Defining Adolescence, Alexa C. Curtis Oct 2015

Defining Adolescence, Alexa C. Curtis

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

Chronologic definitions of adolescence and adolescent sub-stages vary throughout the literature. Definitions for adolescence are important because they inform the construction and implementation of adolescent research and program development. This article identifies commonly used chronologic parameters for adolescence, explores the developmental theory contributing to the understanding of adolescent chronology and posits a developmentally consistent definition of this critical transitional phase as: “early adolescence” 11-13 years, “adolescence” 14-17 years, and “young adulthood” 18-25 years. Keywords: adolescent, development, chronologic definitions, research

To Id Or Not To Id, Emma E. Korowotny

SURGE

“And now can I have the last four digits of your Social? Then we’ll both know each other.”

A cloud of anger swept over me. I glanced up from my computer, blinked, and then elected to continue with my work. I gave the man his money and receipt and sent him on his merry way. He transformed into a veritable ray of sunshine for the other tellers, calling, “have a nice day!” as he left. [excerpt]

Rural Adolescents Are More Likely Than Their Urban Peers To Abuse Prescription Painkillers, Shannon M. Monnat, Khary K. Rigg

Carsey Publications

In this fact sheet, authors Shannon Monnat and Khary Rigg examine prescription painkiller abuse for over 32,000 youth aged 12–17 using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an annual nationally representative survey of the non-institutionalized U.S. population. They report that over 1.1 million adolescents aged 12 to 17 (4.7 percent of this population) abused prescription painkillers in 2014. Prescription painkiller abuse was more common among rural than urban adolescents. In 2014, 8.6 percent of rural adolescents, 8.1 percent of adolescents in small urban areas, and 6.5 percent of adolescents in large urban areas reported ever abusing …

Reel Or Reality? The Portrayal Of Prostitution In Major Motion Pictures, Raleigh Blasdell Oct 2015

Reel Or Reality? The Portrayal Of Prostitution In Major Motion Pictures, Raleigh Blasdell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined media portrayals of street-level prostitution. The objectives of this research were twofold. The first was to examine the nature of the film industry’s portrayal of females engaging in street-level prostitution in the United States in the following areas: 1) entry into sex work; 2) the economic need behind the women’s involvement; 3) experiences of childhood victimization; 4) presence and role of pimps; 5) drug/alcohol abuse; 6) victimization; and 7) mental/physical health. The second objective was to determine if this media coverage is analogous to extant research on these aspects of prostitution culture.

The Rna World: 4,000,000,050 Years Old, Niles Lehman Oct 2015

The Rna World: 4,000,000,050 Years Old, Niles Lehman

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The notion that molecular systems such as RNA can display a wide range of evolutionary processes in the absence of fully formed cellular life continues to gain support. Understanding how RNA can behave in an abiotic context is a key piece of our picture of how life developed and expanded on the Earth, and by proxy, elsewhere. We can study how RNA behaves in this regard through a combination of in vivo work (with small regulatory RNAs and larger catalytic RNAs alike), experimental work in the laboratory, and through powerful analytical and simulation studies. These efforts will not only grant …

The Social Construction Of Medicalization Of Pregnancy And Childbirth, Mirko Prosen Oct 2015

The Social Construction Of Medicalization Of Pregnancy And Childbirth, Mirko Prosen

Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports

Pregnancy and childbirth in every society reflect societal values. During the last century (in Slovenia after World War II), medicine, medical interventions, and medical technology became indispensable elements of societal control over these otherwise natural phenomena. Based on Conrad and Schneiders' sequential model of medicalization, we can confirm that in Slovenia both pregnancy and childbirth are medicalized. This raises three questions that need to be answered: how do women experience and accept medicalization through their own pregnancy and birth experiences and what is their relationship towards natural childbirth; how do medical staff working in obstetrics clinics perceive and experience the …

Eviction Court And A Judicial Duty Of Inquiry, Harold J. Krent Oct 2015

Eviction Court And A Judicial Duty Of Inquiry, Harold J. Krent

All Faculty Scholarship

ABSTRACT

The Illinois Appellate Court in Draper & Kramer v. King reversed a court ordered eviction on the ground that the tenant likely did not appreciate that she had agreed in a settlement to vacate her residence in addition to paying arrears on rent. In the chaotic environment of eviction court proceedings, tenants too often pledge paying back rent without realizing that, at the same time, they have agreed to be evicted and that the court ordered eviction will follow them for the rest of their lives. In Chicago, at least, the potential for confusion is enhanced because the agreed …

Front-Loading, Avoidance, And Other Features Of The Recent Supreme Court Class Action Jurisprudence, Richard D. Freer

Akron Law Review

This Article discusses each of the thirteen Supreme Court decisions with the goal of drawing at least tentative conclusions for their impact on federal class practice. The thirteen decisions may be placed into five groups. Only three of the cases directly involve the general interpretation and application of Rule 23, while the other ten fall into four particular substantive areas. Reflecting these divisions, this Article proceeds in five parts. Part I discusses the three cases directly interpreting Rule 23. Part II addresses the three decisions involving securities classes brought under Rule 10b-5. Part III discusses the three decisions involving the …

The University As A Site For Transformation Around Sustainability, J Winter, D Cotton, P Hopkinson, V Grant Oct 2015

The University As A Site For Transformation Around Sustainability, J Winter, D Cotton, P Hopkinson, V Grant

Plymouth Institute of Education

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has emerged in response to the negative consequences of economic and industrial processes. These issues are highly complex and their mitigation suggests social and economic transformation underpinned by a paradigm shift in favour of sustainability. Higher Education (HE) plays a crucial role in ESD; however there is little research which has investigated the links between transformative learning theories and ESD. This paper reports on research which explored academic and student perceptions of opportunities for transformation around sustainability in two UK universities. The findings suggest that, despite shared understanding about the nature of pedagogic approaches that …

Are Faith-Based, Long-Term Care Nonprofit Organizations More Effective? A Survey Study Of Nursing Homes In Virginia, Bulent Ucar, Zubeyir Nisanci

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

The role of religion in effectiveness of organizations has been part of serious debates among policy makers, practitioners and scholars after President George W. Bush's creation of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives in 2001.

The primary purpose of this study is to determine whether being a faith affiliated nursing home influences performance. The secondary purpose is, regardless of ownership type - religiously affiliated or secular - to investigate if more religiously involved nursing homes perform better than their less religiously involved counterparts. Performance is measured based on criterion put in place by the Center for Medicare …

Residential Mobility During Adolescence: Even "Upward" Moves Predict High School Dropout, Molly W. Metzger, Patrick J. Fowler, Bennett Kelberman Oct 2015

Residential Mobility During Adolescence: Even "Upward" Moves Predict High School Dropout, Molly W. Metzger, Patrick J. Fowler, Bennett Kelberman

Center for Social Development Research

Racial and economic segregation have long endured as systemic challenges in U.S. metropolitan areas. To combat the inequalities of segregation, two broad policy approaches have emerged: (1) preservation stresses investment in low-income neighborhoods, and (2) mobility stresses moving households in low-income areas to more affluent areas. Our recent study reveals some possible unintended consequences of the latter approach, particularly for adolescents. We find that moving during adolescence is associated with decreased odds of graduating from high school, even when moving to significantly higher income neighborhoods.

Resistance, The Church, And A Comparison Of Ceramics From Sixteenth-Century Caluco, El Salvador, Alison Denise Hodges Oct 2015

Resistance, The Church, And A Comparison Of Ceramics From Sixteenth-Century Caluco, El Salvador, Alison Denise Hodges

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines ceramics from the church of San Pedro y San Pablo, Caluco, El Salvador, to investigate the pressures of Spanish evangelization during the Colonial Period. It compares the church's ceramic assemblage to two privately-owned houses, also within Caluco. Examining choices in ceramic styles for serving food and drink is one way to examine the colonial policies of reducción, which were to instill a regular, commonplace Christian order in everyday life. The materials in question were a large number of Spanish majolicas, as well as 300 locally-made vessels, and form, decoration, and ware was noted for each. The relative …
