Abstract for article:

The authors describe a Wikipedia-based project designed for a graduate course introducing health economics to experienced healthcare professionals. The project allows such students to successfully write articles on niche topics in rapidly evolving health economics subspecialties. These students are given the opportunity to publish their completed projects in Wikipedia. Despite the lack of conventional classroom incentives, the authors have found that the students generally choose to enter their final projects intoWikipedia. The authors explore the motivators for this behavior from the perspective of human capital …

Dads On The Dotted Line: A Look At The In-Hospital Paternity Establishment Process, Cynthia Osborne, Daniel Dillon Feb 2015

Dads On The Dotted Line: A Look At The In-Hospital Paternity Establishment Process, Cynthia Osborne, Daniel Dillon

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

In the U.S., two out of five children are born to unmarried parents. These children do not have a legal father until paternity is established, a process completed by most families in the hospital at the time of the birth. Over the last 30 years, the percentage of unmarried parents voluntarily establishing paternity in the hospital has climbed considerably, driven in large part by a series of policy changes aimed at easing and incentivizing the process. Despite the apparent success of these policies, few have examined the mechanics of the paternity establishment process itself to understand whether it is functioning …

Representing The Educational Experiences Of Black Girls In A Juvenile Court School, Monique W. Morris Ed.D. Feb 2015

Representing The Educational Experiences Of Black Girls In A Juvenile Court School, Monique W. Morris Ed.D.

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Multiple, intersecting factors contribute to the over-representation of youth of color, including Black girls, in the juvenile justice system, and specifically, in confinement. This study examined the self-identified, educational experiences of Northern California Black girls in confinement. This phenomenological study found that Black girls in trouble with the law experience a history of exclusionary discipline and poor relationships with schools that are exacerbated by the absence of a learning environment in confinement that emphasizes their ability to build positive relationships with teachers and each other. The study also found that the use of exclusionary discipline was heightened in the juvenile …

Herbivory And The Resilience Of Caribbean Coral Reefs: Knowledge Gaps And Implications For Management, Thomas C. Adam, Deron E. Burkepile, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Michelle J. Paddack Feb 2015

Herbivory And The Resilience Of Caribbean Coral Reefs: Knowledge Gaps And Implications For Management, Thomas C. Adam, Deron E. Burkepile, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Michelle J. Paddack

Biological Sciences

Herbivory is a key process on coral reefs that can facilitate reef-building corals by excluding algae that otherwise negatively impact coral settlement, growth, and survivorship. Over the last several decades, coral cover on Caribbean reefs has declined precipitously. On many reefs, large structurally complex corals have been replaced by algae and other non-reef-building organisms, resulting in the collapse of physical structure and the loss of critical ecosystem services. The drivers of coral decline on Caribbean reefs are complex and vary among locations. On many reefs, populations of key herbivores have been greatly reduced by disease and overfishing, and this has …

The Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor Ric-8a Induces Domain Separation And Ras Domain Plasticity In Gαi1, Ned Van Eps, Celestine J. Thomas, Wayne L. Hubbell, Stephen R. Sprang Feb 2015

The Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor Ric-8a Induces Domain Separation And Ras Domain Plasticity In Gαi1, Ned Van Eps, Celestine J. Thomas, Wayne L. Hubbell, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Heterotrimeric G proteins are activated by exchange of GDP for GTP at the G protein alpha subunit (Gα), most notably by G protein-coupled transmembrane receptors. Ric-8A is a soluble cytoplasmic protein essential for embryonic development that acts as both a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) and a chaperone for Gα subunits of the i, q, and 12/13 classes. Previous studies demonstrated that Ric-8A stabilizes a dynamically disordered state of nucleotide-free Gα as the catalytic intermediate for nucleotide exchange, but no information was obtained on the structures involved or the magnitude of the structural fluctuations. In the present study, site-directed spin …

Analyses Of Alternatively Processed Genes In Ciliates Provide Insights Into The Origins Of Scrambled Genomes And May Provide A Mechanism For Speciation, Feng Gao, Scott W. Roy, Laura A. Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Chromosome rearrangements occur in a variety of eukaryotic life cycles, including during the development of the somatic macronuclear genome in ciliates. Previous work on the phyllopharyngean ciliate Chilodonella uncinata revealed that macronuclear β-tubulin and protein kinase gene families share alternatively processed germ line segments nested within divergent regions. To study genome evolution in this ciliate further, we characterized two additional alternatively processed gene families from two cryptic species of the ciliate morphospecies C. uncinata: those encoding histidine acid phosphatase protein (Hap) and leishmanolysin family protein (Lei). Analyses of the macronuclear Hap and Lei sequences reveal that each gene family consists …

Background: Brucellosis is a common zoonotic disease and remains a major burden in both human and domesticated animal populations worldwide. Few geographic studies of human Brucellosis have been conducted, especially in China. Inner Mongolia of China is considered an appropriate area for the study of human Brucellosis due to its provision of a suitable environment for animals most responsible for human Brucellosis outbreaks. Methods: The aggregated numbers of human Brucellosis cases from 1951 to 2005 at the municipality level, and the yearly numbers and incidence rates of human Brucellosis cases from 2006 to 2010 at the county level were collected. …

Use And Misuse Of Material Transfer Agreements: Lessons In Proportionality From Research, Repositories, And Litigation, Tania M. Bubela, Jenilee Guebert, Amrita Mishra Feb 2015

Use And Misuse Of Material Transfer Agreements: Lessons In Proportionality From Research, Repositories, And Litigation, Tania M. Bubela, Jenilee Guebert, Amrita Mishra

Office of the Provost

Material transfer agreements exist to facilitate the exchange of materials and associated data between researchers as well as to protect the interests of the researchers and their institutions. But this dual mandate can be a source of frustration for researchers, creating administrative burdens and slowing down collaborations. We argue here that in most cases in pre-competitive research, a simple agreement would suffice; the more complex agreements and mechanisms for their negotiation should be reserved for cases where the risks posed to the institution and the potential commercial value of the research reagents is high.

Shbg Gene Polymorphism (Rs1799941) Associates With Metabolic Syndrome In Children And Adolescents, Marquitta J. White, Fatih Eren, Deniz Agirbasli, Scott M. Williams, Mehmet Agirbasli

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex disorder characterized by coexistence of several cardiometabolic (CM) factors, i.e. hyperlipidemia, obesity, high blood pressure and insulin resistance. The presence of MetS is strongly associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The syndrome was originally defined as an adult disorder, but MetS has become increasingly recognized in children and adolescents.

Methods: Genetic variants influence biological components common to the CM factors that comprise MetS. We investigated single locus associations between six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), previously shown to modulate lipid or sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels, with MetS in a Turkish …
