You Can't Just Pick One Race And You Shouldn't Have To: Analyzing Biracial Protagonists In Young Adult Fiction, Tiffany N. Browne Oct 2015

You Can't Just Pick One Race And You Shouldn't Have To: Analyzing Biracial Protagonists In Young Adult Fiction, Tiffany N. Browne

McNair Scholars Research Journal

In recent years, Children’s Literature has seen a notable increase of texts involving racial diversity. One area that does not garner as much attention is Young Adult fiction with biracial protagonists. With the growing number of families in the United States identifying as biracial or multi-racial, it is important to examine the representations of biracial characters offered to readers. Poston has noted that biracial adolescents often experience crisis and alienation, as they are forced to choose an identity that does not fully encompass their complex racial background (Nuttgens 2010). Sarah Jamila Stevenson’s The Latte Rebellion (2011), Joan Steinau Lester’s Black, …

From Isolation To Collaboration: An Autoethnographic Account, Andrew Sutherland Oct 2015

From Isolation To Collaboration: An Autoethnographic Account, Andrew Sutherland

The Qualitative Report

In this paper I explore my personal experiences with collaborative music performance projects. Collaborations between different groups of musicians can be a transformative moment in the lives of students and music educators. The process of collaboration provides opportunities that cannot always be achieved when an ensemble performs alone. Many of these projects were undertaken in my role as a music educator responsible for school music ensembles but in one case, as a conductor of a community band. This idiographic auto-ethnographical study is based on my own reflective journal, which was analysed using Autoethnography and Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. The themes identified …

Switchgrass Germplasm Resources, Michael D. Casler, Kenneth P. Vogel, Melanie Harrison Oct 2015

Switchgrass Germplasm Resources, Michael D. Casler, Kenneth P. Vogel, Melanie Harrison

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is an important native grass and dominant member of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. It is used for conservation, restoration, livestock feed production, and bioenergy feedstock production. The purpose of this review is to describe the biological and geographical basis for switchgrass germplasm diversity and to provide a resource for scientists and outreach personnel to find switchgrass germplasm to meet their needs. Upland and lowland ecotypes represent the most important polymorphism in switchgrass, with distinct but overlapping geographic distributions. Variation in ploidy exists within both ecotypes, with 2n = 4x = 36 the dominant ploidy …

The Self-Perceived College Persistence Factors Of Successful Latino Males, Carolina E. Gonzalez Oct 2015

The Self-Perceived College Persistence Factors Of Successful Latino Males, Carolina E. Gonzalez

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The experiences of Latino male students are oftentimes consolidated with those of other student populations from similar backgrounds. While the research on Latino males has been slowly expanding to include their varied experiences, it has been mostly characterized by a deficit-oriented narrative focusing on their challenges rather than their successes. Concentrating on the difficulties experienced by Latinos socializes administrators and researchers to focus on students from underserved backgrounds as problems, instead of resilient beings (Harper, 2015).

This qualitative study focused on the experiences of 20 successful Latino male students at a four-year public institution. Through semi-structured interviews, participants discussed how …

Resilience To Ostracism: A Qualitative Inquiry, Daniel Waldeck, Ian Tyndall, Nik Chmiel Oct 2015

Resilience To Ostracism: A Qualitative Inquiry, Daniel Waldeck, Ian Tyndall, Nik Chmiel

The Qualitative Report

Ostracism is a painful event, which may lead to prolonged psychological distress. However, little is known about the mechanisms which may help people recover from such events. This study explored how people who are not chronically ostracised describe processing and coping with ostracism. Using a qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 participants (age group: 18-59; 12 female) from different occupational status groups. Thematic analyses revealed four major themes within the data: participants' immediate reaction to ostracism (“reflex”), subsequent reflections (“reflection”), efforts to manage their behaviour (“regulation”), and capacities to cope following ostracism (“adjustment”). Intensity emerged as a superordinate …

Embedding Researcher’S Reflexive Accounts Within The Analysis Of A Semi-Structured Qualitative Interview, Nashwa Ibrahim, Alison Edgley Oct 2015

Embedding Researcher’S Reflexive Accounts Within The Analysis Of A Semi-Structured Qualitative Interview, Nashwa Ibrahim, Alison Edgley

The Qualitative Report

This manuscript aims to embed a researcher’s reflexive account within a qualitative interview in an iterative process whereby a self-analytic reflexive exercise was conducted prior to, during the interview, and within the analysis of the interview. This interview was conducted between an overseas PhD student as an interviewer and a native PhD student as interviewee. The researcher’s (interviewer) demonstration of learning about herself is of particular importance in this piece of work. Having the chance to conduct this interview between an overseas PhD student and a native student provided insights about the stereotypes implanted within the researcher which meant that …

Metafiction As Genre Fiction, Jeremy A. Levine Oct 2015

Metafiction As Genre Fiction, Jeremy A. Levine

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

Realism, the genre in which literature is expected to reflect reality, tends to act as the default setting for establish- ing the worth of a given piece. This paper contends that metafiction, a post-modern genre characterized by a work’s awareness of its own fictional nature, has been damaged by realism’s standards. Using a case study of two metafic- tional works, John Barth’s “Life-Story” and David Foster Wallace’s Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way against a historical and theoretical backdrop, the paper both isolates metafiction from realism while describing its deliberate artistic mission. This identity is based on open …

Religious And Secular Knowledge On The Draft In Israel, Laina E. Pauker Oct 2015

Religious And Secular Knowledge On The Draft In Israel, Laina E. Pauker

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

This research seeks to understand religious and secular knowledge on the question of military draft in Israel within the Jewish population. With recent legal changes in conscription policy, there has been much controversy over the role of Haredim [ultra-Orthodox] in the army. Drawing on feminist standpoint theory, this study uses thematic analysis of a qualitative (open-ended) online survey to examine what Jewish Israelis of different religious orienta- tions think and know about the draft issues as well as how they legitimize their ideas. In analyzing Jewish Israeli knowledge, this research draws on the historical, philosophical division as well as the …

Epistemic Violence In The Process Of Othering: Real-World Applications And Moving Forward, Allie J. Bunch Oct 2015

Epistemic Violence In The Process Of Othering: Real-World Applications And Moving Forward, Allie J. Bunch

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

From the work of Pierre Bourdieu on symbolic violence came the study of epistemic violence, which is at the core of the process of othering marginalized groups. Epistemological scholars including Kristie Dotson, Miranda Fricker, Cynthia Townley, and Gayatri Spivak have done extensive work on the theory of the phenomenon; it is necessary to analyze the classifications of epistemic violence through their application in empirical settings. Addressing three case studies of “othering” highlights the importance of greater integration of marginalized groups into the education system as the necessary first step towards eliminating othering by targeting epistemic violence at a base level.

Reproductive Rights In Latin America: A Case Study Of Guatemala And Nicaragua, Katherine W. Bogen Oct 2015

Reproductive Rights In Latin America: A Case Study Of Guatemala And Nicaragua, Katherine W. Bogen

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

A lack of access to contraceptives and legal abortion for women throughout the nations of Nicaragua and Guatemala creates critical health care problems. Moreover, rural and underprivileged women in Guatemala and Nicaragua are facing greater limitations to birth control access, demonstrating a classist aspect in the global struggle for female reproductive rights. Although some efforts have been made over the past half-century to initiate a dialogue on the failure of medical care in these nations to adequately address issues of maternal mortality and reproductive rights, the women's reproductive health movements of Nicaragua and Guatemala have struggled to reach an effective …

Developmental Trajectories Of The Children Of The Incarcerated: From An Educational Psychological Perspective, Meagan C. Arrastia Oct 2015

Developmental Trajectories Of The Children Of The Incarcerated: From An Educational Psychological Perspective, Meagan C. Arrastia

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

In the state of Georgia, more than 28,000 children have parents that are currently incarcerated (The Sentencing Project, 2013). At the nationwide-level, a total of 10 million children have at some point lived without one or both parents due to incarceration (Pew, 2010). Although the captive audience of the imprisoned parents have been studied in the past, these parents rarely have an understanding of their children’s experiences. In fact, a majority of the state prison population reported never getting to see their children for visitation (Glaze & Maruscak, 2010). Recent research has found high rates of learning disabilities, communication problems, …

Situational Prevention And Public Transport Crime In El Salvador, Mangai Natarajan, Ronald Clarke, Carlos Carcach, Carlos Ponce, Margarita Beneke De Sanfeliú, Dolores Escobar Polanco, Mario Chávez, Mauricio Shi

Publications and Research

By any standard, there is a serious problem of crime on the public transport system in El Salvador. Guided by crime opportunity theory, this study undertook a rapid assessment of the problem consisting of a systematic observation of public transport in El Salvador and focus group discussions with passengers, bus operators, police and bus company owners/managers. The purposes were (1) to describe the main forms of crime and disorder afflicting the system, (2) to identify features of the system that contribute to the high levels of crime and disorder, and (3) to identify preventive measures, consistent with international experience. A …

The Evolution Of Csr And Its Reception In Post-Socialist Environments: The Case Of Hungary, István András, Mónika Rajcsányi-Molnár

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

Social responsibility is one of the most important requirements in business life. Values and mission statements, community contributions, ethics codes and sustainability reports are staples of the web pages of every self-respecting company. The concept has inspired a burgeoning academic discourse featuring some of the most noted social scientists. And yet, despite some important solutions and achievements, a rapidly changing and globalizing world continues to pose new challenges. The purpose of this article is to identify both achievements and challenges in the specific intersections of western corporate culture and post-socialist Eastern Europe. We first review the western, international academic discourse …

Open-Educational Resources (Oers) In The College Classroom: A Case Study, Judy O. Grissett, Charles Huffman Oct 2015

Open-Educational Resources (Oers) In The College Classroom: A Case Study, Judy O. Grissett, Charles Huffman

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Rising textbook costs are creating additional debt for college students and in some cases, are causing students to forgo purchasing a textbook (Mitchell, 2014). Open educational resources (OER), which are typically free or low-cost, have become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional paper textbooks. In this study, we examined perceptions and effectiveness of an OER in an introductory psychology course at a small, public university in Georgia. We compared 1) perceptions of the type of textbook students were using (perceptions of OERs among students using an OER and traditional paper texts among students using traditional paper texts) and 2) course …

New Media And Challenges Of Information Control: A Study Among Commercial Banks' Information Managers In Nigeria, Pius A. Onobhayedo, Ogechi Kasie-Nwachukwu Oct 2015

New Media And Challenges Of Information Control: A Study Among Commercial Banks' Information Managers In Nigeria, Pius A. Onobhayedo, Ogechi Kasie-Nwachukwu

Global Advances in Business Communication

Founded on digital technology, new media forms empower users to easily broadcast or narrowcast at low cost and without intermediary gatekeepers. Arguably, such empowerment may be frowned at by banks' information managers as their industry seem particularly vulnerable in the face of imprudent public dissemination of internal information. For example, negative information that goes viral on social media has the potential to cause grave damage to a bank's reputation and could even lead to a run on the bank.

Despite the aforementioned new media empowerment and risk dilemma, the academic literature is surprisingly silent about the challenges facing sensitive industries …
