A Java Framework For Computer Vision, Stephen Sheridan
A Java Framework For Computer Vision, Stephen Sheridan
The ITB Journal
This paper outlines a framework implemented entirely in Java that attempts to give students exposure to computer vision systems from a practical standpoint. Various tools and technologies are introduced that will allow a student to acquire an input image through a WebCam, extract useful information from that input image and finally, attempt to make sense of the input.

Learning Through Dialogue (Ltd) - A Toolkit To Support The Process Of Planning For Effective Use Of Dialogue In Learning, Matt Smith, John Cook, Martin Oliver
The ITB Journal
This paper presents an implementation of a decision support system to help tutors think about ways of using dialogue to support learning. The approach adopted has been to develop a software toolkit around a knowledgebase of dialogue methods, to assist tutors in the reflection required during the planning and design of dialogue to support learning.

The Jam Suite - A Voice-Enabled Network-Based Virtual Band Application, Brian Nolan, Martin Cummins, Irene Flanagan, Niall O’Brien
The ITB Journal
The Java Audio Music-suite (J.A.M. for short) is a suite of applications that provides tools and audio processing utilities for musicians. It’s core functionality includes a means whereby musicians who are geographically dispersed can play music together. An additional utility determines the actual musical notes from a piece of music using Fourier Transform techniques. All of these functions are complemented by a voiceenabled, animated help agent that takes in voice commands using speech recognition and reports errors via text-to-speech technology.

Students are sent abroad to “become sensitive leaders in our changing world,” states the Gettysburg College Center for Global Education’s mission statement. We are asked to “foster global thinking and to instill a compassionate respect for others and our world.” Many students use this time to explore their true selves with hopes of not having to think too deeply about the life that they’ve left behind. Transport Of Heat Activated Persulfate And Its Application For In-Situ Chemical Oxidation Of Residual Trichloroethylene, Lauren Dekker Quig
Transport Of Heat Activated Persulfate And Its Application For In-Situ Chemical Oxidation Of Residual Trichloroethylene, Lauren Dekker Quig
Dissertations and Theses
In situ chemical oxidation is a promising technology for the remediation of persistent subsurface contamination. Increasingly, the persulfate ion is being studied for use in these systems, both on its own as a strong oxidant and as the precursor to the even more reactive sulfate radical. Persulfate has been shown to treat a wide range of contaminants, from traditional Superfund contaminants such as chlorinated solvents to emerging pharmaceutical contaminants. Additionally, persulfate ISCO can be tailored to site and pollutant specific characteristics based on the method of persulfate activation (e.g., energy and catalysis activation) to the sulfate radical. Thermal activation of …

Background: Simple observational assessment of movement is a potentially low-cost method for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury screening and prevention. Although many individuals utilize some form of observational assessment of movement, there are currently no substantial data on group skill differences in observational screening of ACL injury risk. Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to compare various groups’ abilities to visually assess ACL injury risk as well as the associated strategies and ACL knowledge levels. The hypothesis was that sports medicine professionals would perform better than coaches and exercise science academics/students and that these subgroups would all perform better …

Users are sharing 70 million photos per day on the Instagram photo-sharing network. Yahoo Answers question-answering community has more than 1 billion posted answers. The meteoric rise in popularity has made OSNs important social platforms for computer-mediated communications and embedded themselves into society’s daily life, with direct consequences to the offline world and activities. OSNs are built on a foundation of trust, where users …
Near-Field Microwave Microscopy For Surface And Subsurface Characterization Of Materials, Maria Fernanda Cordoba Erazo
Near-Field Microwave Microscopy For Surface And Subsurface Characterization Of Materials, Maria Fernanda Cordoba Erazo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents an investigation on the capabilities of Near-Field Microwave Microscopy (NFMM) for the characterization of surface and subsurface materials. Subsurface characterization refers to the detection, differentiation and imaging of dielectric, and metallic features that are coated with an insulating layer. The design, simulation and modeling, and testing of a dielectric resonator (DR)-based NFMM and a coaxial transmission line resonator-based NFMM are discussed in detail in this work. Additionally, materials differentiation and imaging capabilities of each microscope are examined using several bulk samples, liquids, GaAs MMIC circuits, and gold/glass testing patterns.
The 5.7 GHz DR-based NFMM uses a microwave …
The State Of Oral Health On The African Continent, Megan E. Josefczyk
The State Of Oral Health On The African Continent, Megan E. Josefczyk
Senior Honors Theses
The African continent has continuously suffered from poverty, poor sanitation, and malnutrition, leaving it an open feeding ground for infectious disease and premature death. Along with poor oral hygiene and an unavailability of dental clinics, oral disease is allowed to thrive and cause great harm. In the last two decades, the World Health Organization and others have tried to implement better systems of oral health care for the African people and have advocated for more well-trained dentists, dental clinics, equipment, and affordable dental care. Progress has been made in some African countries, but the continent is still in serious need …
