Looking For Peace In The Australian National Curricula, Katerina Standish Jan 2015

Looking For Peace In The Australian National Curricula, Katerina Standish

Peace and Conflict Studies

Education can be a source of cultural attitudes—a transmission belt—a cultural institution that can dispense communal values and cultural ideals in both teaching and curriculum. This empirical mixed-methods study utilizes the methodologies of directive (qualitative) and summative (quantitative) content analysis to analyse the national curricular statements of Australia (Early Learning, Foundation to 10 and, Senior 11-12) to determine if three elements common in peace education programs appear: recognition of violence (direct, structural or cultural); addressing conflict nonviolently; and, creating the conditions of positive peace. It finds that despite a copious amount of violent content, overall, the curricula …

Shelf-Life Improvement Of Distillers Wet Grains With Solubles, Janie Denise Mcclurkin-Moore Jan 2015

Shelf-Life Improvement Of Distillers Wet Grains With Solubles, Janie Denise Mcclurkin-Moore

Open Access Dissertations

Distillers wet grains with solubles (DWGS) is a co-product of the ethanol production using the dry-grind process. DWG is widely used as a feed and supplemental protein source in North American cattle rations. However due to its short shelf-life, 3-4 days in the summer and 7-10 days in the winter, its use is limited to cattle feeding facilities within close proximity to an ethanol production plant. It is known that the shelf-life of DWGS in the summer diminishes drastically compared to DWGS in the winter. This effect is primarily due to temperature, which drives mold growth in high moisture feedstocks. …

Influence Of Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata) Peptides On Insulin Resistance, Maria J. Barnes, F. O. Uruakpa, C. C. Udenigwe

College of Health and Human Services

Biomolecules from cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) can be beneficial in the reduction of hyperglycemia and strengthening the antioxidant status of individuals with diabetes. L6 rat skeletal muscles were exposed to various doses of cowpea peptides (0.1, 1, 10 and 100 ng) for 20 hours or insulin (100 nM) for 30 minutes. Proteins were isolated from the treated cells and analyzed by Western blot for the phosphorylation of Akt (a form of protein kinase B; PKB). Study findings show that the cowpea peptides can induce Akt phosphorylation in the cell culture. This indicates that administering the cowpea peptides to the skeletal muscle …

College of Health and Human Services

Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I), is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency in the α-L-iduronidase enzyme, resulting in decreased enzymatic activity and accumulation of glycosaminoglycans. The disorder phenotypically manifests with increased urine glycosaminoglycan excretion, facial dysmorphology, neuropathology, cardiac manifestations, and bone deformities. While the development of new treatment strategies have shown promise in attenuating many symptoms associated with the disorder, the bone phenotype remains unresponsive. The aim of this study was to investigate and further characterize the skeletal manifestations of the Idua-W392X knock-in mouse model, which carries a nonsense mutation corresponding to the IDUA-W402X mutation found …

Designer Genes, Designer Drugs And Resources Designing “The New Biology”: A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Fred Stoss

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

A seven-foot 1950s-style model of DNA hangs in my office, as a reminder of what we then knew about “The Molecule of Life.” We today marvel at how far we have come in our understanding of that molecule, its impact on the study of biology, and the new discoveries in “The New Biology” of the Post-Genomic Era. What resources, services, publications and training is required of science librarians to assist students, faculties, and staff. What are today’s driving forces directing “The Newest Biology?”

Developmental Ethanol Exposure Leads To Dysregulation Of Lipid Metabolism And Oxidative Stress In Drosophila, Theresa Logan-Garbisch, Anthony Bortolazzo, Peter Luu, Audrey Ford, David Do, Payam Khodabakhshi, Rachael French Jan 2015

Developmental Ethanol Exposure Leads To Dysregulation Of Lipid Metabolism And Oxidative Stress In Drosophila, Theresa Logan-Garbisch, Anthony Bortolazzo, Peter Luu, Audrey Ford, David Do, Payam Khodabakhshi, Rachael French

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Ethanol exposure during development causes an array of developmental abnormalities, both physiological and behavioral. In mammals, these abnormalities are collectively known as Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE) or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). We have established a Drosophila melanogaster model of FASD, and have previously shown that developmental ethanol exposure in flies leads to reduced expression of insulin like peptides (dILPs) and their receptor. In this work, we link that observation to dysregulation of fatty acid metabolism and lipid accumulation. Further, we show that developmental ethanol exposure in Drosophila causes oxidative stress, that this stress is a primary cause of the …

A Tide Prediction And Tide Height Control System For Laboratory Mesocosms, Luke Miller, Jeremy Long Jan 2015

A Tide Prediction And Tide Height Control System For Laboratory Mesocosms, Luke Miller, Jeremy Long

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Experimental mesocosm studies of rocky shore and estuarine intertidal systems may benefit from the application of natural tide cycles to better replicate variation in immersion time, water depth, and attendant fluctuations in abiotic and edaphic conditions. Here we describe a stand-alone microcontroller tide prediction open-source software program, coupled with a mechanical tidal elevation control system, which allows continuous adjustment of aquarium water depths in synchrony with local tide cycles. We used this system to monitor the growth of Spartina foliosa marsh cordgrass and scale insect herbivores at three simulated shore elevations in laboratory mesocosms. Plant growth decreased with increasing shore …

Microhabitat Conditions Influence Mesohabitat Associations And Distribution Of Larval Salamanders In Headwater Streams, J. M. Yeiser, Stephen C. Richter Jan 2015

Microhabitat Conditions Influence Mesohabitat Associations And Distribution Of Larval Salamanders In Headwater Streams, J. M. Yeiser, Stephen C. Richter

Biological Sciences Faculty and Staff Research

Distribution patterns of stream biota are the result of complex interactions between individuals and their surrounding environment. Determining the spatial scale by which an organism is most influenced is paramount to understanding distribution patterns. Using a multi-scale approach, we investigated factors influencing habitat associations of larval Ambystoma barbouri (streamside salamander) and Eurycea cirrigera (southern two-lined salamander) in three Kentucky headwater streams. We used likelihood ratio G tests to identify associations between species and mesohabitat (i.e., runs, riffles, and pools), and we used microhabitat variables to predict the presence and abundance of salamanders via a priori multiple regression modeling. Ambystoma barbouri …

Lung tissues were collected and evaluated for the expression of proteins associated with inflammation and cellular …

Going Viral: A Critical, Post-Structural Exploration Of Feminist Culture Jamming As Cultural Therapeutic, Leah Boisen Jan 2015

Going Viral: A Critical, Post-Structural Exploration Of Feminist Culture Jamming As Cultural Therapeutic, Leah Boisen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using a discursive framework informed by critical theory and post-structural philosophy (particularly via the works of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler), this dissertation proposes the existence of pathology at both individual and cultural levels. Shifting away from the language of social problems, I propose that the pervasive and harmful ideology of patriarchy promulgated through discourse constitutes not just a problem, but a cultural sickness. Calling for a revised understanding of the relationship between culture and individual, and a new respect for the powerfully constitutive role of discourse, I argue that many of the common symptom patterns and problems we treat …

Centering The Teenage "Siren": Adolescent Workers, Sexual Harassment, And The Legal Construction Of Race And Gender, Anastasia M. Boles

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Recent scholarship and media attention has focused on the prevalence of sexually harassing behavior directed at working teenagers, and the emergence of sexual harassment lawsuits by these minors against their employers. Although many of the legal issues concerning workplace sexual harassment and adult workers (and the various state and federal jurisprudence prohibiting it) have been widely discussed, there is surprisingly little discourse, research, and precedent addressing the problem of workplace sexual harassment and teen workers. Currently, most sexual harassment cases brought by adolescent workers are litigated using the doctrinal framework for adult workers. Only the Seventh Circuit has developed an …
