Agency And Empowerment In The Childbirth Process: The Effect Of Medicalization On Women's Decision Making, Alicia Jane Kauffman Jan 2015

Agency And Empowerment In The Childbirth Process: The Effect Of Medicalization On Women's Decision Making, Alicia Jane Kauffman

Sociology and Anthropology

Over the past decade, rates of caesarean section births and other interventions in childbirth have increased substantially. With increased medicalization of childbirth, it is often viewed as an illness requiring treatment rather than a natural process that women are equipped to handle with little intervention in most cases. A qualitative study was completed that included interviews with nine women participants who had previously given birth to at least one child. The findings elaborate on how women navigated the medical structures of childbirth in order to assert themselves as decision makers in the process, how they related to their bodies during …

Law Enforcement And Military Members: Engaging In The Community, Karen C. Kalmbach, Randy Garner Jan 2015

Law Enforcement And Military Members: Engaging In The Community, Karen C. Kalmbach, Randy Garner

Psychology Faculty Publications (Archived)

This chapter seeks to assist law enforcement by providing an empirical review of research on the relationship between military service and risk of dangerousness—to self (suicide) or others (violent crime). Risk posed by military members is poorly understood and largely overstated by media reports. The following discussion will reveal that—notwithstanding the unique aspects of military culture and service—most risk factors for violence (towards self and others) are similar for both military members and nonmilitary alike. However, some aspects of military service, (e.g., combat exposure), may impact the behavior and thought processes of service members who come into contact with law …

Midwest Medical Center Employee Perceptions Of Workplace Breastfeeding Experiences, Michelle Ann Brown Jan 2015

Midwest Medical Center Employee Perceptions Of Workplace Breastfeeding Experiences, Michelle Ann Brown

Nursing

The privilege of motherhood establishes additional temporary occupational needs for women who choose to breastfeed an infant and continue full time employment. The purpose of the study was to assess the holistic needs of employed lactating women. A Perceptions of Workplace Breastfeeding Experiences Questionnaire (PWBE-Q) was developed using Bronfenbrenner’s theory of social ecology and implemented with employees working in a Midwest medical center. The study included a physical survey of the facility’s lactation rooms. Three designated lactation rooms were assessed. Ninety five employees responded to the survey. Study results determined the facility’s existing designated lactation space was functional. Employees perceived …

Lived Experiences Of Stigma: Nurses Who Work In Abortion Clinics, Rosa Leigh Jacobs Jan 2015

Lived Experiences Of Stigma: Nurses Who Work In Abortion Clinics, Rosa Leigh Jacobs

Nursing

The profession of nursing is respected and trustworthy, but certain nursing specialty fields are looked at less favorably than others. Abortion nursing can be highly stigmatized because of society’s ethical, religious, and legislative arguments about abortion. This qualitative study with ten licensed nurses who work in abortion care in the United States sought to answer two research questions, “What are the lived experiences of nurses who work in abortion clinics?” and “How do nurses who work in abortion clinics experience stigma?” Three stigma themes and seven lived experience themes emerged from the research. The stigma themes pertain to participants’ experiences …

Interplay Of Porous Media And Fracture Stimulation In Sedimentary Enhanced Geothermal Systems : Red River Formation, Williston Basin, North Dakota, Caitlyn M. Hartig Jan 2015

Interplay Of Porous Media And Fracture Stimulation In Sedimentary Enhanced Geothermal Systems : Red River Formation, Williston Basin, North Dakota, Caitlyn M. Hartig

Theses and Dissertations

Fracture stimulated enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) can be installed in both crystalline rocks and sedimentary basins. The Red River Formation (Ordovician), which lies between 3.6 and 4.2 km depth in the Williston Basin, is a viable site for installation of sedimentary EGS (SEGS). SEGS is possible there because temperatures in the formation surpass 140° Celsius and the permeability is 0.1-38 mD; fracture stimulation can be utilized to improve performance. The main objectives of this project were 1) to determine the spatial variation of the intrinsic properties of the Red River Formation across the study area, and 2) to understand the …

Phenotypic Characterization Of Leptosphaeria Maculans Pathogenicity Groups Aggressiveness On Brassica Napus, Julianna Franceschi Fernández Jan 2015

Phenotypic Characterization Of Leptosphaeria Maculans Pathogenicity Groups Aggressiveness On Brassica Napus, Julianna Franceschi Fernández

Plant Pathology

One of the most destructive pathogens of canola (Brassica napus L.) is Leptosphaeria maculans (Desm.) Ces. & De Not., which causes blackleg disease. This fungus produces strains with different virulence profiles (pathogenicity groups, PG) which are defined using differential cultivars Westar, Quinta and Glacier. Besides this, little is known about other traits that characterize these groups. The objective of this study was to characterize the aggressiveness of L. maculans PG 2, 3, 4, and T. The components of aggressiveness evaluated were disease severity and ability to grow and sporulate in artificial medium. Disease severity was measured at different temperatures on …

Evaluation Of Genetic Resistance To Common Bacterial Blight In Dry Edible Bean, Maniruzzaman Jan 2015

Evaluation Of Genetic Resistance To Common Bacterial Blight In Dry Edible Bean, Maniruzzaman

Plant Pathology

Common bacterial blight (CBB) is an economically important disease of dry bean worldwide caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli, (Xap). The objectives of this research were to determine the frequency of CBB resistance in NDSU breeding materials and to evaluate the effectiveness of two SCAR markers, SAP6 and SU91, linked with major QTL for CBB resistance, across this host population. A total of 593 advanced and preliminary lines were phenotyped in the greenhouse and genotyped using SAP6 and SU91. Phenotyping revealed CBB resistance in 310 lines, with a higher frequency of resistant lines in the pinto, great northern and small …

Seed To Seedling Transmission Of Colletotrichum Lindemuthianum In Dry Edible Pinto Bean, Jessica Marie Halvorson Jan 2015

Seed To Seedling Transmission Of Colletotrichum Lindemuthianum In Dry Edible Pinto Bean, Jessica Marie Halvorson

Plant Pathology

Dry bean anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, is a damaging disease that can cause significant reductions in seed quality and yield. The purpose of this study was to determine the races of C. lindemuthianum isolates collected in North Dakota and to develop a real-time qPCR assay to quantify the pathogen in seed and stem tissue. Race 73 continues to be the most common in North Dakota across 33 isolates collected in 2012. The qPCR assay using primer pair ClF1527/ClR1609 was proven useful for quantifying C. lindemuthianum, and was more specific than a previously developed method. Results from greenhouse and field …

Spatial And Temporal Sensitivity Of Alternaria Species Associated With Potato Foliar Diseases To Demethylation Inhibiting And Anilino-Pyrimidine Fungicides, Arthur Dimitri Lakshan Fonseka Gunawardena Jan 2015

Spatial And Temporal Sensitivity Of Alternaria Species Associated With Potato Foliar Diseases To Demethylation Inhibiting And Anilino-Pyrimidine Fungicides, Arthur Dimitri Lakshan Fonseka Gunawardena

Plant Pathology

Early blight and brown spot, caused by Alternaria solani and Alternaria alternata, respectively, are important foliar diseases of potato, affecting both tuber yield and quality. Most of the commercial cultivars lack resistance; therefore, application of foliar fungicides remains a primary management strategy. Correlation coefficients comparing EC50 values for conidial germination and mycelial growth of A. solani and A. alternata in response to boscalid and fluopyram, respectively, were low, indicating that the association between these two in vitro assays was very weak. Baseline sensitivities of Alternaria spp. to difenoconazole, metconazole, and pyrimethanil using mycelial growth assays demonstrated high intrinsic activity against …

Characterization Of Effector Encoding Genes From The Novel Sugar Beet Pathogen Fusarium Secorum, Zhuyun Bian Jan 2015

Characterization Of Effector Encoding Genes From The Novel Sugar Beet Pathogen Fusarium Secorum, Zhuyun Bian

Plant Pathology

A new disease of sugar beet, named Fusarium yellowing decline, was recently found in in the Red River Valley of MN and ND. This disease is caused by a novel pathogen named Fusarium secorum. Pathogens such as F. secorum secrete proteins during infection called ‘effectors’ that help establish disease. Since pathogenicity and disease development may depend on effector proteins produced by F. secorum during infection, effector protein identification furthers our understanding of the biology of this important pathogen. A list of 11 candidate effectors was generated previously. In this study, to characterize putative effectors, we developed a transformation system using …

Identification And Genomic Mapping Of Resistance To Bacterial Leaf Streak In Wheat, Suraj Sapkota Jan 2015

Identification And Genomic Mapping Of Resistance To Bacterial Leaf Streak In Wheat, Suraj Sapkota

Plant Pathology

Bacterial leaf streak (BLS) of wheat, caused by Xanthomonas translucens pv. undulosa, is an important disease of wheat worldwide. Use of resistant cultivars is the most preferred way of managing BLS. The objective of this research was to identify highly resistant wheat germplasm and map BLS resistance genes. Two collections of wheat germplasm, including triticale and spring wheat, were evaluated for their reactions to BLS. A wide range of reactions from highly resistant to highly susceptible were observed for both collections. Five triticale accessions and twenty-four spring wheat genotypes with high level of resistance to BLS were identified. Genome wide …
