Gender Differences In Depression Across Parental Roles, Kevin Shafer, Garrett T. Pace Feb 2015

Gender Differences In Depression Across Parental Roles, Kevin Shafer, Garrett T. Pace

Faculty Publications

Prior research has focused on the relationship between parenthood and psychological well-being, with mixed results. Some studies have also addressed potential gender differences in this relationship, again yielding varied findings. One reason may be methodological choices pursued in these studies, including the lack of focus on combined parental roles (for example, biological parent and stepparent). The authors used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 (N = 6,276) and multinomial treatment models to address how combined roles influence depressive symptoms in mothers and fathers. Further, they explored potential gender differences. Their results indicated that having multiple parental roles …

A Semantic Network For Modeling Biological Knowledge In Multiple Databases, Jeffrey Stone, Xindong Wu, Marc Greenblatt

Communications of the IIMA

We have developed a semantic network of biological terminology to aid in the retrieval and integration of biological information from a variety of disparate information sources. Our semantic network strives to provide a categorization of biological concepts and relationships among these concepts. The semantic network will impart a knowledge structure through which computers can "reason " and draw conclusions about biological data objects and will provide a federated view of the many disparate databases of interest to biologists. In the development of our system, we have included the concepts from several established controlled vocabularies, chief among them being the National …

The Magic Lantern And The Cinema: Adult Schools, Educational Settlements And Secularisation In Britain, C. 1900-1950, Mark Freeman

Quaker Studies

This article examines the impact of an increasingly secularised demand for adult education in the first half of the twentieth century on two movements with which Quakers were closely associated: the adult schools and the educational settlements. It argues that the educational settlements, originally established to extend and enhance the work of the adult schools, were better able to accommodate to a secularised climate, and this ensured their survival. Neither movement flourished in the same way as the secular Workers' Educational Association and adult education provided by local education authorities, and this reflected the weakness of religious adult education in …

Baguio, Frederic A. Gronau

Manuscripts

Being operations officer in a medical supply depot in the Philippines was one job I thoroughly enjoyed, for it kept me very busy keeping a check on all the depot's operating activities. In order to do this, I had to make frequent visits to all parts of the installation to see first hand how the work was progressing. It was during one of these trips that our civilian chief storekeeper, Manual Picardo, stopped me, pointed to the sky and said, "Baguio."

Long-Term Impacts Of Disturbance On Nitrogen-Cycling Bacteria In A New England Salt Marsh, Anne E. Bernhard, Courtney Dwyer, Adrian Idrizi, Geoffrey Bender, Rachel Zwick Feb 2015

Long-Term Impacts Of Disturbance On Nitrogen-Cycling Bacteria In A New England Salt Marsh, Anne E. Bernhard, Courtney Dwyer, Adrian Idrizi, Geoffrey Bender, Rachel Zwick

Biology Faculty Publications

Recent studies on the impacts of disturbance on microbial communities indicate communities show differential responses to disturbance, yet our understanding of how different microbial communities may respond to and recover from disturbance is still rudimentary. We investigated impacts of tidal restriction followed by tidal restoration on abundance and diversity of denitrifying bacteria, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) in New England salt marshes by analyzing nirS and bacterial and archaeal amoA genes, respectively. TRFLP analysis of nirS and betaproteobacterial amoA genes revealed significant differences between restored and undisturbed marshes, with the greatest differences detected in …

Clumped Isotope Signals Of Biogenic And Non-Biogenic Carbonates, Deniz Atasoy Feb 2015

Clumped Isotope Signals Of Biogenic And Non-Biogenic Carbonates, Deniz Atasoy

Open Access Theses

The δ18O of carbonates is most one of the most popular tools used in both marine and terrestrial environments to reconstruct past climate and understand diagenesis. The major problem with the use of the δ18O is that the value within a carbonate is dependent both upon temperature and the δ18O of the precipitating fluid. This dilemma is potentially solvable using clumped signatures reported as Δ47 which is a direct measure of the temperature of formation only. This thesis consists of three projects all of which have applied the clumped isotope method. The common thread of all of these projects is …

© 2015 Sussan et al. Electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) have experienced sharp increases in popularity over the past five years due to many factors, including aggressive marketing, increased restrictions on conventional cigarettes, and a perception that E-cigs are healthy alternatives to cigarettes. Despite this perception, studies on health effects in humans are extremely limited and in vivo animal models have not been generated. Presently, we determined that E-cig vapor contains 7x1011 free radicals per puff. To determine whether E-cig exposure impacts pulmonary responses in mice, we developed an inhalation chamber for E-cig exposure. Mice that were exposed to E-cig vapor contained …

A Heuristic Evolutionary Method For The Complementary Cell Suppression Problem, Hira B. Herrington Feb 2015

A Heuristic Evolutionary Method For The Complementary Cell Suppression Problem, Hira B. Herrington

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Cell suppression is a common method for disclosure avoidance used to protect sensitive information in two-dimensional tables where row and column totals are published along with non-sensitive data. In tables with only positive cell values, cell suppression has been demonstrated to be non-deterministic NP-hard. Therefore, finding more efficient methods for producing low-cost solutions is an area of active research.

Genetic algorithms (GA) have shown to be effective in finding good solutions to the cell suppression problem. However, these methods have the shortcoming that they tend to produce a large proportion of infeasible solutions. The primary goal of this research was …

Modeling Neurovascular Coupling From Clustered Parameter Sets For Multimodal Eeg-Nirs, M. Tanveer Talukdar, H. Robert Frost, Solomon G. G. Diamond Feb 2015

Modeling Neurovascular Coupling From Clustered Parameter Sets For Multimodal Eeg-Nirs, M. Tanveer Talukdar, H. Robert Frost, Solomon G. G. Diamond

Dartmouth Scholarship

Despite significant improvements in neuroimaging technologies and analysis methods, the fundamental relationship between local changes in cerebral hemodynamics and the underlying neural activity remains largely unknown. In this study, a data driven approach is proposed for modeling this neurovascular coupling relationship from simultaneously acquired electroencephalographic (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopic (NIRS) data. The approach uses gamma transfer functions to map EEG spectral envelopes that reflect time-varying power variations in neural rhythms to hemodynamics measured with NIRS during median nerve stimulation. The approach is evaluated first with simulated EEG-NIRS data and then by applying the method to experimental EEG-NIRS data measured from …

Protein Composition And Movements Of Membrane Swellings Associated With Primary Cilia, Ashraf M. Mohieldin, Hanan S. Haymour, Shao T. Lo, Wissam A. Aboualaiwi, Kimberly F. Atkinson, Christopher J. Ward, Min Gao, Oliver Wessely, Surya M. Nauli

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Dysfunction of many ciliary proteins has been linked to a list of diseases, from cystic kidney to obesity and from hypertension to mental retardation. We previously proposed that primary cilia are unique communication organelles that function as microsensory compartments that house mechanosensory molecules. Here we report that primary cilia exhibit membrane swellings, which based on their unique ultrastructure and motility, could be mechanically regulated by fluid-shear stress. Together with the ultrastructure analysis of the bulb, which contains monosialodihexosylganglioside (GM3), our results show that ciliary membrane swelling has a distinctive set of functional proteins, including GM3 synthase (GM3S), bicaudal-c1 (Bicc1) and …

To Those Who Know A Hurting Child, Tara Boer

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"Current research tells us that kids who witness or experience hard things actually lose some ability to make good choices. It’s not that they won’t or don’t want to make the good choice…sometimes they just can’t. When kids are chronically exposed to trauma the part of their brain that helps them with language, flexibility, and mood regulation actually shrinks. ... The good news is that God made our brains so thoughtfully that they can actually grow and change."

Somatic Experiencing: Using Interoception And Proprioception As Core Elements Of Trauma Therapy, Peter Payne, Peter A. A. Levine, Mardi A. Crane-Godreau

Dartmouth Scholarship

Here we present a theory of human trauma and chronic stress, based on the practice of Somatic Experiencing(®) (SE), a form of trauma therapy that emphasizes guiding the client's attention to interoceptive, kinesthetic, and proprioceptive experience. SE™ claims that this style of inner attention, in addition to the use of kinesthetic and interoceptive imagery, can lead to the resolution of symptoms resulting from chronic and traumatic stress. This is accomplished through the completion of thwarted, biologically based, self-protective and defensive responses, and the discharge and regulation of excess autonomic arousal. We present this theory through a composite case study of …

Kanick, Pablo A. Valdés, Michael Jermyn, Brian C. Wilson, David W. Roberts, Keith D. Paulsen, Frederic Leblond

Dartmouth Scholarship

A diffuse imaging method is presented that enables wide-field estimation of the depth of fluorescent molecular markers in turbid media by quantifying the deformation of the detected fluorescence spectra due to the wavelength-dependent light attenuation by overlying tissue. This is achieved by measuring the ratio of the fluorescence at two wavelengths in combination with normalization techniques based on diffuse reflectance measurements to evaluate tissue attenuation variations for different depths. It is demonstrated that fluorescence topography can be achieved up to a 5 mm depth using a near-infrared dye with millimeter depth accuracy in turbid media having optical properties representative of …

Coherent Digital Holographic Adaptive Optics, Changgeng Liu Feb 2015

Coherent Digital Holographic Adaptive Optics, Changgeng Liu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A new type of adaptive optics (AO) based on the principles of digital holography (DH) is proposed and developed for the use in wide-field and confocal retinal imaging. Digital holographic adaptive optics (DHAO) dispenses with the wavefront sensor and wavefront corrector of the conventional AO system. DH is an emergent imaging technology that gives direct numerical access to the phase of the optical field, thus allowing precise control and manipulation of the optical field. Incorporation of DH in an ophthalmic imaging system can lead to versatile imaging capabilities at substantially reduced complexity and cost of the instrument. A typical conventional …
