American Indian Women’S Health Perceptions And Health Promotion Behaviors, Sharon Boothe-Kepple Apr 2015

American Indian Women’S Health Perceptions And Health Promotion Behaviors, Sharon Boothe-Kepple

Dissertations

Background: Most problems affecting the health of American Indian women are related to lifestyles and health-related behaviors (Carter, Morse, Giruad, & Driskell, 2008; Linsley, Kane, & Owen, 2011). Understanding health promotion behaviors could decrease or prevent a number of chronic diseases that afflict the American Indian population; however, little is known about how American Indian women perceive illness, how they promote their health within the context of their culture, and the barriers they face.

Purpose: This study was designed to develop knowledge about the health perceptions and health promoting behaviors of American Indian women residing within the Chickasaw …

Honey Bee Workers That Are Pollen Stressed As Larvae Become Poor Foragers And Waggle Dancers As Adults, Hailey N. Scofield, Heather R. Mattila Apr 2015

Honey Bee Workers That Are Pollen Stressed As Larvae Become Poor Foragers And Waggle Dancers As Adults, Hailey N. Scofield, Heather R. Mattila

Faculty Research and Scholarship

The negative effects on adult behavior of juvenile undernourishment are well documented in vertebrates, but relatively poorly understood in invertebrates. We examined the effects of larval nutritional stress on the foraging and recruitment behavior of an economically important model invertebrate, the honey bee (Apis mellifera). Pollen, which supplies essential nutrients to developing workers, can become limited in colonies because of seasonal dearths, loss of foraging habitat, or intensive management. However, the functional consequences of being reared by pollen-stressed nestmates remain unclear, despite growing concern that poor nutrition interacts with other stressors to exacerbate colony decline. We manipulated nurse bees’ access …

Live Imaging Of The Ependymal Cilia In The Lateral Ventricles Of The Mouse Brain, Alzahra J. Al Omran, Hannah C. Saternos, Tongyu Liu, Surya M. Nauli, Wissam A. Aboualaiwi

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Multiciliated ependymal cells line the ventricles in the adult brain. Abnormal function or structure of ependymal cilia is associated with various neurological deficits. The current ex vivo live imaging of motile ependymal cilia technique allows for a detailed study of ciliary dynamics following several steps. These steps include: mice euthanasia with carbon dioxide according to protocols of The University of Toledo’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); craniectomy followed by brain removal and sagittal brain dissection with a vibratome or sharp blade to obtain very thin sections through the brain lateral ventricles, where the ependymal cilia can be visualized. …

Office of Community Partnerships Posters

The HELP study, which is a two-year study supported by a R21 grant from National Institute on Aging, is a direct extension of our previous work examining attentional demands of chronic pain in the older population. The HELP study is designed to compare two different exercise programs - simple body exercise and mind-body exercise, in their effects on pain symptoms, cognitive function, dual-task walking ability, and levels of pain-related biomarkers in community-dwelling older adults with multisite pain who are at risk of falling.

Sparc – A Community-Based Participatory Research Project With Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Richard Fleming

Office of Community Partnerships Posters

SPARC (Supporting Physical Activity and Recreation in the Community) aims to meet a community-identified need for more physical activity programming for youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). SPARC’s collaborative approach addresses the unique social, cognitive, behavioral, and physical needs of this growing population of children by infusing diverse perspectives into its model. This project incorporated a CBPR conceptual and methodological model, a strong community partnership, and an evidenced-based instructional approach, to develop and evaluate a community-based walking program for adolescents with ASD.

Longitudinal Neurostimulation In Older Adults Improves Working Memory, Kevin T. Jones, Jaclyn A. Stephens, Mahtab Alam, Marom Bikson, Marian E. Berryhill

Publications and Research

An increasing concern affecting a growing aging population is working memory (WM) decline. Consequently, there is great interest in improving or stabilizing WM, which drives expanded use of brain training exercises. Such regimens generally result in temporary WM benefits to the trained tasks but minimal transfer of benefit to untrained tasks. Pairing training with neurostimulation may stabilize or improve WM performance by enhancing plasticity and strengthening WM-related cortical networks. We tested this possibility in healthy older adults. Participants received 10 sessions of sham (control) or active (anodal, 1.5 mA) tDCS to the right prefrontal, parietal, or prefrontal/parietal (alternating) cortices. After …

Oncotherapeutic Application Of Inhibitors Of High-Affinity Glucose Transporters, George R. Simon Apr 2015

Oncotherapeutic Application Of Inhibitors Of High-Affinity Glucose Transporters, George R. Simon

USF Patents

The subject invention concerns materials and methods for treating oncological disorders in a person or animal using any agent or compound that inhibits uptake of glucose into a cell. The subject invention also concerns methods for inducing apoptosis and inhibiting the proliferation or survival of a cell. In one embodiment, the methods comprise administering an effective amount of an agent or compound that inhibits the activity of one or more glucose transporter proteins, such as Glut-1. An antibody that binds to and inhibits a glucose transporter protein can be used in the present methods.

The Effects Of Nutrition And Physical Activity Education On Knowledge And Glycemic Control Among Persons With Type 2 Diabetes, Alexandra Harris Apr 2015

The Effects Of Nutrition And Physical Activity Education On Knowledge And Glycemic Control Among Persons With Type 2 Diabetes, Alexandra Harris

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Diabetes affects millions of people worldwide. Approximately 29.1 million people or 9.3% of the United States population has diabetes (Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 2014). Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2010 and is projected by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be the seventh leading cause of death globally by 2030. The purpose of this evidence-based project was to provide nutrition and physical activity education in an effort to improve diabetes knowledge and glycemic control among persons with type 2 diabetes. Hemoglobin A1c levels and Diabetes Knowledge Test scores were compared from …

Proteolysis Of Virulence Regulator Toxr Is Associated With Entry Of Vibrio Cholerae Into A Dormant State, Salvador Almagro-Moreno, Tae K. Kim, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor Apr 2015

Proteolysis Of Virulence Regulator Toxr Is Associated With Entry Of Vibrio Cholerae Into A Dormant State, Salvador Almagro-Moreno, Tae K. Kim, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Vibrio cholerae O1 is a natural inhabitant of aquatic environments and causes the diarrheal disease, cholera. Two of its primary virulence regulators, TcpP and ToxR, are localized in the inner membrane. TcpP is encoded on the Vibrio Pathogenicity Island (VPI), a horizontally acquired mobile genetic element, and functions primarily in virulence gene regulation. TcpP has been shown to undergo regulated intramembrane proteolysis (RIP) in response to environmental conditions that are unfavorable for virulence gene expression. ToxR is encoded in the ancestral genome and is present in non-pathogenic strains of V. cholerae, indicating it has roles outside of the human …
