Media Influence And Third-Person Effect On Perception Formation About Immigrants In The State Of New York, Leslie S. Ramirez Soto Nov 2015

Media Influence And Third-Person Effect On Perception Formation About Immigrants In The State Of New York, Leslie S. Ramirez Soto

Theses

The present study examines hostile media bias and the third-person effect in those with anti-immigrant sentiments and those with pro-immigrant sentiments to determine the variables that influence their beliefs about immigrants and immigration in the state of New York. Based on McKeever, Riffe, & Dillman’s (2012) survey conducted in North Carolina, this study builds on their results to evaluate if factors such as geographic location, concentration of immigrants, or political inclinations can change the results. Five-hundred respondents from New York State participated in a survey about their attitudes concerning immigrants and immigration. Results confirm that those with anti-immigrant sentiment will …

Domestic Violence: I Am Not A Victim I Am Accountable, Modupe M. Ogunyemi Nov 2015

Domestic Violence: I Am Not A Victim I Am Accountable, Modupe M. Ogunyemi

Honors Theses

Domestic violence has a standard script of men harming women. With the guidance of The Women's Center's domestic violence training packet and Tracy Lett's play, August Osage County, this thesis will prove how art can reflect life and educate individuals on domestic abuse. August Osage County disrupts the standard description of the abuser and victim, provides examples of the six different types of abuse, and calls for individuals to take control of their domestic violent situation. In conclusion this thesis is requesting acountability from the perpetrators and the victims in domestic violent situations as a solution to reducing the …

Evidence Of Field-Evolved Resistance To Bifenthrin In Western Corn Rootworm (Diabrotica Virgifera Virgifera Leconte) Populations In Western Nebraska And Kansas, Adriano E. Pereira, Haichuan Wang, Sarah N. Zukoff, Lance Meinke, B. Wade French, Blair Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Pyrethroid insecticides have been used to control larvae or adults of the western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, a key pest of field corn in the United States. In response to reports of reduced efficacy of pyrethroids in WCR management programs in southwestern areas of Nebraska and Kansas the present research was designed to establish a baseline of susceptibility to the pyrethroid insecticide, bifenthrin, using susceptible laboratory populations and to compare this baseline with susceptibility of field populations. Concentration-response bioassays were performed to estimate the baseline susceptibility. From the baseline data, a diagnostic concentration (LC99) was determined and …

Mice Deficient In Endothelial Α5 Integrin Are Profoundly Resistant To Experimental Ischemic Stroke, Jill Roberts, Leon De Hoog, Gregory J. Bix Nov 2015

Mice Deficient In Endothelial Α5 Integrin Are Profoundly Resistant To Experimental Ischemic Stroke, Jill Roberts, Leon De Hoog, Gregory J. Bix

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Stroke is a disease in dire need of better therapies. We have previously shown that a fragment of the extracellular matrix proteoglycan, perlecan, has beneficial effects following cerebral ischemia via the α5β1 integrin receptor. We now report that endothelial cell selective α5 integrin deficient mice (α5 KO) are profoundly resistant to ischemic infarct after transient middle cerebral artery occlusion. Specifically, α5 KOs had little to no infarct 2–3 days post-stroke, whereas controls had an increase in mean infarct volume over the same time period as expected. Functional outcome is also improved in the α5 KOs compared with controls. Importantly, no …

Effect Of Self-Interruption And External Interruption On Error Detection, Sze Yuen Yau Nov 2015

Effect Of Self-Interruption And External Interruption On Error Detection, Sze Yuen Yau

Lingnan Theses

Knowledge workers are frequently bombarded with interruption and are required to constant multitask. Previous observational studies found that frequent interrupted activities cause more errors and induce feelings of stress and frustration. Therefore, the aim of the current research is to investigate how interruption affects error detection performance. Current error detection research focused on the effectiveness of different checking methods. In this thesis, we concentrate on the psychological mechanism of error detection. A series of experiments was carried out to examine the effects of self-interruption (i.e. the pilot study and Study I) and external interruption (Study II) on error detection performance …

Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices (Kap) On Rift Valley Fever Among Pastoralist Communities Of Ijara District, North Eastern Kenya, Ismail H. Abdi, Hippolyte D. Affognon, Anthony K. Wanjoya, Washington Onyango-Ouma, Rosemary Sang Nov 2015

Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices (Kap) On Rift Valley Fever Among Pastoralist Communities Of Ijara District, North Eastern Kenya, Ismail H. Abdi, Hippolyte D. Affognon, Anthony K. Wanjoya, Washington Onyango-Ouma, Rosemary Sang

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Outbreaks of Rift Valley fever (RVF), a mosquito-borne viral zoonosis, have previously been associated with unusually heavy rainfall and extensive flooding. The disease is a serious public health problem in Africa and the Middle East, and is a potential global health threat. In Kenya, outbreaks of the disease have disproportionately affected impoverished pastoralist communities. This study sought to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding RVF among the pastoralists of North Eastern Kenya, and to establish the determinants of KAP on RVF. A cross-sectional study involving 392 pastoralists living in Ijara district (Masalani and Ijara wards) was carried out …

The Application Of Industry Standards As An Alternative To In-House Proprietary Standards Within The Aec Iindustry, Robert Moore, Alan Hore, Barry Mcauley Nov 2015

The Application Of Industry Standards As An Alternative To In-House Proprietary Standards Within The Aec Iindustry, Robert Moore, Alan Hore, Barry Mcauley

Conference papers

The move from traditional 2D Computer Aided Design (CAD) practices towards Building Information Modelling (BIM) has witnessed some practices trying to adopt and update their own in-house CAD standards. These standards are wholly inadequate for working in a collaborative BIM environment and mean that they repetitively create and recreate local, non-reusable, non-interoperable solutions to the same problems, which leads to the employees potentially having to learn a new collaborative process every time they have to work with a new project team. Collaborative standards help teams produce information through a standardised process, so as to ensure the same form and quality …

Fitting In: A Study Of Lesbian Mothers In Rural Southeastern Michigan, Allison Amadea Ranusch Nov 2015

Fitting In: A Study Of Lesbian Mothers In Rural Southeastern Michigan, Allison Amadea Ranusch

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Lesbian parents residing in rural and small communities have received little scholarly attention. The primary focus of the existing research has highlighted the isolation experienced by lesbian parents within such locations, but little examination has been made of other issues or their coping mechanisms. This study was designed to address these deficits in knowledge and understanding through a series of eleven in-depth, qualitative interviews. Several stigma management strategies were discovered. For example, it was reported that engaging in farming and trade helped lesbian mothers "fit in" enough to gain some level of acceptance from their immediate neighbors. Stigma was also …

A Single, Complete Touch: Population Health, The Health Contact Center, And The Patient Experience, Fran Horner, Susan Marks

Patient Experience Journal

As healthcare organizations turn to population health in order to more effectively manage the health and well-being of their patients, many need to ensure that these new strategies include a directive to improve the patient experience. Fortunately, healthcare systems can turn to an existing entity within its ranks, the health contact center, in order to execute a successful strategy and ensure that the individual patient never feels lost amongst the population crowd. Fran Horner from Singola Consulting and Susan Marks from Amati Health explore the ways in which population health and the health contact center work collaboratively to keep patient …

Managing Patient Expectations At Emergency Department Triage, Shital Shah, Anay Patel, Dino P. Rumoro, Samuel Hohmann, Francis Fullam

Patient Experience Journal

Emergency departments (ED) overcrowding, long wait, and uncomfortable waiting room conditions may lower perceived quality of the patient experience and satisfaction. This study investigates the relationship between patient satisfaction and communication of expected wait times, at the point of triage. A pre-post (11/4/ 2008 – 2/5/2009) group design with convenience sample (n=1,209) of all discharge adult ED patients was utilized for this study. A static expected wait time model (i.e., average wait time + one standard deviation) based on time of the day, day of the week and triage levels was employed to communicating expected wait time at triage while …

Patient Leadership: Taking Patient Experience To The Next Level?, David Mcnally, Steve Sharples, Georgina Craig, Dr Anita Goraya, Frcgp

Patient Experience Journal

NHS England commissioned the project described in this article to explore how patients and carers can, acting as leaders, make a real difference in improving experience of care. The work was carried out on a collaborative basis, co-designing the scope of the research with patient leaders and commissioners. We gathered case examples across England that had involved patient leaders in using patient and carer feedback to improve experience of care. A Patient Leaders Expert Advisory Group selected four case examples that were visited to undertake a more detailed study and subsequently discussed and agreed the key learning points and conclusions. …
