This dissertation elucidates how HANDS later forms a multi-ethnic identity in its production that moved away from a single ethnic Chinese performing art group. This study touches on issues of culture and intercultural exchanges on the premise that HANDS is based in Malaysia, a country that is pluralistic …

Student Works (2010-2019)
Scientists and other scholars need information to support their research activities. This information must be of high quality for them to perform their tasks effectively. Journals are one of the communication media used for disseminating scholarly information. While there are international indexing services that rank the quality of journals, these indexes have limited applicability to local journals or those in local languages. Using the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD) as a case, this study examined the quality, trust, and usability of nine agricultural journals in Indonesia. It also produced journal rankings and compare the ranking resulted from …

Melodic dictation is an important part of most university-level aural skills curriculum. This skill is well esteemed for its ability to facilitate students translate the pitches and rhythms that they hear and visualize them on manuscript. Studies attempting to discover trends in strategy usage of successful dictation takers, however, have not yielded meaningful results. This study attempts to discover whether the use of familiar melodies in interval identification is effective for undergraduate music majors. Control and experimental groups consisted of 60 random samples in each group. Control group will receive no melodic reference to identify intervals, while the treatment group …

Influence Of Timurid Architecture On Safavid And Mughal Mosques In India / Maryam Khazaee, Khazaee Maryam
Student Works (2010-2019)
Before and after the advent of Islam, Persian architecture was heavily influential towards the structures of the Indian subcontinent. During the Mughal era (1526-1707AD), bilateral relations between Persia and India reached the highest level in all aspects of life. Even though the Mughal period was contemporaneous of the Safavid (1524-1736), many historical evidences hold that Mughal architecture was mostly influenced by the Timurid dynasty (1370-1526) more than Safavid architecture, with Timurid architecture serving as a prototype for both Safavid and Mughal styles. The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of Timurid architectural elements (1370-1525) in Mughal …

Chasing The ‘Hounds Of Hell’: Howard Thurman’S Jesus And The Disinherited As A Curriculum For Racial Justice And Reconciliation, Sandra Richards Mayo
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
This essay explores the implications of the Trayvon Martin case for educators who must contend with the complexities of race in the context of schooling. With the assumption that race continues to function as an important category in social arrangements, this essay addresses the following questions: What is the role of race and racial stereotyping in educational disparities? How can educators work purposely toward a curriculum of racial justice and reconciliation? Drawing on the work of African American theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman, this essay argues that new approaches to social justice education should address both the extrapersonal …

The Good Shepherd: Lessons For Teacher Education, Scott Key
The Good Shepherd: Lessons For Teacher Education, Scott Key
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Across the continent, the demand for increased student achievement dominates conversation. Teacher education programs are under pressure to ensure that pre-service teachers are able to step into classrooms and improve student achievement. This pressure can invite programs to focus on subject-specific and pedagogical competencies while minimizing ethical and relational aspects of teacher preparation. Yet caring relationships are central to more positive learning experiences. What should these relationships look like? For Christian teachers and teacher educators, the answer to this question lays, in part, in an examination of Jesus. This paper focuses on Jesus the Good Shepherd as seen in the …
Teachers’ Understanding Of Imago Dei, Beverley Norsworthy, Christina Belcher
Teachers’ Understanding Of Imago Dei, Beverley Norsworthy, Christina Belcher
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Often education is viewed pragmatically as that of preparing students for life as employees. Another view is that education is about enabling human beings to flourish. The pragmatic and flourishing paradox has consequences for national citizenship. For Christian teachers, critical to such an approach would be the manner in which their teaching practice is informed and shaped by a Christian worldview. Such shaping involves an applied knowledge with reference to understanding people, and particularly students as “Imago Dei.” This research presents a pilot study in which 120 teachers in Christian schools in New Zealand and Canada were invited, via an …

Them’S Fightin’ Words: The Effects Of Violent Rhetoric On Ethical Decision Making In Business, Joshua R. Gubler, Nathan P. Kalmoe, David A. Wood
Faculty Publications
Business managers regularly employ metaphorical violent rhetoric as a means of motivating their employees to action. While it might be effective to this end, research on violent media suggests that violent rhetoric might have other, less desirable consequences. This study examines how the use of metaphorical violent rhetoric by business managers impacts the ethical decision making of employees. We develop and test a model that explains how the use of violent rhetoric impacts employees’ willingness to break ethical standards, depending on the source of the rhetoric. The results of two experiments suggest that the use of violent rhetoric by a …

The Socratic Method, Elizabeth G. Porter
The Socratic Method, Elizabeth G. Porter
Chapters in Books
The Socratic method, one of Langdell’s most well-entrenched reforms to legal education, remains the law’s signature pedagogical technique. Although the term means different things to different people, its essence in the law school classroom is student analysis of cases led by a teacher, who calls on students to articulate gradually deeper understandings of a legal doctrine or theory.
Socratic learning requires students to think on the spot, answer precisely, and take intellectual risks. For over a decade now, the Socratic method has been out of fashion among those who write about legal pedagogy. In addition, the method’s critics describe what …
Blurred Lines: Sexual Orientation And Gender Nonconformity In Title Vii, Burton F. Peebles
Blurred Lines: Sexual Orientation And Gender Nonconformity In Title Vii, Burton F. Peebles
Emory Law Journal
Title VII¿s prohibition of discrimination on the basis of sex is read broadly to include gender nonconformity. Although social scientists have documented the historic link between the homosocial performance of sexual orientation and the achievement of hegemonic masculinity within the modern workplace, courts continue to struggle with the task of defining the scope of protected gender nonconforming conduct. As many within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community continue to demand equal access, recognition, and employment opportunity, only twenty-one states provide statutory protections for LGBT persons or their allies, and courts utilize a number of judicial limits in an attempt …

Friendships For High School Students: With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Without, Alanna Young
Honors Theses and Capstones
People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience deficits in social communication, having difficulty with carrying on conversations, abiding by social norms, and feeling empathy towards others. As social skills are important for successful interactions, these deficiencies can decrease the number of friendships experienced by teenagers with ASD. However, it is also possible that other social barriers are involved, such as stigma, assumed by peers of teenagers with ASD. The influence of deficits in social interaction and stigma was examined through semi-structured interviews and focus groups, comprised of groups with teenagers with ASD and groups with typically developing teenagers. It was …

This analytical essay looks at the myriad of ways innocent people are wrongfully convicted and how the criminal justice system fails to truly reach a fair and equitable result. This article examines how fatal mistakes can be made and reveals that there can be flaws in the science of DNA testing, including fraud, criminologist bias, improper laboratory procedures, and human error.
