Developing Whole Leaders For The Whole World, Robert Mckenna, Kira K. Wenzel Nov 2015

Developing Whole Leaders For The Whole World, Robert Mckenna, Kira K. Wenzel

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

How do we holistically develop leaders with the capacity and character to tackle the most pressing moral challenges in our modern world? While it may be easier to focus on one thing such as strengths, experiences, or mentors, the reality is that developing a leader’s capacity to lead well includes many interrelated components. Based on our experience and research, the six components of the Holistic Leadership Development Model (HLDM) are presented, along with strategies for creating rich conversations that connect the components in a meaningful way for leaders. The six areas are (1) experiences and learning; (2) strategic networking; (3) …

Applying Kouzes & Posner's Leadership Concepts To Poverty Alleviation Work In The Developing World, John Oliphant Nov 2015

Applying Kouzes & Posner's Leadership Concepts To Poverty Alleviation Work In The Developing World, John Oliphant

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Many people in the developing world struggle with significant poverty. People who feel trapped in a cycle of poverty often describe feeling inferior and powerless. Those who are relatively wealthy and in leadership roles may suffer from a different pathology that some have described as a “god- complex” in which a sense of superiority may develop, leading to the belief that they have been chosen to decide what is best for the poor. As the leaders of organizations that do poverty alleviation work in the developing world contemplate what approach to take when formulating their leadership style, they would do …

Servant Leadership And Its Relationships With Core Self-Evaluation And Job Satisfaction, Len Tischler, Robert Giambatista, Robert Mckeage, David Mccormick Nov 2015

Servant Leadership And Its Relationships With Core Self-Evaluation And Job Satisfaction, Len Tischler, Robert Giambatista, Robert Mckeage, David Mccormick

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Servant leadership is a growing topic in the leadership literature. Our study considered servant leadership’s relationship to two outcomes, core self-evaluation and job satisfaction. The former is particularly noteworthy because if servant leadership predicts core self-evaluation this would confirm that servant leadership affects important changes in employees as people, a central tenet of servant leadership. In addition, if servant leadership predicts core self-evaluation, this could add to the question of whether core self-evaluation is a non-changeable personality trait or is potentially malleable. We conducted a field study of three firms and found that servant leadership predicts both core self-evaluation and …

Training Of Working Memory Impacts Neural Processing Of Vocal Pitch Regulation, Weifeng Li, Xiangqian Guo, Jeffery A. Jones, Xiyan Huang, Xi Chen, Peng Liu, Shaozhen Chen, Hanjun Liu

Psychology Faculty Publications

Working memory training can improve the performance of tasks that were not trained. Whether auditory-motor integration for voice control can benefit from working memory training, however, remains unclear. The present event-related potential (ERP) study examined the impact of working memory training on the auditory-motor processing of vocal pitch. Trained participants underwent adaptive working memory training using a digit span backwards paradigm, while control participants did not receive any training. Before and after training, both trained and control participants were exposed to frequency-altered auditory feedback while producing vocalizations. After training, trained participants exhibited significantly decreased N1 amplitudes and increased P2 amplitudes …

Increasing Language Awareness And Self-Efficacy Of Fl Students Using Self-Assessment And The Actfl Proficiency Guidelines, Elizabeth M. Kissling, M. E. O'Donnell

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

This study describes how oral language was assessed in an advanced-level college foreign language (FL) conversation course. Learners used the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines to guide self-analyses of their oral production at intervals throughout the course. The intent was to provide opportunities for learners to develop an understanding of what constitutes oral proficiency, gauge their own progress, and set personal goals. Learners’ self-analysis narratives suggested they began to notice different aspects of their speech and to better articulate their abilities and limitations. Broadly speaking, the results suggest that self-assessment of oral performance guided by the Proficiency Guidelines is an effective way …

Reliability Of Isometric And Eccentric Isokinetic Shoulder External Rotation, Brianna M. Papotto, Thomas Rice, Terry Malone, Timothy Butterfield, Tim L. Uhl

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

CONTEXT: Shoulder external rotators are challenged eccentrically throughout the deceleration phase of throwing which is thought to contribute to overuse injuries. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention programs as well as identify deficits, reliable and responsive measures of isometric and eccentric shoulder external rotation are necessary. Previously, isometric measures have primarily tested a single position and eccentric measures have not been found to have high reliability.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the between day reliability of multiple angle isometric and dynamic eccentric isokinetic testing of shoulder external rotation.

DESIGN: Repeated measures Participants: 10 healthy subjects (age: 30 ± 12 years, …

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Objectives: To evaluate and compare the color of porcelain veneers with try-in paste in relation to porcelain veneers with permanent cement. Also, to evaluate and compare combinations of three different shades and thicknesses of porcelain veneers and three cement shades before and after final cementation. Additionally, to evaluate and compare the color of porcelain veneers with cured permanent cement before and after aging. Background: Porcelain veneers and ceramic restorations have become one of the most popular approaches in the anterior area due to their natural appearance and esthetics. However, more conservative approaches have led to thinner restorations with increased translucency. …

Teacher Beliefs About Motivating And Teaching Students To Carry Out Engineering Design Challenges: Some Initial Data, James P. Van Haneghan, Susan A. Pruet, Rhonda Neal-Waltman, Jessica M. Harlan

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The present study examines middle school teachers’ beliefs about seven learning outcomes related to a project that involves developing and examining the effects of a set of engineering design modules constructed for use by middle school math and science teachers. Overall, the teachers involved in the intervention appear to believe they have the instructional skills, professional development, and resources to carry out the modules. Teachers from all of the schools (both intervention and comparison schools) for the most part valued the outcomes as important. Results of the study indicate that, although teachers believe they value and can obtain most of …

Trans-Disciplinary Collaboration To Enhance Coastal Resilience: Envisioning A National Community Modeling Initiative, L. Donelson Wright, C. Reid Nichols, Arthur G. Cosby, Samantha Danchuk, Christopher F. D’Elia, Gina R. Mendez

Coastal Resilience Workshop

This section presents a synthesis of the major outcomes from the coastal resilience workshops. This paper is based on the presentations and discussions that have been guided by the Chair and numerous stakeholders such as university researchers, Non Governmental Organizations, and federal, state, and local governments. SURA’s workshop series promotes collaboration and fully-integrated processes, and it should be noted that the actual workshop is only a first step; the follow-up work is likely to continue for years. The major results from this workshop relate to the development of trans-disciplinary approaches that help a community to "bounce back" after hazardous events …

Cultural Mapping As A Social Practice: A Response To "Mapping The Cultural Boundaries In Schools And Communities: Redefining Spaces Through Organizing", Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur, Shenaz A. Hanif-Shahban Nov 2015

Cultural Mapping As A Social Practice: A Response To "Mapping The Cultural Boundaries In Schools And Communities: Redefining Spaces Through Organizing", Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur, Shenaz A. Hanif-Shahban

Democracy & Education

Inspired by Gerald Wood and Elizabeth Lemley’s (2015) article entitled Mapping the Cultural Boundaries in Schools and Communities: Redefining Spaces Through Organizing, this response inquires further into cultural mapping as a social practice. From our perspective, cultural mapping has potential to contribute to place making, as well as the values to sustain more equitable social futures. Thus, alongside the maps created, we longed to learn more about how the participants were engaged in mapping, how perceptions of mapping changed over time and context, how participation was mediated by relationships, and how transformation in the participants, child, youth, and adults …

The Politics Of Mindfulness. A Response To "Mindfulness, Democracy, Education", Patrick W. Comstock Nov 2015

The Politics Of Mindfulness. A Response To "Mindfulness, Democracy, Education", Patrick W. Comstock

Democracy & Education

Mindfulness is rapidly becoming a mainstream educational intervention. A growing number of schools, colleges, and universities are incorporating mindfulness into the curriculum, and while there is a substantial body of research literature in psychology attesting to the mental and physical benefits of mindfulness, critics of the movement have suggested that mindfulness lacks social and political dimensions. In this article, a response to “Mindfulness, Democracy, and Education,” the author shows why this line of criticism is misguided. Far from being self-centered, asocial, and apolitical, the practice of mindfulness is intrinsically political.

The Ethics Of Teaching For Social Justice: A Framework For Exploring The Intellectual And Moral Virtues Of Social Justice Educators. A Response To "Ethics In Teaching For Democracy And Social Justice", Rebecca M. Taylor Nov 2015

The Ethics Of Teaching For Social Justice: A Framework For Exploring The Intellectual And Moral Virtues Of Social Justice Educators. A Response To "Ethics In Teaching For Democracy And Social Justice", Rebecca M. Taylor

Democracy & Education

Pursuing social justice in education raises ethical questions about teaching practice that have not been fully addressed in the social justice literature. Hytten (2015) initiated a valuable way forward in developing an ethics of social justice educators, drawing on virtue ethics.

In this paper, I provide additional support to this effort by arguing that a virtue approach to ethics of teaching is in fact compatible with responsiveness to social context in teaching. I then propose a refined framework for considering the virtues of teachers, one which asks us to identify virtues relevant to teaching within the broad categories of intellectual …

Enacting Social Justice Ethically: Individual And Communal Habits. A Response To "Ethics In Teaching For Democracy And Social Justice", Michael G. Gunzenhauser Nov 2015

Enacting Social Justice Ethically: Individual And Communal Habits. A Response To "Ethics In Teaching For Democracy And Social Justice", Michael G. Gunzenhauser

Democracy & Education

In response to Hytten’s provocative opening of a conversation about an ethics for activist teaching, in this essay I address three interesting contributions that Hytten made. First, I explore the significance of the imagined ethical subject in Hytten’s example and in many prior authors’ work on ethics in social justice teaching. Expanding the imagined ethical subject (beyond the resistant student with limited experience of difference), which Hytten began to do, is fruitful for additional contexts. Second, I attend to the philosophical basis upon which Hytten rested her ethical theory and suggest some ways that philosophers might follow her critical and …

Exploring Prosocial Behavior Through Structured Philosophical Dialogue: A Quantitative Evaluation, Monica B. Glina Nov 2015

Exploring Prosocial Behavior Through Structured Philosophical Dialogue: A Quantitative Evaluation, Monica B. Glina

Democracy & Education

The problem of bullying in schools cannot be overstated. Researchers have examined the problem of bullying in schools from a variety of perspectives and have found that bullying has serious short- and long-term effects not just for the victim but for the bully as well. A variety of interventions have been implemented, and research shows that the majority, which are monological in nature, have demonstrated minimal, if any, impact on counteracting occurrences of bullying in schools. This study uses three quantitative measures to examine the impact that an instructional method steeped in the dynamics of dialogical inquiry has on students’ …
