Now, We Hear Through A Voice Darkly: New Media And Narratology In Cinematic Art, James Anthony Ricci Nov 2015

Now, We Hear Through A Voice Darkly: New Media And Narratology In Cinematic Art, James Anthony Ricci

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the intersection of new media and narrative, as it is presented through a cinematic aesthetic. The narrative language of film is analyzed through the theoretical framework of Bakhtin’s concepts of Heteroglossia, Chronotope, and Dialogism. Bakhtin’s ideas of classifying language act as strong tools for demonstrating how cinematic narrative can inform and alter the perception of its spectators. Lev Manovich’s principles of New Media, specifically Variability, Modularity, and Automation are also utilized to demonstrate how cinema is a constantly evolving paradigm.

Chapter one focuses on the theoretical terminology, outlining the conceptual definitions and illustrating their relevance in precise …

Personal Jurisdiction Based On The Local Effects Of Intentional Misconduct, Allan Erbsen Nov 2015

Personal Jurisdiction Based On The Local Effects Of Intentional Misconduct, Allan Erbsen

William & Mary Law Review

Intentional misconduct frequently has extraterritorial consequences. Terrorist attacks, toxic pollution, civil rights violations, and other intentional torts can cause harm within a state despite originating outside the state. Those harms raise a vexing constitutional question: when do the local effects of intentional wrongdoing authorize personal jurisdiction over a defendant whose conduct occurred outside the forum? The answer has several significant implications. Granting or denying jurisdiction can support or undermine regulatory interests by allocating power between states, imposes burdens on the parties that can impede access to justice, and alters risk assessments that shape both socially desirable and socially destructive behavior.

The Costs Of Easy Victory, Michael E. Waterstone Nov 2015

The Costs Of Easy Victory, Michael E. Waterstone

William & Mary Law Review

Studies of law and social change often focus on areas of intense conflict, including abortion, gun rights, and various issues around race, gender, and sexual orientation. Each of these has entered the culture wars, inspiring fierce resistance and organized countermovements. A reasonable assumption might be that social change in less controversial areas might be easier. In this Article, I suggest that it is not that simple. Using the disability rights movement, I demonstrate how flying under the radar leads to unappreciated obstacles. The disability rights movement had a relatively easy path to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act …

Meeting The Needs Of A Culturally And Racially Diverse Student Body Online, Gretchen Elizabeth Hormel Nov 2015

Meeting The Needs Of A Culturally And Racially Diverse Student Body Online, Gretchen Elizabeth Hormel

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

The citizens of the United States contribute a rich blend that includes (but is not limited to) cultural heritage, race, gender, sexuality, and socio-economic backgrounds. Therefore, it is integral that online curriculum meets the challenge of effectively communicating with a diverse student body, as well as effectively facilitates a democratic learning environment. An online academic environment that is respectful and responsive to diverse backgrounds and perspectives is oftentimes referred to as a democratic online learning environment. Research indicates that seven components make up a democratic online learning environment and include: 1 - Culturally competent staff (Thorpe, 2002, p. 115, Ramsay, …

Microrna Molecular Profiling From Matched Tumor And Bio-Fluids In Bladder Cancer, David A. Armstrong, Benjamin B. Green, John D. Seigne, Alan R. Schned, Carmen Marsit

Dartmouth Scholarship

MicroRNAs have been identified as potential cancer biomarkers due to their presence and stability in many body fluids including urine and plasma, but the relationship of the pattern of expression of these messengers across various biological media has not been addressed and could provide important information in order to translate these biomarkers for epidemiologic or clinical use. We analyzed microRNA of matched FFPE-tumor tissue, plasma, urine exosomes (n = 16) and WBCs (n = 11) from patients with bladder cancer, using Nanostring miRNA assays and droplet digital PCR for validation. Pearson correlations were used to compare expression between …

Ensuring Ada Compliance For Library Databases, Shaden Melky, Laura Delancey

Kentucky Convergence Conference

Electronic library content must be accessible to students with disabilities, however many institutions have focused on accessibility of physical facilities without considering the requirements for online information. Western Kentucky University (WKU) developed a required, automated program to audit WKU Libraries’ electronic content including, the website and library database vendors. Additionally, WKU began requesting documentation of accessibility features in the form of a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). This presentation will focus on both our internal auditing efforts and the challenges of obtaining accurate vendor documentation.

What I Taught My Stem Instructor About Teaching: What A Deaf Student Hears That Others Cannot, Annemarie Ross, Randy K. Yerrick

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

Overall, science teaching at the university level has remained in a relatively static state. There is much research and debate among university faculty regarding the most effective methods of teaching science. But it remains largely rhetoric. The traditional lecture model in STEM higher education is limping along in its march toward inclusion and equity. The NGSS and Common Core reform efforts do little to help university science teachers to change their orientation from largely lecture-driven practice with laboratory supplements. While it is impossible to address all diverse student groups, the need for accommodations tend to be overlooked. As a Deaf …

The Divergent And Evolving Legal Pathways Of Future Space Traffic Management Collaboration, Michael S. Dodge Nov 2015

The Divergent And Evolving Legal Pathways Of Future Space Traffic Management Collaboration, Michael S. Dodge

Space Traffic Management Conference

Collaboration in space traffic management efforts is critical to the successful continued use of the outer space environment, and exploration and utilization of space assets will depend upon structured legal guidance. While STM is notionally evolving at the international level, appropriate attention must also be given to national strategies. This paper will elucidate that extant space traffic management methodologies are developing along two disparate tracks. These pathways, which here are termed the international-collaborative and sectarian methods, are reflective of the needs of the international community and intrastate interests respectively. The paper will attempt to show that in the near-term, these …

Innovations For Insurers In Space Traffic Management And Weather Forecasting, Andrea Harrington Llm

Space Traffic Management Conference

Space activities are expanding. The number and types of actors who are involved with outer space is growing. This expansion has significant technological, environmental, and financial implications for the industry. After the research and development of a satellite itself and the provision of launch services, insurance is the third greatest expense to put a satellite into orbit. Though 95% of insured satellites in the last few years have been in geostationary orbit, the greater use of other Earth orbits is leading to an increase in demand for insurance in these orbits.

There are a number of innovative actions that space …

Space Act 2015: Towards Recognizing The Need For Space Traffic Management Regulation?, Kim Ellis Nov 2015

Space Act 2015: Towards Recognizing The Need For Space Traffic Management Regulation?, Kim Ellis

Space Traffic Management Conference

Space Traffic Management can be described as technical and regulatory provisions required for guaranteeing safe and interference free operations during launch, suborbital and orbital space activities and atmospheric re-entry. During the last decade, the Federal Aviation Administration has recognized that the exponential increase in the rate of development of space technology will create future challenges associated with the resultant increase in volume of space traffic. While the introduction of new technology is always a challenge for regulatory frameworks, the ‘Space Act 2015’ was passed by the house with a clear majority in May 2015. This legislation proposes to support industry …

The Marriage Of Figaro

Taylor Theatre Playbills

Taylor Theatre presents an original translation of Mozart's comic-opera, "The Marriage of Figaro."

Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" whisks us through the events of one crazy day as Figaro, the Lord's valet, tries to wed Susanna, the Lady's maid, before their philandering master can get to her first. Filled with Mozart's glorious music, The Marriage of Figaro is widely regarded to be one of the greatest comic operas ever written. Our production will see its plot of intrigue, mistaken identities, and unexpected revelations unravel in early 20th Century England in which the servants who live downstairs are perfectly capable of …
