Unidirectional Reflectionless Propagation In Plasmonic Waveguide-Cavity Systems At Exceptional Points, Yin Huang, Georgios Veronis, Changjun Min Nov 2015

Unidirectional Reflectionless Propagation In Plasmonic Waveguide-Cavity Systems At Exceptional Points, Yin Huang, Georgios Veronis, Changjun Min

Faculty Publications

We design a non-parity-Time-symmetric plasmonic waveguidecavity system, consisting of two metal-dielectric-metal stub resonators side coupled to a metal-dielectric-metal waveguide, to form an exceptional point, and realize unidirectional reflectionless propagation at the optical communication wavelength. The contrast ratio between the forward and backward reflection almost reaches unity. We show that the presence of material loss in the metal is critical for the realization of the unidirectional reflectionlessness in this plasmonic system. We investigate the realized exceptional point, as well as the associated physical effects of level repulsion, crossing and phase transition. We also show that, by periodically cascading the unidirectional reflectionless …

#Networkedglobe: Making The Connection Between Social Media And Intercultural Technical Communication, Laura Anne Ewing Nov 2015

#Networkedglobe: Making The Connection Between Social Media And Intercultural Technical Communication, Laura Anne Ewing

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Preparing students of technical communication in the twenty-first century means training them to rhetorically utilize a wide variety of online tools. Technical communicators are now required to employ social media applications on a daily basis to communicate with clients, consumers, colleagues, and other organizations. These online modes have also opened the door to global communication wider and continue to present opportunities and challenges to technical communicators worldwide. Using Japan as a model, this dissertation sought to demonstrate a rhetorical exigency for teaching intercultural social media communication strategies to future technical communicators in the United States. The goal of this dissertation …

Hepatic Nutrient And Hormonal Regulation Of The Pancreatic-Derived Factor (Pander) Promoter, Whitney Ratliff Nov 2015

Hepatic Nutrient And Hormonal Regulation Of The Pancreatic-Derived Factor (Pander) Promoter, Whitney Ratliff

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

PANcreatic-DERived factor (PANDER, FAM3B) has been shown to regulate glycemic levels via interactions with both pancreatic islets and the liver. Although PANDER is predominantly expressed from the endocrine pancreas, recent work has provided sufficient evidence that the liver may also be an additional tissue source of PANDER production. At physiological levels, PANDER is capable of disrupting insulin signaling and promoting increased hepatic glucose production. As shown in some animal models, strong expression of PANDER, induced by viral delivery within the liver, induces hepatic steatosis. However, no studies to date have explicitly characterized the transcriptional regulation of PANDER from the liver. …

Field Recording Or Field Observation?: Audio Meets Method In Qualitative Research, Sam Smiley Nov 2015

Field Recording Or Field Observation?: Audio Meets Method In Qualitative Research, Sam Smiley

The Qualitative Report

The field observation, an ethnographic practice of collecting data and information about a given social setting and situation is often used in preliminary research to have an understanding of the community one is researching. However, from an artist/musician's perspective, the field observation has many commonalities with techniques used in audio field recording. How can field recording be used in parallel with field observations to explore and understand a community through art? This essay will begin with a comparison of field observations and field recordings as methods in their own disciplines, and continue with the concept of “attention” in art, music, …

Cost Effectiveness Analysis Of Year 2 Of An Elementary School-Located Influenza Vaccination Program-Results From A Randomized Controlled Trial., Byung-Kwang Yoo, Sharon Humiston, Peter G. Szilagyi, Stanley J. Schaffer, Christine Long, Maureen Kolasa

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: School-located vaccination against influenza (SLV-I) has the potential to improve current suboptimal influenza immunization coverage for U.S. school-aged children. However, little is known about SLV-I's cost-effectiveness. The objective of this study is to establish the cost-effectiveness of SLV-I based on a two-year community-based randomized controlled trial (Year 1: 2009-2010 vaccination season, an unusual H1N1 pandemic influenza season, and Year 2: 2010-2011, a more typical influenza season).

METHODS: We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis on a two-year randomized controlled trial of a Western New York SLV-I program. SLV-I clinics were offered in 21 intervention elementary schools (Year 1 n = 9,027; …

Person To Person In France, Luis Santillan-Guzman

2015-16 Field Notes

While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield College write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Luis Santillan-Guzman describes his observations during his study abroad program at the American University Center of Provence in Marseilles, France.

Ikamva Youth: Tutor Engagement Plan, Kate Lassalle-Klein, Jake Prince Nov 2015

Ikamva Youth: Tutor Engagement Plan, Kate Lassalle-Klein, Jake Prince

Miller Center Fellowship

IkamvaYouth empowers South African students from under-resourced and under-performing secondary schools to achieve academic results competitive with those of the best-funded schools in the country. The organisation is able to offer extensive tutoring services free of charge due to the hard work of its committed volunteer tutors. As more students, called “learners,” flock to join the programme and IkamvaYouth grows, it faces challenges in attracting and maintaining an optimal amount of volunteer tutors.

We conducted a quantitative online survey of tutors’ demographic information, backgrounds, and experiences with the organisation. Of IkamvaYouth’s approximately 300 tutors, 223 responded. We conducted tutor and …

Motivation Of Japanese Descending Diaspora Entrepreneurs, Aki Harima Nov 2015

Motivation Of Japanese Descending Diaspora Entrepreneurs, Aki Harima

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

This paper explores entrepreneurial motivation of Japanese diaspora entrepreneurs conducting their business in emerging countries. While diaspora entrepreneurs play an increasingly significant role in the modern transnationalizing economy (Newland & Tanaka, 2010), previous scholars have predominantly focused on those who originate from developing countries and migrate to more developed ones. There are, however, also entrepreneurs who originate from developed countries and establish their business in emerging countries. These people are almost invisible in the previous research even though their entrepreneurial activities are assumed to have positive impacts on the local economy. They transfer knowledge, resources and information from developed countries …

The Effects Of International Study Tours In The Decision Of Students To Go To Work Abroad – The Example Of The Ggs’ Ist To Turkey And Russia, Rafael González, Christopher Stehr

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

Until now, much of the research on International Study Tours has focused on the learning opportunities and intercultural advantages of participating in such mobility programmes. However, there has been limited literature on the relationship between joining these study trips and the motivation that students might get to start working abroad. This new research promises many advantages for our globalized world as more and more companies struggle to get the right people at the right place – sometimes without success. The possibility of participating in such a study programme could not only contribute to preparing a future world manager, but it …
