Ocean Acidification Risk Assessment For Alaska's Fishery Sector, Jessica Cross, Wiley Evans, Claudine Hauri, T.P. Hurst, Julia Ekstrom, Steve Colt, Noelle Lucey, Sarah Cooley, Jeremy Mathis, Richard Feely
ISER Articles
The highly productive fisheries of Alaska are located in seas projected to experience strong global change, including rapid transitions in temperature and ocean acidification-driven changes in pH and other chemical parameters. Many of the marine organisms that are most intensely affected by ocean acidification(OA) contribute substantially to the state’s commercial fisheries and traditional subsistence way of life. Prior studies of OA’s potential impacts on human communities have focused only on possible direct economic losses from specific scenarios of human dependence on commercial harvests and damages to marine species. However, other economic and social impacts, such as changes in food security …

Metatranscriptome Analyses Indicate Resource Partitioning Between Diatoms In The Field, Harriet Alexander, Bethany D. Jenkins, Tatiana A. Rynearson, Sonya T. Dyhrman
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Diverse communities of marine phytoplankton carry out half of global primary production. The vast diversity of the phytoplankton has long perplexed ecologists because these organisms coexist in an isotropic environment while competing for the same basic resources (e.g., inorganic nutrients). Differential niche partitioning of resources is one hypothesis to explain this “paradox of the plankton,” but it is difficult to quantify and track variation in phytoplankton metabolism in situ. Here, we use quantitative metatranscriptome analyses to examine pathways of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) metabolism in diatoms that cooccur regularly in an estuary on the east coast of the United …
The Lived Experiences Of Mexican-Heritage Mothers Caring For Overweight Preschool Children, Susan Mcdonald
The Lived Experiences Of Mexican-Heritage Mothers Caring For Overweight Preschool Children, Susan Mcdonald
The Qualitative Report
Mexican-heritage children are at greater risk to become overweight or obese than children of other ethnic or racial groups. Despite this, there is limited information in the literature about how the mothers care for their preschoolers after they are classified as overweight or obese. The objective of this study was to gain insight into the lived experiences of Mexican-heritage mothers caring for overweight or obese preschool children to enhance nurses’ ability to effectively care for these children. A qualitative, hermeneutic design was selected for this study guided by the phenomenological approach of Max van Manen. Saturation was achieved after interviewing …

Pakistan As A Regional Manufacturing Hub?, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
Alongside are the excerpts from the key-note address that the writer delivered at Lahore School of Economics last month. Manufacturing's share in GDP increased from about 8 percent in 1950 to about 18 percent by 1995 and has hovered around that for the last twenty years. The composition of manufacturing sector has also remained largely unaltered with Textiles and Food and Beverages accounting for almost half of the production. Manufactured exports have been dominated by cotton textiles while the world demand pattern is shifting away to more dynamic sectors. Even within textiles Pakistan has lost market shares to regional competitors …

The purpose of this research was to assess the services needed by offenders who are soon going to be released. As a result, we recruited all incarcerated persons in jails, prisons and community-based correctional facilities (CBCFs) in Ohio who would be returning to the Wood County area upon release (i.e., we recruited incarcerated individuals who had a Wood County, OH address as their last place of residence prior to their most recent incarceration, or were arrested in and processed through Wood County courts). We designed a survey for individuals in Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) custody containing questions …

Preventing Obesity: The Impact Of Parental Involvement On Children’S Nutritional Health, Kaitlyn Chiazza
Preventing Obesity: The Impact Of Parental Involvement On Children’S Nutritional Health, Kaitlyn Chiazza
14th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Performance (2015)
Child obesity rates have dramatically risen over the past years, tripling from 5% in the 1970s to 15% in the early 2000s (Anderson, Butcher and Schanzenbach). The concern about this so-called epidemic has not escaped academic study. Economists have been especially interested in identifying the causes of obesity. Once the causes of obesity are identified, policy makers and families can make plans to improve child health. Some economic studies find parental involvement to be a strong influence on children’s obesity because the parent is able to mediate factors in the home environment that relate to food-related activities. This research utilizes …
Characteristics Of Trailer Thermal Environment During Commercial Swine Transport Managed Under U.S. Industry Guidelines, Y Xiong, Angela Green, Richard S. Gates
Characteristics Of Trailer Thermal Environment During Commercial Swine Transport Managed Under U.S. Industry Guidelines, Y Xiong, Angela Green, Richard S. Gates
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Transport is a critical factor in modern pork production and can seriously affect swine welfare. While previous research has explored thermal conditions during transport, the impact of extreme weather conditions on the trailer thermal environment under industry practices has not been well documented; and the critical factors impacting microclimate are not well understood. To assess the trailer microclimate during transport events, an instrumentation system was designed and installed at the central ceiling level, pig level and floor-level in each of six zones inside a commercial swine trailer. Transport environmental data from 34 monitoring trips (approximately 1–4 h in duration each) …

Montgomery County, Ohio’s diabetes prevalence outpaces the nation, and the incidence of adult obesity approaches 1/3. Access to healthy food in the impoverished neighborhood surrounding Dayton’s Good Samaritan Hospital, the site of the Family Medicine residency, is important when educating about health lifestyle. The purpose of this project was to determine whether the area was a food desert and to evaluate the implications of the label.
The Impact Of A Community Garden On A Local Township, Mariah E. Reitz
The Impact Of A Community Garden On A Local Township, Mariah E. Reitz
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
Due to increasing food insecurity and food deserts, community gardens can increase the accessibility for those under-served populations. These community gardens can help with the mental and physical health of the public. The goal of this research is to determine if a community garden will benefit a smaller community like that of a suburban Township and to use these trends to increase community health education and availability, social cohesion, and overall health behaviors and practices. A survey evaluated overall consumption of fruits and vegetables, affordability of healthy foods, and education on the consumption of these foods as well as assessing …

Investigation Of Bioactive Metabolites From The Antarctic Sponge Dendrilla Membranosa And Marine Microorganisms, Chris G. Witowski
Investigation Of Bioactive Metabolites From The Antarctic Sponge Dendrilla Membranosa And Marine Microorganisms, Chris G. Witowski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Natural products continue to be a valuable source of compounds in research involving chemical ecology and drug discovery. Secondary metabolites are biosynthesized to benefit the host organism in its environment (feeding deterrence from predators, antibiotic properties to avoid infection, etc.) but these compounds also serve as useful scaffolds in drug discovery applications. The research herein describes both aspects of these two branches of natural products chemistry. The Antarctic sponge Dendrilla membranosa produces diterpenes, of which membranolide A, deters feeding of the predatory amphipod Gondogenia antarctica. A metabolomic study of several sponges was undertaken to determine environmental factors that govern …

Depression And Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia In Elderly Male Medicare Beneficiaries, Ransome Eke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Depression is a common cause of disability and mortality in the elderly population. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a benign enlargement of prostate gland, may be related to depression in men, as reported in previous studies. This dissertation explored the co-occurrence of depression and BPH in elderly men, the transition probabilities of depression status as its relations to varying BPH transition status, and the effect of socioeconomic disadvantage on depression in men with BPH. The data were drawn from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) and Medicare claims data from 2005 through 2009. The study population comprised of community dwelling elderly …
