Perceptions Of Powdered Alcohol And Intentions To Use: An Exploratory Qualitative Assessment Of Potential Palcohol Use By Young Adults, John Stogner, Julie Baldwin, Timothy Brown, Taylor Chick Dec 2015

Perceptions Of Powdered Alcohol And Intentions To Use: An Exploratory Qualitative Assessment Of Potential Palcohol Use By Young Adults, John Stogner, Julie Baldwin, Timothy Brown, Taylor Chick

College of Humanities and Public Affairs

While there seems to be growing media intrigue over atypical forms of alcohol use, the utilization of the majority of novel consumption methods (e.g., eyeballing, slimming, alcohol without liquid (AWOL)) seems minimal. In 2014, however, several outlets suggested that powdered alcohol would soon surface as a threat to public safety. The impetus of these fears was the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau’s approval for Lipsmark LLC to package a powdered alcohol product named "Palcohol". Palcohol has yet to reach store shelves, but public outcry has been intense. Despite this reaction, little is known about whether the population will …

When Is It Mental?, Stuart Glennan Dec 2015

When Is It Mental?, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Most philosophical debate over mental causation has been concerned with reconciling commonsense intuitions that there are causal interactions between the mental and the physical with philosophical theories of the nature of the mental that seem to suggest otherwise. My concern is with a different and more practical problem. We often confront some cognitive, affective, or bodily phenomenon, and wonder about its source – its etiology or its underlying causal basis. For instance, you might wonder whether your queasiness due to something you ate, or whether it is just nervousness, or whether your aunt’s memory loss is a neurological problem or …

How "Global" Are Global History Teachers? Secondary Social Studies Teachers' Understandings Of Global Awareness And Global Education, Ardyth L. Watson Dec 2015

How "Global" Are Global History Teachers? Secondary Social Studies Teachers' Understandings Of Global Awareness And Global Education, Ardyth L. Watson

Dissertations - ALL

Although global history has been a part of the discipline of social studies in New York State for a number of years, the inclusion of global education and skills has been less prevalent in the discipline. This lack of global perspectives in education has proven to be detrimental to the global awareness of American students. (Roper for National Geographic Foundation, 2006; Harvard University, 2004; Holm and Farber, 2002; Clarke, 2004). Global history teachers play a key role in the dissemination of global content that may contribute to increasing global awareness of students. Yet teachers, themselves, may have limited global awareness …

Effects Of Processing And Medical Sterilization Techniques On 3d-Printed And Molded Polylactic Acid, Mariah Nicole Geritano Dec 2015

Effects Of Processing And Medical Sterilization Techniques On 3d-Printed And Molded Polylactic Acid, Mariah Nicole Geritano

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Manufacturing industries have evolved tremendously in the past decade with the introduction of Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D Printing. The medical device industry has been a leader in adapting this new technology into research and development. 3D printing enables medical devices and implants to become more customizable, patient specific, and allows for low production numbers. This study compares the mechanical and thermal properties of traditionally manufactured parts versus parts manufactured through 3D printing before and after sterilization, and the ability of an FDM printer to produce reliable, identical samples. It was found that molded samples and 100% infill …

Biotinylated Self-Assembled Micelles As Potential Vehicles For Targeted Anti-Cancer Drug Delivery, Weiyi Li Dec 2015

Biotinylated Self-Assembled Micelles As Potential Vehicles For Targeted Anti-Cancer Drug Delivery, Weiyi Li

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Chemotherapy is one of the most commonly used cancer treatments. However, many side effects could occur due to the non-specific bindings of extremely toxic anti-cancer drugs to healthy cells and organs. Targeted delivery has been developed to enhance the selectivity of drug delivery vehicle and minimize side effects of chemotherapy. In this study, the hydrophobically modified glycol chitosan (HGC) micelle was further modified with a biotin-avidin-biotin (B-A-B) strategy to improve the tumor-selective ability of HGC. Firstly, HGC was biotinylated either at the amine groups (NH2) or the hydroxyl groups (OH) on the chitosan main chain. Then the biotin-4-fluorescein, as a …

Structurally Integrated, Damage Tolerant Thermal Spray Coatings: Processing Effects On Surface And System Functionalities, Andrew Vackel Dec 2015

Structurally Integrated, Damage Tolerant Thermal Spray Coatings: Processing Effects On Surface And System Functionalities, Andrew Vackel

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Thermal Spray (TS) coatings have seen extensive application as protective surfaces to enhance the service life of substrates prone to damage in their operating environment (wear, corrosion, heat etc.). With the advent of high velocity TS processes, the ability to deposit highly dense (>99%) metallic and cermet coatings has further enhanced the protective ability of these coatings. In addition to surface functionality, the influence of the coating application on the mechanical performance of a coated component is of great concern when such a component will experience either static or cyclic loading during service. Using a process mapping methodology, the …

Defect Studies And Optimization Of Cvd Grown Boron Phosphide Films On Different Substrates, Xuejing Wang Dec 2015

Defect Studies And Optimization Of Cvd Grown Boron Phosphide Films On Different Substrates, Xuejing Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Boron phosphide (BP), a light III-V indirect semiconductor compound with medium band gap of 2.0 eV, has emerged as a promising material with its applications in solid-state neutron technology and semiconductor devices in extreme conditions. Since bulk BP is unavailable, heteroepitaxial film growth is being attempted on various substrates including silicon, silicon carbide (4H, 6H, 3C polytypes), AlN and sapphire of different orientations to determine the best substrate for growing high quality thin films. By investigating the defects (e.g. twins and grain boundaries, threading dislocations, stacking faults, inclusions) present in the BP epilayer using synchrotron white beam X-ray topography (SWBXT), …

Conical Kahler-Einstein Metrics And Its Applications, Chengjian Yao Dec 2015

Conical Kahler-Einstein Metrics And Its Applications, Chengjian Yao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this dissertation we prove certain deformation behaviors of Kahler-Einstein metrics with singularities. Based on smooth approximation and a priori estimates, we first give a new proof to Donaldson's Openness Theorem of deforming the cone angle of conical Kahler-Einstein metric on smooth Fano manifold, and prove a direct generalization to conical Kahler-Einstein metrics along simple normal crossing pluri-anti-canonical divisors on smooth Fano manifold. Then we use continuity method to study the deformation of weak conical Kahler-Einstein metric on Q-Fano variety. The idea of our new proof above is generalized to prove the openness part of the continuity method argument, while …

Mutilated Bodies And Memories Of Violence: Displacements And Contestations Of Representations Of Violence, In Contemporary Video Art And Photography In Colombia, 1993-1998., Juan Carlos Guerrero Hernandez Dec 2015

Mutilated Bodies And Memories Of Violence: Displacements And Contestations Of Representations Of Violence, In Contemporary Video Art And Photography In Colombia, 1993-1998., Juan Carlos Guerrero Hernandez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

How do contemporary artworks address and give visibility to the wounded body without reinvigorating trauma, without repeating the spectacular and homogenizing strategies used by the media? How do artworks move beyond denunciation to aesthetically and historically name and rearticulate bodily violence? And fundamentally, how do artworks offer an historical understanding of the political historicity of contemporary violence without uncritically resorting to myth and structural trauma? We intend to answer these questions within the context of art and violence in Colombia in 1990s. In this direction, we examine four artworks produced between 1993 and 1998, by artists Alberto Baraya, Clemencia Echeverri, …

Multi-Model Validation Assessment Of Groundwater Flow Simulation Models Using Area Metric Approach, Omkar Aphale Dec 2015

Multi-Model Validation Assessment Of Groundwater Flow Simulation Models Using Area Metric Approach, Omkar Aphale

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A model's validity, or its goodness-of-fit to the real world system, is commonly assessed by quantifying the level of agreement between the observed data and their corresponding model-simulated outputs. However, the observed data could be uncertain given inaccuracies in the observational tools and techniques while the model-simulated outputs may be incomparable since models are simplified versions, and not exact replicas, of the real world system. This limits the abilities of the traditional validation approaches. Here, an alternative approach called the area metric (Ferson et al. 2008) was adopted for multi-model validation assessment. This approach quantifies the level of agreement between …

A Targeted Crispr-Cas9 Screen In Aml Cells, Sam Blake Chiappone Dec 2015

A Targeted Crispr-Cas9 Screen In Aml Cells, Sam Blake Chiappone

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The genetic underpinnings of a cancer are key to understanding the etiology of the disease and thus to providing a cure, because any robust cure of the disease will need to target a therapeutic window, a gene or a group of genes that are different between the cancerous cells and the normal cells. The research shown in this thesis gives insight into the genetic causes of acute myelogenous leukemia in an attempt to find a therapeutic window for this disease. A genetic screen using CRISPR-Cas9 is designed and conducted in a cell line designated RN 2-5 that was determined to …

Class Iii Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase Vps34 In Autophagy, Endocytosis, And Nutrient-Induced Signaling, Nadia Jaber Dec 2015

Class Iii Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase Vps34 In Autophagy, Endocytosis, And Nutrient-Induced Signaling, Nadia Jaber

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Vps34 is the sole member of the Class III phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks) identified in mammals thus far. It phosphorylates phosphatidylinositol (PI) to generate PI(3)P on intracellular membranes. Previous work has suggested that Vps34 is important for the protein degradation pathways of autophagy and endocytosis, as well as nutrient-induced mTOR signaling. However, due to the pluripotent nature of available PI3K inhibitors, a clear understanding of the functions of mammalian Vps34 remains to be illustrated. To investigate the precise role of Vps34 in these processes, I have generated and characterized mice with conditional genetic ablation of Vps34. Mice with liver or heart-specific …

The Role Of The Scribble Protein Complex In The Regulation Of Dendrite Formation, Bingru Sun Dec 2015

The Role Of The Scribble Protein Complex In The Regulation Of Dendrite Formation, Bingru Sun

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

During neuronal development, the neuronal cell polarizes to specify the structures of axons and dendrites. This polarized architecture regulates the input/output functions of the neuronal cell. In my thesis, I studied the molecular mechanisms of dendrite formation. My main hypothesis was that dendrite specification results from local elevation of the cGMP signal. Soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) is the major enzyme for the synthesis of cGMP in the embryonic brain. I study the molecular mechanism that activates sGC and leads to dendrite specification during neuronal polarization.Scribble is a scaffold protein, part of a polarity complex that establish apical-basal polarity in epithelial …

Three-Dimensional Macroporous All-Carbon Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Gaurav Lalwani Dec 2015

Three-Dimensional Macroporous All-Carbon Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Gaurav Lalwani

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Assembly of carbon nanomaterials into three-dimensional (3D) architectures is necessary to harness their unique physiochemical properties for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. In this dissertation, fabrication and characterization of 3D chemically crosslinked macro-sized (5-8 mm height and 4-6 mm diameter) porous carbon nanotube (CNT) scaffolds, their in vitro cytocompatibility and interactions with human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are reported. Single- or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs or MWCNTs) scaffolds were fabricated using a novel radical initiated thermal crosslinking and annealing method using SWCNTs or MWCNTs as nanoscale building blocks. The scaffolds possess macroscale interconnected pores, robust structural integrity, stability, and …

Comparison Of Sustained Cognitive Training Vs. Cardiovascular Exercise On Cognitive Decline And Pathology In A Vascular Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease | Comparison Of Sustained Cognitive Training Vs. Cardiovascular Exercise On Cognitive Decline And Pathology In A Vascular Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Maria Elizabeth Anderson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Despite numerous advances in our understanding of the mechanisms that underlie Alzheimer’s disease (AD), there is still no cure, and the disease continues to pose a severe public health problem. It has become clear that many factors, including certain lifestyle practices, may contribute to the development of the disease; however, much remains to be learned about how lifestyle factors may prevent or delay cognitive decline. Unlike human epidemiological studies, murine models can provide clearer inferences about causality. The present studies focus on two lifestyle factors: cognitive enrichment and cardio-vascular exercise. Specifically, the effects of lifestyle interventions on behavioral performance and …

Modified Low-Density Lipoprotein From Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Induces Foamy Macrophage Formation, Guannan Chen Dec 2015

Modified Low-Density Lipoprotein From Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Induces Foamy Macrophage Formation, Guannan Chen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the major causes of mortality in the world, causing approximately 1.5 million deaths every year, among which children take a great part. However, due to the perception that children are rarely infectious or they rarely develop severe disease, children with TB have always been neglected. What is worse, diagnosis of childhood TB is difficult, making it harder to control the disease. Foamy macrophages are a key component in the pathology of TB, and the formation of foamy macrophages foresees the progression of infection to active disease. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is one of the major lipoproteins …

Topical Treatment Of Actinic Keratosis And Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer With Phospho-Sulindac And Difluoromethylornithine, Yajing Sun Dec 2015

Topical Treatment Of Actinic Keratosis And Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer With Phospho-Sulindac And Difluoromethylornithine, Yajing Sun

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Actinic keratosis (AK), a cutaneous lesion resulting from the proliferation of atypical epidermal keratinocytes, has an incidence of 11%-26% and its prevalence is 58 million in the US alone. AK is a precursor to non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). NMSC, consisting of squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas, represents the most frequent human cancer. Current treatment for AK and NMSC is often limited by low efficacy, side effects, high cost, and undesirable cosmetic outcomes. Thus new agents for the treatment of AK are urgently needed. In an effort to develop an efficacious, safe and patient-acceptable approach to both AK and NMSC, …

This thesis studies the implications of firms' and households' decisions on macro and environmental aggregates in economies with market frictions using quantitative macroeconomic methods. The thesis consists three chapters. In each chapter, I study respectively the effects of product market frictions on firms' emission decisions, the effects of financial frictions on firms' hiring decisions, and those on households' consumption-saving choices. In Chapter 2, I study the effects of product market frictions on firm size distribution and its subsequent impact on aggregate output and industrial pollution in China. Using a unique micro-level manufacturing census, I find that larger firms generate and …

Writing At The Intersection: Understanding International Student Writers, Soni Adhikari Dec 2015

Writing At The Intersection: Understanding International Student Writers, Soni Adhikari

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In U.S. colleges and universities, non-native English speaking international students are generally described in terms of their challenges with the English language. Even after the focus of scholarship has recently shifted to these students’ strengths as “multilingual†writers, their challenges and strengths in other areas of their development as writers are still overlooked. This thesis addresses the need to inform and influence teaching/learning practices about international multilingual students by using multidimensional frameworks. Considering that international students’ challenges (and strengths) of language intersect with a variety of other academic skills and also their motivation to learn, I argue that in order …

In Defense Of Magic: Using Fantasy Literature In The Classroom, Marisa Florence Cignarella Dec 2015

In Defense Of Magic: Using Fantasy Literature In The Classroom, Marisa Florence Cignarella

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis argues for the greater inclusion of fantasy literature in high school and middle school English classrooms. Through an analysis of the popularity of fantasy series, including recent movies and their widespread pop cultural appeal, this thesis illustrates that fantasy resonates with many readers. A close examination of various works of fantasy literature appropriate to be read in full or excerpted in the classroom demonstrates that fantasy usefully illustrates various literary concepts, such as symbolism, metaphor, allusion, allegory, and character foils; provides clear examples of the hero's journey, which appear in various canonical texts as well as other media; …

Molly's Lips: Telephonic Interiority In The " Penelope" Episode Of Ulysses, Lennox Nicholas Debra Dec 2015

Molly's Lips: Telephonic Interiority In The " Penelope" Episode Of Ulysses, Lennox Nicholas Debra

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Molly Bloom's episode “Penelope†at the end of Ulysses is a pronounced narrative of her unique consciousness, yet it is the only first person narrative in the entire work that is interrupted by the gaze of the author. When the final episode of Ulysses begins, Molly’s narrative is one that seeks to give her a voice and narrative and there by constructs a gaze from which we as readers seek to in order to gain a better understanding of her character’s consciousness; yet, Molly’s acknowledgement of “Jamesy†alludes to a veiled characterization inherent to Molly Bloom. Why is she given …

Address To The Letter: Frankenstein, Pamela, And The Epistolary Novel, Peter Walsh Dec 2015

Address To The Letter: Frankenstein, Pamela, And The Epistolary Novel, Peter Walsh

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, is rarely classified as an epistolary novel. Many readers actually forget that the novel begins as a series of letters between an arctic explorer and his sister. The framing device of the letter used by Shelley cites the revered history of the epistolary novel in the previous century, most notably those of Samuel Richardson. Richardson used the epistolary form in his novels to create what Ian Watt refers to as “formal realism†. Richardson presents his novels as truth objects by employing the epistolary frame, but Shelley uses the form to reject the …

Heroes In Patrick Mchale's Over The Garden Wall, Justine Nicole Wilson Dec 2015

Heroes In Patrick Mchale's Over The Garden Wall, Justine Nicole Wilson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The presented Thesis asserts Patrick McHale’s Over the Garden Wall as a Modern Epic. It identifies the piece as Dantesque in its structure of a journey through an underworld, while noting that Dante is not the hero of his own epic. The argument is made that while Dante is too inactive in determining his fate to be given the title of epic Hero, McHale’s protagonists Wirt and Greg follow the structure of epic heroes, of the ancient tradition. The purpose of two protagonist on the same personal journey that is a spiritual odyssey, is maintained as a catalyst that allows …
