The Effect Of Motivation And Positive Affect On Ego Depletion: Replenishment Versus Release Mechanism, Ze Zhu, Jian Li, Bo Zhang, Ye Li, Houcan Zhang

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this study, 2 experiments were conducted to investigate whether motivation and positive affect can alleviate ego depletion and to elucidate their possible mechanisms. In Experiment 1, a crossing-out-letter task was adapted to reach an ego depletion state for Chinese participants. Participants were then randomly assigned to the extrinsic motivation group, the positive affect group or the depletion control group. After the experimental treatment, a dumbbell task was used to measure participants' remaining self-regulatory resources. The results showed that participants in the motivation and positive affect groups performed better on the dumbbell task than participants in the depletion control group. …

Promoting Self-Care For Nursing Students, Susan Bonhotal, Susan A. Seibert, Melissa A. Hall Nov 2015

Promoting Self-Care For Nursing Students, Susan Bonhotal, Susan A. Seibert, Melissa A. Hall

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Taking care of oneself should be a lifelong habit. Nursing students often put aside their own self-care to focus on the rigors of academia. Students describe experiencing both academic and clinical stressors. Stress felt by nursing students could impede the student's ability to learn and function. It is paramount for instructors to pay attention to students' psychological status and their academic performance. Teaching nursing students about the importance may promote stress management and encourage positive self-care habits throughout the students' nursing career.

Implementation: The Self-Care Project (SCP) is a semester long, joint venture between the first two nursing classes (Introduction …

An Animal Model Of Flashbulb Memory: Insights Into The Time-Dependent Mechanisms Of Memory Enhancement, Laura Ashley Bullard Nov 2015

An Animal Model Of Flashbulb Memory: Insights Into The Time-Dependent Mechanisms Of Memory Enhancement, Laura Ashley Bullard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The vivid memory of an emotional event, as well as memory for incidental details associated with the arousing event, has been referred to collectively as a “flashbulb memory”. An important aspect of flashbulb memory in people is that an emotional event enhances memory of contextual details, such as the weather, or clothes one was wearing at the time of the event. Therefore, an emotional event not only produces a detailed memory of the event, itself, but also enhances memory for contextual details that would otherwise not be remembered. The first goal of this work is to describe the development of …

How Visuo-Spatial Mental Imagery Develops: Image Generation And Maintenance, Mc Wimmer, Kl Maras, Ej Robinson, Mj Doherty, N Pugeault

School of Psychology

Two experiments examined the nature of visuo-spatial mental imagery generation and maintenance in 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-year old children and adults (N = 211). The key questions were how image generation and maintenance develop (Experiment 1) and how accurately children and adults coordinate mental and visually perceived images (Experiment 2). Experiment 1 indicated that basic image generation and maintenance abilities are present at 4 years of age but the precision with which images are generated and maintained improves particularly between 4 and 8 years. In addition to increased precision, Experiment 2 demonstrated that generated and maintained mental images become increasingly …

Environmental Enrichment Increases Glucocorticoid Receptors And Decreases Glua2 And Protein Kinase M Zeta (Pkmζ) Trafficking During Chronic Stress: A Protective Mechanism?, Roseanna M. Zanca, Stephen H. Braren, Brigid Maloney, Lisa M. Schrott, Victoria N. Luine, Peter A. Serrano

Publications and Research

Environmental enrichment (EE) housing paradigms have long been shown beneficial for brain function involving neural growth and activity, learning and memory capacity, and for developing stress resiliency. The expression of the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor subunit GluA2, which is important for synaptic plasticity and memory, is increased with corticosterone (CORT), undermining synaptic plasticity and memory. Thus, we determined the effect of EE and stress on modulating GluA2 expression in Sprague-Dawley male rats. Several markers were evaluated which include: plasma CORT, the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), GluA2, and the atypical protein kinase M zeta (PKMζ). For 1 week standard-(ST) or EE-housed animals …

The Simulation Studies Of Stress-Strength Model For Eled, M. A. El-Damcese, M. O. Mohamed, Gh. Marei

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In this paper, the estimation of R = P [Y < X], namely Stress- Strength model is studied when both X and Y are two independent random variables with the extended linear exponential distribution (ELED), under different assumptions about their parameters, Maximum likelihood estimator in the case of fixed two parameters (𝑎=1,𝑏= 2), common unknown parameters (𝑎1=𝑎2=𝑎,𝑏1=𝑏2=𝑏), and all unknown parameters (𝑎1,𝑎2,𝑏1,𝑏2,𝛼,𝛽) can also be obtained in explicit form. Estimating R with Bayes estimator with non-informative prior in the same previous cases with the same parameters , we obtain the asymptotic distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator and it can be used to construct confidence interval of R. Different methods are compared using simulations and one data analysis has been performed for illustrative purposes.

Public Attitudes To Housing Systems For Pregnant Pigs, E. B. Ryan, David Fraser, Daniel M. Weary

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

Understanding concerns about the welfare of farm animals is important for the development of socially sustainable production practices. This study used an online survey to test how views on group versus stall housing for pregnant sows varied when Canadian and US participants were provided information about these systems, including access to scientific papers, YouTube videos, Google images, and a frequently-asked-questions page (S1 Appendix). Initial responses and changes in responses after accessing the information were analyzed from Likert scores of 242 participants and from their written comments. Participants were less willing to accept the use of gestation stalls after viewing information …

Intervening In School-Based Youth Conflict: Violence Reduction, Positive Youth Development, Peer Mediation, And Conflict Resolution Education, Kaila Obstfeld Eisenkraft Nov 2015

Intervening In School-Based Youth Conflict: Violence Reduction, Positive Youth Development, Peer Mediation, And Conflict Resolution Education, Kaila Obstfeld Eisenkraft

Massachusetts Office of Public Collaboration Publications

Public concern over youthful conflict was heightened during the latter half of the twentieth century by surges in juvenile violence and crime. In the 1990s, the prevention approach to reducing juvenile violence expanded to include a positive youth development focus which involved interventions to reinforce young people’s strengths. Strategies were devised and implemented in programs, including such school-based interventions as conflict resolution education and peer mediation, to enable youngsters to constructively manage conflict and increase the likelihood of positive outcomes. A review of the research provides promising evidence for the effectiveness of such programs in diminishing and managing school-based youth …

Saccular Transcriptome Profiles Of The Seasonal Breeding Plainfin Midshipman Fish (Porichthys Notatus), A Teleost With Divergent Sexual Phenotypes, Joshua J. Faber-Hammond, Manoj P. Samanta, Elizabeth A. Whitchurch, Dustin Manning, Joseph A. Sisneros, Allison B. Coffin

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Acoustic communication is essential for the reproductive success of the plainfin midshipman fish (Porichthys notatus). During the breeding season, type I males use acoustic cues to advertise nest location to potential mates, creating an audible signal that attracts reproductive females. Type II (sneaker) males also likely use this social acoustic signal to find breeding pairs from which to steal fertilizations. Estrogen-induced changes in the auditory system of breeding females are thought to enhance neural encoding of the advertisement call, and recent anatomical data suggest the saccule (the main auditory end organ) as one possible target for this seasonal modulation. Here …

A Cognitive Neural Architecture Able To Learn And Communicate Through Natural Language, B Golosio, A Cangelosi, O Gamotina, Gl Masala

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Communicative interactions involve a kind of procedural knowledge that is used by the human brain for processing verbal and nonverbal inputs and for language production. Although considerable work has been done on modeling human language abilities, it has been difficult to bring them together to a comprehensive tabula rasa system compatible with current knowledge of how verbal information is processed in the brain. This work presents a cognitive system, entirely based on a large-scale neural architecture, which was developed to shed light on the procedural knowledge involved in language elaboration. The main component of this system is the central executive, …
