Increasing The Use Of Trauma-Sensitive Lens For School Case Managers: A Training Assessment, Breanne Thomas, Becky Scott, David K. Pooler Mar 2015

Increasing The Use Of Trauma-Sensitive Lens For School Case Managers: A Training Assessment, Breanne Thomas, Becky Scott, David K. Pooler

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

This manuscript reports on a study to determine the efficacy of a one-day training for school-based case managers on the impact of trauma on students, utilizing a trauma sensitive lens in schools, and using various trauma assessments and screens. The one-day training was presented to 25 case managers providing direct social services in schools. We gathered data at three points in time (pretest, post-test, and post-test one month after training) and found statistically different scores at each point in time. We discuss the implications for training school based professionals.

Polarization-induced weak ferromagnetism has been predicted a few years back in compounds MTiO3 (M = Fe, Mn, Ni) (Fennie, 2008). We set out to stabilize this metastable, distorted perovskite structure by growing NiTiO3 epitaxially on sapphire Al2O3 (001) substrate, and to control the polar and magnetic properties via strain. Epitaxial Ni1 - xTi1 - yO3 films of different Ni/Ti ratios and thicknesses were deposited on Al2O3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition at different temperatures, and characterized using several techniques. The effect of film thickness, deposition temperature, and film stoichiometry on lattice strain, film structure, and physical properties was investigated. Our …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

During the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Animal Health Monitoring System’s (NAHMS) 2007–2008 beef study, producers from 24 states were offered the opportunity to evaluate their animals for internal parasites and for overall responses to treatment with anthelmintics. A lapse of 45 d was required between initial sampling and any previous treatments. Choice of anthelmintic (oral benzimidazoles, and both injectable and pour-on endectocides) was at the discretion of the producer so as not to alter the local control programs. Fresh fecal samples were collected from 20 animals, or from the entire group if less than 20, then randomly …

Scientific Teaching: Defining A Taxonomy Of Observable Practices, Brian A. Couch, Tanya L. Brown, Tyler J. Schelpat, Mark J. Graham, Jennifer K. Knight

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Over the past several decades, numerous reports have been published advocating for changes to undergraduate science education. These national calls inspired the formation of the National Academies Summer Institutes on Undergraduate Education in Biology (SI), a group of regional workshops to help faculty members learn and implement interactive teaching methods. The SI curriculum promotes a pedagogical framework called Scientific Teaching (ST), which aims to bring the vitality of modern research into the classroom by engaging students in the scientific discovery process and using student data to inform the ongoing development of teaching methods. With the spread of ST, the need …

We Are Family? Examining Parental Leave And Non-Normative Parents In The United States, Samantha Odyniec

DePaul Journal of Women, Gender and the Law

This article will examine parental leave and the non-normative parent. Parental leave in the United States is currently a hot-button issue. With so much focus on the “Opt-Out” Generation, “Leaning In,” and whether women can in fact “have it all,” the issues faced by parents who are not educated, upper class, and in a heterosexual marriage relationship with the biological father are often ignored in the discussion of how the law is lacking. Instead, the discussion has focused on women at the top echelon of employment. In doing this, a large segment of the population is being completely left out …

Mitochondrial Dna Suggests A Western Eurasian Origin For Ancient (Proto-) Bulgarians, D V. Nesheva, S Karachanak-Yankova, M Lari, Y Yordanov, A Galabov, David Caramelli, Draga Toncheva

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Ancient (proto-) Bulgarians have long been thought to as a Turkic population. However, evidence found in the past three decades show that this is not the case. Until now, this evidence does not include ancient mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. In order to fill this void, we have collected human remains from the VIII-X century AD located in three necropolises in Bulgaria: Nojarevo (Silistra region) and Monastery of Mostich (Shumen region), both in Northeast Bulgaria and Tuhovishte (Satovcha region) in Southwest Bulgaria. The phylogenetic analysis of 13 ancient DNA samples (extracted from teeth) identified 12 independent haplotypes, which we further classified …

Shifts In Attack Behavior Of An Important Kelp Forest Predator Within Marine Reserves, J. S. Berriman, M. C. Kay, D. C. Reed, A. Rassweiler, D. A. Goldstein, William G. Wright

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Marine reserves have become increasingly valuable tools with which to manage ecosystems. These reserves consistently restore populations of top predators, often reducing availability of their favored prey. We hypothesized that such prey reduction in reserves causes protected predators to alter their attack behavior to include less palatable prey, potentially amplifying top-down effects on community structure. To test this hypothesis, we presented the relatively unpalatable sea hare Aplysia californica to freely foraging spiny lobsters Panulirus interruptus in 4 marine no-take reserves, each paired with an adjacent fished area. We found that lobsters only attacked sea hares inside reserves, where lobster density …

Publications

An evaluation of Zequanox® (a naturally derived biopesticide that is non-toxic to humans and other aquatic life and selectively kills dreissenid mussels) for controlling zebra mussel infestations in shallow-water habitats in lakes was conducted at Deep Quarry Lake in DuPage County, Illinois during summer 2012 and 2013. During the 2012 trial, three sets of paired 24-m² treatment and control sites were established within the lake, while a single 324-m² treatment site was established for the 2013 trial. Zequanox was applied to treatment plots, contained using PVC barrier curtains, and barriers were removed during the morning following application. Zebra mussel mortality …

Death In Life: Approaches To The Contemporary Denial Of Death In Theoretical & Experimental Psychology And Continental Philosophy, Madeline R. Runstrom Mar 2015

Death In Life: Approaches To The Contemporary Denial Of Death In Theoretical & Experimental Psychology And Continental Philosophy, Madeline R. Runstrom

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Using an interdisciplinary approach, this thesis explores the theme of death in life. This thesis particularly examines the work of Phillipe Ariès, Ernest Becker, Terror Management theorists (TMT), Martin Heidegger, and Friedrich Nietzsche. These thinkers are united in their diagnosis of a severe and unhealthy contemporary denial of death. Death has never been repressed as thoroughly as it is in the current era in western culture, to the point that the exclusion of death may well be the characteristic that centrally distinguishes, and threatens the welfare of, our age. However, as I show in Chapter One, in a number of …

Tallgrass Prairie Vegetation Response To Spring Fires And Bison Grazing, Stephen L. Winter, Brady W. Allred, Karen R. Hickman, Samuel D. Fuhlendorf Mar 2015

Tallgrass Prairie Vegetation Response To Spring Fires And Bison Grazing, Stephen L. Winter, Brady W. Allred, Karen R. Hickman, Samuel D. Fuhlendorf

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Spring fires in tallgrass prairie can create environmental conditions conducive to plant growth in the subsequent growing season. Following fires, burned areas can also be attractive to grazing animals such as bison (Bison bison). Sustained grazing activity within recently burned areas can alter vegetation structure relative to nearby landscape patches that haven’t burned recently. In 2007, we collected data on bison grazing activity, vegetation structure, and the growth and reproduction of a perennial forb, Arnoglossum plantagineum, in Oklahoma tallgrass prairie. We compared these variables in landscape patches that had burned in the spring of 2007 to measurements …
