A Critical Realist Approach To Engineering Ethics, Eddie Conlon
A Critical Realist Approach To Engineering Ethics, Eddie Conlon
Conference papers
This paper is focused on the teaching of engineering ethics (EE). Through a focus on safety and the lens of what sociologists call the agency/ structure relationship it examimes various approaches to this teaching. Drawing on Critical Realism it argues there are deficiencies in both the dominant approach and a number of proposed alternatives as they suffer from various forms of conflationism . By drawing on Critical Realism (CR) a more robust agenda for teaching engineering ethics can be developed. It is argued that CR offers a basis for understanding the range of factors which lead to accidents and disasters. …

Relationship Between Religiosity And Self-Efficacy Among Patients With Cardiovascular Disorders: Field Study At The Center Chu Hospital Saadna Abdel Nour, Setif Algeria, Korrichi Fayçal, Jabali Nouredinne
Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies
The study aims to put under scrutiny the existing links between the behavior of religiosity and self-efficacy. Gender and education level were used as additional independent variables to test if they have effect on religiosity and self-efficacy. The study relied on data from 62 persons (39 males and 23 females). SPSS 18 was used to analyze data (means and standard deviations, correlation, t-test and ANOVA). The results of the study revealed a significant correlation between religiosity and self-efficacy. However, there was no effect of either gender or educational level on the two dependent measures. The researchers recommend that there should …

A Qualitative Coded Analysis Of Undergraduate And Graduate Student Library Instruction Feedback, Tina Budzise-Weaver, Susan P. Goodwin, Michael L. Maciel
A Qualitative Coded Analysis Of Undergraduate And Graduate Student Library Instruction Feedback, Tina Budzise-Weaver, Susan P. Goodwin, Michael L. Maciel
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Student Feedback has become increasingly important as libraries tailor their services to the customer. A team from Texas A&M University Libraries analyzed student feedback forms to determine impressions from library information literacy classes. This paper analyzes student feedback forms through both traditional assessment and a coded-analysis using ATLAS.ti. These analyses determined student participation by number of attendees, student classification, and departmental majors. Overall themes emerged from students’ comments that provided insight into the information literacy sessions. The study found that reaching undergraduate students in their first–year and seeing graduate students more than once, makes a greater impact on their …
Property And Political Community: Democracy, Oligarchy, And The Case Of Ukraine, Monica E. Eppinger
Property And Political Community: Democracy, Oligarchy, And The Case Of Ukraine, Monica E. Eppinger
All Faculty Scholarship
Widening wealth gaps in Western democracies have brought new scrutiny to relationships between property and political community. For the prior quarter century, Western legal scholars have urged privatization around the globe as the key to a virtuous circle of "market democracy." This Article traces origins of the market democracy consensus to ideas that identify positive features of political community -- liberty, wealth, or democracy -- with private property ownership. Fieldwork in Ukraine, where Western privatization advice was followed at a time of founding a new polity, provides data to compare predictions with outcomes. Two unexpected figures -- the Oligarch and …

Endgame For Polio Eradication? Options For Overcoming Social And Political Factors In The Progress To Eradicating Polio., Pavan Ganapathiraju, Christiaan B Morssink, James D. Plumb
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
In 1988, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) was launched with the goal of eradicating polio by the year 2000. After 25 years, several dynamics still challenge this large public health campaign with new cases of polio being reported annually. We examine the roots of this initiative to eradicate polio, its scope, the successes and setbacks during the last 25 years and reflect on the current state of affairs. We examine the social and political factors that are barriers to polio eradication. Options are discussed for solving the current impasse of polio eradication: using force, respecting individual freedoms and gaining …
