To understand the nature of supernovae and neutron star (NS) formation, as well as binary stellar evolution and their interactions, it is important to probe the distribution of NS masses. Until now, all double NS (DNS) systems have been measured as having a mass ratio close to unity (q ≥ 0.91). Here, we report the measurement of the individual masses of the 4.07-day binary pulsar J0453+1559 from measurements of the rate of advance of periastron and Shapiro delay: the mass of the pulsar is Mp = 1.559 0.005 Mo and that of its companion is Mo; q = 0.75. …

Fractal Patterns In Chaotic Scattering, William C. Trice Oct 2015

Fractal Patterns In Chaotic Scattering, William C. Trice

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Fractal patterns can be observed in chaotic scattering, as occurs when light scatters from arrays of cylindrical or spherical mirrors. We provide an introduction to these optical systems and the corresponding fractal patterns generated by their chaotic behavior. We also describe the theoretical and computational models used to simulate the behavior of these systems, and the design of experimental apparatus to check the models.

Examining Differences In Middle School Student Achievement On A State Mandated Examination: Does A Full Year Of Agriscience Really Make A Difference?, Sarah Hicks, Dennis W. Duncan, Myra Womble, Robert Branch

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Early agricultural education programs in the United States existed to promote new methods and techniques to further agricultural production. Today, extending integration, general knowledge, appreciation, and literacy about agriculture is the goal, especially at the middle school level. Not only is agricultural education designed to encompass academics, but science and technology, literacy, and career preparedness are parts of the total agricultural education program. Since the passage of No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), more pressure has been put on teachers to generate increased student academic performance and improvement of test scores. The purpose of this research study was to determine …

Further Exploration Of The Classroom Video Analysis (Cva) Instrument As A Measure Of Usable Knowledge For Teaching Mathematics: Taking A Knowledge System Perspective, Kathleen Jablon Stoehr Oct 2015

Further Exploration Of The Classroom Video Analysis (Cva) Instrument As A Measure Of Usable Knowledge For Teaching Mathematics: Taking A Knowledge System Perspective, Kathleen Jablon Stoehr

Teacher Education

In this article we report further explorations of the classroom video analysis instrument (CVA), a measure of usable teacher knowledge based on scoring teachers’ written analyses of classroom video clips. Like other researchers, our work thus far has attempted to identify and measure separable components of teacher knowledge. In this study we take a different approach, viewing teacher knowledge as a system in which different knowledge components are flexibly brought to bear on specific teaching situations. We explore this idea through a series of exploratory factor analyses of teachers clip level scores across three different CVA scales (fractions, ratio and …
