Guanidinium Based Anion Exchange Membranes For Solid Polymer Alkaline Fuel Cell Applications, Syed Dawar Sajjad

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Low temperature traditional PEM Fuel Cells and also other fuel cells in general suffer from the acute yet long standing issues of cost and performance. This has severely hindered the commercialization of fuel cells but Alkaline Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (AAEMFCs) pose as a breakthrough technology by offering improved conversion efficiency (a virtue of fast kinetics in the alkaline media) and the lower costs (from the prospect of using non-noble metal catalysts). However, before systematic testing of non-noble metal catalysis is tested on this system, it is imperative to develop a reliable anion exchange membrane which lies at the …

Detecting Real-Time Check-Worthy Factual Claims In Tweets Related To U.S. Politics, Fatma Dogan

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In increasing democracy and improving political discourse, political fact-checking has come to be a necessity. While politicians make claims about facts all the time, journalists and fact-checkers oftentimes reveal them as false, exaggerated, or misleading. Use of technology and social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter has rapidly increased the spread of misinformation. Thus, human fact-checkers face difficulty in keeping up with a massive amount of claims, and falsehoods frequently outpace truths. All U.S. politicians have successively adopted Twitter, and they make use of Twitter for a wide variety of purposes, a great example being making claims to enhance …

Quantitative Analysis Of Scalable Nosql Databases, Surya Narayanan Swaminathan

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

NoSQL databases are rapidly becoming the customary data platform for big data applications. These databases are emerging as a gateway for more alternative approaches outside traditional relational databases and are characterized by efficient horizontal scalability, schema-less approach to data modeling, high performance data access, and limited querying capabilities. The lack of transactional semantics among NoSQL databases has made the application determine the choice of a particular con- sistency model. Therefore, it is essential to examine methodically, and in detail, the performance of different databases under different workload conditions. In this work, three of the most commonly used NoSQL databases: MongoDB, …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Increasingly, society is being transferred to a dependence upon electronic technologies and networked systems, usually accessed via the internet. Physically, these systems reside within clusters of servers and storage banks which are collectively housed and maintained in data center facilities. In order for a data center to function properly, the environment must be tightly controlled to ensure maximum reliability of the electronic hardware components. Any method of controlling the environment has a cost, either in capital or in resources, and therefore becomes an issue for the sustainability of a building or complex. Currently data centers are one of the largest …

The Problem Of Reverse Payments In The Pharmaceutical Industry Following Actavis, Traci Aoki Dec 2015

The Problem Of Reverse Payments In The Pharmaceutical Industry Following Actavis, Traci Aoki

UC Law Journal

Reverse payments are payments that are made as a component of a patent infringement settlement, between a brand-name pharmaceutical company to a competitor who is attempting to market a generic version of the patented brand-name drug. The patentee not only drops its patent infringement suit against the generic manufacturer, but also compensates this alleged infringer. Reverse payment settlements raise antitrust concerns because they suggest that the generic manufacturer could have proved the brand-name’s patent either invalid or non-infringed, and thus entered the marketplace to provide consumers with lower priced generic drugs, if they had continued with the litigation. This also …

Woman, Wife, Mother-Saint, Scholar, Patriot: Lavon W. Laursen Papers, A Case Study Of Utah Women In Politics, Amber A. Laursen Dec 2015

Woman, Wife, Mother-Saint, Scholar, Patriot: Lavon W. Laursen Papers, A Case Study Of Utah Women In Politics, Amber A. Laursen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Compared to others of their era, Latter-day Saint women in Utah enjoyed a relative gender equality in voting and politics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Utah was one of the first states to have equal voting rights and it had the first female state senator in 1896. Religious doctrine once positively influenced gender equality in politics; but over a century since statehood, that same doctrine has led to the decline in Utah’s female representation due to its unchanging nature in a changing society.

This paper gives pertinent background information and explores the importance of Laursen’s political activity …

Exploring Unintended Pregnancy In The United States Military: A Phenomenological Approach, Mary Kathryn Phillips Dec 2015

Exploring Unintended Pregnancy In The United States Military: A Phenomenological Approach, Mary Kathryn Phillips

Dissertations

Nearly half of the 6.7 million pregnancies in the United States each year are unintended. The U.S. unintended pregnancy rate is significantly higher than the rate in many other developed countries. By age 45, more than half of all American women will have experienced an unintended pregnancy, and three in ten will have had an abortion. Previous empirical research aimed to fix the rate of unintended pregnancy before it was adequately explored. The rationale for this study emanated from the belief that interventions intended to reduce the rate of unintended pregnancy will be more successful if the essence of unintended …

Speculative Somatics, Ds Maranan

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Based on a presentation at The Undivided Mind conference at Plymouth University, this article sketches out speculative applications of somatics, the first person, phenomenological study of sensation, perception and movement. I first introduce the subject of somatics through an experiential exercise for the reader before summarizing theoretical aspects of somatic study. Drawing from the literature in embodied cognition and from personal recollections of embodied experiences, I propose how somatic approaches could potentially be used in working with immigrant communities, living in outer space, and empathizing with non-human animals.

“Right From Hades”: Water And Politics In Boise, Idaho, Molly Lorraine May Dec 2015

“Right From Hades”: Water And Politics In Boise, Idaho, Molly Lorraine May

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The western United States has, arguably, been shaped by water—both through its presence and its absence. This thesis examines the history of the artesian and geothermal water resources of Boise, Idaho. The development of these resources has taken a trajectory that is defined by busy periods of expansion punctuated by long stretches of inactivity or stasis. These stages of development closely align with major trends in environmental history. Beyond merely providing additional insight to the history of the region, the commoditization of nature in Boise provides further elucidation of national trends of conservation, environmentalism, and green energy. By examining the …

Effects Of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 And Parathyroid Hormone-Related Peptide On Collagen Xi During Skeletal Development, Neda Shefa Dec 2015

Effects Of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 And Parathyroid Hormone-Related Peptide On Collagen Xi During Skeletal Development, Neda Shefa

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Long bones develop via endochondral ossification, a process in which cartilage precedes bone. During endochondral ossification prechondrogenic cells undergo proliferation and apoptose as cells of the periosteum differentiate into bone. The process of endochondral ossification is regulated by a group of endocrine as well as paracrine molecules that includes bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP). Collagens are extracellular matrix molecules that are present in a spatiotemporal manner during endochondral ossification. Collagen XI alpha 1 (Col11a1) is a minor fibrillar collagen that is alternatively spliced during development and can result in up to eight different spliceforms. During endochondral …

Adaptive Scaling Of Cluster Boundaries For Large-Scale Social Media Data Clustering, Lei Meng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Donald C. Wunsch

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The large scale and complex nature of social media data raises the need to scale clustering techniques to big data and make them capable of automatically identifying data clusters with few empirical settings. In this paper, we present our investigation and three algorithms based on the fuzzy adaptive resonance theory (Fuzzy ART) that have linear computational complexity, use a single parameter, i.e., the vigilance parameter to identify data clusters, and are robust to modest parameter settings. The contribution of this paper lies in two aspects. First, we theoretically demonstrate how complement coding, commonly known as a normalization method, changes the …
