Mustang Ems: Community Emergency Medical Education, Kelly Kiser
Mustang Ems: Community Emergency Medical Education, Kelly Kiser
Collection of Engaged Learning
While serving as Captain of Mustang EMS, I used Engaged Learning support to develop a series of educational programs designed to make campus a safer place and help Mustang EMS members grow professionally. By designing and implementing Emergency Preparedness Booths at events such as PerunaPalooza, I sought to teach SMU students how to recognize and respond to common medical emergencies such as alcohol poisoning, heart attack, and stroke. Hosting Emergency Response Training Scenarios helped to generate a crew of knowledgeable Mustang EMS officers that will ensure the continuity of this event. Finally, by designing a protocol and hosting a campus-wide …

Collection of Engaged Learning
The design of this project was two-fold; the research component included examination of data from a previous investigation and compared it with data collected in a community service project. In each, the aim was to assess the health habits of underserved Spanish communities and provide information and opportunity for engagement with health education. Data were collected from voluntary participants in Panama and West Dallas. The purpose of the investigation was to learn more about perceptions of health habits and provide hands-on learning regarding what it means to be healthy and practice a wellness lifestyle. Specifically, to help participants in underserved …

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a determining factor in the tumor microenvironment that restrains or promotes malignant growth. In this report, we show how the molecular chaperone protein Hsp47 functions as a nodal hub in regulating an ECM gene transcription network. A transcription network analysis showed that Hsp47 expression was activated during breast cancer development and progression. Hsp47 silencing reprogrammed human breast cancer cells to form growth-arrested and/or noninvasive structures in 3D cultures, and to limit tumor growth in xenograft assays by reducing deposition of collagen and fibronectin. Coexpression network analysis also showed that levels of microRNA(miR)-29b and -29c were …

Purification And Characterization Of Nattokinase From Cultural Filtrate Of Red Alga Porphyra Dentata Fermented By Bacillus Subtilis N1, Hong-Ting Victor Lin, Guan-James Wu, Meng-Chien Hsieh, Shun-Hsien Chang, Guo-Jane Tsai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Fibrinolytic enzyme nattokinase was first extracted from a traditional Japanese fermented soybean food, Natto. Edible red alga Porphyra dentata shares similar high protein content with soybean. In this study, we successfully purify and characterize nattokinase from the cultural filtrate of P. dentata fermented by Bacillus subtilis N1. The crude enzyme was purified by ion-exchange and gel filtration to reach electrophoretic homogeneity. The nattokinase, which has a molecular weight of 46.5 kDa and an isoelectric point of 8.35, was stable from pH 5 to 9 and at temperatures up to 55°C, and it showed optimum enzyme activity at pH 8 and …

Consumption Of Oral Nicotine: Its Effects On The Reproductive System And Nicotine Metabolism Of Female Sprague-Dawley Rats, Swapnali Halder
Consumption Of Oral Nicotine: Its Effects On The Reproductive System And Nicotine Metabolism Of Female Sprague-Dawley Rats, Swapnali Halder
Student Theses and Dissertations
Smoking is a major preventable cause of death throughout the world and the need for cessation is unanimously supported by clinicians and scientists. Nicotine in cigarettes is believed to cause tobacco dependence and addiction and low doses of nicotine are found in nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) to mitigate withdrawal symptoms and improve cessation efforts. In addition to smoking associated health risks that are common for men and women, women smokers are more likely to suffer from pregnancy or other reproductive health related complications than non-smokers. Studies show that female smokers are more vulnerable to smoking, and find it harder to …

Parity Of Indigenous And Non-Indigenous Women In Brazil: Does The Reported Number Of Children Born Depend Upon Who Answers National Census Questions?, Ricardo Ventura Santos, João Luiz Bastos, Oswaldo Gonçalves Cruz, Luciene Aparecida Ferreira De Barros Longo, Nancy May Flowers, Nilza De Oliveira Martins Pereira
Publications and Research
Taking parity as the main analytic variable, the objective of this study is to investigate whether the patterns of response to national census questions in Brazil differ when Indigenous and non-Indigenous women are compared, taking into consideration whether the information was provided by the women directly or by a proxy respondent (another household member or a non-resident). We use data on children ever born to Indigenous and non-Indigenous women from two Brazilian regions, the Northeast and the North. Data on the number of household members, total household rooms, interviewee’s color/race, educational attainment, age, parity, and type of respondent were obtained …

Association Between Nutritional Awareness And Diet Quality: Evidence From The Observation Of Cardiovascular Risk Factors In Luxembourg (Oriscav-Lux) Study, Ala'a Alkerwi, Nicolas Sauvageot, Leoné Malan, Nitin Shivappa, James R. Hébert
Faculty Publications
This study examined the association between nutritional awareness and diet quality, as indicated by energy density, dietary diversity and adequacy to achieve dietary recommendations, while considering the potentially important role of socioeconomic status (SES). Data were derived from 1351 subjects, aged 18–69 years and enrolled in the ORISCAV-LUX study. Energy density score (EDS), dietary diversity score (DDS) and Recommendation Compliance Index (RCI) were calculated based on data derived from a food frequency questionnaire. Nutritional awareness was defined as self-perception of the importance assigned to eating balanced meals, and classified as high, moderate, or of little importance. Initially, a General Linear …
Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Autoimmune Deficiency Syndrome: A Pathophysiology And Cultural Perspective Of Treatment In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kari N. Stanley
Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Autoimmune Deficiency Syndrome: A Pathophysiology And Cultural Perspective Of Treatment In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kari N. Stanley
Senior Honors Theses
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that attacks the body’s immune system increasing risk for development of opportunistic infections and ultimately acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Without treatment HIV can run its course within 10 years; however, several categories of antiretroviral therapy now exist that have various mechanisms of action designed to stop a patient’s viral load from increasing so rapidly. The prevalence and risk for transmission is highest in Sub-Saharan Africa where resources and access to treatment is limited and underutilized. In order for health care providers to begin changing the statistics, cultural competence must be the foundation …

The Insecurities Of Underdevelopment: Case Studies Of Child Soldiers And Street Children, Victoria Leilani Busse
The Insecurities Of Underdevelopment: Case Studies Of Child Soldiers And Street Children, Victoria Leilani Busse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
After the Cold War, a paradigm shift occurred in the study of international conflict that led to a move away from traditional state-military centric security to make human beings the referent object of security instead. This paper uses the case studies of Sierra Leonean child soldiers and Brazilian street children to explore the links between human security and development. Children are already a vulnerable population, but they are made more insecure when they live in underdeveloped states. While poverty is a main causal factor in both these phenomena, other variables contribute to these social epidemics such as: weak governing structures, …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: Many studies have measured the intensity of end of life care. However, no summary of the measures used in the field is currently available. Objectives: To summarise features, characteristics of use and reported validity of measures used for evaluating intensity of end of life care. Methods: This was a systematic review according to PRISMA guidelines. We performed a comprehensive literature search in Ovid Medline, Embase, The Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews and reference lists published between 1990-2014. Two reviewers independently screened titles, abstracts, full texts and extracted data. Studies were eligible if they used a measure of end of …
Exercise In Individuals With Down Syndrome: A Brief Review, Rachel L. Kerstiens, Matt Green
Exercise In Individuals With Down Syndrome: A Brief Review, Rachel L. Kerstiens, Matt Green
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 8(2): 192-201, 2015. Research examining acute and long-term responses to exercise of individuals with Downs Syndrome (DS) is sparse. However, if this group experiences benefits associated with improved quantity or quality of life, it would be important to elucidate specific responses and discourage adoption of a sedentary lifestyle in individuals with DS. Specifically, these individuals have multiple blunted physiological responses to exercise both at the onset and termination of an acute exercise bout. Mechanistically, this could be rooted in hormonal responses which are blunted, in comparison to non-DS participants. Specific studies indicate individuals with …
