Love In The Time Of Graduation: Exploring The Identity Development Of College Seniors In Romantic Relationships, Noam Waksman
Love In The Time Of Graduation: Exploring The Identity Development Of College Seniors In Romantic Relationships, Noam Waksman
Psychology Honors Papers
This project was a qualitative exploration into the lives of college seniors currently in romantic relationships. Participants included 11 committed, heterosexual couples (22 participants in total) from schools in the Northeast. In each couple, at least one member was a senior in college at the time of participation. Participants were interviewed separately and asked a protocol of questions regarding their relationships and post-graduate plans. No initial hypotheses were established. Instead, the interviews were transcribed and emergent themes and patterns were identified through a grounded analysis of the interviews. Ultimately, a conceptualization emerged from the previously identified patterns and themes, and …
The Health Risks Of Chemicals In Personal Care Products And Their Fate In The Environment, Lisa Paulsen
The Health Risks Of Chemicals In Personal Care Products And Their Fate In The Environment, Lisa Paulsen
Chemistry Honors Papers
Personal care products are everyday consumer products used to cleanse, enhance, or alter the appearance of the body, including, but not limited to, shampoos, body washes, lotions, and cosmetics. The regulations and safety information surrounding personal care products are severely lacking. The laws regulating the environmental fate of these chemicals and the harmful effects they can have on environmental ecosystems or organisms that are exposed to them are even more limited. However, studies have shown that the chemicals can have a dizzying array of health risks, including diseases on the rise in human populations such as diabetes, obesity, autism, ADHD, …

Engaging Students In Current Topics: Ecosystem Disruption, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll
Faculty Publications & Research
One of the most compelling aspects of studying biology is that it has immediate relevance to the world around us. It is the study of life, which can give us amazing insight into how we as organisms work as well as our place in Earth’s ecosystem. This second point is especially crucial for our students to understand, as the Earth is in many ways in a state of ecological crisis. Ecosystems across the globe are changing, often as the result of human influence, and an understanding of the causes and effects of these changes is essential for our students, especially …

A Comparison Of Survey Methods For Documenting Presence Of Myotis Leibii (Eastern Small-Footed Bats) At Roosting Areas In Western Virginia, John K. Huth, Alexander Silvis, Paul R. Moosman Jr., W. Mark Ford, Sara Sweeten
Virginia Journal of Science
Many aspects of foraging and roosting habitat of Myotis leibii (Eastern Small-Footed Bat), an emergent rock roosting-obligate, are poorly described. Previous comparisons of effectiveness of acoustic sampling and mist-net captures have not included Eastern Small-Footed Bat. Habitat requirements of this species differ from congeners in the region, and it is unclear whether survey protocols developed for other species are applicable. Using data from three overlapping studies at two sampling sites in western Virginia’s central Appalachian Mountains, detection probabilities were examined for three survey methods (acoustic surveys with automated identification of calls, visual searches of rock crevices, and mist-netting) for use …

The recent exponential increase in the use of engineered nanoparticles (eNPs) means both greater intentional and unintentional exposure of eNPs to microbes. Intentional use includes the use of eNPs as biocides. Unintentional exposure results from the fact that eNPs are included in a variety of commercial products (paints, sunscreens, cosmetics). Many of these eNPs are composed of heavy metals or metal oxides such as silver, gold, zinc, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide. It is thought that since metallic/metallic oxide NPs impact so many aspects of bacterial physiology that it will difficult for bacteria to evolve resistance to them. This study …

Chemically Self-Assembled Antibody Nanorings: A Novel Approach To Bispecific Design For Cancer Therapeutics, Kari A. Gabrielse
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Targeted antibody therapeutics are currently being developed for treatment of a wide variety of cancers. By extending the scope of targeted antibody therapeutics into a bispecific design, it has been shown that simultaneous targeting of the CD3 T cell receptor and cancer cell receptors is possible. While great success has been achieved with the use of bispecific agents, many of these agents are genetically fused antibody fragments that can only target one type of cancerous receptor. Here we describe a simple and straightforward method of spontaneously assembling bispecific antibody therapeutics. Using fusion proteins consisting of two dihydrofolate reductase proteins and …
