Brain-Penetrating Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Rg2833 Reduces The Viability Of Human Malignant Melanoma Cell Lines Sk-Mel-5 And Sk-Mel-28 In Vitro, Lauren Green

Summer Research Experience Poster Presentations

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) play an important role in the epigenetic control of gene expression in both normal and cancer cells. Previous studies have demonstrated that pharmaceutical inhibition of HDACs can kill and/or suppress the growth of cancer cells. RG2833 is a HDAC inhibitor that targets specific HDACs known to be active in cancer cells. Melanoma cells have previously been shown to respond to HDAC inhibitors that are structurally similar to RG2833. We hypothesized that the inhibition of HDAC activity by RG2833 would result in the reduced growth and/or death of cells from the malignant melanoma cell lines SK-MEL-5 and SK-MEL-28. …

Homing With Stereovision, Paramesh Nirmal, Damian Lyons Jan 2015

Homing With Stereovision, Paramesh Nirmal, Damian Lyons

Faculty Publications

Visual Homing is a navigation method based on comparing a stored image of a goal location to the current image to determine how to navigate to the goal location. It is theorized that insects such as ants and bees employ visual homing techniques to return to their nest or hive, and inspired by this, several researchers have developed elegant robot visual homing algorithms. Depth information, from visual scale, or other modality such as laser ranging, can improve the quality of homing. While insects are not well equipped for stereovision, stereovision is an effective robot sensor. We describe the challenges involved …

Performance Verification For Behavior-Based Robot Missions, Damian M. Lyons, Ron Arkin, Shu Jiang, Tsungming Liu, Paramesh Nirmal

Faculty Publications

Certain robot missions need to perform predictably in a physical environment that may have significant uncertainty. One approach is to leverage automatic software verification techniques to establish a performance guarantee. The addition of an environment model and uncertainty in both program and environment, however, means the state-space of a model-checking solution to the problem can be prohibitively large. An approach based on behavior-based controllers in a process-algebra framework that avoids state-space combinatorics is presented here. In this approach, verification of the robot program in the uncertain environment is reduced to a filtering problem for a Bayesian Network. Validation results are …

Vasculogenesis And Angiogenesis In Vegf Receptor-1 Deficient Mice, Vivienne C. Ho, Guo-Hua Fong Jan 2015

Vasculogenesis And Angiogenesis In Vegf Receptor-1 Deficient Mice, Vivienne C. Ho, Guo-Hua Fong

UCHC Articles - Research

Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (VEGFR-1)/Flt-1 is a transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptor for VEGF-A, VEGF-B, and placental growth factor (PlGF). VEGFR-1 is an enigmatic molecule whose precise role in postnatal angiogenesis remains controversial. Although many postnatal and adult studies have been performed by manipulating VEGFR-1 ligands, including competitive binding by truncated VEGFR-1 protein, neutralization by antibodies, or specific ligand overexpression or knockout, much less is known at the level of the receptor per se, especially in vivo. Perplexingly, while VEGFR-1 negatively regulates endothelial cell differentiation during development, it has been implied in promoting angiogenesis under certain conditions in adult tissues, …

Why Is Co-Infection With Influenza Virus And Bacteria So Difficult To Control?, Linda S. Cauley, Anthony T. Vella Jan 2015

Why Is Co-Infection With Influenza Virus And Bacteria So Difficult To Control?, Linda S. Cauley, Anthony T. Vella

UCHC Articles - Research

Influenza viruses are genetically labile pathogens which avoid immune detection by constantly changing their coat proteins. Most human infections are caused by mildly pathogenic viruses which rarely cause life-threatening disease in healthy people, but some individuals with a weakened immune system can experience severe complications. Widespread infections with highly pathogenic strains of influenza virus are less common, but have the potential to cause enormous death tolls among healthy adults if infection rates reach pandemic proportions. Increased virulence has been attributed to a variety of factors, including enhanced susceptibility to co-infection with common strains of bacteria. The mechanisms that facilitate dual …

Education Papers and Journal Articles

Background — Tumor necrosis factor–related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) has the ability to inhibit angiogenesis by inducing endothelial cell death, as well as being able to promote pro- angiogenic activity in vitro. These seemingly opposite effects make its role in ischemic disease unclear. Using Trail_/_ and wildtype mice, we sought to determine the role of TRAIL in angiogenesis and neovascularization following hindlimb ischemia.

Methods and Results — Reduced vascularization assessed by real-time 3-dimensional Vevo ultrasound imaging and CD31 staining was evident in Trail_/_ mice after ischemia, and associated with reduced capillary formation and increased apoptosis. Notably, adenoviral TRAIL administration significantly improved …

Deconstructing The Positive Behavioral Support Model And Replacing It With The Neo-Montessori Constructivist Intervention Model Or How Montessori Changed My Cold Data Driven Heart, Thomas D. Knestrict Jan 2015

Deconstructing The Positive Behavioral Support Model And Replacing It With The Neo-Montessori Constructivist Intervention Model Or How Montessori Changed My Cold Data Driven Heart, Thomas D. Knestrict

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

Positive behavioral supports (PBS) and the development of behaviorally oriented planning has become a ubiquitous paradigm in American schools. It is the preferred model for addressing behavioral issues with children as a means of preventing special education identification and placement. The effectiveness of this model has been well documented in peer-reviewed journals and shows an ability to change behaviors and improve academic achievement as measured by empirically designed assessments. However, the measurement of intellectual, moral and behavioral autonomy is seldom measured. Also, researchers from one perspective (Applied Behavioral Analysis) preclude other theoretical perspectives, to create the bulk of the evidence …

Differing Roles Of Autophagy In Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Impairment And Encephalitis With Implications For Morphine Co-Exposure, Seth M. Dever, Myosotys Rodriguez, Jessica Lapierre, Blair N. Costin, Nazira El-Hage Jan 2015

Differing Roles Of Autophagy In Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Impairment And Encephalitis With Implications For Morphine Co-Exposure, Seth M. Dever, Myosotys Rodriguez, Jessica Lapierre, Blair N. Costin, Nazira El-Hage

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

We investigated the role of autophagy in HIV-infected subjects with neurocognitive impairment (NCI) ± HIV encephalitis (HIVE), many of which had a history of polysubstance abuse/dependence, using post-mortem brain tissues to determine whether differences in autophagy related factors may be more associated with NCI or NCI-encephalitis. Using qRT-PCR, we detected significant differences in gene expression levels with SQSTM1, LAMP1 higher in HIV-infected subjects without NCI while ATG5, SQSTM1 were then lower in HIV infection/NCI and ATG7, SQSTM1 being higher in NCI-HIVE. Immunohistochemical labeling of these autophagy associated proteins (also including Beclin 1 and LC3B) in Iba1-positive microglial cells showed generally …
