Quantifying The Value Of Open Source Hardware Development, Joshua M. Pearce Jan 2015

Quantifying The Value Of Open Source Hardware Development, Joshua M. Pearce

Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications

With the maturation of digital manufacturing technologies like 3-D printing, a new paradigm is emerging of distributed manufacturing in both scientific equipment and consumer goods. Hardware released under free licenses is known as free and open source hardware (FOSH). The availability of these FOSH designs has a large value to those with access to digital manufacturing methods and particularly for scientists with needs for highly-customized low-volume production products. It is challenging to use traditional funding models to support the necessary investment of resources in FOSH development because of the difficulty in quantifying the value of the result. In order to …

Structure And Agency In Organizational Contexts Of Women In Stem, Sidouane Patcha Lum Jan 2015

Structure And Agency In Organizational Contexts Of Women In Stem, Sidouane Patcha Lum

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This research explores the extant literature on socio-cultural and institutional structures in STEM which accounts for women’s under-representation in these fields. It questions eight women in STEM’s awareness of these structures via interview sessions, and examines how they ‘negotiate’ their identities to thrive in ‘male-dominated’ fields. Participants’ awareness and shared experiences of these structures reflects an evolving society still ingrained in gender stereotypes that work to the detriment of women in STEM. In order to make meaning out this data, I apply standpoint theory to get into these women’s lives and explore the testable conclusions of traditional assumptions related to …

Electrochemical Processes In Microfluidics Systems Under Ac Electric Fields, Ran An Jan 2015

Electrochemical Processes In Microfluidics Systems Under Ac Electric Fields, Ran An

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Alternating current (AC) electric signal has been widely applied in microfluidic systems to induce AC electrokinetic behavior. AC electrokinetic phenomena including AC electrophoresis, AC dielectrophoresis, AC electroosmosis flow and AC electrothermal flow are widely applied in (bio)particle sorting, separation and concentration and micropumps. However, numbers of non-ideal AC electrokinetic behaviors have been reported: human erythrocyte deformation in AC dielectrophoresis system has been observed; flow reversal in AC electroosmosis flow pumps has also been reported. In this dissertation, a systematic study on human erythrocyte crenation in AC dielectrophoresis system was firstly conducted. Multiple possible physical mechanisms inducing cell crenation including temperature, …

Origin And Quantification Of Diffuse Co2 And H2s Emission At Crater Hills, Yellowstone National Park, Peipei Lin Jan 2015

Origin And Quantification Of Diffuse Co2 And H2s Emission At Crater Hills, Yellowstone National Park, Peipei Lin

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

At Crater Hills, a thermally-altered area adjoining the Sour Creek resurgent dome that is located within the Yellowstone Caldera, we characterized volatile emissions based upon our soil degassing measurements and soil gas chemistry in 2014 and fumarole gas chemistry in 2007 (Bergfeld et al., 2011). The investigation at Crater Hills on its diffuse gases isotopes and CO2, H2S emission improve our understanding on its gas emission mode – including total emission and spatial distribution, and contribute to a more accurate estimation of total CO2 emission at Yellowstone volcanic system. The total emission of CO2 interpolated by sequential Gaussian simulation method …

The Effects Of Fungicides And Regalia Tank Mixtures On Fray Leaf Spot In Nebraska Field Corn, 2014, J. D. Harbour, T. A. Jackson-Ziems

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The objective of the trial was to compare industry fungicide programs with the microbial Regalia Rx plus fungicide tank mixtures for gray leaf spot (GLS) efficacy. Corn was grown under normal, irrigated agronomic practices at the South Central Ag Lab near Clay Center, NE. Soils were a silt loam with 6.7 pH and 1.8 % organic matter. Reduced tillage was performed to the field prior to planting. Corn (DKC 64-83 RIB, moderately susceptible to GLS) was planted at approximately 34,000 seed/A on 20 May. Seven treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with six replications. . . . …

1.

  1. As animals move through their environments, they encounter a variety of substrates, which have important effects on their locomotor performance. Habitat modification can alter the types of substrates available for locomotion. In particular, many types of artificial substrates have been added to urban areas, but effects of these novel surfaces on animal locomotion are little known.
  2. In this study, we assessed locomotor performance of two Anolis lizard species (A. cristatellus and A. stratulus) on substrates that varied in inclination and surface roughness. Rough substrates represented the tree trunks and branches typically used in natural forest habitats, whereas …

Science Teacher Education In Australia: Initiatives And Challenges To Improve The Quality Of Teaching, David F. Treagust, Mihye Won, Jacinta Petersen, Georgie Wynne Jan 2015

Science Teacher Education In Australia: Initiatives And Challenges To Improve The Quality Of Teaching, David F. Treagust, Mihye Won, Jacinta Petersen, Georgie Wynne

Education Papers and Journal Articles

In this article, we describe how teachers in the Australian school system are educated to teach science and the different qualifications that teachers need to enter the profession. The latest comparisons of Australian students in international science assessments have brought about various accountability measures to improve the quality of science teachers at all levels. We discuss the issues and implications of government initiatives in preservice and early career teacher education programs, such as the implementation of national science curriculum, the stricter entry requirements to teacher education programs, an alternative pathway to teaching and the measure of effectiveness of teacher education …

Getting The Message: The Adaptive Potential Of Interpersonal Judgments, John D. Mayer, Kimberly G. Phillips, Amy Barry Jan 2015

Getting The Message: The Adaptive Potential Of Interpersonal Judgments, John D. Mayer, Kimberly G. Phillips, Amy Barry

Psychology

According to the Social Message Model, interpersonal judgments are transactions in which judges convey important social messages to the individuals they evaluate (the targets); targets can then respond to the judgments in more or less adaptive ways. We argue that judges’ opinions emerge from their current concerns, be it to promote their own well-being, or to foster group cohesion. Targets of judgments can best interpret the meaning of a judgment they receive by understanding the judge’s concerns, competence of the judge, and other qualities of the transaction. We suggest that judges and targets who are better able to reason about …

Joslyn, Qing-Song Liu, Aaron J. Tomarchio, Aron H. Lichtman, Dana E. Selley, Laura J. Sim-Selley, Benjamin F. Cravatt

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

The endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) is a retrograde lipid messenger that modulates synaptic function, neurophysiology, and behavior. 2-AG signaling is terminated by enzymatic hydrolysis—a reaction that is principally performed by monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL). MAGL is broadly expressed throughout the nervous system, and the contributions of different brain cell types to the regulation of 2-AG activityin vivo remain poorly understood. Here, we genetically dissect the cellular anatomy of MAGL-mediated 2-AG metabolism in the brain and show that neurons and astrocytescoordinately regulate 2-AG content and endocannabinoid-dependent forms of synaptic plasticity and behavior. We also find that astrocytic MAGL is mainly responsible …

Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend: An Autoethnographic Analysis Of Softball's Empowering Potential, Erin Lowe Jan 2015

Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend: An Autoethnographic Analysis Of Softball's Empowering Potential, Erin Lowe

Social Justice and Community Engagement

Due to dominant gender ideology, the body has become a site for personal and political power struggles and many everyday practices maintain the current power dynamics and the dominant ideology regarding gender hierarchy. These occurrences help to sustain an ideology that positions men and women in opposition, with the male role representing superiority and strength, and the female role representing inferiority and weakness. It is of interest to discover whether participation in certain sports can influence a larger ideological shift by empowering girls to reclaim control over their own bodies and view them as shining examples of their own competence …

The Portrayal Of Bullying Behaviour In Childhood: An Examination Of Canadian And American Mass Print Parenting Magazines From 2000 To 2015, Olivia Gabrielli Jan 2015

The Portrayal Of Bullying Behaviour In Childhood: An Examination Of Canadian And American Mass Print Parenting Magazines From 2000 To 2015, Olivia Gabrielli

Cultural Analysis and Social Theory Major Research Papers

As the social construction of bullying remains an important area of research, to date, much of the academic research has treated bullying within a psychological framework. This research project took a different approach towards bullying in childhood. From a sociological perspective, this study examined the portrayals of childhood bullying presented within various mass print parenting magazines. A social constructionist approach guided this media content analysis, while guiding questions were used to assess the data.

Results indicate that childhood bullies, victims, and bystanders are all affected by bullying episodes. It is characterized as a common issue, often occurring on the schoolyard …

‘Stranger Danger’: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Immigration And Refugee Protection Act, Matt Jantzi Jan 2015

‘Stranger Danger’: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Immigration And Refugee Protection Act, Matt Jantzi

Sociology Major Research Papers

This paper examines a major federal migrant policy within Canada, the

Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), as a discursive mechanism that I argue perpetuates racializing identities of immigrants and refugees. By performing a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of the IRPA, a number of themes are identified that construct immigrants and refugees in both racializing and securitizing terms. General themes from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms are then used to interrogate these identified themes within the IRPA. I conclude by suggesting that implementing and emphasizing humanitarian discourse within the IRPA can dislodge controversial security measures from operating within a …
