. Numerous functional groups in the formation of NP were detected by FTIR, and their possible role in NP formation was suggested. The synthesized nanoparticles and nanocomposites were found to be crystalline with X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) studies. The average crystallite size of the nanoparticle was 3.95 nm compared to nanocomposite …

Lemurs are often cited as an example of adaptive radiation, as more than 100 extant species have evolved and filled ecological niches on Madagascar. However, recent work suggests that lemurs lack a hallmark of other adaptive radiations: explosive speciation rates that decline over time. Thus, characterizing the tempo and mode of evolution in lemurs can reveal alternative ways that hyperdiverse clades arise over time, which might differ from traditional models. We explore lemur evolution using a phylogenomic dataset with broad taxonomic sampling that includes the lorisiforms of Asia and continental Africa. Our analyses reveal multiple bursts of diversification (without subsequent …

Carbon sequestration is one of the major strategies for removing atmospheric carbon dioxide and fixing it in the soil and plants. The research study focused on the carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas dynamics of three different forage sorghum cultivars: Sugar Graze Ultra (annual), PSH20TX01 (perennial seeded), and PSH09TX15 (perennial rhizomes), in Southern Texas, where each cultivar had nine plots. The field study was conducted over two growing seasons, in 2024 and 2025, at the Prairie View A&M University research farm. Three different fertilizer rates, recommended, half-recommended, and zero fertilizer rates, were applied. Soil greenhouse gas emissions were measured using a …
Modeling And Control Of Spring-Mass Systems With Switched Dynamics Using Reservoir Computing, Osemudiamen Andrew Ihimekpen
Modeling And Control Of Spring-Mass Systems With Switched Dynamics Using Reservoir Computing, Osemudiamen Andrew Ihimekpen
All Theses
Hybrid spring-mass systems with dynamic state switching present significant challenges for modeling and control due to their complex nonlinear dynamics and discrete state transitions. In this research, a novel reservoir computing framework based on echo-state networks (ESNs) was proposed to model and control spring-mass systems with two distinct states: F1 (without air friction) and F2 (with air friction). The system switched between states based on velocity thresholds, creating a complex, hybrid dynamic that required sophisticated modeling approaches. The proposed method enabled efficient learning of spatiotemporal patterns in hybrid dynamics, offering accurate system identification and robust control capabilities.
The framework was …

Predicting the effects of climate change on plant and animal populations is an urgent challenge for understanding the fate of biodiversity under global change. At the surface, quantifying how climate drives the vital rates that underlie population dynamics appears simple, yet many decisions are required to connect climate to demographic data. Competing approaches have emerged in the literature with little consensus around best practices. Here we provide a practical guide for how to best link vital rates to climate for the purposes of inference and projection of population dynamics. We first describe the sources of demographic and climate data underlying …
Mass Spectrometry- And Genomic-Based Characterization Of Novel Glycosphingolipid-Producing Bacteria And Their Glycosyltransferases, Tahir Ali
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) are a type of membrane-lipids commonly found in eukaryotes, as well as in bacteria from the order Sphingomonadales. In these bacteria, GSLs replace lipopolysaccharides as key structural and functional components of the outer membrane. These molecules play a crucial role in maintaining membrane integrity and helping bacteria adapt to environmental stresses. Additionally, they hold significant potential in biomedical research due to their ability to modulate the immune response through interactions with the CD1d receptor. Despite their important biological and biomedical roles, the diversity and biosynthesis of bacterial GSLs are far less understood compared to their eukaryotic counterparts. In …

Background: The immature lungs of very preterm infants are exposed to supraphysiologic oxygen, contributing to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease that is the most common morbidity of prematurity. While the microbiota significantly influences neonatal health, the relationship between the intestinal microbiome, particularly micro-eukaryotic members such as fungi and yeast, and lung injury severity in newborns remains unknown. Results: Here, we show that the fungal microbiota modulates hyperoxia-induced lung injury severity in very low birth weight premature infants and preclinical pseudohumanized and altered fungal colonization mouse models. Instead of fungal communities dominated by Candida and Saccharomyces, the first stool …
“The Goal Is To Help The Community”: Motivations And Experiences Of Diverse Families In A Special Education Parent Advocacy Program, Diana Cruz
Dissertations
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004) entitles parents of eligible students with disabilities to meaningful participation in their children’s educational planning. Despite this mandate, many parents encountered barriers that limited their ability to participate in special education processes. These challenges were amplified for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families who often lacked the social and cultural capital needed to navigate the system (Trainor, 2010b). Culturally and linguistically diverse parents experience systemic barriers such as limited interpretation, discrimination, and cultural differences that restrict their engagement (Buren et al., 2018; Doucet, 2011; Harry, 2008; Kalyanpur et al., 2000; Sanders-Smith et …
Reinsuring Ai: Energy, Agriculture, Finance & Medicine As Precedents For Governance Of Frontier Artificial Intelligence, Nicholas Stetler
Reinsuring Ai: Energy, Agriculture, Finance & Medicine As Precedents For Governance Of Frontier Artificial Intelligence, Nicholas Stetler
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Federal reinsurance for advanced artificial intelligence offers a credible foundation for managing risk at scale. Traditional legal tools such as regulation, litigation, and voluntary guidelines, lack the institutional capacity to address deep uncertainty, widespread spillover effects, and low-probability but catastrophic harms. A public financial infrastructure distributes risk, incentivizes responsible development, and enables earlier detection of emerging threats. Precedent exists in nuclear energy, agriculture, healthcare, and finance, where federal reinsurance enabled markets to function despite underlying volatility. The same institutional logic applies to frontier AI.
Part I explains how general-purpose and frontier AI models work, and why they have become a …
Geochemical Analysis Of The Eagle Ford Shale In Webb And Dimmit Counties, Tx, Natalie G. Girlinghouse
Geochemical Analysis Of The Eagle Ford Shale In Webb And Dimmit Counties, Tx, Natalie G. Girlinghouse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Late Cretaceous Eagle Ford Shale of South Texas is a mixed carbonate–siliciclastic succession that serves as both a prolific hydrocarbon source and reservoir. This study integrates chemostratigraphy, mineralogical analysis, and elemental ratio proxies to reconstruct depositional environments and assess controls on detrital influx, paleoproductivity, and redox conditions across multiple cores in Webb and Dimmit counties. Major, trace, and redox-sensitive elements were evaluated alongside Total Organic Content (TOC) and carbonate content to identify stratigraphic trends and environmental shifts.
Results reveal distinct geochemical signatures between the Upper and Lower Eagle Ford Shale, with the Lower Eagle Ford characterized by elevated Al-rich …

Climate oscillations like the El Niño-Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation significantly impact marine ecosystems. Traditionally, warm events are thought to suppress nutrient availability, reduce phytoplankton biomass, and change community structure. However, using two decades of field observations, remote sensing, Copernicus reanalysis, and Earth system modeling, we find very different responses in the western tropical Pacific. During El Niño, chlorophyll concentrations and diatom contributions increase, while La Niña reverses that trend. The further amplification of these El Niño-Southern Oscillation-driven contrasts by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation can be attributed to its effects on regional circulation, including the enhancement of eddy activity …
