The Present study was designed to examine the role of agglomeration, density and the resulting fractal dimension of nanomaterials in cell culture media. Studies were completed on the kinetics and the process of agglomeration, as well as how to calculate fractal dimensions. The correlation of such complex agglomeration patterns of nanomaterials in culture media, their translocation into cells, and toxic effects were observed. Our results showed that smaller primary particles agglomerated at an accelerated rate when compared to the larger primary particles. They also demonstrated increased cellular uptake, but exhibited lower fractal dimensions. The larger primary particle agglomerates displayed obvious …

Computational Estimation Of The Pka's Of Purines And Related Compounds, Kara L. Geremia

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The acid dissociation value pKa of a compound provides important information regarding the neutral and ionic forms of the compound present under different conditions. However, for many compounds experimental pKa values are not available, and for others the measured values are sometimes uncertain. Consequently, having a computational means for estimating pKa values can be of benefit for biochemical, pharmaceutical, polymer, and many other studies. Purines form a key group of bioactive compounds whose acid/base activities are of considerable interest. The purine class includes such diverse compounds as the nucleic acid bases adenine and guanine, the gout-related compound uric acid, the …

Gastric cancer (GC) is a major cause of global cancer mortality. Genetic variations in DNA repair genes can modulate DNA repair capability and, consequently, have been associated with risk of developing cancer. We have previously identified a T to C point mutation at nucleotide 889 (T889C) in DNA polymerase beta (POLB) gene, a key enzyme involved in base excision repair in primary GCs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mutation and expression of POLB in a larger cohort and to identify possible prognostic roles of the POLB alterations in GC. Primary GC specimens and their matched normal …

Wrestling With Expectations: An Examination Of How Asian American College Students Negotiate Personal, Parental, And Societal Expectations, Michelle Samura

Education Faculty Articles and Research

This research draws on a broader study that situates Asian American college students within larger sociohistorical and political contexts. I examined Asian American college students’ experiences and what it means to be “Asian American” in and through these experiences. Two types of expectations emerged from the data: students’ internal expectations—the expectations that they have for themselves as well as their college and postcollege experiences, and external expectations from family and society. The various ways that students negotiate internal and external expectations translate into particular understandings of freedom and possibility they carry into college. I also discuss students’ precollege racial awareness …

An Evolutionary Perspective On Human Cross-Sensitivity To Tree Nut And Seed Allergens, Amanda E. Fisher, Annalise M. Nawrocki

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Tree nut allergies are some of the most common and serious allergies in the United States. Patients who are sensitive to nuts or to seeds commonly called nuts are advised to avoid consuming a variety of different species, even though these may be distantly related in terms of their evolutionary history. This is because studies in the literature report that patients often display sensitivity to multiple nut species (cross-sensitivity) if they have an existing nut allergy. These reports suggest that cross-sensitivity in patients with nut allergies may be caused by an IgE antibody reacting with epitopes present in the seed …

Rarity In Astragalus: A California Perspective, Philip W. Rundel, Thomas R. Huggins, Barry A. Prigge, M. Rasoul Sharifi

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Astragalus (Fabaceae), the largest genus of plants in the world with an estimated 3270 species, is known for large numbers of rare endemic species. An inventory of patterns of climatic, topographic, and edaphic diversity of Astragalus taxa in California (98 native species and 144 named taxa) provides a means to understand the occurrence of rarity in relation to climatic equitability and regional species richness of congeneric taxa. Most taxa in the genus have relatively small ranges of distribution, with 50% restricted geographically to a single Jepson Bioregion. The California Native Plant Society lists 51 Astragalus taxa (35% of the native …

Parents play a vital role inEducation, but the parents perspective regarding the use of high-stakes testing in schools remains deficient. This is especially true of minority parents. Research on the use of high-stakes testing has been mixed, indicating both benefits and hindrances to student academic growth andEducational experiences. Parental involvement and a collaborative effort between the school and family have consistently yielded positive benefits for childrens academic learning and success. Given the diversified landscape of Americas schools, the significance of the parent perspective in making change within the school to further Latino studentEducational achievement is paramount. Interviews were conducted with …

New Evidence That Bimanual Motor Timing Performance Is Not A Significant Factor In Developmental Stuttering, Allison Ilice Hilger Jan 2015

New Evidence That Bimanual Motor Timing Performance Is Not A Significant Factor In Developmental Stuttering, Allison Ilice Hilger

Open Access Theses

Stuttering is a disorder that involves a breakdown in the speech-motor system, resulting in disfluencies such as part- and whole-word repetitions, prolongations, and blocks. This study addresses the question regarding whether this motor breakdown is specific to the speech-motor system, or more generalized across motor systems. As an expansion of Olander, Smith, and Zelaznik (2010), we measured bimanual motor timing performance in 115 children: 70 children who stutter (CWS) and 45 children who do not stutter (CWNS). The children were followed for five years of the study by completing a clapping task using a synchronization-continuation paradigm. Two analyses were completed. …

'In' Or 'As' Space?: A Model Of Complexity, With Philosophical, Simulatory, And Empirical Ramifications, Charles H. Smith Jan 2015

'In' Or 'As' Space?: A Model Of Complexity, With Philosophical, Simulatory, And Empirical Ramifications, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

A General Systems model based on ideas originating with the writings of Benedict de Spinoza is described, starting with its philosophical underpinnings, and proceeding on to its relation to modern systems concepts, including attempts to simulate the relationships posed, and measure real world structures. Central to the idea is the notion that spatial extension may not have a prior existence, but emerges only through an entropy maximization process in which information and energy exchange is balanced among some limited number of subsystems that in sum comprise any given functioning complex system. Related published empiricism concerning geographical/geological systems – the hypsometry …

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Computation has become a critical component of research in biology. A risk has emerged that computational and programming challenges may limit research scope, depth, and quality. We review various solutions to common computational efficiency problems in ecological and evolutionary research. Our review pulls together material that is currently scattered across many sources and emphasizes those techniques that are especially effective for typical ecological and environmental problems. We demonstrate how straightforward it can be to write efficient code and implement techniques such as profiling or parallel computing. We supply a newly developed R package (aprof) that helps to identify computational bottlenecks …

Alternative Extraction Method Of Guanidine Metabolites From Marine Sponge, Ptilocaulis Spiculifer, Savannah Barnett, Andrew A. Yeagley, Amorette Barber

Theses & Honors Papers

Marine sponges are known for their use of biologically active allelopathic compounds. With almost every species of sponge having been shown to produce some chemical with medicinal properties, their survival is becoming increasingly important. Current extraction methods used by research teams require a large sample relative to the size of the sponge, which threatens the survival of the organism. 1 Ptilocaulis sp., or the orange tree sponge, is known to produce guanidine metabolites. This derivative has demonstrated biological activity against cell lines of leukemia, uterine, and cervical cancer.2 3 In this study we have developed a method for the chemical …
