Essays In Political Economy And Voting., Mihir Bhattacharya Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis comprises three chapters on issues in political economy and voting. The first chapter considers a multilevel multidimensional aggregation problem in voting. The second chapter considers a model of party formation where citizens propose links to other candidates. The final chapter considers a model of electoral competition between regional and national parties. We provide a brief description of each chapter below. 1.1 Multilevel Multidimensional Consistent AggregatorsIn this chapter we study gerrymander-proof or consistent aggregation rules in different contexts. There are several papers that have studied the structure of consistent voting rules satisfying various versions of consistency. Virtually all these papers …

Sea-level rise can threaten the long-term sustainability of coastal communities and valuable ecosystems such as coral reefs, salt marshes and mangroves1,2. Mangrove forests have the capacity to keep pace with sea-level rise and to avoid inundation through vertical accretion of sediments, which allows them to maintain wetland soil elevations suitable for plant growth3. The Indo- Pacific region holds most of the world’s mangrove forests4, but sediment delivery in this region is declining, owing to anthropogenic activities such as damming of rivers5. This decline is of particular concern because the Indo-Pacific region is …

The Rna World: 4,000,000,050 Years Old, Niles Lehman

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The notion that molecular systems such as RNA can display a wide range of evolutionary processes in the absence of fully formed cellular life continues to gain support. Understanding how RNA can behave in an abiotic context is a key piece of our picture of how life developed and expanded on the Earth, and by proxy, elsewhere. We can study how RNA behaves in this regard through a combination of in vivo work (with small regulatory RNAs and larger catalytic RNAs alike), experimental work in the laboratory, and through powerful analytical and simulation studies. These efforts will not only grant …

Institutional And Organizational Capacities For Adapting To Climate Change In The Least Developing Countries, Sunil Tankha Oct 2015

Institutional And Organizational Capacities For Adapting To Climate Change In The Least Developing Countries, Sunil Tankha

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

In our research, we focus on three action arenas: village development, agriculture and forestry. The reason for this is that adaptation capacity is a function of both the intensity of the impacts caused by climate change and the resources to which a community has access and entitlement. Local development therefore is a key issue in increasing adaptive capacities, and in this area the relevant government organizations are the Village Development Committee (VDC), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation (MFSC). In each of these ministries and departments, we conducted several key …

Farmers’ Perception Of Climate Change And Willingness To Pay For Weather-Index Insurance In Bahunepati, Nepal, Wenmei Guo, Alok Bohara

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper is a pioneering study of investigating effects of farmers’ perception of climate change on their willingness to pay (WTP) for a weather-index crop insurance in Nepal. We use contingent valuation data collected from a primary household survey conducted in Bahunepati, Nepal to examine the topic. The research improves on the previous literature by analyzing two crop insurance products which incorporate both crop and livestock.

The Roberts Court And Securities Class Actions: Reaffirming Basic Principles, Eric Alan Isaacson

Akron Law Review

Part II of this Article presents an overview of Roberts Court decisions concerning class litigation...The Article’s primary focus, however, is on a trilogy of Roberts Court decisions concerning class certification in open-market securities fraud cases, where fraudulent statements allegedly manipulated the price of securities traded in the open market: Erica P. John Fund, Inc. v. Halliburton, Co. (“Halliburton I”), Amgen, Inc. v. Connecticut Retirement Plans and Trust Funds, and Halliburton Co. v. Erica P. John Fund, Inc. (“Halliburton II”)...Rather than jumping directly into a discussion of the three decisions, which have been extraordinarily good news for investors seeking to prosecute …

Compose: Compacted Object Sample Extraction A Framework For Semi-Supervised Learning In Nonstationary Environments, Karl Dyer Oct 2015

Compose: Compacted Object Sample Extraction A Framework For Semi-Supervised Learning In Nonstationary Environments, Karl Dyer

Theses and Dissertations

An increasing number of real-world applications are associated with streaming data drawn from drifting and nonstationary distributions. These applications demand new algorithms that can learn and adapt to such changes, also known as concept drift. Proper characterization of such data with existing approaches typically requires substantial amount of labeled instances, which may be difficult, expensive, or even impractical to obtain. In this thesis, compacted object sample extraction (COMPOSE) is introduced - a computational geometry-based framework to learn from nonstationary streaming data - where labels are unavailable (or presented very sporadically) after initialization. The feasibility and performance of the algorithm are …

Protecting Cultural Property In Non-International Armed Conflicts: Syria And Iraq, Louise Arimatsu, Mohbuba Choudhury Oct 2015

Protecting Cultural Property In Non-International Armed Conflicts: Syria And Iraq, Louise Arimatsu, Mohbuba Choudhury

International Law Studies

The deliberate destruction by ISIS of religious and cultural property in both Syria and Iraq sparked widespread international condemnation and was described by UNESCO’s Director-General as constituting war crimes. Regrettably, the damage to and destruction of such property has become an all too common feature of the conflicts that have engulfed both States. The authors examine the legal obligations that apply to the parties in non-international armed conflict and the consequences of non-compliance. In light of the scale of the human suffering engendered by the conflicts, the authors first ask why international law protects such property in armed conflict.

Observations Of New Particle Formation In Enhanced Uv Irradiance Zones Near Cumulus Clouds, B. Wehner, F. Werner, F. Ditas, R. A. Shaw, M. Kulmala, H. Siebert

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

During the CARRIBA (Cloud, Aerosol, Radiation and tuRbulence in the trade wInd regime over Barbados) campaign, the interaction between aerosol particles and cloud microphysical properties was investigated in detail, which also includes the influence of clouds on the aerosol formation. During two intensive campaigns in 2010 and 2011, helicopter-borne measurement flights were performed to investigate the thermodynamic, turbulent, microphysical, and radiative properties of trade-wind cumuli over Barbados. During these flights, 91 cases with increased aerosol particle number concentrations near clouds were detected. The majority of these cases are also correlated with enhanced irradiance in the ultraviolet (UV) spectral wavelength range. …

An Approach To Optimal Hyperspectral And Multispectral Signature And Image Fusion For Detecting Hidden Targets On Shorelines, Charles R. Bostater Oct 2015

An Approach To Optimal Hyperspectral And Multispectral Signature And Image Fusion For Detecting Hidden Targets On Shorelines, Charles R. Bostater

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Hyperspectral and multispectral imagery of shorelines collected from airborne and shipborne platforms are used following pushbroom imagery corrections using inertial motion motions units and augmented global positioning data and Kalman filtering. Corrected radiance or reflectance images are then used to optimize synthetic high spatial resolution spectral signatures resulting from an optimized data fusion process. The process demonstrated utilizes littoral zone features from imagery acquired in the Gulf of Mexico region. Shoreline imagery along the Banana River, Florida, is presented that utilizes a technique that makes use of numerically embedded targets in both higher spatial resolution multispectral images and lower spatial …

Resistance, The Church, And A Comparison Of Ceramics From Sixteenth-Century Caluco, El Salvador, Alison Denise Hodges Oct 2015

Resistance, The Church, And A Comparison Of Ceramics From Sixteenth-Century Caluco, El Salvador, Alison Denise Hodges

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines ceramics from the church of San Pedro y San Pablo, Caluco, El Salvador, to investigate the pressures of Spanish evangelization during the Colonial Period. It compares the church's ceramic assemblage to two privately-owned houses, also within Caluco. Examining choices in ceramic styles for serving food and drink is one way to examine the colonial policies of reducción, which were to instill a regular, commonplace Christian order in everyday life. The materials in question were a large number of Spanish majolicas, as well as 300 locally-made vessels, and form, decoration, and ware was noted for each. The relative …

Mixed Weibull Distribution Model Of Dc Dielectric Breakdowns With Dual Defect Modes, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison Oct 2015

Mixed Weibull Distribution Model Of Dc Dielectric Breakdowns With Dual Defect Modes, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Journal Articles

This work provides physical insight into common statistical models for DC dielectric breakdown field strengths. Voltage step-up tests were performed on low density polyethylene films. The merits of generalizations to widely-used empirical Weibull models are discussed. The cumulative probability distributions of the breakdown fields were fit to standard two- and three-parameter Weibull distributions. Mixed two-parameter Weibull distributions, sometimes used in the literature to model multiple breakdown modes, were found to yield the best fits to the data. In addition, the same data were fit to a physically-motivated dual-defect mean field model incorporating both low- and high-energy defect modes with different …

Few-Boson Processes In The Presence Of An Attractive Impurity Under One-Dimensional Confinement, Nirav P. Mehta, Connor D. Morehead Oct 2015

Few-Boson Processes In The Presence Of An Attractive Impurity Under One-Dimensional Confinement, Nirav P. Mehta, Connor D. Morehead

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

We consider a few-boson system confined to one dimension with a single distinguishable particle of lesser mass. All particle interactions are modeled with δ functions, but due to the mass imbalance the problem is nonintegrable. Universal few-body binding energies, atom-dimer and atom-trimer scattering lengths, are all calculated in terms of two parameters, namely the mass ratio mL/mH, and ratio gHH/gHL of the δ-function couplings. We specifically identify the values of these ratios for which the atom-dimer or atom-trimer scattering lengths vanish or diverge. We identify regions in this parameter space …

Stochastic Acceleration Of Galactic Cosmic Rays By Compressible Plasma Fluctuations In Supernova Shells, Ming Zhang Oct 2015

Stochastic Acceleration Of Galactic Cosmic Rays By Compressible Plasma Fluctuations In Supernova Shells, Ming Zhang

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A theory of 2-stage acceleration of Galactic cosmic rays in supernova remnants is proposed. The first stage is accomplished by the supernova shock front, where a power-law spectrum is established up to a certain cutoff energy. It is followed by stochastic acceleration with compressible waves/turbulence in the downstream medium. With a broad ∝k^(-2) spectrum for the compressible plasma fluctuations, the rate of stochastic acceleration is constant over a wide range of particle momentum. In this case, the stochastic acceleration process extends the power-law spectrum cutoff energy of Galactic cosmic rays to the knee without changing the spectral slope. This situation …
