Level 3

Aim: The educational approach towards practice placement education in health-related disciplines has changed in recent years. The use of collaborative or peer learning models has increased, associated with positive effects on desired outcomes such as learning, competence and reflective practice. At present, there is little published literature on the implementation or use of such models in dietetics practice placement education. The aim of this study was to conduct a pilot study of a collaborative peer learning 2 students to 1 educator (2:1 model). Methods: Experienced practice placement educators from four clinical sites in the discipline of dietetics in the Republic …

Evaluation Of Desiccated And Deformed Diaspores From Natural Building Materials, Tamas Henn, Robert Pal Mar 2015

Evaluation Of Desiccated And Deformed Diaspores From Natural Building Materials, Tamas Henn, Robert Pal

Biological Sciences

With the increasing sophistication of paleoethnobotanical methods, it is now possible to reconstruct new aspects of the day-to-day life of past peoples, and, ultimately, gain information about their cultivated plants, land-use practices, architecture, diet, and trade. Reliable identification of plant remains, however, remains essential to the study of paleoethno-botany, and there is still much to learn about precise identification. This paper describes and evaluates the most frequent types of deformed desiccated diaspores revealed from adobe bricks used in buildings in Southwestern Hungary that were built primarily between 1850 and 1950. A total of 24,634 diaspores were recovered from 333.05 kg …

Developing Burrowing As A Non-Evoked Readout Assessment For Novel Analgesic Drug Efficacy, Kayla Lindros, Denise Giuvelis, Ed Bilsky Mar 2015

Developing Burrowing As A Non-Evoked Readout Assessment For Novel Analgesic Drug Efficacy, Kayla Lindros, Denise Giuvelis, Ed Bilsky

Neuroscience Student Research Posters

Traditional drug development efforts to diminish the problem of chronic pain rely heavily on pain-evoked assays that can yield false positives, leading to confounding assessments of novel drugs. To avoid this, we are looking at burrowing as a novel readout assessment of analgesic efficacy. Preliminary data shows that induction of post-surgical pain reduces this innate behavior by about 35%. In attempt to increase this number, we tested a variety of additional parameters. Blue pads, placed at the bottom of each chamber in order to reduce the sound made when gravel is displaced, increased baseline amounts roughly 40%. Conversely, neither sex …

I know it's sometimes helpful to have that kind of space to get things done, and I'm sure you made real progress.

Distinct Amino Acid Compositional Requirements For Formation And Maintenance Of The [Psi+] Prion In Yeast, Kyle S. Maclea, Kacy R. Paul, Zobaida Ben-Musa, Jenifer E. Shattuck, Margaret Gruca, Eric D. Ross Mar 2015

Distinct Amino Acid Compositional Requirements For Formation And Maintenance Of The [Psi+] Prion In Yeast, Kyle S. Maclea, Kacy R. Paul, Zobaida Ben-Musa, Jenifer E. Shattuck, Margaret Gruca, Eric D. Ross

Life Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Multiple yeast prions have been identified that result from the structural conversion of proteins into a self-propagating amyloid form. Amyloid-based prion activity in yeast requires a series of discrete steps. First, the prion protein must form an amyloid nucleus that can recruit and structurally convert additional soluble proteins. Subsequently, maintenance of the prion during cell division requires fragmentation of these aggregates to create new heritable propagons. For the Saccharomyces cerevisiae prion protein Sup35, these different activities are encoded by different regions of the Sup35 prion domain. An N-terminal glutamine/asparagine-rich nucleation domain is required for nucleation and fiber growth, while an …

Natural And Anthropogenic Processes Contributing To Metal Enrichment In Surface Soils Of Central Pennsylvania, A. M.L. Kraepiel, Ashlee L.D. Dere, E. M. Herndon, Susan L. Brantley

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Metals in soils may positively or negatively affect plants as well as soil micro-organisms and mesofauna, depending on their abundance and bioavailability. Atmospheric deposition and biological uplift commonly result in metal enrichment in surface soils, but the relative importance of these processes is not always resolved. Here, we used an integrated approach to study the cycling of phosphorus and a suite of metals from the soil to the canopy (and back) in a temperate watershed. The behavior of elements in these surface soils fell into three categories. First, Al, Fe, V, Co, and Cr showed little to no enrichment in …

Noses In Books: Orientation, Immersion, And Paratext, Cynthia N. Malone Mar 2015

Noses In Books: Orientation, Immersion, And Paratext, Cynthia N. Malone

English Faculty Publications

Paratextual aids to reading in medieval codex books, printed codex books, and Kindle ebooks are compared. Medieval scribes designed paratextual elements that enhanced diverse reading practices, from lectio divina to scholarly textual study. Printers adopted and standardized many elements of paratext, and contemporary readers depend on these elements to navigate printed books. Because familiar paratextual aids to reading are less visible in Kindle ebooks, readers find those ebooks harder to navigate. Development of effective ebook paratext must take into account the needs and practices of readers.

Towards Human-Like Bimanual Movements In Anthropomorphic Robots: A Nonlinear Optimization Approach, E. Costa E Silva, M. F. Costa, J .P. Ara?Jo, D. Machado, L. Louro, W. Erlhagen

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Previously we have presented a model for generating human-like arm and hand movements on an unimanual anthropomorphic robot involved in human-robot collaboration tasks. The present paper aims to extend our model in order to address the generation of human-like bimanual movement sequences which are challenged by scenarios cluttered with obstacles. Movement planning involves large scale nonlinear constrained optimization problems which are solved using the IPOPT solver. Simulation studies show that the model generates feasible and realistic hand trajectories for action sequences involving the two hands. The computational costs involved in the planning allow for real-time human robot-interaction. A qualitative analysis …

Evolution Of Translation Surfaces In Euclidean 3-Space E3, H. N. Abd-Ellah Mar 2015

Evolution Of Translation Surfaces In Euclidean 3-Space E3, H. N. Abd-Ellah

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Geometry and kinematics have been intimately connected in their historical evolution and, although it is currently less fashionable, the further development of such connections is crucial to many computer-aided design and manufacturing. In this paper, the evolution of the translation surfaces and their generating curves in E3 are investigated. Integrability conditions of the Gauss-Weingarten equations are obtained. Kinematics of moving frame fields associated to these surfaces are described. The evolution equations of the Christoffel symbols, the second fundamental quantities and Gauss-Codazzi equations for the motion are established. Thus, the evolution equations of the curvatures in terms of their intrinsic geometric …

Analysis And Control Of A Three-Dimensional Autonomous Chaotic System, Abdollah Gholizadeh, Hassan Saberi Nik, Amin Jajarmi Mar 2015

Analysis And Control Of A Three-Dimensional Autonomous Chaotic System, Abdollah Gholizadeh, Hassan Saberi Nik, Amin Jajarmi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, a novel three-dimensional (3D) autonomous chaotic system is investigated, which displays complicated dynamical behaviors. Basic dynamical properties are analyzed by means of phase portraits and equilibria. Also, an optimal control law is designed for the novel chaotic system, based on the Pontryagin minimum principle (PMP). Furthermore, an adaptive and feedback control law is introduced to stabilize the new chaotic system with unknown parameters. The adaptive control results are established using the Lyapunov stability theory. Numerical simulations are included to demonstrate the efficiency and high accuracy of the proposed method.

Applications Of First Integral Method To Some Complex Nonlinear Evolution Systems, Marwan Alquran, Qutaibeh Katatbeh, Banan Al-Shrida

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The aim of the present paper is to study nonlinear system of partial differential equations (PDEs) involving both complexand real-valued unknown functions. We shall extend the use of the first integral method ”based on the theory of commutative algebra” to construct new solutions to the coupled Higgs field equations, the Davey-Sterwatson (DS) equations and the coupled Klein-Gordon- Zakharov equations. All the algebraic computations in this work are performed using Mathematica software.

A Convenient Ready-To-Use Algorithm For A Conditional Quantile Estimator, Piotr Kulczycki, Małgorzata Charytanowicz, Antoni Leon Dawidowicz

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper contains a complete procedure for calculating the value of a conditional quantile estimator. The concept is based on the nonparametric kernel estimator method, which frees the algorithm from the random variables’ distributions. The procedure was worked out in a ready-to-use form – specific formulas for functions and the parameter used were given. The practical implementation of this method is very simple, and its computational complexity is linear with respect to random sample size as well as the dimension of conditioning variable. Thanks to a clear, near intuitive interpretation it can easily be modified or generalized depending on the …

A Genetic Algorithm To Solve The Subset Sum Problem Based On Parallel Computing, Lei Li, Kai Zhao, Zuwen Ji Mar 2015

A Genetic Algorithm To Solve The Subset Sum Problem Based On Parallel Computing, Lei Li, Kai Zhao, Zuwen Ji

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The subset sum problem is to find subsets in a given number set, meanwhile number sum of the subset is equal to appointed value. It is a classical NP-complete problem in graph theory. It can be solved by the electronic computer in exponential time. In this paper, we consider a DNA procedure for solving the subset sum problem in the Adleman-Lipton model. The procedure works in O(n) steps for the subset sum problem of an undirected graph with n vertices. The innovation of the procedure is the ingenious choice of the vertices strands’ length, which can get the solution of …

Non-Standard Crank-Nicholson Method For Solving The Variable Order Fractional Cable Equation, N. H. Sweilam, T. A. Assiri Mar 2015

Non-Standard Crank-Nicholson Method For Solving The Variable Order Fractional Cable Equation, N. H. Sweilam, T. A. Assiri

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, a non-standard Crank-Nicholson finite difference method (NSCN) is presented. NSCN is used to study numerically the variable-order fractional Cable equation, where the variable order fractional derivatives are described in the Riemann- Liouville and the Gr¨unwald-Letnikov sense. The stability analysis of the proposed methods is given by a recently proposed procedure similar to the standard John von Neumann stability analysis. The reliability and efficiency of the proposed approach are demonstrated by some numerical experiments. It is found that NSCN is preferable than the standard Crank-Nicholson finite difference method (SCN).

A Note On Certain Qualitative Properties Of A Second Order Linear Differential System, Cemil Tunc, Osman Tunc

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this note, two theorems are presented concerning the well known second order linear differential system ¨X +a(t)X =P(t). While the results are not new, the proofs presented simplify previous works since the Gronwall inequality is avoided which is the usual case. The technique of proof involves the integral test and examples are included to illustrate the results.

Computer Malicious Executables Detection Based On Real-Valued Negative Selection Algorithm, Jinquan Zeng Mar 2015

Computer Malicious Executables Detection Based On Real-Valued Negative Selection Algorithm, Jinquan Zeng

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

How to detect computer malicious executables is an important research direction of computer security, especially, unknown malicious executables and new variants. Inspired by biological immune systems, a based on real-valued negative selection algorithm approach to detect malicious executables is proposed in this paper, which is referred to MEDRNS. In order to avoid detectors covering self space, some of benign executables are used to build the profile of the system, and then based on the built profile of the system, the detectors are generated. At the same time, using the variable-sized self radius to represent the self space, detectors have the …

An Increase In Beach Reconstruction Projects May Mean A Decrease In Property Rights: The Need For A Multi-Factor Balancing Test When Protecting Waterfront Property, Amy Forman Mar 2015

An Increase In Beach Reconstruction Projects May Mean A Decrease In Property Rights: The Need For A Multi-Factor Balancing Test When Protecting Waterfront Property, Amy Forman

Washington and Lee Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment

In recent years, many states have struggled to come up with an adequate solution to the negative effects of climate change, specifically rising sea levels and severe storms. The most common and successful method of protection, erecting barriers on the waterfront, not only raises its own environmental concerns, but also forces the government to invade on a homeowner’s property rights for the sake of protecting the beach. Recent cases such as the Borough of Harvey Cedars v. Karan, illustrate that when courts abandon traditional property rights, it becomes easier to implement protective measures and save their waterfront properties. This protection …

Deletion Of Shank1 Has Minimal Effects On The Molecular Composition And Function Of Glutamatergic Afferent Postsynapses In The Mouse Inner Ear, Jeremy P. Braude, Sarath Vijayakumar, Katherine Baumgarner, Rebecca Laurine, Timothy A. Jones, Sherri M. Jones, Sonya J. Pyott Mar 2015

Pyott

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Abstract

Shank proteins (1-3) are considered the master organizers of glutamatergic postsynaptic densities in the central nervous system, and the genetic deletion of either Shank1, 2, or 3 results in altered composition, form, and strength of glutamatergic postsynapses. To investigate the contribution of Shank proteins to glutamatergic afferent synapses of the inner ear and especially cochlea, we used immunofluorescence and quantitative real time PCR to determine the expression of Shank1, 2, and 3 in the cochlea. Because we found evidence for expression of Shank1 but not 2 and 3, we investigated the morphology, composition, and function of afferent postsynaptic densities …
