What Do Elementary School Librarians Know And Believe About Students With Color Vision Deficiencies?, Karla Collins
What Do Elementary School Librarians Know And Believe About Students With Color Vision Deficiencies?, Karla Collins
Education & Human Services Faculty Publications
Colour vision deficiencies affect approximately eight percent of the male population, yet the condition is often overlooked in the educational setting despite the pervasiveness of colour in the school. The purpose of this study was to explore how elementary school librarians provide instruction and prepare the library environment to meet the needs of students with colour vision deficiencies. Findings indicate that elementary school librarians in Virginia did not feel knowledgeable about colour vision deficiencies but were interested in knowing more and expressed a desire to make changes. The case study participants'ʹ knowledge increased from pre-‐‑test to post-‐‑test. There were noticeable …

Fibroblast encapsulation is a stage of the wound healing process in which the implanted device is separated from the biological environment due to the formation of fibrotic tissue. Uncontrolled adhesion of fibroblasts, called fibrosis, has the ability to inhibit an implanted device’s functionality over its lifetime. Over time, fibroblasts have been shown to cause loosening and failure of bone-anchor implants which could include the possibility of harming the patient. The encapsulating process could also hinder the sensitivity of implanted biosensors operating in the body for continuous monitoring. Unfortunately, the antifouling surfaces which are commonly used on implanted devices to control …
Blood Typing Device Without Reagents: Sensing Electrodes To Replace Optics, Nupur Bihari
Blood Typing Device Without Reagents: Sensing Electrodes To Replace Optics, Nupur Bihari
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
There is need to develop a fast and efficient procedure for detecting blood type that makes use of an electronic measurement to minimize human error and is portable so that it can be used in triage situations. A process to develop a crossover frequency based blood typing device is described. Alternating field drives red blood cells over the sensing electrodes and depending on the capacitance measured between pairs of sensing electrodes, the position of these RBCs can be determined. The convergence/divergence of these cells at a particular frequency determines blood type, since each type has a characteristic frequency. This project …

Changes In Plant Species Composition And Structure In Two Peri-Urban Nature Preserves Over 10 Years, Rebecca W. Dolan, Jessica D. Stepens, Marcia E. Moore
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Peri-urban natural areas, at the boundaries of cities and adjacent agricultural/rural land, are subject to ecological threats endemic to both land use types. We used permanent plots to document changes in habitat quality by monitoring herbaceous-layer plant species presence and cover over a decade (1996/97 and 2007) in two peri-urban nature preserves in central Indiana, U.S.A. The preserves are comprised of different forest community types: wet-mesic depressional forest and mesic upland forest. Habitat characteristics, based on Floristic Quality Assessment parameters, showed only a single change for either preserve between survey years: wetness values were lower in the wet-mesic depressional site …

This is an exhilarating time to be in public health! Internationally, the digital world has created an environment for the economic security needed to protect health and promote healing of all mankind. Globalization allows scientists to treat and track diseases in ways that have never been possible. In the United States (U.S.), the federal mandate for equal access to health care has opened a plethora of imaginary and tangible boundaries of which were antecedents to just about every–ism known to public health providers. With this exciting reform comes the need for workforce awareness and new ways of thinking and …

Challenging Race-Based Stereotypes About Gay And Bisexual Men’S Sexual Behavior And Perceived Penis Size And Size Satisfaction, Christian Grov, Lena D. Saleh, Jonathan M. Lassiter, Jeffrey T. Parsons
Publications and Research
Racial prejudice and stereotyping in gay and bisexual communities may be important contextual factors that contribute to racial disparities in HIV. In an effort to challenge race-based stereotypes regarding gay and bisexual men’s sexuality, we sought to determine the extent to which race and ethnicity were associated with (1) racial homophily (i.e., same-race partnerships), (2) sexual behavior (e.g., number of partners, condomless anal sex (CAS), sexual position (top/versatile/bottom)), and (3) perceived penis size and size satisfaction. Data were taken from a survey of 1,009 gay and bisexual men recruited using a street-intercept method at gay, lesbian, and bisexual community events …
Temporal Comparisons On The Genetic Variation Of The Dusky Gopher Frog (Lithobates Sevosus), Kristin Michelle Hinkson
Temporal Comparisons On The Genetic Variation Of The Dusky Gopher Frog (Lithobates Sevosus), Kristin Michelle Hinkson
Online Theses and Dissertations
Monitoring temporal changes in genetic diversity within populations can provide vital information on future viability. The dusky gopher frog, Lithobates sevosus, exists in isolation with an estimated population size of 100-200 individuals, and previous research has shown that low genetic variability exists as a consequence of isolation and population size reduction. However, the temporal changes in genetic variation are not known. Therefore, my objectives were to (1) determine temporal trends in population genetic variation and implications for long-term viability of L. sevosus and (2) estimate effective population size. To accomplish these objectives, egg samples collected from 1997 to 2014 were …

Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research
Atlantic oyster beds provide instrumental estuarine infrastructure, shaping waterways and mediating the impacts of storm surge. In addition, the reefs provide habitat for numerous species. The oysters themselves are expert filter feeders, remediating poor water quality at little cost to the organism. As the free-swimming oyster larvae (spat) only settle on the shells of their forbears, the reefs are essential in perpetuation of the species, as well as for the continuation of such invaluable ecosystem services. Oyster reefs of the New York City waterway system have long been subject to environmental degradation, from water pollution and sedimentation to dredging. Randall’s …

The ‘New’ Heidegger, Babette Babich
The ‘New’ Heidegger, Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections
If discussion of “new” approaches to Martin Heidegger contradicts Heidegger’s own indictment of the passion for “novelty” in philosophy, today’s Black Notebooks scandal reminds us of the ontic problem of new news. Indeed the backwards working evidence of the notebooks kept before, during, and after WWII both vindicates and problematizes his notion of temporality temporalizing from the future -- lapsing into the past -- setting up what is now regarded as patent in the present. Simultaneously, we see that if heretofore many philosophers of technology sought to dismiss engagement with Heidegger’s critique of technology, these critical contributions turn out to …

Calling Science Pseudoscience: Fleck’S Archaeologies Of Fact And Latour’S ‘Biography Of An Investigation’ In Aids Denialism And Homeopathy, Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections
Fleck’s Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact foregrounds claims traditionally excluded from reception, often regarded as opposed to fact, scientific claims that are increasingly seldom discussed in connection with philosophy of science save as examples of pseudo-science. I am especially concerned with scientists who question the epidemiological link between HIV and AIDS and who are thereby discounted—no matter their credentials, no matter the cogency of their arguments, no matter the sobriety of their statistics—but also with other classic examples of so-called pseudo-science including homeopathy and other sciences, such as cold fusion. The pseudo-science version of the demarcation problem turns …

Transdisciplinary research involves cooperation, exchange of information, sharing of resources and integration of disciplines to achieve a common scientific goal. In this study, collaborators utilized tools and knowledge of materials science, anthropology, archaeology, geosciences and biology in an attempt to determine the provenience of skeletal remains of unknown origin. The exchange of ideas and skills along with the crossing of disciplines in this study sucessfully allowed the incorporation of expertise from many team members. This transdisciplinary approach to research provided a more comprehensive and detailed analysis than any one field alone could provide. An archaeological assessment of a human skull …

Aggregation In Complex Triacylglycerol Oils: Course Grained Models, Tyler Gordon
Aggregation In Complex Triacylglycerol Oils: Course Grained Models, Tyler Gordon
College of Arts and Sciences Presentations
Nanoscale structures formed by edible fats play an important role in the physical properties of foods. In this research we investigate the structures formed by triacylglycerols (TAGs). TAGs form crystalline nanoplatelets (CNPs), which in turn form fat crystal networks in edible oils. We model CNPS in a multicomponent oil consisting of a liquid component, and a component which undergoes nanoscale phase separation to surround the CNPs with a solid coating. We performed Monte Carlo simulations of the system and computed structure functions to determine the spatial distribution of CNPs. We were able to observe three types of behavior depending on …
Implications Of A Changing Agro-Ecosystem On The Nascent Wine Grape Production Industry In Idaho, Eric Lindquist
Implications Of A Changing Agro-Ecosystem On The Nascent Wine Grape Production Industry In Idaho, Eric Lindquist
Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
Wine-grape growing in the state of Idaho is just now coming into its own. Unlike traditional and established row crops, sustainable wine grape production requires the encouragement and development of new agricultural capacity in the state. Concurrently, creating a sustainable wine grape production culture in the state may be constrained and impacted by a changing climate and related stresses on the ecosystem of the semi-arid inland northwest. An understanding of the effect that a changing ecosystem will have on the viability of growing wine grapes, as well as an examination of the challenges that both farmers and policymakers will face …

Causal And Mechanistic Explanations, And A Lesson From Ecology, Viorel Pâslaru
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Jani Raerinne and Lindley Darden argue that causal claims are not sufficiently explanatory, and causal talk should be replaced with mechanistic talk. I examine several examples from ecological research, two of which rely on causal models and structural equation modeling, to show that the assertions of Raerinne and of Darden have to be reconsidered.

JSU Yearbooks
The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.
